Episode Discussion / Discuss: Escape from the Mysterious Beyond
« on: March 17, 2007, 07:25:52 PM »
Indications that "Cave of Many Voices" was intended to be the first episode of the series:

1.) The very first opening scene shows us dinosaurs that do not have anything to do with the plot. This is a common plot device (a character foil) that introduces us to the world before the characters are introduced. For example, in Disney's Dinosaur (the movie about Aladar) the opening scene is about a baby Parasolophus, which is then not seen again until the very end of the movie. It's a common trick to open a story with character(s) who are not pertenant, and then to show the important characters. Like the original Land Before time, which showed the small water lizard during the credits.

2.) After the opening scene with the dinosaurs that don't have anythign to do with the show, we are then shown the seven children one at a time as they observe the rain. This is obviously meant to be an introduction to each character, showing us their current family situation and also introduces their personalities.

3.) Ruby mentions Red Claw and the reasons why she and Chomper are in the valley, and also that the adults let them stay there. This is important because it introduces the main villain, and also tells the audience why they are in the valley and are now main characters (since last we knew from the movies, they were not).

4.) This episode focuses on Chomper and Ruby a lot. Ruby saves Ducky's treestars and helps her talk big. Chomper is the one who pushes to find a new cave. This is to be expected, that a first episode would focus on the newest characters.

5.) We are introduced to Red Claw and his fast biters in this episode. Red Claw is not in EVERY episode, but he was in this one. It would make sense that they would show us the main villains in the first episode.

6.) Petire mentions to Chomper the 'stinkly buzzers' which he can eat, which tells viewers right away what Chomper eats in the valley. This is an important question to get out of the way, since viewers would wonder what Chomper eats living here with leaf eaters. (We also see Ruby eating the clam thing earlier, so that answers that question as well.)

7.) This episode is a complete story, and doesn't introduce other sub-characters. There are some episodes that leave questions at the end, such as the one with Ali and Rhette (leaving us to wonder, will they still be here next episode? What will become of them?) Episodes like that one bring in sub-characters. Ali and Rhette, also Saur the Story Speaker, etc. These are characters that are meant to only be in one episode, used as a plot foil. There are no characters like that in "Cave of Many Voices," since it would be too confusing to introduce sub-characters when they are working on introducing their main characters.

Of course, these points woudn't necessarily mean much by themselves, but all together it is obvious that this was intended to be the first episode.

Like I said, as a writer, I can recognize these things. I've graduated college with a degree in writing and I now do freelance editing work and also work in a publishing press. I've had a lot of experience with writing, and plots in general. These are things I can see very obviously. I'm sure it's common sense to other people as well. DarkHouhoumon and I have talked about this episode on AIM and she agrees with my points that these are indications of it being a first episode, meant to introduce the series.

I don't think your order is correct, pokeplayer984. There's some very strong hints in "The Cave of Many Voices" that it is the first episode of the series, yet you have it listed as number 6.

I would bet real money that "Cave of Many Voices" was intended to be episode 1. There are indications in the script that I can recognize as a writer.

Moreover there is no indication of close relationships among Sharptooth relatives in LBT. We have Chomper's family and that's about it. I don't see any of the LBT movies supporting the image of sharptooths' social life (with the exception of Chomper of course) going beyond the innermost family circle.
Ahh, this reminds me of some species of animals which only come together to raise their young, and then split up again when the offspring have grown up and gone on their way.

Interestingly enough, we've never seen a 'pack' of villains in LBT, really. Even raptors, who are usually depicted living in packs (ala Jurassic Park), are only shown in ones or twos in LBT. I think the most sharpteeth we've ever seen at one time is...3? (Correct me if I'm wrong, it's very early in the morning and I'm still half asleep lol)

I suppose this could be because the writers couldn't think of a good story on how the LBT characters could plausibly defeat a very large group of sharpteeth.

Wow, that really does look like him! That's amazing that you didn't use a reference.

You know, I really would love to see a picture of Pterano and adult Petrie. Perhaps in an animated debate/discussion!

LBT Fanart / Bump and Kenta (sketch)

Here are Bump the Onehorn (Monoclonius) and Kenta the Spikeback (Kentrasaurus), characters from my LBT fanfic Follow the Leader (you can see chapter 1 listed here on this thread, but I think it's been bumped to the previous page)

Just a sketch for now, I'll get to ink and color later. It was a lot of fun doing the LBT style, but WEIRD. Like their huge back legs and tiny skiny front legs.    And their toes are annoying... I really like how their faces came out, though.  :D  I'm proud of Bump's expression, like nothing ever really bothers him.  B)

You want to know something I found interesting about this episode? Chomper seems to be able to go into a 'rage.' When he gets upset about the water dripping in his cave he seems to lose all reason and attacks the stalagtites, roaring in rage. Only a fall in the puddle brought him back to his senses, and he seemed dismayed at what he had just done. This really interested me. Perhaps anger triggers a more Sharptooth-like reaction in Chomper (or in other words...maybe he has a temper lol)

Yes, I think JojotheIncredible only wanted them on YouTube because the earlier episodes that action uploaded are gone from Yousendit by now.

I could put them up, I have a 100 mb limit though. Do you think they'll close mt account if I do so? I have some videos from college there and that would be totally uncool.
I wouldn't try it, NewOrder. I've seen accounts closed for uploading illegal things such as these. YouTube is being strict about new shows, new movies, etc. Although I think there are some other places that people don't hear about... much like YouTube, but less popular...hmm...what was it called....aha! Found it!

(This is where I watch Avatar: The Last Airbender episodes since YouTube keeps taking them down and I don't get Nickelodeon...heh heh..)

I never thought Ali meeting Chomper would be a big plot device. But yeah, I had thought the episode where she came back would focus more on her.

You know, Universal could be doing what other TV related companies have done.  Which is show a certian number of episodes first, then show the multi-part origin later in the series.

There are shows that have done this.  One example is the 1989 cartoon, Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers.  This show went through over 50 episodes before showing how the Rescue Rangers got together and what their first case was.

Another one was Freakazoid!, where they didn't show how the hero got his powers until the 6th episode.

Even multiple versions of Batman, Superman and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have done something like this.

For all we know, Universal could be doing the same with LBT.

Anyways, further research has proven this episode to actually be the first to air on TV.

It seems that the first two eps consisted of the following plots: Ep. 1: Finding Chomper a new cave to live in.  Ep. 2: A tooth related plot. (Maybe toothache?)

This info came from a TV Guide website.  I'll get back to you later with the link. :)
Interesting! I have a question. For the series you use as examples, such as Chip n' Dale and Freakazoi, were these explanary episodes done as like a flashback? Some character asks how it all began and then the gang remembers? Or is it just randomly an episode that seems out of order, with no explanation as to why we're suddenly taken back so far in the show's timeline? I would be interested in seeing how they fit a 'backstory' episode in.

Wah, I had a sad Friday with no new LBT episode. I hope it comes soon!  :cry  (Not complaining, just excited for new material!)

(Sharptooth would follow them right into the Great Valley; a point which was more directly expressed in the original cut of LBT).
This caught my attention! Is there indeed more than one cut of the original movie? What are the differences, and when were they made? Going from theater to original VHS, or from the original VHS (which I still have, from the 80's, so I want to check!) to the 20th Anniversary DVD which was released recently?

39
That would be so cool, NoName! I hope it's true! *crosses fingers!*

You're looking at this way to seriously, the producers don't care about scientific accuracy, and even if they did, Ali's herd has always welcomed new comers, so there probably isn't much inbred.
LOL. I agree, you're putting WAY too much thought into this. The show creators wouldn't care about any of that, they're just making a kid's show and we all know about the inaccuracies of LBT.

I think you're reading too much into the French thing too. Just because Rhette is a French spelling doesn't mean they're trying to make some slander to French people because of his character! Is Shorty a slander to short people?

Chiiiilllllllll out.  B)
