Title: DVD Release
Post by: Tikaani Strike on September 14, 2007, 06:24:34 PM
When was the last time this sucker was released on DVD...2003-ish? I sadly never got the chance to get any animated films from the '80s because of poor DVD release and my procrastination habit. among the films that have not been relesed was Balto, who many on Balto Source have been gunning for a Special edition DVD or even a re-release, since the last time Balto came out was in 2003.

And now, prepare yourselves for this.
On Balto Source, our admin, Steet, posted something for those in the US (and Australia, AKA my old neck o' the woods.)

Universal is going to release a dvd pack with these three films :

-Balto
-An American Tail
-The Land Before Time

(http://images2.dvdempire.com/gen/movies/1363143h.jpg)

Now, for Balto fans, this is a HUGE step in the right direction, we have been fighting and singing a petition for near a year as well as letters, repeated e-mails, and just plain support.
Now, the 3-pack is being release November 6th, 2007...so very very soon. It will be $20.00 for all three movies, which is a good buy. for those who don't know Balto, I highly recommend it!
More people will get to know these animated films from the '80s and '90s...sadly, some people on Balto Source did not know what An American Tail is. Hopefully, this is a step to where you want to be too, getting people to know the original as well as the sequels, since the original is rather hard to find (i've been tracking for quite some time! <_< ) I see that some of you are gunning for a Land Before Time Special edition DVd...and while this may not be it...it IS a step in the right direction, getting more people to watch it and want to learn more about it. Hopefully, this DVD 3-pack will help you as well as us Balto fans!

The Cera image comes right from the original movie's cover. Cera's frill is in a wrong angle on that one.

Most cartoon DVD covers don't match with the movie.
So it's not very surprising for me.  :D

But then again, I want that DVD.  B)

Balto is the wolf character on the middle banner.  I saw part of it while my cousin was watching it, but I don't remember anything about it except for something that some weirdo bird said.  Something about..."People Bumps"? :huh: Maybe I'm mistaken.

^ Boris was a snow goose I think and instead of goosebumps, he got people bumps. :lol:

I guess we need to find out more about this release.  I've yet not bought American Tail or Balto on DVD so it might prove worthwhile if the LBT film is better than the 1999 release I have.

Who's Balto?
The real Balto was a part of the legendary 1925 Serum Run og Nome, where over 150  dogs and 20 musher relaying it from Nenana to Nome, Alaska.  Serveral dogs used in the dled run include Fritz, Fox, Balto, Blackie, and proably the most remembered besides Balto, Togo. The temas ran over 674, in just 5 1/2 days (most of it in the dark)

~~~~
This movie, released in 1995, was based VERY loosly on the Serum Run. In the movie, Blato is a outcas half-dog, half-wolf who just wants to run. Bullied by the top sled dog, Steele and his team, Balto has very few friends including Boris the snow goose; Muk and Luk, two polor bears who cannot swim; and Jenna, the beuatiful husky.
When the diptheria strikes Nome in the winter of 1925, Balto is left out of the Serum Run Team and watches as the dogs race out of a town to get the medicine Nome so desperatly needs.
On the way back with the medicine, Steele leads his team past the second checkpoint, getting themselves seriously and totally lost. Balto goes after them with his gang of misfit creatures to bring the team home and save Nome from what could be the most terrifying enemy of all.
~~~~~~

Haha, I sound like a commerical. This is what I get for having a sister obsessed with Balto.
Petrie, what do you want to know? I can ask Balto Source's admin, who might have a clue.

Here is a little tidbit of Balto...everyone's favorite part, the White Wolf scene.

Balto: White Wolf Scene (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0msSxAYDP4)

Enjoy!
Threehorn--> 20.00 is VERY good for all three of these classics, considering they'd proably cost 20.00 each seperatly. Go for it!

Actually, the original LBT movie runs at $7.50 at my local Wal-Mart, and I'm sure An American Tail runs at a similar price.

If LBT is from the same crummy source the other releases have been from then what's the point?  I think Tail got a double disc or recent release not too long ago.

Holy crap! :o The only reason I haven't gotten another copy of the original LBT dvd is because it's labeled as a "classic" and it is $25 at my walmart and $20 at costco. :blink:

Hmm, DVDs in my walmart (one-disc ones) are typically anywhere between $9-16, though some are around $20. But I never seen anything over $23 unless it came with more than one disc.

That's just not right. You can probably get it on online (and probably at walmart.com too) for less than $20. Prices around your neck of the US of A are probably different than mine, though.

The DvD of the original land before time movie which I have came for free along with the Australian version of LBT 11. While I don't want to complain about obtaining the DvD that way it is kind of sad to see this movie being offered as a free bonus :(

They wouldn't surely make a new movie a "throw-away" gift, would they? I really don't get the beef with giving away copies of The Land Before Time (and that isn't really what they're doing now, as in this three-pack, it would still account for a third of the price).

It's really a shame on how the old classics are overlook by the cheaply made sequels. The Land Before Time was once a huge hit...and now it's restored to this, being packed away in a cheap DVD set with horrible quality and cover art. But hey, at least theyre releasing it.

If you ask me, Disney does a better job when they re-release a classic movie.  They not only upgrade the quality, but they also give a VERY nice amount of bonus features that are quite enjoyable. :)

Universal really needs to get their act together if they hope to beat their toughest competition. :)

You just don't know how much it's true...Universal is just very lazy and only does the minimum. They don't want to take ANY risk, hence the low budget for the sequels and all their animated productions, including the DVDs.
They only care about the franchises that earn money (= Land before time), and even in that case they don't make any real effort.

In fact, this DVD pack is the ONLY thing they did for the Balto franchise since 2004...It's a good step, but still just a repackaging of the current DVDs.
They made two sequels for Balto, but did not make any effort to promote them (no merchandise, no soundtrack, no advertisement, no video game, absolutely nothing...)
They didn't make any merchandise for Balto since the release of the film in theaters, 12 years ago.

I could go on longer like this, but it would be easier to read this article I had written :

http://baltosource.timduru.org/en/b1articl..._Balto/749.html (http://baltosource.timduru.org/en/b1articles/The_truth_about_Universal_and_Balto/749.html)

I can tell you that you're lucky they're making sequels and a TV series for Land before time, or everyone would have forgotten about it for years...

^ And even the memory would only go so far.  I'm no fan of the sequel machine, but I will support a good animated film when I see one (LBT is one, and Balto is another, even if it did take liberty with the real legend).

Well, don't ask me for the files.  I don't wish to engage in illegal activity.  If you want to obtain them illegally, fine.  Go download a torrent, but don't ask me for the links.  You're on your own. B)  Sorry, but I can't be of any more assistance.  The only legal way I could see doing this is if you got a friend to buy you a copy from the US and then you decrypted it so it's "De-regionized"(meaning it can play in any dvd player).  Not too hard, but I'm not sure if it's legal where you're from.  I know it's legal here, but I have no idea about other countries.  You should go check that out. ;)

DvD players which play DvDs from every region are sold legally over here and they aren't too expensive. Ebay may be very helpful if you are looking for the DvDs which are not frequently offered in the stores over here.

If you want to take another risk (because it doesn't work for all computers and dvd drives), if you can find the zipped version of the VideoLan (VLC) player, it doesn't tell the OS what region the dvd is and should play it fine (but you need to tell Windows to do nothing with the dvd and then open it in VLC manually).  I've had no trouble doing it this way and it won't region lock your dvd drive.
