Yes, they let Naraku escape, with no explanation about the giant creature thing that he had created. Probably just as a plot point, to prevent Inuyasha's new shards attack from completely destroying Naraku ..

I don't think you can really compare them to LBt character. Inuyasha does have leadership abilities, but he's very short-tempered. Both Sango and Kagome have to put up with thier boyfriends fooling around with them. Miroku, far more than Inuyasha. Shippo is the only character who could be compared with an LBT character, he has innocence, like Ducky and Petrie.. and fiercely loyal like Cera.
