Saurus Rock: Member Hall of Fame / 2020 Tiebreaker
« on: October 18, 2020, 03:32:22 AM »
Well I guess even 2020 deserves 1 tiebreaker! The appreciated member awards cut things quite close, and we need a tiebreaker vote for the runner-up.

So for Appreciated Member 2020 (Runner-up), please vote for either Jassy or Sovereign, who both received 3 votes in the main award voting.

Voting is open to everyone who voted, except for the members involved in this tiebreak. If there is a tie at the end of the voting, the admins will have to decide who wins the runner-up.

Running tally:
Jassy - 5
Sovereign - 2

Voting will run for ~1 week and will end on Saturday 24 October, midnight forum time.

Edit: it will close on Sunday, 25 October midnight forum time after a 1 day extension.

Announcements / Emote reorganization
« on: October 12, 2020, 02:47:30 AM »
As mentioned in several topics, we have a bunch of emotes all over the place. We should decide on a few things:

  • Which emotes to move to a separate pop-up [more] underneath the other emotes
  • How to organize the emotes

This poll is created to decide on how to organize the emotes. We will need to discuss which emotes to move to the separate pop-up as well. Feel free to do so here.

Announcements / Updated forum theme
« on: October 06, 2020, 05:05:39 AM »
Good morning  :rainbowwave

We admins had been looking for a new theme for a while, especially to accommodate mobile devices (because lets be honest, in our old default theme it was a true challenge to read anything on mobile). We settled on a theme called "Sunrise", and have made it default for all visitors and new members. Zero has tweaked it a while ago to resemble our old theme and I have been using it for a good couple of months now, and some others were using it already as well.

However it seems I triggered something when applying the theme for all visitors/new members, and some of you have now got the new forum theme as well. Now I know as well as anyone that change is not always welcome, so if you do not wish to use the new theme yet, you can change it here (the previous theme is called HaleOn):
https://www.gangoffive.net/index.php?action=profile;area=theme

Now the new theme is not 100% finished yet. We have some cool ideas in store for it, but are currently waiting on several things before we can apply those ideas. I just wanted to get this post out there in case you do not wish to use the new theme and were accidentally upgraded ;)

LBT Fanart / Drawing fanart from memory
« on: September 30, 2020, 07:13:30 AM »
We were just discussing this in the Discord server: our LBT friends are particularly challenging to draw without any reference. They have so many small details & odd expressions that are really hard to draw from memory. My compliments to anyone who can properly draw them without references!

So here goes. Be prepared for a load of probably really bad fanart. Anyone else care to join in and share their beautiful works of art?  :SharptoothAmused

This one was definitely drawn from memory, all the way back in 2008. I'll try to draw something else from memory soon to see how my skills hold up  :lol

Silver Screen / Netflix's The Social Dilemma
« on: September 15, 2020, 09:01:32 AM »
Netflix recently released the documentary The Social Dilemma which goes into the impact of social media, not just on our lives, but on politics and mental health as well. It mostly features people who have previously worked in the industry and are now opening up about what is happening behind the scenes and why it is such a problem.

Has anyone else seen it (or intends to see it)?

I wasn't sure if I should put this in Silver Screen or in After Midnight, as it could potentially turn into a discussion about internet privacy etc. Discussing big data should really be done in another topic, but for now here are some things you can use to make your internet browsing a little more private:
- Use an ad blocker. I personally recommend uBlock Origin.
- Another useful add-on is Privacy Badger, which will block unwanted trackers and cookies.
- Firefox recently released a "Facebook Container" add-on: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/facebook-container-prevent-facebook-tracking

In general I recommend using Firefox over Google Chrome because... it's Google ;)

And while I do use Google as my default search engine, as it seems better optimized than alternatives, I do want to share some alternatives:
https://www.ecosia.org/?c=en < every search you make contributes to planting trees around the globe. Has been around for a long time and is trustworthy. Uses Bing's search engine.
https://duckduckgo.com/ < search engine that focuses on privacy.

Do you have any tips you'd like to share?

Visual Art / Mumbling's Photography
« on: August 18, 2020, 01:10:44 PM »
So I was pretty surprised recently when I was discussing photography with Flathead770, because I discovered I never created a photography topic on the forum. Quite odd considering taking photos has always been one of my major interests. While I am not very much into the technical aspect of it (I really don't know how to handle a DSLR) I have always enjoyed finding the right angle to create the "perfect" shot. I've got pictures from the last 2 decades ready to share with you, but I'll try not to bore you too much with old stuff or pictures of my cat ;)

To kick things off, I wanted to start with a new picture. I was walking around my neighborhood recently and stumbled upon a nice lake. Can totally see myself going back there to chill on that bench when temperatures are more moderate again.

On that same walk I discovered some stone steps. Something about the lighting, nature and the steps compelled me to take this photo.

Aaaand fine, one picture of my cat (that most of you have seen on Discord already). He was climbing a small tree/bush in my garden and I took out my camera to film him. Right as I got nearby he popped out of the twigs and looked straight at the camera. Love this shot.

Forum Projects / New award banners
« on: July 28, 2020, 12:39:53 PM »
Hello everyone  :rainbowwave

The annual award session is once again approaching, but we have run into somewhat of a snag. We currently have around 43 unused banners, which may seem like a lot... But if we want to offer 3 or 4 banners per category for winners to choose from, and have a banner for Member of 20xx, fanfiction banners, and have multiple Patreon banners, etc. Well... we will very quickly run out. The past few years we have scraped together a few images every time to keep up the supply, but this is a time consuming process and well, not something we have time for at the moment!  :ChomperRWAAR

So as a one off, we would like to ask all of you to contribute. We are looking for screenshots featuring at least one character and somewhat of a background. We can "duplicate" the background if necessary, so most important is the character. Furthermore we like to have a screenshot that is somewhat relevant to its category. As a reminder, these are the categories that we have:

Proactive Member
Role Play
Fanart
Friendly Member
Feedback
Appreciated Member

Plus the more "generic" ones:
Fanfiction awards banners
Patreon banners
Member of 20xx banners

We asked some of you to help out last year and you were a great help, but it would be even better if we would be set for years to come! What would we need from you? Cool screenshots! You can attach them to your posts, put them in a zip, make a gallery on imgur, whatever works best for you. You don't need to crop the screenshots down to banner size, we will do that on our end. I have attached the banners that we currently have "in stock" so you can see what kind of vibe we are looking for for each category, including a few that don't have a category assigned yet.

And of course, since we will probably have plenty of banners to go around, this one-off request will be awarded with a banner as well. We've decided we'll grant a banner based on participation. If you send in 5 screenshots we can use, you'll receive a bronze banner, 10 for a silver one, 15 for a gold one.

Any questions for now? Shoot!  :CeraHAPPY

Forum Projects / Forum Newsletter - June 2020
« on: June 01, 2020, 03:11:13 AM »
Hello everyone  :rainbowwave

By now you should have received the latest edition of our Newsletter! After a bit of a flawed start last month, we think we've got it all figured out for future editions. Still, for those of you who still did not receive it (make sure your email address is up to date), and for newer members who want to read up on old editions, we've decided to add the newsletter in a separate post on the forum as well.

My thanks go out to @Anagnos , @OwlsCantRead and @StardustSoldier who basically compiled the entire newsletter this month. You guys have been a great help  :wub

So without further ado, please find the June 2020 Newsletter attached to this post.

30
In honor of Pterano month (in June), there will be a live stream of the 7th Land Before Time movie on Discord. This will likely take place on June 21st, 9 AM ET, 3 PM CEST.

Subject to change since I am not sure what my internet situation will be in the new place, but I'll make sure to announce it on time if the plan changes :)

Can anyone confirm that they can see this event on the forum's calendar?

Edit: Thanks Flathead! :D

The topic Gamers Unite hasn't been updated in 5 years now and I'd like to have a fresh start anyway! So in this new topic you can share your console and PC gamer tags to play online with other members. Disclaimer that this is a public part of the forum, so if you don't want strangers to see it, best not to share them here :)

I'll kick things off:

Gamers Zone / Temtem

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Csx5aK5mZCI

So I've been following the development of a game called Temtem. It is very similar to Pokémon, with creature collecting and battling. However the big difference is that it can be played online with other players. It is coming out later today and I hope to get a chance to play it after work. I'm not a big fan of MMO's, but everything else about the game looks very promising! :)

Anyone else eager to play this game? I know it was mentioned on Discord, so I thought it would make sense to put a topic up on the forum :yes

The Fridge / New Years Celebrations across the world
« on: December 31, 2019, 06:14:02 AM »
 :rainbowwave
Hi everyone!

It is almost 2020 for some of you, while others will soon wake up on December 31st, 2019. According to the fireworks going off here for the past 3 days, I live sometime in the future  :lol

Anyway, I wanted to share with you an article that I read the other day in the Correspondent:
https://thecorrespondent.com/201/view-of-a-years-end-celebrating-across-cultures/16280696289-63028c64

I'm posting the article in spoiler tags here, just in case it is no longer accessible:
Spoiler: ShowHide

In View of Scotland/Love Poem, Liz Lochhead, a former Scots Makar, describes the cleaning of a house from top to bottom on New Year’s Eve:

Down on her hands and knees

at ten at night on Hogmanay,

my mother still giving it elbowgrease

jiffywaxing the vinolay.

However, as friends from Scotland reliably inform me, they will not quite be pandering to this ritual of "redding" on this coming new year.

Whether across nations or households, shared practices – rituals – help define who we are. So, wanting to learn more about The Correspondent’s members, spread out across 130 countries, we asked them to share their end-of-year traditions.

Inspired by an anecdote about the Japanese "jumping" into the new year, Tracy shared this: “Every New Year’s Eve, at midnight, we climb up on chairs, sofas or whatever is convenient and at the stroke of midnight jump into the New Year. I have since found out that it is not really a Japanese tradition – but it has become our tradition."

While jumping into the new year is not an official end-of-year tradition, Haruka from Japan does remember doing it as a child, taking delight in being in the air: "I’m not on earth at the moment when the new year strikes."

Members shared traditions from cultures they’d grown up with, and others they’d adopted along the way, but few have had the breadth of festive experiences that Shakeel
has, having experienced Hanukah, Christmas, Ramadan, Eid-al-Fitr and Eid-al-Adha.

Born and raised in Karachi, Pakistan, he explained that his family didn’t have a year-end tradition. He added: "Moving to the United States in my early 20s and marrying a Jewish girl has given me a wide range of perspectives at the end of every year."

"We enjoyed decorating Christmas trees, making/decorating cookies, opening gifts on Christmas days, lighting the menorah, fasting and feasting during Ramadan, and large gathering for Eid celebrations. This year, we will be saying goodbye to 2019 with a visit to the northern part of Pakistan … I hope to form a new tradition starting with this trip."

In the heat of December in Australia buckets of water are left out for reindeer, said Sally from Darwin. She added that tropical festive lunch includes salad, crabs and prawn, and beer: "We swim and sleep in the afternoon and wait for the rains." This year, Robert explained how hard the festive period will be, with bush fires raging across the country more furiously than ever before.

This time of year also encourages acts of kindness and generosity. Esther, from the Netherlands, spends every 26 December in London where she volunteers with a homelessness charity. "Many of these people have been faced with dark moments," she said. "Think violence, abuse, job loss, divorce, bereavement – and just tried to keep their balance on that tiny ledge between society and the abyss. I am grateful that I never slipped off that ledge in my dark days. I am the lucky one. And they are my teachers."
Food, glorious food!

Food is a common theme across all new year celebrations described to us. “On New Year’s Day it is a custom to visit your neighbours and have a stiff drink and a wafer. Imagine us walking back home after having visited six neighbours … ” wrote Netty.

She explained that the choice of foods at this time of year were indicative of the Dutch colonial legacy. "Food is an expression of our roots,” she said, listing the wafers, jaarskoeken, oliebollen, and Indonesian cake (roti kudus) traditionally eaten.

In Russia, the dinner table is typically so full that "your wine glass or a shot for vodka barely fits in between dishes," contributed Arseniy. "Cold cuts, mayonnaise salads, meat jelly, everything has to be in abundance. Then, of course, ice cold vodka shots to improve digestion.”

There is great symbolism in sharing food. Take the folding of a Dutch cookie, or the passing of a Polish wafer. The thin, round kniepertie cookie "means: the year has unfolded – no secrets for us anymore," said GP Hofstra, who shared a brilliant example of this with the kniepertie. GP added: "The same cookie is also served at the very beginning of the year, only then it is rolled up. At the beginning of the year we call the cookie ‘rolletje’ because the new year is still a secret and we do not know what is coming, what will happen exactly."

Christin shared that the Spaniards eat 12 grapes to celebrate the 12 months ahead to each gong of the clock chiming into the new year, which is "not an easy endeavour!"

In Poland, Wigilia, the Christmas Eve supper celebrated on 24 December, family members break off a piece of a wafer as they shared their hardships and hopes.

"Now, as an adult, and after losing not only my grandmother and grandfather, but two aunts and one cousin, Wigilia is more dear to me than ever,” Carly wrote. “It’s a chance for us all to be close, to share our experiences, and have comfort in the face of incredible sadness."

Food has remained a central part of year end traditions even as those traditions have been altered. For Anne’s family, the transition was going meat free: "We will cook a vegan Surinam-Caribbean feast with roti after previously having a mixed plant and animal based dinner. We can focus again on togetherness, joy, gratitude, movies, music and a bit of decadence."
A time to ... get things off your chest

What was clear over and over from the practices that were shared was that traditions are formed to celebrate certain values held dear, such as openness. For Christine, that openness takes the form of a top 10 list of the most significant moments in their lives over the past year, shared among friends and people she doesn’t even know! “This can be a TV show that meant a lot, or the illness of a loved one that cast a long shadow,” wrote Christine. “It’s interesting to look back on our own lists for previous years, but also to reflect on each other’s milestones.”

Laura and her wider family have created a tradition known as "Amnesty Night", held at an Italian restaurant they frequent in Boston, US: “On Amnesty Night you can confess stuff you did during the year that you didn’t want your parents to find out about. And if you confess it, it’s over. It’s a blessing to have those lines of communication open."
Leaving the past behind and shoring up the future

Red underwear is worn in southern Italy, and yellow in Ecuador people for luck, says Irene. In Venezuela, as in Italy, the tradition is to wear new clothes. In a curious Neapolitan tradition "people also throw a lot of the old stuff they don’t need out of their windows: calendars, glasses, but also rubbish".

Noise forms a part of many new year’s celebrations. For example, locals head to the city centre to see a loud, and very long, chain of firecrackers set off in Paramaribo, Surinam, which are said to warn off evil spirits. Others celebrate with a sense of ingenuity despite a lack of resources. "Many years ago, near Timbuktu, our Malian friends … got pins out and we burst balloons, to mimic firecrackers," says Lucia. "We danced until the battery powered tape recorder ran out of juice."

In Belarus, Russia and Germany, television is part of the celebration. " Irony of Fate is one of the most archetypical USSR movies," adds Arseniy. "A must-see for anybody staying indoors is the 1963 British "Dinner for One" sketch, which the Brits have forgotten about, but which remains a huge annual TV hit," adds Christine in Germany.

"The chimes of the Kremlin towers broadcast live from Moscow is the moment to write your wishes on a piece of paper, burn it, and drink your champagne together with ash – all before the chimes end – then your wish will most definitely come true," explains Arseniy.

Katz mentions a more modern Dutch tradition, of " jumping in a cold body of water on 1 January".
In Edinburgh, Scotland, this tradition is called the " Loony Dook".
In Sudan, where the first of January also marks independence day, Lina explains that strangers splash water on others. It could be to wash away the past year. That same idea of cleaning the past is celebrated at the Thai water festival, which marks the beginning of the Buddhist new year (in mid-April).

One thing is sure in the Romanian tradition, avoid chicken and favour fish

And so Liz Lochhead has it too in her wonderful poem:

On the kitchen table

a newly opened tin of sockeye salmon.

Though we do not expect anyone,

the slab of black bun,

petticoat-tails fanned out

on bone china.

I found it extremely interesting to read about New Years celebrations all across the world. Some are cultural, others are very personal that are just celebrated in their families. You don't need to read the article, but I was wondering if you'd like to share how you usually celebrate New Years.

The celebrations in the Netherlands are often paired with a lot of noisy and colorful fireworks, that can be bought by individuals over 18. Technically the fireworks are only allowed between 6 PM on 31 December and 2 AM on 1 January, but as I mentioned earlier this rule doesn't get respected. I'm personally in favor of proper fireworks shows instead of consumers doing whatever they like, but that is a debate for another time.

Another Dutch thing is the consumption of oliebollen, which I am not a big fan of, and krumkakes with whipped cream filling that are also mentioned in the article. Champagne is also often consumed when the clock hits midnight.

For me personally, I tend to listen to the national radio, which plays the so-called Top 2000 playlist from Christmas right until the clock hits midnight and starts the new year. I enjoy listening to the classics and this is a great place to find them. If you want to listen along, you can find the radio station here. I enjoy a nice meal with my family, followed by board games and other shenanigans. I don't fire fireworks myself as I consider them a waste of money and bad for the environment, but I do enjoy watching the fireworks for a bit right after midnight.

I am looking forward to visiting my mother later today and starting the new year together with some of my family. What are you doing for new years and what is traditionally celebrated in your countries?

Making several topics for the voice-over project to create better visibility and hopefully blow some new life into it. In this topic: Character Auditions.

While some character slots have been filled, most characters still need to find their match. Please note that you do not need to sound exactly like the original voice actor, because then we might as well watch the original movie. An Australian Littlefoot? Sure! A Russian Ducky? Why not?!

These are the recordings I have received until now, for all characters. Want to join in? Check out which characters have not yet been taken.

Fan Voice Overs / [VO] How to record yourself for the voice-over project
« on: October 23, 2019, 03:12:32 AM »
 :rainbowwave

Making several topics for the voice-over project to create better visibility and hopefully blow some new life into it. In this topic: How to record yourself for the voice-over project

First of all, you'll need to know WHAT to say. For that we have created a script of lines that are said in the first movie:

Script:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1n9Lb5eAjHI7sSLEoIWH3ck69h4fDFeP_WMIwS1WZ6BA/edit

Feel free to practice it a bit off-mic. Play the movie, talk with your character and feel their intonation and speed. Then when you feel ready to record, grab a recording program and a microphone, and get going.

Instructions:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_VI9SwTwqw

1. Get your microphone and plug it into your computer. Most laptops have build-in mics, but an external mic is almost always better quality.
2. Get Goldwave, a free recording program. Another alternative is Audacity, but I do not have a video of that. Works similarly though.
3. Do a test recording to make sure that your microphone works. One, two, three, hello?
4. Plug in a headset or some ear phones, so that we do not hear the movie in the background as an echo.
5. Talk along with the movie, show the script on your screen or print it if necessary.
6. Save the file as yourname - scene - character.wav. You can also record the entire character for the movie in one go if you're feeling ambitious.
7. Send the files to me by email or WeTransfer to thelionqueen@live.nl
8. Have fun  :D

If you have any questions about this process, please feel free to message me or ask them here.

Voting for the 2019 Gang of Five Forum Awards has officially begun!  In this topic you may post your votes for those individuals which you feel is most deserving of the awards mentioned in the rules topic.

Just as a reminder, in order to be qualified for any award you will need to vote for at least 4 of the 5 award categories.  If you skip 2 of the main 5 categories then you must vote in the Appreciated Member award in order to win an award yourself.

With all of that in mind, please keep in mind that the annual forum awards are meant to be a fun event, and a chance to recognize those on the forum who have contributed to making it the welcoming and interesting place that it is.  There are so many deserving candidates, and I will take at least a few hours to consider my choices, but feel free to begin voting in this topic whenever you are ready to do so.

A running voting tally will be maintained on this initial post.  Please keep in mind, however, that there will be some delay in when we can get around to updating the totals. We will try to update it daily.
