Timbuktu is a town in Mali, situated on the southern edge of the Sahara desert. It was a major center of trade in salt, gold, ivory and slaves from the 1300s through the 1600s. Exaggerated descriptions of the city by historians have given the city a reputation for being mysterious. Because of this, it is best known in Western culture as an expression for a distant place. Unfortunately, after the capture of the town by Islamist rebels in 2012, several important historic sites in the town were destroyed including several shrines and burial chambers.

We finally got a small amount of rain today and the temperatures did not leave the 80s. The forecast for the next couple of days is absolutely blissful, with temperatures in the mid-70s and modest humidity. The temperatures should creep up back into the 80s next week, but I will willingly take that over the mid 90s that we have been having for the last two weeks. Hopefully, the more moderate temperatures are here to stay.

I am an avid reader of both fiction and non-fiction. One of my hobbies whenever I have significant free time (which isn't very often) is to curl up and read a good novel. So I was wondering, what are some of your favorite novels, short stories, or non-fiction books?
