The Fridge / Re: 2024 Solar Eclipse
« on: April 14, 2024, 10:30:55 AM »
I had seen the 2017 eclipse by taking a 2 day drive down from Alberta to Idaho with my brothers, which was my first eclipse viewing. It was an incredible experience, and that trip was what got me into photography. After that I knew of the 2020 eclipse in Southern Argentina and the next US one in 2024.

In a way, things happened to line up perfectly for viewing this one. I happened to be on a break from my Mechanical Engineering degree that I started back in 2020, where I'm basically working as an intern for various jobs for a year before going back to finish my 4th year. One of my brothers also happened to be living in Texas and was right on the edge of totality.

The weather on the day of the eclipse was quite sketchy in Texas, with cloud coverage basically stretching across the whole path of totality, so we didn't plan where to go to see it until the morning of the event. Thankfully we found a decent spot on a quiet hill in a small town and had 4 minutes of totality with mostly clear skies.

I currently have my eyes on a possibility of checking out the 2026 eclipse in Iceland and northern Spain, as I will have graduated by then. There's also various eclipses in the 2030s in Australia and New Zealand that I might want to check out, seeing as I will be 54 when the next eclipse passes over North America in 2044, where it will pass over much of Alberta.

LBT Fanart / Re: Fanart Prompt Challenge Discussion

Hey Rainbow  :rainbowwave

Yeah i stopped it for a couple reasons. The first is that there was almost no participation throughout all of 2022, with only a few artists such as Jewels and SRFG keeping it going.

This was also at a time when I was pulling 12 hours a day, 6 days a week away from my house either at school or doing extracurricular stuff, so I didn't feel like it was currently worth the effort with maybe only 1 submission per prompt.

If there's enough interest in it again, it's something that I can possibly bring back. It also doesn't have to be me to do it again if someone else feels like taking on the job.

Feels like there’s a bit of a gap in the LBT generation right now. I wonder if the next wave might actually be the people who’ve been growing up with the series on YouTube Kids…
That's an interesting point, and very well could be possible. It's either that or parents that watched it and now showing their kids. One of my coworkers at a job I worked at last year mentioned that he watched the first 2 LBT movies with his son, though this was for the first time for him as well. He made note of the drop in quality between the two and the amusing fact that there's 14 of them.  :PLoofah

Happy birthday Rhombus! I'm only 33 and already had my mid life crisis of going back to University. Any of degrees that you're interested in getting?  :bestsharptooth

Yeah it can be. I've heard people say it's one of the harder instruments to learn, though I can't confirm this as I haven't played too many others haha.

I've tried playing it recently and can say that it is a skill that can be lost over time. Definitely some rust going on there  :bestsharptooth

(helped a lot with that fanfic that’ll likely never see the light of day whoops).
Hopefully that's the Rhettverse fic you're totally writing right?  :rhett_smile :rhett_grin

Thanks a lot for all the work you did for the prompts and keeping it alive as long as it did SRFG!

IIRC, I think I started this way back but only when you took over this really became a popular thing for a while. I'm glad we had so many entries over the years (a lot less from me than I'd like to admit) but sometimes life if more about the journey than about the results. It's been a great time and we can pick this up any time again if there's enough interest, I guess?  :bronGoodJob

I wonder if the fanfic challenge is going to meet the same fate? Looking at participation last year  :bolt
A big shout out to you as well Ducky for getting the ball rolling with the prompts! When I came back to the GoF back in 2017 I had to pleasure of being able to join in on the 2nd ever prompt, and was a blast to come up with the craziest ideas possible for each one  :bestsharptooth

Yeah I can see how they could maybe feel like a chore. It was never recommended to participate in them for the sake of participating, and moreso a way to help your creativity and expanding your drawing skills by drawing something you might not have thought of drawing before.

Thanks to you as well for all of your entries for both you Jewel and SRFG! Both of you kept it alive in this last final year.

Maybe one day it can make a return and LBT fanart can retake it's rightful spot as best place on the GoF!  :PLoofah

Well done Jewel! Certainly seems like a fit for the prompt (you must excuse me for I have not actually read The Seven Hunters, even though I know how well known it is for being a good fanfic. I just don't really read fanfics to being with haha. I at least got to make these lovely Taunt emotes though  :taunttroll  :tauntclaw )

Is Seeker crying there upon reflection of their choices or is it in response to something else in the story? Well done!

Hey thanks a lot Jewel! I'll take a look at it right away. Sorry for my delay, was enjoying spending time with my family over the holidays.

Speaking about proceeding into the new year, I think we may need to unfortunately stop with the bimonthly fanart prompts. A lot of the previous fanartists have caught up being busy with life, myself included. I've thought about whether I'd participate in prompts in the future and I can't really see myself finding the time to do so within the next couple years and activity in both the fanart section and the GoF in general have been on the low end currently.

Part of my drive to be so active with fanart in the past was to have a second chance at being engaged within the community when I rejoined back in 2017, and I am happy with both the progress I made as an artist during that time as well as the possible influence I had in keeping the fanart section alive and active. I'm not the same person as I once was back then where I felt like I could not reach out and make friends with people both on the forum and in real life. Now after making several friends on the GoF and finding seemingly finding a place within my educational journey, I feel a lot less of a desire to put in the effort, especially with the increased demands of my engineering degree. While I won't say that I'll put down drawing and LBT fanart for good (someone still needs to show the world how great Rhett is  :rhett_grin), but I wouldn't expect anything at the levels that I did in the past.

I would like to end things off with thanking everyone that supported me during the 4 to 5 years that I participated in the fanart side of things, as you guys really did make it a joy to participate in!

Well well, it's already December! Man how time flies! That means we're already half way through the final prompt of the year! How's the prompt coming along Jewel?

Oh hey thanks a lot Jewel! Yeah since I don't keep up with it as much as I used to my topic falls off a bit on the main page and can be harder to find. Glad you liked them though  :rhett_brag :rhett_smile

As for the Ruby x Strut, I just figured I would go with the craziest pairing I could come up with haha.

All good SRFG. Hopefully we'll see something from you this next prompt!

And speaking of the next prompt, I suppose it's about time I get off my butt and officially announce it right?  :bestsharptooth

Nov/Dec: Be Careful What You Wish For: Your wish to the Stone of Cold Fire has been granted, but has some unexpected consequences. Draw a character's corrupted wish!

This is a good one! Who knew the Stone of Cold Fire had Monkey Paw qualities to it?  :PteranoPlotting Hopefully this will be as creative as the writers for LBT deciding on canonizing aliens into a dinosaur franchise  :smucky

Also a good time to give a massive shout-out to SRFG for coming up with all of these very cool prompt ideas for this year! I'm sure everyone knows how lazy I am when coming up with new prompt ideas every year. In fact, I think I've only ever come up with like 2 of them  :PLoofah This might also be a good time to open up the floor for possible ideas for next years prompt list! Feel free to post any ideas  you might have! (Doesn't have to be only relegated to fanartists as well, though they would be given higher preference in the final decision)

Looks like I've missed a decent amount of art from you. I agree with Sneak with possibly just making a new OC for the new design, but maybe because I like the original design you had for Cricket!

A really neat concept for the prompt! That indeed was one of the more interesting episodes and I liked the exchange between Chomper and Thud throughout. Seems like there's honor among sharpteeth in the mysterious beyond after all. Well done!

I played the violin. In grade 12 I was in 2nd violin section in the orchestra, basically the group that usually harmonizes with the 1st violin section that has all the fancy melodies.

Have you ever been abroad?
I have. I went to Cuba back in 2008 as part of a high school music trip as I played in the school orchestra. Basically went around to different music schools and played music and then listened to them play music (they totally kicked our asses haha). In 2012 I went to Mexico with my family, and in 2017 my brothers and I drove down to Idaho for the solar eclipse.

If you had a chance to get one LBT fursuit of any LBT character, who would it be?
Hmmm, I think I would choose.....Loofah  :PLoofah

Have you ever spent an entire day at the West Edmonton Mall?
Never an entire day. The WEM is a tourist trap and when you live in Edmonton you try and find any way to avoid it at all costs. The theater in the mall used to have an animatronic dragon that breathed fire that I luckily got to witness as a kid, though they unfortunately took it down. Here's a video of it:
