Title: Greetings
Post by: AvestheForumFox on November 18, 2007, 05:39:46 PM
Greetings Sirs (and Ma'ams)
I come from distant lands of the interwebs in sheer interest of what this site has to offer.  I am indeed one of those rare fans who grew up with the original (1988 release)  of TLBT

Honestly, I never really cared much about the sequels, the original was what stole my heart.

But anyway... who the heck am I?

Oh right, let me explain myself...

I am an artist, a writer, I can act if I wanted or maybe even sing, I've coded games before and hosted many web communities, I currently host two webcomics (not so popular) and I'm an illustrator for a film that's currently in the makes... also, I currently live the sad sad life of a low paid factory worker, which is why I often seek pleasurable escapes (ala forums such as these)

I'm a fan of a huge variety of things, whether it be Disney or Don Bluth classics, MST3K (Mystery Science Theater 3000) a huge variety of videogames mainly in the adventure and exploration genre, several novels (Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, J.K. Rowling Steven King and many others!) and a variety of webcomics (anybody ever read Ozy and Millie?)

I'm a collector of artifacts from all over the world, including a small collection of ancient Roman and Greek numismatics (coins) dating in and near the BC era.

and uh.. well.. that's all I can sum up right now...

I could tell you everything, but it'd take a book or two XD

anyway.....
Greetings!  :D

Land Before Time, DUUUUURH!!! :lol And, of course, it's also a place for The Land Before Time fans to gather and commune with one another about anything, really. There's something for everybody! :) I wonder if there are other artifact and coin collectors here, though. I haven't noticed any....

Surely there's another collector around here somewhere.. ancient numismatist are kinda rare unless you know where to look (there's thousands of communities for this hobby) But surely, there are people on these forums who collect things, whether it be world coins, stamps, paintings, etc

I'm actually an ametuer coin collector, not a serious one, though. I do have a mild collection, though. Right now, I'm working towards getting all 50 of the US state quarters.

I like the state quarter trade B) nice designs for each state.

I usually try to collect the old American silver coins, barber dimes, civil war coins, etc the trouble with collecting American currency is that most of the dealers can be a bit rude

I've got a chipped silver dime (my brother has a mint condition one), a lot of interesting quarters, and a lot of dollar values coins (Susian B. Anthony?) and half-dollar value coins, plus some foreign coins.

the Susan B Anthony coins a re pretty common still.. you can exchange a dollar for one at the bank. You could also get as many $2 dollar bills as you want just as long as you have two dollars to spare for one bill

anyway, since you seem interested, i'm working on uploading some pics of my collection

$2 bills are a pretty odd thing. I think once, at McDonald's (of all places), we got shorted $3 of change because we got a $2 bill instead of a $5 bill. :P:

You're collection's pretty big, certainly bigger than mine. I don't have anything "ancient." I think the oldest thing I have dates back to around the 1950s or thereabouts.

Hi and welcome to the Gang of Five! :D  :wow
Sounds like you will definitely bring some great and interesting things to the table here, AvestheForumFox (may I call you Aves?) B)

While I don't have many material collections, I'm always happy to pick up a CD or music score.  The closest thing I have to a "collection" is probably one of:

my digital audio collection (over 25GB and counting) or my Stepmania song collection (3064 songs and counting.  See my signature for details).  Anyway, I look forward to seeing you on the forum! :yes

Indeed, sir,
it tis a pleasure to be here among a good lot of fine individuals.

Music is a good thing to collect, it brings your suroundings to life and takes away the feeling of loneliness (accordingly to what kind you listen to)

I listen to orchestral pieces, mostly sound tracks from major films or videogames. I have a strange taste other than that on what kind of music I seek. I like music that sets a mood.. the original music from the first LBT for example, a hauntingly brilliant piece!

I don't want to drag this topic too far in any particular direction because this is but a generic "welcome" topic.  If you want to discuss the LBT soundtrack, we have a topic for it Here (http://www.gangoffive.net/index.php?topic=1473).

Music in general is set aside in this part of the forum:

I do this, too! :D

I like orchestrated music, which may account for my liking soundtracks such as that of the Star Fox Assault soundtrack.

And, for the rercord, my music collection pales in comparison to action9000's. It's only around 2.5 GB.

EDIT: Ha ha ha, do you think I've "dragged" this thread too much, action9000? :P:

Its a fun and very educational hobby. People who get into the ancient numimatics begin to learn a great deal of history as they collect. One can learn so much from just a single coin.. there are books upon books talking of Ancient Rome, Greece and several other cyvilizations and their currency. You learn about the many emperors, kings and queens..

and to make it even more interesting, when holding these pieces, one cant help but wonder who exactly handled these coins.

there's still a nasty bit of work to be done when it comes to the hobby... coin cleaning...

the coins are sold from lots that were dug up from excavations, or metal detecting.. most come still dirty.. and so, the person who buys them often has to do the dirty work.. that crust is rock hard mind you!

I have a sort of "circle of forums" myself.  This is the one I tend to spend most of my time reading and posting on though. B)  I tend to be pretty casual and this forum has proven to have the most pleasant, friendly atmosphere of any forum I've ever spent time on.  I'm not just saying that because I "work" here, mind you (by the way Petrie, when can I expect a paycheck? :p) :lol I've always been very impressed with this community and it sounds like you'll fit in juuust fine. Welcome with us AvestheForumFox! :yes
I don't have any coin collection that comes close to your really impressive one. I guess the most spectacular piece of my collection is a German 1000 "Reichsmark" bank note of 1910. I don't have anything from so much earlier times. Did you buy all your coins or did you participate in archeological excavations yourself?
Although our shared interest in LBT is what brought us together you will find that many other topics some of which you already mentioned in your introduction are being discussed here as well. Please join our discussions or start threads of your own. I'm sure you will like this place.

I purchase my ancient stuff from the more professional collectors through the brilliant means of the interwebs (ebay, numismatic communities, etc). Since I live in the states and nowhere near Europe, I cant participate in excavations (the only Archeology here in the states revolves around ancient Indian burial sites and those peramids we hear so much about)

You can buy them unclean which is the cheapest way of purchase ($1 to $3 a coin, accordingly to the dealer). To clean them, the most professional way is to soak them in olive oil for several weeks then brush over them with a fine metal brush (be careful not to remove patina or scratch the frail surface) this could take several months of soaking and brushing, and it can prove to be a dirty experience as the crust and oil gets everywhere!

to find a coin in perfect condition can often be a very rare experience, most coins in the unclean lots have little or no attribution (detail) whatsoever, most end up as nothing more than a metal slug. a flat piece of metal with nothing on it.

Most of the coins from the dirty lots are bronze, there's an occasional silver, and since gold never gets crustied or dirty (which is an attribute that makes it very valuable) they're NEVER found in purchased dirty lots. They are instantly plucked from the pile by the person(s) who found them.

You can buy coins that have already been cleaned, though these are the more expensive. (just be careful, there are lots of fakes out there!) Bronze is the cheaper easier coins to get $2 to $20, silver coins can range around $20 to $100 dollars a coin (or more according to its rareness)) gold is the most expensive, ranging from $300 to $10,000 dollars a coin.

there's a huge market for the hobby, and if you can afford it and love to study the history, then by any means I'd encourage you to get into it! But read more about it before you go gun'ho and start buying everything in site... a warning worthy to be taken to heart.

I'm afraid I won't be able to afford a serious pursuit of the hobby of coin collecting in addition to my other hobbies, but it is still intersting what coins can tell about or how they influenced history. Wars were fought with the amount of silver to be included in a nation's coins being on the list of casi belli.
May I ask in which of the states you live?

Let's see what I've got.
  • 1956 United States penny
  • 4 "NO CASH VALUE PARKING TOKENS" from a hospital
  • Bicentennial United States half-dollar
  • 2006 United States nickel commemorating the Louisiana purchase
  • 1964 United States silver dime (slightly chipped in one place on the edge)
  • Bicentennial United States quarter
  • 2005 United States nickel with a picture of a buffalo/bison
  • foreign currency that says "ELIZABETH-II-D-G REG-F-D-2003" on one side and "TEN PENCE" on the other with a "10"
  • 2000 (did they even do any other years on this?) United States gold dollar
  • 1980 United States Susan B. Anthony (I think) dollar
  • 2004 United States nickel commemorating the Lewis and Clark expedition
  • 1985 piece worth $10 Paso's, I believe
  • 2005 United States nickel with the inscription on the back "Ocean in view! O! The joy!
  • another "ELIZABETH" coin worth one penny
  • copper coin with nothing at all on it except scratches and dirt
  • 3 different pennies that have been pressed into eclipses with those machines that you put them in, with various markings
  • a horde of the States collection quarters
Very fascinating. sounds like a fine collection over all ^_^

a good tip for you, if you're looking to ever broaden your collection not by value of the coin, but the interest of designs, go for the cheap grab bags that you'd find at flea markets. Or better, find a local coin store.. they have boxes upon boxes of basic foreign coins 5 for a dollar sometimes! =)

Its a great way to enlarge your collection. I especially love those cheap junk boxes!

All you have to do is set aside one once you get it, preferably when its more or less new. it also helps if you have the coin collection map to put them. Mine, well most of them are as jammed in as I can get them, some have edges sticking out, as long as they don't fall out, I'm happy :D The 99s are the rarest..

I've got a 1944 quarter, which has been worn smooth. 8 Franklin dollars. 3 Susan B Anthonys, 3 Sacagaweas,a bunch of the new presidential dollars, 12 or so Bicentential quarters. a $10 bill from 1950, a couple $2 bills, a penny from 1937, 5 from the 1940s, and 3 nickels from that same era.
