Attic Treasures / Dune
« on: September 15, 2013, 09:37:29 PM »
I was surprised not to see a topic on this amazing series of novels.  Although I am not a fan of the prequels written by his son, I find that the novels written by Frank Herbert contain some of the best representations of political intrigue, conspiracy, and the eternal conflict between the forces promoting progress and stagnation that I have ever read.  The first novel was certainly an eye-opener for me when I read it during my early teens.

Neither the 1984 film or the SyFy television miniseries did the source material justice, although they are both interesting works in their own right.  In fact, it was the surreal nature of the David Lynch film that inspired me to read the book in the first place.

I was wondering if anyone else was a fan of the novel or its various incarnations in film, television, or video games?

Attic Treasures / Watership Down
« on: September 15, 2013, 09:23:11 PM »
Watership Down is one of my favorite novels.  It was one of the first books that I actually read for enjoyment, as opposed to school obligations, and I credit it with helping turn me into the bookworm that I currently am.  I can reread the novel again and again and come across some nuance that I missed in my previous readings.  In fact, I typically reread it and Dune (another one of my favorites) every year as a kind of summer tradition.

As for the 1978 animated film, I was rather disappointed by the things that they cut out.  I feel that the book provides greater insight into the motivations and actions of the characters than the truncated story provided in the film.  Overall, however, I feel that the film was a pretty good effort at attempting to translate this amazing story into the visual medium.

Frank Herbert's Dune.  I guess I am still in a nostalgic mood.  I am revisiting another old favorite of mine.

The Fridge / Rats get infrared vision
« on: September 15, 2013, 09:09:43 PM »
I remember a news article from a few years back which described a similar procedure for detecting visual light in rats.  I am glad to see that the technology is improving from the rather crude attempts that were being tested a few years ago.  It will be interesting to see how this technology is applied over the next several years.

Petrie in his tryout for the role of Gunnery Sergeant Hartman:

Petrie:  So you're a killer?

Sharptooth:  Sir, yes sir!

Petrie: Then let me see your war face!

Sharptooth: Sir?

Petrie: You got a war face! AAAAAAAAHH! That's a war face, let me see your war face!

Sharptooth: AAAAAAAAHH!

The Party Room / The "Would You Rather" Game!
« on: September 15, 2013, 02:31:36 PM »
I would rather eat something delicious.  My heart rate tends to skyrocket when I am emerged in warm water, which interestingly does not happen when I take warm showers.

Would you rather live during the apex of a civilization or its decline? (Bonus points if you know which film this question comes from.)

Silver Screen / What are you watching?

Cosmos: A Personal Voyage

This television series has been a favorite of mine ever since I was introduced to it during my teenage years.  Despite some of the science no longer being quite up-to-date (which is understandable - it was produced 33 years ago), it remains an excellent primer into the basics of fundamental scientific concepts.  Whenever I am exhausted or worn down (like I am now) I find that this series never ceases to inspire and re-energize me.

Cera knew things were going to get weird when Universal asked David Lynch to direct the next film.

Ducky: Well...

Petrie: Umm...

Wow, I can't believe I haven't read this story until now.   :slap

This is very well written and it is an enjoyable read.  I especially like your characterization of Pterano and his internal struggles with his emotions and the memories of the past.  It humanizes (er.. um... dinosaurizes?) him to a much greater extent that what is typically found in the fanfictions that I have read.  I eagerly await your next installment.  :)

In terms of literary works, do you prefer fiction or non-fiction?  On a related note, what are your favorite books?
