Character Showcase / Re: Useless Sharptooth Showcase - September 2020
« on: September 02, 2020, 11:37:10 PM »
Been rewatching all the sequels (and honestly enjoying them a lot more than I think I ever have), and boy, can't think of a more appropriate nickname for this Sharptooth. For a movie that emphasizes how much of a western hero Doc is, it would have been nice to have an even slightly more threatening Sharptooth. I have to imagine that this Sharptooth is only threatening to the kids because they're, well, kids, and the movie is from their perspective. Come on, guys, even just a little scratch on Littlefoot could have helped. A little.

Even with all that being said, I still love the movie. The whole "the real hero is Grandpa" gets me every friggin' time.

"It's a good thing Sharptooth aren't very smart." No, I think this Sharptooth is just especially special even as sequel Sharpteeth go.

Oh, this is gonna bother me. The fact that what is probably the highest fidelity version of the movie has "incorrect" remasters applied to it, and as much isn't even disclosed in the descriptions of the services it's streaming on. That's my favorite sequel you're screwing with, Universal, don't pull this rewriting history garbage on me.

Never go full George Lucas.

General Land Before Time / Re: Childhood LBT Mix-Ups

Count me also in the Tippy is a girl camp. Man, between the pink, the voice, and the eyelashes, I think it'd be hard not to make that mistake.

General Land Before Time / Re: Youtuber Reviews all 14 sequels

Yeah, some of Jenny's takes are pretty poor in my own opinion. I don't know what on Earth she is talking about with LBT 1 having no themes or lessons, or about the dinosaurs being "ugly" because they have detailed wrinkles and muted colors. Also, VII below XI? Engage me in fisticuffs, Jenny Nicholson.

Also, every time Jenny says "Brontosaurus", I just think of this.

You could make the case for Littlefoot and his species being brontos, as that taxa is now coming back into use among the apatosaurus name, but Doc? Doc is a diplodocus, as his name suggests.

Character Discussion / Re: Wild Arms
« on: May 30, 2020, 11:59:44 PM »
Is Wild Arms a relative of the Rainbowfaces? At least a similiar species?
Well, we know that Wild Arms is a Nothrynchus, a kind of therizinasaur. The Rainbowfaces pretty heavily resemble Ozzy and Strut, with some notable differences, so they're probably some kind of ornithimid. Therefore, both of them are maniraptors, so they're somewhat related, but funny enough, the Yellow Bellies are probably more related to Wild Arms than the Rainbowfaces, seeing as they also appear to be a therizinasaur of some description.

General Land Before Time / Strut or Ozzy?

I'm more of an Ozzy fan. His fascination with eggs is pretty funny and he drives the whole antics between the two.
It's even more funny because Struthiomimus didn't have an egg-exclusive diet. Nor a plant-exclusive diet, for that matter.
I actually really like this aspect of the movie, intentional or not. Struthiomimus' diet was probably not exclusively or even predominantly egg-based, so Ozzy might just have a weird egg cult thing going on here. Strut is trying to eat a perfectly normal diet, but Ozzy's egg fixation won't have that. It's a funny extra angle that only makes Ozzy look like even more of a slimy creep, and I picked him for that.

General Land Before Time / Mistake in movie 12?
« on: January 29, 2018, 03:57:15 PM »
Yeah, that's just some cartoony flair. The more I look at the screenshot, though, the weirder it looks.

Pteranodon was indeed toothless, in fact, its name literally translates to "toothless wing". Interesting little observation, in any case.

General Land Before Time / Utahraptor Poll

I chose Utahraptor because that's what I always assumed post-X fast biters to be, such as Screech and Thud. They're different than the Velociraptor pack from the third film and are bigger.
Bingo. Screech and Thud are huge, same with the fast biters in XI. Even the velociraptors before X are pretty big if we're to believe they are indeed velociraptors. Of this particular list, utahraptor is the only believable option as far as size goes.

Well, about Ruby's relation to egg-stealers. I read somewhere that some species in LBT universe differs from natural, including Petrie, for example. So I think in this case Ruby don't HAVE to eat dinosaurs' eggs when she grows up.
Well, a lot of them very much differ from the natural, I can tell you that right now. Most cases of this would have been very accurate at the time of their creation and were grandfathered in from that era, though, Petrie is a rare exception as pteranodon definitely weren't herbivores and we've known that for a long time. Ruby isn't one of these cases. Her not needing to eat eggs is perfectly natural based on current evidence. Struthiomimus, the only "egg stealer" species we've seen in the franchise, and oviraptor aren't actually very closely related at all, though, they were thought to be part of the same clade at the time of LBT II release, which would explain the confusion.

You know what would make for a fun episode? Daddy Topps mistakes Ruby for a struthiomimus egg stealer type, spreads fear and confusion, and tries to chase her out of the valley. At the end, we learn a valuable lesson about misconceptions, jumping to conclusions, and stereotypes based on appearance. Can't remember if there's already an episode like this with Ruby, but I think it'd be educational at least.

Interestingly, no one mentions that when Ruby is fully grown Oviraptor she will eat eggs, meaning she will be threat to all egglings in the Great Valley. While wondering if Chomper will be able to fight his carnivorous instincts is interesting. What about Ruby?
Well, if you wanted, you could justify this with more up-to-date interpretations in paleontology. Oviraptor diets are still uncertain. They were most likely omnivores, but their primary food source wasn't eggs. (Same goes for Struthiomimus, but we'll just ignore that or regard Ozzy as an exceptional case). Mollusc shells, however, have been found in the same fossil beds as oviraptors, and their beak could easily have been used for cracking open molluscs. Ruby could very well eat shellfish and such, and maybe even show Chomper how to do the same eventually.

Dunno if this has any precedence in-universe, but it would explain why Ruby isn't as big of a concern as Chomper. I'm pretty sure we see her eating both greens and some kind of clam, but I haven't seen the series in a while.

Character Discussion / Guido's name
« on: January 14, 2017, 06:24:10 PM »
"Guido" can be a derogatory term for Italian-Americans, but it's also a well-documented Italian/German name. It's been a name since the 11th century, long before any negative connotation arose and it's still used as a name to this day. I mean, wouldn't it be kinda worse if Guido both had his name and acted out an Italian character type? That could be seen as an actual stereotype, but as it is, it's just the play on a well-established human name. That's all the purpose it needs.

In any case, I don't see the problem. It's an actual name, children aren't likely to notice nor care, and it's not like no other characters have ever been named Guido. Pixar's Cars, Marvel comics, frickin' Samurai Pizza Cats, all of these use the same name for a character. I wouldn't read too much into it.
