Title: Ask Stardust anything
Post by: StardustSoldier on April 23, 2019, 07:49:25 AM
Decided I'd start up one of these as well.  :Mo

Feel free to ask me anything you like. I don't mind if it's a personal question.

Which came first - the chicken or the egg?  :p

Is that what constitutes your idea of a personal question? Either way, I'm flattered that I got a different question from everyone else.  :p

In my mind, for some reason, it makes more sense for the chicken to have come first. But I really don't know either way.

The bio store near my work agrees. "The chicken comes first, THEN the egg!" :PCera

What do you do for a living?

I am not officially employed at the moment. Earlier in the year I did have a lot of freelance jobs though, which was nice. Lately I've been having a lull with that, but hopefully it picks up again soon.

Gaming is more of a casual hobby for me than some of my other interests. I'm by no means a hardcore gamer, nor am I into the competitive scene. And most of the games that I do play tend to be fairly straightforward. I play a lot of Angry Birds, for example.

That said, I've been a Super Mario fan since I was a kid. Right now I'm doing another playthrough of Super Mario 64. Still a lot of fun after all these years. I also really want to play Super Mario Odyssey, although I haven't gotten around to it yet.

I also played Baldi's Basics in Education and Learning for the first time recently. Interesting game...

Title: Re: Ask Stardust Soldier (aka. Ian)

I love writing and working on my stories. I also enjoy hot baths, eating good food, listening to good music, cuddling with my cat, going out for walks (and especially exploring new areas), paying video games, reading, watching movies. I am also trying to get myself to draw more. Currently I'm not very good at it, but I want to get better.

What would be your first question after waking up from being cryogenically frozen for 100 years?

My first question would be, how the heck did I get cryogenically frozen in the first place?!

Sometimes it depends on what I'm in the mood for, but overall it's probably cheese pizza. I also really like cheeseburgers, chicken wings, and almost anything to do with vanilla.

If you had unlimited funds to build a house that you would live in for the rest of your life, what would the finished house be like?
Title: Re: Ask Stardust Soldier (aka. Ian)
Post by: StardustSoldier on April 28, 2019, 08:21:33 AM
Ooh, that's a great question.

I'd build a huge mansion. Even if it were more spacious than would ever be practical, I've always enjoyed large houses for some reason. I'd style it after my local university, which I've always loved the design of, except with a slightly more futuristic and colourful aesthetic. I might even build several such mansions, which would all have the same general template, but each with their own unique variations. I would probably rent out a lot of the bedrooms to various guests though, as living in those mansions would be lonely if I was all by myself all the time.

Title: Re: Ask Stardust Soldier (aka. Ian)
Post by: StardustSoldier on April 29, 2019, 11:00:44 AM
As tempting as the former would be in some respects, I think in the long run it'd be unhealthy for me to get whatever I wanted all the time. Plus, the knowledge that it was just a virtual reality might dampen some of the enjoyment anyway. I'll pick real world. Sorry, Matrix. Maybe some other time.

Would you rather be able to control fire or water?
Title: Re: Ask Stardust Soldier (aka. Ian)
Post by: StardustSoldier on April 30, 2019, 10:18:09 PM
Good questions!

@ ImpracticalDino: My dream job is sorta what I was doing earlier in the year with all my freelance gigs. Specifically, writing and editing stories for people. I haven't had consistent enough gigs yet for it to be considered an "official" job, per say. But it's definitely something I could do full-time. I would also love to be a published novelist someday. And no, I have no plans to leave Canada. I'd probably be content to live here for the rest of my life.

@ Anagnos: Probably water. Controlling fire would be cool, but it also sounds like it might be dangerous.

I'm not sure if you saw it, but right as you posted, I edited my previous comment to offer a bit more information.

Anyway, most of my writing focus has been (and would like to be for the future) on fiction. As opposed to non-fiction. But aside from that, I have no specific area of literature. I would welcome many varieties and genres.

@ Anagnos: Definitely some sort of cat, whether it would be a domestic breed or a species of wildcat. Cats are by far and away my favourite animal. :)littlefoot

@ ImpracticalDino: Not that I can remember. Where I live, we pretty much always get lots of snow in winter. I don't usually mind, however. I have a higher tolerance for the cold than a lot of people.

Also, have you ever thought of bonding with a wild animal? (besides a cat if you're going to tell me you did with a stray)

What character would it be the most fun to change places with for a week? This isn't just LBT related, anything applies.  :)
Title: Re: Ask Stardust Soldier (aka. Ian)
Post by: StardustSoldier on May 05, 2019, 05:38:09 PM
@ ImpracticalDino: Just me and my cat right now. I don't want any other pets at the moment, largely because my cat does not like other animals at all. :P But I might get another cat someday. That's really the only species of pet I'd consider, though. I like some dogs, but I wouldn't want one of my own just because I wouldn't want the responsibility of having to walk it all the time. But it's kind of a moot point anyway since my apartment building doesn't allow dogs.

I have thought about bonding with a wild animal before, but only from a hypothetical standpoint. As in, I wonder what it would be like, but it's not a position I'd want to be in myself. I have seen videos on YouTube of people comfortably interacting with tigers and other wild animals, which is really cool, but I wouldn't be brave enough for something like that.

@ Anagnos: That's tough to say. There probably aren't a lot of characters I'd want to trade places with just because a lot of them live in dangerous worlds and I'd be afraid of dying. But I would love to be able to fly, so if I chose any character it would probably be one with flight.

Title: Re: Ask Stardust Soldier (aka. Ian)

@ ImpracticalDino: I like all kinds of music. I'm actually more forgiving with music than with any other art form, to the point that it's rare for me to hear a song I outright dislike. More than anything, however, I am a fan of classic rock. Just about any of those big-name rock or pop groups/artists from the 60s to the 80s I enjoy immensely. I'm also a big Paul McCartney fan in particular.

@ Anagnos: I'm typically not a "sing out loud" kind of guy. In fact, it's a pet peeve of mine when I'm hanging out with someone and listening to a song, and then the other person starts singing along to it, because then it distracts me from the song. :P I was recently singing a snippet from John Lennon's "Watching the Wheels", however, but that's rare for me as I usually don't sing at all.

@ Mumbling: I came up with all of them on my own. When I first discovered the "Ask Me" section of the forum, I brainstormed a bunch of questions to ask the members that I thought would be interesting. I have written them down on a document on my computer, though, so hence I have a bunch of them "in reserve" so to speak. But if you're getting tired of all the questions, I don't mind giving your thread a break.

But anyways, I think it's cool that you seem to be available at anytime.

*checks posting activity*

Oh, look at that. At this point I have managed to hit up every hour of the day. Which wasn't actually intentional on my part, although it is a pretty solid giveaway that I don't always go to bed at typical hours. People have joked before that I'm a vampire and/or that I don't sleep at all. :P

Contrary to how it may seem, I'm not on here 24/7 (even though I am quite active overall). Rather, it's more that my sleep schedule can be erratic and random. There have indeed been times when I've slept during the day and been awake at night, part of which I attribute to the fact that I am a night owl. Generally, though, I do try to maintain at least something of a normal sleep schedule.

8am - 10am, 5 & 6pm, and past midnight tend to be my most active times on here. Even when I'm on a good sleep pattern, I guess I just like to post either in the morning as I'm still waking up and before my day properly starts, or during the evening/suppertime when I'm just chilling at home. Or else at night once the day is done, before I go to bed and read.

So there's the detailed breakdown of my sleep/forum posting. :DD

People have joked before that I'm a vampire and/or that I don't sleep at all. :P

Hmph! x(cera And here is me thinking that I'm a vampire! :lol

I hate waking up early (not as early as high school anyway) and I would usually try to sleep in at least an hour or two. But...you can't do that when you have school five out of seven days of the week, can you? :cry

And as for reading, I'm more than halfway done with this Watership Down book I'm reading. I'll probably finish in 1-3 days, that how much I'm into it.

When I'm in my room, the first thing I always do is to check if the blinds are closed, and if they're open, I'll immediately shut them down! No sunlight gets to go into my room! Too bright, I tell you! Admittedly, I do get withdrawal from being in the darkness and maybe once in a blue moon I open my blinds a teeny tiny bit to let some light in. :P

More great questions!

@ Anagnos: I had to think about this one for a bit. Right now, I'm thinking that I might do a museum of city street names and history. Which may seem like an odd answer, but as of lately I've taken an interest in learning about the street history in my own city, and I've been finding it quite fascinating.

@ ImpracticalDino: Not necessarily one specific moment, but I would love to be able to spend more time with either my grandfather, or else my first cat, Patches. I still miss them.

What was the darkest movie you’ve ever seen?
Title: Re: Ask Stardust Soldier (aka. Ian)
Post by: StardustSoldier on May 14, 2019, 09:48:05 AM
The first movie that came to mind was The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2. Even though I have seen darker, it's the darkest I've seen in the past few years, and by far the darkest in a series that was already quite grim. There were some brutal deaths, and the film itself just has such a dreary, downtrodden tone to it.

Going back further, there was this adaptation of Dracula/Vlad the Impaler that I saw many years ago at a party with my friends. I can't remember the exact name of the film, but it was quite gruesome, and Vlad certainly lived up to the "impaler" part of his name. :DD

Also at a party with my friends once, I saw Pan's Labyrinth. That was messed up...

If I can include TV shows, I'd also like to nominate several episodes of The X-Files. That show could get awfully graphic and disturbing sometimes.

@ImpracticalDino: I struggled a lot with grade school growing up. That wasn't to say it was all bad or anything. There were definitely fun times, and I got to meet a lot of cool people. Especially the friends I made during that time, and all the parties and fun hang-outs we used to have, which I think in many ways helped me survive my school years. But there was also a lot of hardship with things like bullies, and I got bullied a lot. I likewise struggled with the work load and/or not doing well in many of my classes. I'm also autistic, and while I am much more well-adjusted now, that is certainly something that made socializing with others hard, and also contributed to a lot of my struggles with course work and the school curriculum.

As to which school years I consider the best, I'd have to say once I was at the college. I still struggled a lot with post-secondary as well, but thankfully there were no more bullies, and overall it was a more stable environment. In particular, while I didn't care for Multimedia Production a whole lot (the program I ultimately got my degree in), the couple or so years when I took General Studies were generally a lot more fun. :DD I had a really awesome teacher too.

Before post-secondary, however, my high school years were probably the best (which for me was Grades 9-12). Again, it wasn't an easy time, but the number of bullies had largely thinned out, I had more friends at that point, and I was slowly but surely learning to adjust. If nothing else, anything was better than junior high. ::)

@Anagnos: My initial response was going to be dragons. And while I do think they are neat creatures, having them in real life could be very potentially dangerous. :o So I'd probably go with a hippogriff instead.

Not unless that dragon in real life happens to be Spike the Dragon. :DD

@StardustSoldier
That sounds like a very harsh experience from elementary to middle school. I sympathize with you, because it's one thing to be bullied. But it's another thing to be bullied with autism. You must of felt very awkward all the time, maybe feeling that you didn't fit in with the others? But certainly, you wouldn't care about trivial things like that. Also, I'm glad that you were able to overcome your adversities. Cherish the good moments you've had and never forget the friends that have surrounded you and made you feel better. While the bad moments may still hurt, never forget any lessons that were brought with it. Bullies suck, don't they? The only reason why they do it is either because they're insecure about themselves, they've been bullied themselves before, or just for malicious intent to get harsh reactions from people. But yeah, it's not surprising that the amount of bullies have dwindled to a minimum in high school and college. People are more mature there and better as individuals. Although, there will always be some people who um...skip classes, do drugs, get into fights, bully others, but that's to be expected. Congratulations though, you always held your spirits high throughout this ordeal, I'm sure of it. :DD

I've had bully free record going through school so far. Then again, bullying awareness is through the roof these days and nobody would dare to try and belittle others anymore.

Or Spyro the Dragon. Those are two dragons I'd be completely okay with.

@ Anagnos: I enjoy chocolate or vanilla-covered pretzels. Which I guess isn't really all that strange, but it seems like the salty/sweet contrast would be gross, and yet I really enjoy it. I'm also a big fan of white rice and soy sauce. Another favourite of mine is putting ketchup and mayo together, especially if it's on a burger. More generally, I have a habit of mixing different beverages together, even though some of my concoctions don't always turn out that great...

@ ImpracticalDino: No. Although a year ago my father, quite randomly, asked me if I'd be interested in joining him and my brother for a hot yoga class at the university. To the best of my knowledge, my dad has never done yoga before, let alone hot yoga, so I'm not sure what gave him that idea. :DD

Right now I'm only taking driving lessons. I've been to quite many already, so I feel like I have learned a great deal. The thing that worries me the most is the test I have to take. And I drive with a manual.  ;)

What word is a lot of fun to say?
Title: Re: Ask Stardust Soldier (aka. Ian)
Post by: StardustSoldier on May 26, 2019, 02:42:01 PM
@ ImpracticalDino: Nah, nothing overtly wrong happened. But there are a few different reasons why I don't drive...

1) Probably the biggest reason is because owning a vehicle is so expensive. It's less that I'm concerned with the initial cost, and more that the idea of yearly car insurance is a big turn-off. I don't have enough of an income right now to be able to comfortably afford it. Granted, I could probably simply borrow my mother's jeep if I did drive. However...

2) My mom and brother already share the jeep between them (as my brother doesn't own a vehicle of his own), and between the two of them they use it quite a lot. If I used it as well, then that'd be three of us sharing one vehicle, which could make things overly complicated and/or be inconvenient, or else it might simply limit how much I could use the jeep. This isn't as major of an issue as all my other reasons, but it is something I've thought about.

3) I'll admit I'm uneasy with the mere idea of driving. The intricacies of the road and dealing with other people's road rage is something I'm apprehensive about. It probably wouldn't be so bad if I got used to driving, but all the same, I've never had a strong desire to want to drive, not even when I was younger.

4) Sort or related to the above. There actually was a brief time several years ago when I was learning how to drive and my mother was teaching me, so I have had a bit of practice with it, but I ultimately never really got into it.

5) Overall, I'm not in a position where I need to be driving anyway. There are friends and family members who are generous enough to give me rides if necessary, but otherwise I'm able to just walk or take the bus anywhere I need to go.

@ Anagnos: "Photosynthesis" is the first word that popped into my head, although I don't think I've used it since high school. :P In more recent years, I'd probably go with "drastically"; I just like the way it sounds for some reason.

I am thinking that driving seems very easy based on my observations, but is it harder than it looks?
Anyways, I hope you're able to get past that uneasiness! :yes

I can say that when I'm driving I usually get nervous. Fortunately, it has gotten better compared to when I first began to drive. Just listen to your teacher and even if you make a mistake, that's okay. We learn best by making them, right?  ;)

What would you name your boat if you had one?
Title: Re: Ask Stardust Soldier (aka. Ian)

@ ImpracticalDino: Mmm, no, I wouldn't say it's harder than it looks. At least, not based off my experiences with it. For my aforementioned reasons, I just didn't get into driving for very long, and currently it's not something I'm actively pursuing. But we'll see what the future holds.

@ Anagnos: I was originally going to say "Treestar", but I don't know if that would be a good name for a water vehicle, per say. So I might go with "Stardust" instead.

For the most part, not really, as the things I genuinely enjoy aren't things I feel guilty about. But if I had to give one example, the Vanilla Ice song "Play That Funky Music" comes to mind. The lyrics are incredibly corny, and I'm normally not much of a hip-hop guy anyway. Yet I really enjoy that song all the same because it's just so fun and catchy. :P

Do you play any board games? If so, name a favorite if you have one.
Title: Re: Ask Stardust Soldier (aka. Ian)
Post by: StardustSoldier on June 02, 2019, 04:30:58 PM
Yes, I do play board games. Not that often, but I enjoy it when I do.

Even though I hadn't thought about it in a while, "Buzz and Flutter's Big Electronic Game Book" popped into my head the moment I saw your question. That might be my favourite board game, or at least one of them. It's quite obscure and I haven't played it in years now, but I remember as a kid me and my mother used to have a lot of fun with it.

In fact, you've inspired me. I think I'm going to go order another copy of it so I can play it again for old time's sake.

Anyway, you can read about the game here:

How do you feel about putting pineapple on pizza?  :^^spike
Title: Re: Ask Stardust Soldier (aka. Ian)
Post by: StardustSoldier on June 03, 2019, 05:10:30 PM
@ ImpracticalDino: Yes, although it tends to be pretty basic. Mostly either Sidekicks (a brand of pasta), or else I like to fry up a pack of bacon. Or sometimes I'll prefer beef for tacos. Generally I'm just not the biggest fan of cooking, but once in a while I like to branch out and try something new.

@ Anagnos: Doesn't appeal to me much. I enjoy pineapple by itself, but the sweetness of pineapple doesn't mesh well with the saltiness of pizza, imo. There are other sweet/salty food combinations I enjoy, but that isn't one of them. But then again, I generally don't like lots of different ingredients on my pizza anyway. Either basic cheese pizza or simple pepperoni are my favourite pizzas, although I am fine with various other meats like ham and bacon bits.

Suburban, which is where I live right now. Although I'm sure that's largely because it's what I've lived in for all my life and it's what I'm used to. Conversely, my father and step-mother, who grew up in rural environments, prefer it there.

It stands out all the more because I've been in some really toxic, unpleasant, and even abusive online communities in the past, so this is a refreshing change of pace.

@ Anagnos: Spending a fun day with friends and family, eating pizza for supper, listening to oldies music later that evening, and then relaxing in the hot tub before bed.

Do you have phobias of anything in particular?
Title: Re: Ask Stardust Soldier (aka. Ian)
Post by: StardustSoldier on June 05, 2019, 11:32:40 AM
@ Anagnos: None of these are really confined to specific years, but there's a few things I have fond memories of, often related to various homes I've lived in or visited:

- Visiting family in British Columbia, and hanging out at either my grandmother & grandfather's house, or else my aunt & uncle's house. In particular, I loved spending time in my aunt & uncle's hot tub, and I remember one night when we had "oldies night" and we all took turns listening to various songs from the 60s to 80s. Or else one afternoon when me and my mom and aunt were sitting out on the lawn with Bacardi Breezers.

- Shortly after my mother divorced my father, she moved into this set of condo buildings and I lived there with her and my brother for a few years. I have consistently fond memories of that home.

- For that matter, the house my mother and father (and me and my brother) lived in before my parents divorced. I lived there for 10 years, and it was such a lovely home. My father and I didn't always get along back then, so there was a lot of strife as well. But all in all, out of all the places I've ever lived in, that's the one I miss the most. I wish my family still owned that house.

- For a more recent memory, my mother and I went on a road trip last year, and that was a lot of fun. Especially the couple of nights where we stayed at a hot springs resort.

@ ImpracticalDino: I remember as a kid, I used to have a very strong phobia of wasps, although I've gotten over it since then. In my adults years... well, I have a strong fear of being rejected, which is a factor in why I've been single all my life. I don't know if that would count as a "phobia" per say, but in all honesty it is one of my biggest fears.

Yes. Ironically it happened when we became further apart literally; as in, once I was no longer living with him. Him and I had a major personality clash when we still lived under the same roof. But once I was able to move away and into my own place, our relationship noticeably began to improve. It was sometimes a rocky road even after that, but by and large him and I do get along consistently better now. It helps that, over the past several years, we've both grown and matured a lot as people, and we understand each other better than we used to.

@ ImpracticalDino: There were many major lessons that I learned the hard way. There's a lot of things in my life that, looking back, involved a lot of trial-and-error, perhaps more than I would have liked. Although there were some things that came naturally as well.

@ Anagnos: The first thing that came to mind was a lightsaber, but I don't know how practical that would be in day-to-day living. Not to mention dangerous. :Mo

So I'd probably go with a cloaking device instead. Turning invisible would be cool. :duckyhappy

Title: Re: Ask Stardust Soldier (aka. Ian)

Yes to all three of those.

When I'm not residing in Alberta, the province I visit the most is British Columbia, as I have extended family out there. I typically visit BC at least once a year. In fact, I'm going out there again later this summer. :) I have also been to Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and Newfoundland, albeit for much more sporadic visits.

As for other countries, I've only ever been outside of Canada a few times in my life. But I have been to the United States more than once. I also went on a cruise one time and I got to visit Mexico, as well as a couple other countries further south of Mexico (I forget which ones exactly, but it may have been Guatemala and Belize).

Title: Re: Ask Stardust Soldier (aka. Ian)

Anagnos: It varies, but typically I'd say around 30-45 minutes. If I'm in a rush I can fit it into around 20 minutes.

ImpracticalDino: That's hard to say because I've never seen one in my neighborhood. In fact, my city doesn't seem to have ice cream trucks at all for some reason. We certainly have ice cream stores, but I can't remember the last time I saw an ice cream truck, here or elsewhere.

Title: Re: Ask Stardust Soldier (aka. Ian)
Post by: StardustSoldier on June 22, 2019, 04:52:57 PM
Anagnos: A bit of both. I was definitely more of an introvert when I was younger; a large part of that was because of my social anxiety. It's less of an issue for me nowadays, and I have opened up more as a result. I likewise have more of a social life than I used to. I'm a member of three different book clubs, as an example. That said, I'm still shy sometimes and I do tend to be rather subdued in large group settings. I enjoy my quiet and alone time as well, and I like living on my own. I'm happy to go out and engage in social activities, but I like coming home to my own nest at the end of the day.

ImpracticalDino: Yes. Not as much as some other genres, but every now and then I enjoy listening to it.

Title: Re: Ask Stardust Soldier (aka. Ian)
Post by: StardustSoldier on June 24, 2019, 12:51:41 PM
Anagnos: That was a tough question to think of an answer to because I'm a pretty honest person for the most part. Even on the infrequent occasions when I do lie about something, it tends to either be a white lie so as to avoid hurting someone's feelings, and/or is a fairly insignificant issue anyway. Although that said, I can remember one time when I was a kid, I was over at a friend's house and he had all these impressive Lego structures built. When no-one was looking, I wrecked some of the structures... and then blamed it on my friend's little brother.

I still don't know if that's my "biggest" lie necessarily. I feel like there's probably an even better story buried in my memories somewhere, but that's what springs to mind right now.

ImpracticalDino: Thankfully not.

I don't have a single favourite (outside of "If We Hold On Together"), as I'll admit that I just wasn't the biggest fan of many of the sequel songs, but there were a few I actually did enjoy. "Standing Tough", "Big Water", "Always There", "The Legend of the Lone Dinosaur", "Bad Luck", and "Bestest Friends" all stand out to me. I'd need to see the sequels again sometime, as I can't remember all the songs off the top of my head and so there might be a few other good ones I'm overlooking.

Hah, well given my time on the internet, I feel that there's a lot of potential answers I could give. :smile

But, right now specifically, "The Destruction of Commercial Scum" comes to mind. That is probably the single most disgusting album cover I've ever seen. I actually looked it up again just now out of morbid curiosity, and I literally started gagging...

I'd been thinking of changing it for quite a while. I still love that group hug, but I just felt like mixing it up and doing something different.

Yes, it's a photo from the internet, although I can't remember from where exactly I downloaded it. I think I just did a Google search for "Stardust" or "Stars" or something like that. I've had it stored on my computer for a long time.

What is the capacity/volume of your personal water bottle/carrier?
Title: Re: Ask Stardust anything
Post by: StardustSoldier on August 09, 2019, 06:05:51 PM
It holds up to 24 oz. Despite all the walking and hiking I do, however, I usually don't carry my water bottle around with me on my adventures as I don't like having to walk and carry something with me at the same time (unless it's a backpack). So instead, I usually leave it at home and put it in the freezer so I can have nice cold ice water.

Post by: StardustSoldier on August 17, 2019, 09:41:53 PM
Hah, well I do happen to like pink. I've always thought the "pink is a girl's colour" stereotype is silly, which helped inspire me to purchase those headphones.

But it's not my favourite. That would be green, specifically bright green.
Title: Re: Ask Stardust anything

Well, if anyone calls you out on it, just say that the color isn't pink, it's salmon! That should solve your problem.

...Right? :p

What is the most painful sensation you have ever felt?
Title: Re: Ask Stardust anything
Post by: StardustSoldier on August 17, 2019, 09:58:03 PM
Oh, they can call me out on it if they want. I don't care. I don't need to justify myself to them. :p

...actually, come to think of it, I like your "salmon" answer. I'll have to remember to use that if anyone does ever comment on my headphones. :smile

Hmm, well it's probably not the most painful per say, but one of the most gruesome. I was at a friend's swimming pool, and I slipped and banged my chin on the top of the metal bar that you use to climb out of the pool. The force of hitting myself caused me to bite into my tongue and I drew blood. Either way, it still hurt quite a lot.

There was also another time when I burned my chin on a heated stove top. I seem to have a thing for chin-related injuries.

Not that I can remember. If I ever was infected, it wasn't anything significant or that did long-term damage. I do have an anti-virus program which occasionally catches files that are supposedly infected and gets rid of them for me, but I've never had any serious malware problems.

Title: Re: Ask Stardust anything

My first ever job was a janitorial position at a sporting goods/camping store. I worked there part-time while I was still in high school. I got the job because my (then-current) step-father owned the store. I remember I didn't really care for the job at the time, but in hindsight I wish I'd given it more of a chance. The extra money was certainly nice. That said, however, it was around fifteen or so years ago now, so I don't remember the first day specifically.

(please correct me if I end up asking this to the wrong person)

Just a few months ago, you managed to watch all 14 LBT movies, many of which for the very first time, yet you have apparently still not yet seen any of the TV episodes (26 in total, since it lasted only one season). Any particular reason why you're not in as much of a rush to see the TV episodes as you were to see the movies?
Title: Re: Ask Stardust anything
Post by: StardustSoldier on September 15, 2019, 03:29:07 AM
@ImpracticalDino: I could probably name quite a few if I thought about it long enough. Off the top of my head, Super Mario All-Stars and Super Mario World (both for SNES) come to mind. Spent many fun days playing those in the basement of my parents' old house, and I still love Mario platformers to this day.

@The Chronicler: Yep, that's correct. When I originally joined the forum, it was only the first movie I'd seen as an adult. Although it didn't take long before I watched the sequels, as I wanted to be able to more openly discuss the rest of the series with everyone, and that way I also wouldn't have to worry about spoilers any more (and I was curious to see the rest of the movies regardless).

But yeah, I'll admit that, as of right now, I'm not that enthusiastic about seeing the TV show. For a few reasons.

For one thing, I've seen quite a few lukewarm comments about it, even from this very community. Normally I'm a firm believer in that people should just make up their own minds about something, since it's all subjective anyway. At the same time however, seeing that even some of the more avid LBT fans don't really care for the TV series, and it thus hasn't drummed up a lot of enthusiasm in me to see it myself.

The other thing is that, while I enjoyed most of the early sequels, it went downhill for me after the tenth film. #11-14 I wasn't all that crazy about, even if there were a few bright spots here and there. And perhaps related to that, I felt burnt out after I finished my initial marathon of the movies, so I needed a bit of a break from LBT anyway.

All that said, I do still plan to see the TV series at some point, partly for the sake of completionism, but it'll be more of a "when it happens" thing.

Do you own any Pokemon games?
Title: Re: Ask Stardust anything
Post by: StardustSoldier on September 24, 2019, 11:12:40 AM
Oh yes. My brother and I were huge into Pokemon growing up. We owned Pokemon Red, Blue, and two copies of Yellow (one each for my brother and myself), as well as Pokemon Stadium and Pokemon Puzzle League, along with many of the trading cards.

After Generation II, I slowly began to lose interest in Pokemon, although my bro was still into it for a while. I know he owned either Gold or Silver, as well as Crystal. And again in Generation III, he owned either Ruby or Sapphire, Emerald, & either FireRed or LeafGreen. For Generation IV, he owned either Diamond or Pearl, Platinum, & either HeartGold and SoulSilver (too lazy to pick appropriate colours for these :p). After that, though, he wasn't into Pokemon either.

I considered adding Pokemon Stadium 2 to my collection as a kid as well, but I never got around to it. Several years ago when I was still in college, I also considered getting back into Pokemon and doing an epic playthrough of all the main series titles, but again, I didn't get around to it.

My brother and I have many fond memories of playing Puzzle League in particular, and we would even play with each other well into adulthood, after we'd both otherwise moved on from Pokemon.

Was being a writer your first career choice, or did you major or wanted to be in another profession?
Title: Re: Ask Stardust anything
Post by: StardustSoldier on September 26, 2019, 12:06:45 AM
That's a bit of a tough question to answer, as while I've been passionate about writing for as long as I can remember, I haven't always thought of it as a career option, necessarily. I do have dreams of having my own novels published someday, but I don't really consider that a "career", in the sense that it's unlikely I'd ever make a stable income from it. That would certainly be awesome if I did, but for the near future at least, my fiction writing is a hobby more than anything.

Granted, I have had successful ghostwriting/editing jobs, but I've only been doing that for about a year. That, and I am job hunting for something else at the moment.

So to answer the question directly, I'd say no, being a writer wasn't my first career choice, although I'm not sure what was my first choice. I did get a diploma in Multimedia Production at the college a few years ago, though it ultimately wasn't where my passion lay.

What is one quote that inspires you in life, if any?
Title: Re: Ask Stardust anything
Post by: StardustSoldier on September 27, 2019, 11:33:29 PM
I remember reading somewhere, "You'll regret the things you didn't do more than the things you did do." That always stuck with me. That, and, "I've learned that most of the things I worry about never happen." Very true indeed.

As far as movie quotes go, I've always loved this exchange from The Fellowship of the Ring:

Frodo: "I wish the ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened."
Gandalf: "So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us."

Even I think it looks weird. :P Although I was pleased to discover that the forum supports transparency in avatar images. :cerahappy

My first exposure to Baldi's Basics was in this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxfnZNWJFL0) by Level UP, a YouTuber I'm a casual fan of. Although the first time I watched the video, I didn't know who Baldi was and so I was pretty weirded out. But then I looked up what the game was about and watched a few playthroughs it, and then I eventually downloaded it and played it myself.

Baldi's Basics can get frustrating, and it's a pretty hard game too (I haven't even beaten it), but overall I do enjoy playing it. And I like the game's quirky style of humour. Although what I'm really looking forward to is the full retail version that'll contain random levels, which I think is a fantastic idea and would really enhance the game.

Owls: For the most part, not really. I do enjoy gazing up at the nighttime sky sometimes, but it's not really an active hobby, per say. As for why it's my username, I just wanted something that sounded sort of mystical and magical. It was an offshoot of my previous online handle "SunriseWarrior".

Impractical: I can't think of any one specific thing I'd want to say to an animal, but it would be pretty cool to be able to talk to them. I guess it'd mostly be cats and dogs I'd talk to since they're the animals I see most often. In particular, I could talk to my pet cat and figure out why he often whines at me... even though in most cases it's probably just either food or attention he wants. :p I also remember visiting the zoo several years ago; it would've been neat to talk to some of the wild animals there.

OwlsCantRead: I generally manage to get an average of around eight hours a night. Even though I have erratic sleep patterns (or rather, lack of patterns) and each individual night varies, if I have enough poor sleep nights in a row, eventually I'm able to make up for the lost sleep on a different night.

ImpracticalDino: I think only my mom and brother know that I'm a fan (as well as one of my friends from book club), but they're both okay with it. Neither of them are the type who would be judgmental about it. I'll admit that I'm still a bit shy sometimes with admitting my LBT fandom to others.

Title: Re: Ask Stardust anything
Post by: StardustSoldier on October 17, 2019, 10:31:18 AM
Each of my book clubs meets once a month. The fourth one I joined is very recent (it started up just this September), so it hasn't been around long enough to have established any real theme. Of the other three: one of them exclusively does young-adult books. The other two both focus on adult books, but one of them is managed by my local library and so it tends to be older books (since they're used copies you check out from the library), while the other is managed by a restaurant/cafe and they order in new copies of the books for people to read, and so the cafe club books tend to be newer releases.

All of us read the same book for each meeting in each club. The exception is the young-adult club, which often does single books as well, but there's been several times where we instead did a general theme and we each picked our own book within that theme, or else there was a selection of two or three different books that we could choose from.

As for the genre, there's nothing specific. We've covered a vast variety. Mostly fiction, but there's been a few non-fiction ones too.

Title: Re: Ask Stardust anything
Post by: StardustSoldier on October 21, 2019, 08:25:53 PM
OwlsCantRead: I don't have a problem with e-books and e-readers, necessarily. I own a Kindle of my own and it's seen some good usage. If a physical copy of a book is unavailable, then I do prefer reading it on an e-reader as opposed to on my computer screen. An e-reader is nice because then I can take it to bed with me, and I love reading books in bed at night. However, by and large physical books are still my top preference, and they're what I tend to default to. And in fact, it's been a while now since I've used my Kindle, just because I haven't needed to use it lately.

ImpracticalDino: For the most part, not really. They're all nice people and we get along fine. But since three of my four clubs I joined in this year alone, I haven't yet had a lot of time to really get to know everyone. However, there is one person in one of the clubs whom I've known since high school, and I consider her to be a friend. In fact, she's the only book club attendee that I didn't originally meet through book club.

ImpracticalDino: I tend to be a visual learner. If I'm learning something new for the first time, it's easier for me to see the process performed in action as opposed to, say, reading from a set of instructions.

OwlsCantRead: I do have a water bottle, but I don't bring it around with me much. I usually just keep it at home and put it in the freezer so I can have ice-cold water. It holds 24 oz.

Anagnos: As others have already expressed, probably not very long. I just can't see myself doing well in such a situation. On Discord, I seem to remember making a comparison to Shaun of the Dead. But then again, hopefully I wouldn't do anything that stupid as some of those characters. :p

OwlsCantRead: My current eyes are a hazel colour, but if given the choice, I'd probably go for a more vibrant/pure green (without looking unnatural), since I think pure green eyes are gorgeous, and green is my favourite colour in general.

If you could learn 4 Pokémon moves, what would each one be?
Title: Re: Ask Stardust anything
Post by: StardustSoldier on November 13, 2019, 03:05:39 PM
A disclaimer that I haven't played much Pokemon in a long time (and it was limited to the older games anyway), so there's a lot of great moves that I'm probably overlooking. But off the top of my head, this is what came to me:

Pay Day - Easily my top choice. I mean, you get free money every time you use it. What could be better than that? :DD

Metronome - Potentially a bad idea if I was doing this in real life (especially if I wound up with Self-Destruct o_O), but I've always loved the randomness of this move. It's fun to use this move and just see what happens.

Rest - Getting a good night's sleep is always pleasant. Even better if it would heal all injuries in the process.

Fly - I've always thought being able to fly in itself would be really cool. In the case of Pokemon, it also has the nifty advantage of being able to take you to any town or city that you want, and it's an effective attack in general.

This might be a bit personal, so you don't really have to elaborate, but were you aware of what happened to Judith Barsi during your initial viewing of the original LBT?

How did it impact you with regards to Ducky on the initial viewing/future viewings (depending on the case) of the movie, and how did you react if/when you did/already found out about the tragedy, and through what means did you first learn of this sad case to begin with? :(

Title: Re: Ask Stardust anything
Post by: StardustSoldier on November 21, 2019, 01:48:01 PM
Regarding Judith Barsi, I can't remember ever knowing anything about it as a kid. Perhaps I did, but if so, I forgot about it over time. I was vaguely aware of it by the time I rented the movie from the library as an adult for my initial viewing, but I didn't know the exact details of what happened, and I got so absorbed into the movie that I otherwise wasn't thinking about it while watching.

It wasn't until afterwards, once I'd been transformed into an LBT fan, that I learned more about it. There wasn't really one specific place where I found out; I just slowly started to hear about it more and more. I can certainly remember feeling numb and sick once I knew the full story (and I still am). Although that said, it hasn't really impacted future LBT viewings, in the sense that when I watch a movie I'm not always actively thinking about the real-life actors behind it. As in, when I watch the first two Harry Potter movies, I'm not necessarily thinking about Richard Harris as Dumbledore passing away. I just see Dumbledore on the screen.

For Pokémon ability, what exactly do you mean? Different from Pokémon moves?

It’s like a passive effect that comes with each Pokémon that can affect certain outcomes of the battle.

For a list of all abilities, refer to this link. Have fun! :)

Ah, okay. If it was a mechanic introduced in Generation III, that explains why I don't have a lot of familiarity with it. Although I do remember the card game had something similar with Pokémon Powers.

I didn't browse through the entire list, but Super Luck does look appetizing. :yes

Abilities were a staple from Gen 3 onwards, so does this mean you're not as well-versed with the Pokémon series as a whole?

That is correct. My experience with Pokemon is largely confined to Gen 1. I explained in more detail here (http://www.gangoffive.net/index.php?topic=16335.msg491178#msg491178).

I’m curious, what’s your opinion on the current state of Pokémon as it is right now? Do you think the outrage of the fans are justified? If you’re not interested on answering this question, then that is fine.

If the above question is too controversial, then what is your favorite Gen 1 Pokémon? :p
Title: Re: Ask Stardust anything
Post by: StardustSoldier on November 22, 2019, 12:02:25 AM
It's not that I'm not interested in answering the question, per say, but rather that I don't have much of an answer, just because I haven't actively followed Pokémon in years. I can't really say if I think fans' outrage is justified as I don't know enough about the situation. I am aware that Pokémon Let's Go and Sword/Shield have been controversial, but I don't know a lot of specifics.

As for my favourite Gen 1 Pokémon, I was initially going to say Pikachu, but that seems a bit too obvious of an answer. Thinking deeper, I remember I really liked Dragonite as a kid, as well as Polywag and its evolutions, Geodude and its evolutions, and the legendary birds, in particular Articuno.

Not often, but once in a while I did. I have seen other playthroughs of the games though, so I still have an idea of what the later generations are like.

ImpracticalDino: Yes, I was certainly afraid of the dark as a kid, and even into my teenage years at times.

OwlsCantRead: Favourite platform game of all time would be a four-way tie between Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, and Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2. For a non-Mario title, possibly Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest.

As for the one I'm best at, probably any Mario game, as I've played so much Mario in general.

Do you prefer a Canadian Autumn or Canadian Winter?
Title: Re: Ask Stardust anything
Post by: StardustSoldier on February 06, 2021, 01:02:42 AM
Thanks for the questions. This thread hadn't been updated much in a while. :)

@Compsognathus: I sure do, haha. I don't utterly hate it or anything, and I do have a good dentist. But yeah, whenever a dentist appointment is coming up for me, I never look forward to it, and it's always one of those obligatory things that you don't want to do but you know you have to.

@Littlefoot1616: As it happens, I do have my 3000th post coming up soon and I have something special planned for that; been planning it for quite a while actually. I'm not sure if counts as a fanwork per say. As in, it's not a story or a drawing. But it is LBT-related. You'll see soon enough. ;-)

@Enchanted-Valley96: I like all of the seasons for slightly different reasons. Between autumn and winter, however, I am definitely more partial to autumn. In fact, autumn is often a very nostalgic and magical time for me. Something about when the trees are turning yellow and it's just starting to get colder out, it evokes a strange sense of wistfulness that I seldom ever get at any other time of the year.

Littlefoot immediately sprang to mind, but that seems like an obvious choice. :)

Outside of Littlefoot, I'd say Guido seems like he'd be a good friend.

And outside of LBT, I might pick Jenny from My Life as a Teenage Robot.

From my home in Alberta, Canada, the furthest I've ever been would be down in South America, a little further south from Mexico. I forget which country exactly, but it was during a cruise I took way back in 2005 and one of the countries we briefly stopped at was a little below Mexico.

Have you ever been to other provinces in Canada?
Title: Re: Ask Stardust anything
Post by: StardustSoldier on February 17, 2021, 10:26:18 AM
@Compsognathus: I chuckled at this question. :lol Yes, I have seen a wild skunk before. Not often, but a few times in my life. I did get quite startled one time when I turned the corner in a street and a skunk was right in front of me. I jumped, it jumped, and then we both turned and ran in opposite directions of each other. :p But overall, no, I'm not particularly afraid of them. I would not want a pet skunk though, even if it had its scent gland removed.

@Enchanted-Valley96: I have indeed! British Columbia is by far the province outside of Alberta I've visited the most, as I have extended family who live there and I usually visit them at least once a year. :) I also have a few other family members in Ontario and Newfoundland, so I've been there a few times as well.

@Enchanted-Valley96: This is a bit of a tricky question to answer, in that I don't watch many cartoons these days. And of the ones I can remember, I seldom take note of where they was produced. That said, I did enjoy Redwall a lot when I was a kid.

Enchanted-Valley96: I enjoy both roughly the same. Sometimes it depends on my mood. Related to that, I enjoy both raunchy and melodious songs.

1.Should you have an option to change one crucial moment in any movie, and watch the rest of the movie, and sequels to see, how the story will be different, what movie would it be?
Title: Re: Ask Stardust anything
Post by: StardustSoldier on April 03, 2021, 11:14:12 AM
Ooh, that's a great question!
:thinking

Also the perfect excuse for the Star Wars fan in me to geek out for a bit. :p

A disclaimer that I would still want to have access to the original versions of the movies. But I would change the famous twist in The Empire Strikes Back so that Luke and Anakin are not related at all. Even though I do think it's a great twist, but at the same time it would have been an interesting "what if?" to see how the rest of the Star Wars story would've played out without that revelation, since it completely changed the trajectory of the series from that point on.

Also, even though I love Return of the Jedi, it would also have been interesting to see how future of the franchise would've played out if RotJ hadn't been rewritten to wrap up the saga right there and then, as per George Lucas's original plans.

Depends on whether or not I'm able to sleep in the next day (sort of). :DD

For real though, it varies. I am a night owl by nature, although I do try to maintain a relatively normal sleep cycle throughout the week, which sometimes means cutting my sleep a bit shorter by getting out of bed earlier. Although the success of maintaining a consistent cycle varies, and I sometimes alternate between good and bad cycles per week.

Yep yep yep! I used to own one too, although I think it's long gone now. I used to listen to lots of The Beatles especially since they were my favourite band.

'Abbey Road' is my favourite album of theirs. 'Let It Be' is my second favourite (the original version, which I prefer to 'Let It Be Naked').

I do. Fantastic music all around. "Golden Slumbers" especially is hauntingly beautiful.

On Itunes you can link songs together on a CD and I'm pleased that I linked the Abbey Road Medley together. How did you get into The Beatles?

It's kind of a weird yet funny story.

Many years ago, back when I was still in high school. My step-dad's name was Byron. One year for his upcoming birthday, my mother suggested that the family all get him gifts which started with the letter 'B'. I was browsing the CD section in London Drugs and I noticed The Beatles '1' compilation album was for sale. Since it fit with the 'B' theme, I decided it'd be the perfect gift. I had heard of The Beatles, but I wasn't familiar with their music beyond that.

My step-dad ended up not really using the CD, and so I just took it for myself. I listened to it for the first time and I immediately fell in love with their music. :yes

I have, although "Miracle Man" is the only song of his that I'm familiar with.

What do you think about Cody Arens as Littlefoot and Max Burkholder as Chomper?
Title: Re: Ask Stardust anything
Post by: StardustSoldier on July 12, 2023, 10:53:33 AM
Hmm. It's a bit hard to say regarding Cody Arens. Just because Littlefoot had so many different voice actors and many of them blurred together for me. That, and I haven't seen the movies or TV series in a while now and I don't quite remember what everyone sounded like exactly. But I never had any issues with Littlefoot's voice when I was watching through the TV series, and so I'd say that Cody did a fine job overall.

Max Burkholder was definitely the best Chomper though.

Do you think that using boys instead of one adult woman gave Littlefoot more childlike realism?
Title: Re: Ask Stardust anything
Post by: StardustSoldier on July 12, 2023, 10:59:42 AM
Absolutely yes. Generally I prefer it when they have actual kids to voice child characters. Even though I understand why they use adults in some cases, since managing child actors isn't always easy. But if they can get a good child actor, then all the better. Even if the adult still does a good job at sounding young, often you can still sorta tell that the voice isn't actually coming from a real child.

Haha, I haven't seen that show in such a long time, so I don't quite remember what the voices were like. I used to watch it fairly often back when I was still a kid myself though.

Have you ever seen the cartoon Redwall?
Title: Re: Ask Stardust anything
Post by: StardustSoldier on July 12, 2023, 11:08:10 AM
I watched it a few times at my grandparents' house, though I don't remember it all that well. I do remember reading the first Redwall book though; that I can still remember fairly well. It was a good book.

What is your first question to an English person if you end up speaking to one?
Title: Re: Ask Stardust anything
Post by: StardustSoldier on July 12, 2023, 11:11:07 AM
You mean, as opposed to if I'm talking to someone who speaks a different language?

An English tourist, somebody from England on vacation.

Post by: StardustSoldier on July 12, 2023, 11:15:28 AM
Oh, okay. Honestly though, I can't recall speaking with any tourists in recent years, so I'm not sure what I'd think of to be the first thing to ask them.

Have you been to Toronto?
Title: Re: Ask Stardust anything
Post by: StardustSoldier on July 12, 2023, 11:21:44 AM
Yes, I have! I've been there twice. The first time was a long time ago when I was a kid or a teen. During a family vacation, I remember we visited the CN Tower. The second time was in 2018 when I attended my cousin's wedding.

Does English Canada have a grudge against French Canada (Quebec)?
Title: Re: Ask Stardust anything

Huh, not as far as I'm aware. Or at least, I don't know anyone who does. But I also don't actively follow politics and such, so it probably isn't the sort of thing I'd know much about if there is a grudge.

What do you think of Disney VHS/DVD sequels?
Title: Re: Ask Stardust anything
Post by: StardustSoldier on July 14, 2023, 12:49:16 PM
Haha, well I've certainly heard that they tend to get a bad rap. I can't really say for myself because I haven't seen most of them. I saw the Aladdin and Lion King sequels when I was a kid, but I don't remember them all that well. In more recent years, I also saw Return to Never Land, which was okay, and Brother Bear 2, which was decent.

Do you like furry fandom?
Title: Re: Ask Stardust anything
Post by: StardustSoldier on July 21, 2023, 01:27:26 PM
Enchanted-Valley96: A lot of things, really. Just about any food that I enjoy, I'd be willing to have for supper. Pizza, cheeseburgers, and chicken wings are among my favourite foods in general. But even something like eggs, bacon, and toast, a traditionally 'breakfast' meal, is something I'll have for supper once in a while.

Compsognathus: I do, yes. I'm only a casual furry at best myself, but I do like the fandom as a whole, and I do like cute furry creatures in general.

Hey Stardust, glad to see that you are alright. You may remember me as Talset, we had our few online encounters and I enjoyed them well. I initially just wanted to greet you :D But since I am here I could throw in a question.

Have you visited any of the well known Natural Wonders or The Wonders of The World?  :goodluck

Enchanted-Valley96: I do not, although I've known people who have it.

Loire:

Hey!! :wave

Thanks for checking in. It's good to hear from you. I enjoyed our online encounters too.

I take it you're referring to the Seven Wonders? Alas, I have not visited any of them. I've been to some interesting places over the years in my travels, but not those ones specifically.

I have, although it was fairly brief. It was when I went to visit some of my extended family who live in Nova Scotia. They live elsewhere in the province, but my flight came in to Halifax.
