Character Showcase / Re: The Land Before Time 14 Showcase - June 2023
« on: June 13, 2023, 04:52:18 PM »
1) I believe JotB was Universal dipping its toes in the water to see how the series would fair after it brought back Jurassic World and see if it was worth reviving, but sadly it just didn't get the response it wanted, and hence I think we have seen the last of LBT, at least for now.

2) I like them both. I relate heavily to Etta's morbid sense of humour and Wild Arms was comedic enough without being put in everyone's faces too much like the yellowbellies were (keeping him in the background with the adults was the best idea I think).

3) Eehh... I would have been fine if there was at least some explanation as to why they were there which is lacking in the movie. "Chomper is here because of the threats in the Mysterious Beyond and Ruby is his caretaker," would have sufficed, just something. I'm not too interested in having a whole film about how they did it; a lot of fanfictions do it well and probably pull it off better than the actual writers would.  :lol

The Fridge / Re: Want to start writing fanfiction
« on: June 13, 2023, 03:14:34 PM »
Okay, I spend most of my free time writing fanfiction, so here's what I've learned over the years:

Firstly, if you haven't already, read other fanfictions (or even books if you're happy to delve outside of your chosen fandom), especially if you're finding you lack ideas. They may provide inspiration.

So you get an idea. Time to expand on it!

What story are you wanting to tell? Who's is/are the main character(s)? Who's the antagonist (if any)? Who is in the supporting cast?

The genre? Is it an adventure, a romance, a horror, a mystery?

Are you planning to follow canon or would you like the characters to explore an alternate universe?

The good thing about fanfiction is that you've already got the setting and the characters, so you can save a lot of time developing characters as your readers are most likely already familiar with them. But you may have to design and develop OCs if you want them in your story.

Once you have the basic idea and characters sorted, write a skeleton plan - the bare bones of the story. What happens in the beginning? What happens at the end? What are the major events throughout the story? You can then add more details as you go!

If you are writing a long fic, write a chapter plan like Ducky said. Think about the aim of each chapter - what is the main event, which characters are involved, and how does it move the story forward?

And finally... Write! Don't worry too much initially about how it sounds or flows - get the main ideas in there and then you can go back and edit the details and proofread later on.

The most important thing is to have fun with your story. The beauty of fanfiction is that it's a hobby. You don't have to worry about writing some literary masterpiece. Write what you want.

Then you decide if you want to publish or not. There are lots of platforms out there to publish fanfictions such as AO3, fanfiction.net or Wattpad. Some fandoms are more active on different sites. Most fandoms I know are more active on AO3. LBT is an exception, being more active on Fanfiction.net.

So.... yeah. Plan, and have fun! There are some great communities out there dedicated to writing fanfiction where you can brainstorm with people, find beta readers (people who will proof read and give constructive criticism) and just chat it all out.

Good luck!  :ChomperPOG

What's this? Oh! OH! OH MY GOODNESS ME!  Littlefoot is finally defeated! :littlefootscared

I KNEW it!  :rhett_brag I had a feeling both Littlefoot's absence in the Mad Song and more focus being on Ducky with just Spike and/or their mother would tip the scales in the swimmer's favour.

What I wasn't expecting, however, was Mr Thicknose taking 4th place, but then I suppose that makes sense with him joining the gang in the second half... and he gets a song.

I wonder if someone else will ever take 1st place?  :thinking

Complete guess as I haven't watched the films for a while, but I think Littlefoot might get knocked off his pedastal in either the 8th or the 12th film. I'm interested to see that Spike has overtaken Petrie a few times, especially considering he has no dialogue like Petrie does.

Quote
Littlefoot's grandparents were just utterly confusing throughout the time I studied their scenes.  This is actually the only film in the series where they have the scientifically correct coloring (based on gender), as these were mysteriously swapped out from the second movie onward.  Their numbers were simply based on assumption after I decided to go with my gut.

It's weird that that the grandparents' voices were swapped for this one, especially as, if I recall correctly, the design sheet for the film does show them as they appear in the sequels. That and when they appear just after Littlefoot's birth, and in the ending scene, the one with the good old female-distinguishing eyelashes is who we see as Grandma in the sequels. It's strange. It's kinda funny how even the first movie got them mixed up.  :lol

Good work on this project, Diddy! There have certainly been a few surprises so far!

LBT Fanart / Re: Fanart Prompt Challenge Discussion
« on: January 14, 2023, 11:00:37 AM »
As sad as it is, I agree with this as well. The activity is no longer there and unfortunately I neither have the time nor the enthusiasm to take part anymore. I had a lot of fun and the fanart prompts helped not only develop my art but other creative ideas too (helped a lot with that fanfic that’ll likely never see the light of day whoops). My free time now is mostly occupied by writing for another fandom I’m interested in and on top of that I’ve just started a new job which will also take up more time. It was fun while it lasted and it was a privilege to take part. I may continue LBT fanart in the future, but we’ll see. The prompts may have been seen as a chore but for me they were a good way to push me into form of creativity I had been straying from for a while.

Yeah, I don't think I'll be able to participate in this one, either. I'm still convinced November was only a week long it went so fast.  :lol I've got a lot of prep to do for my new job and art block has hit me really hard over the last month or so too. Sorry!

General Land Before Time / Re: LBT films you never saw when you were little

I owned most of the movies when I was a kid, but I didn't see:

The Time of the Great Giving
Invasion of the Tinysauruses
The Great Day of the Flyers
The Wisdom of Friends (I owned it but the cover freaked me out too much to watch it :p)

Journey of the Brave didn't come out until I was almost 17 so I don't think that can count.  :lol

I was so last minute this month that I missed the deadline.  :oops

I'll try and finish what I had though. And try and get started on the corrupted wish one early (yes, you can laugh at me). At least for that one, I've had an idea in my head since I came up with it, so no excuse this time.  :lol

Ooh, looks like we ended up with similar ideas for the redemption prompt (although I didn't finish mine whoops)! Very well done as always!

General Land Before Time / Re: Childhood LBT Mix-Ups
« on: October 11, 2022, 04:00:14 PM »
When I watched the first LBT film the first couple of times, I thought Littlefoot's mother wasn't his biological mother. I thought the egg rolled too far away from the longneck in the pond and into a different longneck herd that just took him in. :p

So, I recently downloaded the biggest waste of my time ever, Tiktok, and found a video on there of a person claiming that Littlefoot was adopted because the egg rolled away from the herd. I feel slightly validated.  :lol

The Fridge / Re: What are your favorite sounds, smells and tastes?
« on: October 11, 2022, 03:54:03 PM »
Sounds: I love listening to thunder. I love listening to music, too, especially epic orchestral music like film/video game soundtracks, Two Steps From Hell, the sort of thing that just takes me to another world. My cat's happy little chirp as she walks through the door to greet me.

Smells: Weird one but I love the smell of mushrooms cooking. I suppose because one of my favourite dishes to cook is wild mushroom pasta and the smell during the whole process is just amazing. I also love the smell of lavender, new books, flowers in general, freshly mown grass (even if it does set off my hayfever) and fresh laundry.

Taste: Chocolate. Pizza. Burgers. Cake. All the junk food. :feelsgoodman But also fruit like mango, pineapple, clementines, and blueberries.

The Fridge / Re: Besides LBT, what are your biggest fandoms?
« on: October 11, 2022, 03:41:28 PM »
Harry Potter
Stranger Things
Legend of Zelda
Mario
MCU
Jurassic Park

That's all I can think of right now.  :thinking Still mostly hyperfixated on LBT.

LBT Fanfiction / Re: What do you hate to find in fan fiction?
« on: October 07, 2022, 04:14:19 PM »
I don't read fanfiction that much mostly because I like to read about obscure characters which never get written about. Nah it's actually because fanfic scarred me for life. :bestsharptooth I wouldn't say there's anything I particularly hate (apart from maybe going into excruciating detail regarding certain NSFW topics), but here's a few things that put me off:

- Bad formatting and grammar.  I don't care if it's the best idea in the world, I can't focus through a block of text especially if you don't know what a comma or full stop/period is.

- As Mouse said, humans in non-human fandoms. Saying that I have read and enjoyed sci-fi LBT fics that involve humans.

- Not tagging your fanfics correctly. If I come across something icky that wasn't tagged, I'm gonna... not like you very much.  :p

- Character bashing. Fine if you don't like a character, but dedicating that much time to hating on them through fanfic is something I'll never understand.

- "Oh no! Anyway..." moments. I do get irked if something traumatic happens and the characters just shrug it off as an everyday thing. If a character is established as stoic then okay, but if you know the character will be affected and don't show it, then I'm going to struggle with it.

- Mary Sues. Saying that some Mary Sue fics are very entertaining.

- Making characters extremely OOC for no reason.

- Unfinished fics, especially if they're left on a cliffhanger. I understand authors lose interest or have life things going on though. It's why I now won't upload anything until I'm sure it's going to be finished. So far I haven't finished one of my fics, but then they're all pretty long.
