Sound Off! / Ducky's music features
« on: February 20, 2017, 01:18:48 PM »
In this thread, you will see more or less regular music features from me now. I just love to discover new music and, seeing some people do it on DeviantArt recently, I just felt like setting a similar thing up both here and on there with the hope that others might enjoy discovering the music that I love listening to :)

There won't be a schedule but I'll probably try to group music from a similar genre (or feature a single artist too, possibly). I'm trying to do at least 1-2 per month.

Expect the first feature later today as I'm just listening to the videos again :p

PS: If you want to do a similar feature, you are more than welcome to use my thread too :yes Discussion about the featured music itself is welcomed as well of course ^^spike

General Land Before Time / What if Shorty was part of the LBT 14 cast?
« on: February 16, 2017, 08:12:37 PM »
Shorty wasn't part of the cast of LBT 14 but what if he was? What role would he play? Here are a few ideas of mine:

1. Shorty would have replaced the role Wild Arms was playing, informing the Great Valley of the incident (however I think he'd rather urge them on to do something to help Bron out of there and join Littlefoot later on)

2. Shorty would try to rescue Bron on his own (but fails) and, on his way to the Great Valley to get help, he stumbles upon the Gang or at least part of them

3. something completely else or something inbetween? What are your thoughts?

Gamers Zone / Civilization 4/5 Multiplayer games?
« on: January 16, 2017, 06:07:14 PM »
Hi guys, a few of us here (namely Malte279, rhombus and vonboy as well as yours truly) have been playing Civ 4 online for a long time already and it was tons of fun each time we did! Now I do know that some more of our members here have civ 4 and/or 5 installed on their systems so I really wonder if there is interest for more players to join these games?

Since it is quite unlikely to get many players from all around the world to play at the same time, it will be difficult to arrange such a game but, luckily, the games offer options for that as well if necessary which I will explain once I know how many people may be interested in such a GoF game of Civ (with a bit of dedication, we could even have some fun playing as if we were LBT characters, writings stories from their perspective as we play the game, but that's just a funny idea of mine... or make our own LBT mod. It's easy to mod these games, even I can make some changes and I know absolutely nothing about modding :p)

Either way, I would be very happy if there were more players to have fun playing those games with in the future :yes

EDIT: Darn it! I think I made this poll multiple choice by accident  :bang

LBT Fanfiction / If We Hold On Together
« on: January 07, 2017, 06:22:10 PM »
*entry for fanfiction challenge 2017/1

Well, titles are a bitch so this one comes without one until I (or you?) find a title that suits the story well. Right now, any title would spoil the whole story anyway so let's get started right away, shall we? Chapters will be rather short so I thought I'd better start posting them early  :p

*****

Prologue:

–Petrie is never going to find me in here, oh no no no!” Cowering inside of a rotten log which was partly submerged in the water of one of the Great Valley’s many watering holes, sat a young Swimmer girl, wearing a look of happy anticipation, knowing that her friend would never discover her hideout - a game of Hide and Seek was on the schedule today! As always, she and her friends had agreed upon a certain area of their wonderful home - the Great Valley, as the area where the hiders may hide from the seeker. Right now, that was her friend, Petrie – a Flyer. Her other friends Littlefoot the Longneck, Cera the Threehorn as well as her adopted brother Spike the Spiketail were hiding somewhere nearby but Ducky, the Swimmer, only knew where her brother Spike was hiding. He had a tendency to stay close to his sister in these games and the reputation of being a very bad hider after all, hiding in a field of tall grass that was growing at the shore of the watering hole. But that wasn’t all that important to know for the young swimmer as far as she was concerned. After all, in the end, all that mattered was that she was the last to be discovered or, even better so, not to be discovered at all. Water was her element, frankly, so she felt safest when hiding close to it.

Technically, if she heard Petrie approaching and about to find her, Ducky could just retreat into the water to remain hidden, however the rules of the game required her to stay at whatever place she had decided to use as a hideout. Winning was important and it arguably increased the fun of a game but it wasn’t worth the trouble if her cheat was discovered, therefore, she would not do such a thing.

As the minutes slowly dragged on, Ducky once again had to admit that Hide and Seek could be one of the most boring games sometimes since there was literally nothing to do other than waiting to be discovered or called out. All she could do was to stay put and observe the area around her… and wait.

It didn’t take long until a distant argument between two very familiar voices reached the young girl’s ears.

–Hmm, it sure sounds like Cera and Littlefoot have been finded-ed, yep yep yep!” Ducky mused. That was certainly good news for her either way. After all, she wouldn’t be the first to be caught and therefore not appointed as the next seeker. Besides, it meant Petrie would hopefully soon look for her and Spike. –And since Spike is hiding poorly…“  Indeed, the Spiketail had made a very obvious mistake… since he had trampled some of the tall grass he was hiding in, creating a visible trail that Petrie, surely, would be more likely to discover than her old, rotten log.

However, it never came to that…

*****

juuuuuuuuuuust a short, totally random prologue to distract you until shit really kicks off ^^spike This won't be a happy-go-lucky story but a story with a happy start is more... inviting? Anyway, since these chapters will probably stay in the 1000-2000 words range (no promises though), updates may be more frequent. If I want to finish this in time, it'll have to be that way anyway!

So uhh... thoughts?  :lol (Or guesses what it'll be about? ^^spike)

Computer and Electronics / Help needed with image merging
« on: January 06, 2017, 12:44:17 AM »
I was trying to edit the new award banners I got into my signature only to encounter a board message because my signature will have too many pictures.

I have more images in my signature now than I'm allowed to and I therefore need to merge them into one image using some sort of program. I know Malte has done it but he's pretty much vanished. Anybody got some advice how to do it? I've tried paint but it only did weird stuff but not what I wanted...

LBT Fanart / Fanart Prompt Challenge Discussion
« on: January 03, 2017, 06:36:04 PM »
Hi guys,

I really like rhombus' idea of a somewhat continuous creative challenge to keep the GoF's creative masterminds busy so, in cooperation with him, I will host a fanart version of his fanart challenge, yep, yep, yep! The challenge will be purely for fun and aims at improving your art skills - whether beginner or pro, it doesn't matter :)

But I won't be hosting this alone. RockingScorpion is going to assist me :yes

Well, let's talk facts:

1. There will be a prompt every 2 months for the time being. I have this feeling that one prompt per month might be a bit too stressful for some but if it turns out to be too slow, we can always pick up speed.

The prompt can be a word, a name or a short sentence. Maybe even a quote? Examples could be
... word: Friendship
... name: Mr. Thicknose
... short sentence: The gang is in danger.
... etc.

At any case, there will be a few words to explain the prompt and to give some guidance :)

2. Anybody can participate! The only requirement is, that the artwork is uploaded here on the GoF. Besides, you will need to specify that the drawing was made specially for this contest in the Author's Note of your artwork (no using old artworks! ^^spike). Also, while only one artwork may be entered for voting, we encourage to create more entries if you have more than one idea. In such a case, you will have to state, which one to be voted for though.

3. As far as art mediums go, anything goes. From clay figure to pencil n' paper, from paper folding to digital or a good ol' watercolour painting and anything inbetween :)

4. It would be great if you let us know that you are planning to contribute your artwork so we can determine if we're still expecting more entries or not.

5. Once you've finished your entry, please PM me with a link to the artwork. Please do not use this thread for that. The links to the finished entries will be collected in the masterlist thread

6. After the end of each challenge, participants may vote for the best entry based on creativity and quality (creativity should be more important though :)). Voting will be held in the voting thread . Of course, voting for yourself is a big nope, nope, nope :smile
The prize for winning will be the permanent feature in the masterlist thread as well as the privilege to come up with the next prompt (if you don't want/don't know what to choose, Rockingscorpion and I will take the turn instead)

We really hope this will help some of you artists out there to improve and have fun expanding your horizon... and I hope it goes better than my last contest :angel

If you have questions concerning the contest in general, the voting, the prompt or just anything, this is the place to ask us, yep, yep, yep :)

I will post the first prompt RockingScorpion and I agreed upon shortly. It will always be posted in the masterlist thread however it will also be mentioned here.

General Land Before Time / Lessons from LBT 14
« on: November 16, 2016, 07:05:40 AM »
I will not discuss in detail what flaws Journey of the Brave has but there are many things that Universal could/should consider doing if they wanna continue the series (which we all hope is going to happen!)

A few good arguments have been uttered over in this thread
  • The series has to take a different direction.

Let's be honest, LBT 13 already made me feel they were slowly running out of good ideas for more kid-friendly LBT movies, where the gang is the same as ever. As Weird Raptor pointed out in the other thread, they could
    Quote
start expanding beyond the original gang of five and create new main characters.
That'd give them a huge pool of possible stories to take inspiration from. New (main)characters, other settings etc. or prequels, telling things like the story of Littlefoot's (grand)parents, Chomper during his exile from the gang, Ruby and Chomper meeting, some more backstory on Shorty/Ali etc etc... You see, they surely wouldn't run out of ideas if they think about the plotholes of the series alone ;)

Another aspect that would also take this "new direction" route is "Next generation" (or at least the gang being older). I think there are plenty options for this one, it's just a matter of personal taste to see the gang we grew up with as adults, possibly with children of their own or just going on epic grown-up adventures :p . I wouldn't mind as long as the series keeps growing (with good and enjoyable content, that is)

  • The series must return to the feels of the earlier movies

This is one aspect I can't agree more with. Many children in the 90's grew up with TLBT. I regularly receive comments on DeviantArt from users who thank me for reminding them of these great times through my fanart of the series. All of these people are a major target group (not to mention their children) but you won't keep them entertained with silly characters, a plot with more holes than plot and no exciting and thrilling villains, fights and obstacles. The first movie gave us all of that in abundance!
Adding a few of my own ideas now...
  • Listening to fans/working together with us

I know this sounds crazy when you read this at first but think about it... I don't think there can be any better critique/review than one out of the mind of a true LBT fan who truly loves the series! So why shouldn't we be allowed to help Universal come up with good stories, characters etc. and support them as they animate the movies? There are many issues of course that would have to be cleared first (like... if we'd be rewarded in some way... or logistical issues if they needed us at their studios) but I feel like this is one possible approach how to make the series great again...

Moreover, some fanfiction authors have written epic tales which, if they were original stories, would probably sell really well as novels... and they would also be a really good basis for new movies /tv-series... possibly directed at older audiences purely (rhombus' "The Seven Hunters" come to my mind... you can't let a young kid watch a series based on that!  :p)

  • Fill plotholes instead o creating them!

Well, as already mentioned earlier in my post, we could probably go up to LBT 20 or even further with movies filling the most obvious plotholes of the series (ty-series not included!) without problem... think about previous movies and reference them properly. It can't be that hard. Fanfiction authors can do it with no problems and they don't get paid a fuck :bang

  • If there's a secondary character who would fit into the concept of a future movie, use them instead of making new ones!

Well, this is mostly directed at LBT 14. I'm sure you all know which characters I'm talking about... if not...

Why didn't Shorty return when Bron did? What did we do to deserve something like Wild Arms instead of Shorty?! Ridiculous!

    and last but not least...

  • better animation...

I don't really like the animation style of LBT 13 onwards... some people say it's improved... I just think it doesn't look true to the older sequels. The character designs even in LBT 14 sometimes just don't look good, sorry :neutral

What I would like to see here is a step back to the time of... say... LBT 7-9. The animation style was a good compromise between the advantages of traditional and digital animation in my opinion. From LBT 10 onward, the digital part took over with every new sequel (LBT 12 being an exception due to the amazing backgrounds and landscapes it had imo). This point is purely personal preferance though...
You guys can come up with any more?

Silver Screen / Finding Dory
« on: November 11, 2016, 05:11:48 PM »
I've just finally seen the movie since it was finally released over here in Germany  :p

What were your thoughts on it?

I think it's a very good sequel to Finding Nemo, staying true to that masterpiece of a movie in both animation style (well, add 3D) and atmosphere. The characters that reappeared were perfectly acting like themselves (no butchered characters there) and the new characters are pretty interesting too. It was quite a cool adventure and I just love how Dory remembers bits and pieces until these bits and pieces finally fit together. Oh... and she's too cute for for own good as a baby fishy  :lol

LBT Fanfiction / TLBT Fanfiction series
« on: October 31, 2016, 07:33:50 PM »
Hey guys, so here's the promised fanfiction that I was going to start. After some part of my main fanfiction (Shorty's Dark Past) kinda turned into a "story within a story", I decided to make a whole new fanfiction (series) about it.

So what kind of story is expecting you? Very basically, I'm rewriting the first movie (possibly even more of them at a later point), adding a bit of originality here and there of course. There will be additional scenes which happen inbetween the scenes, that we all love so much, or during the time that the movie doesn't show us due to time restrictments (or those little buggers cutting those scenes :p) and just, generally, I will always try to improve the logic in some scenes, change dialogues etc. So this won't be a boring copy of LBT 1, don't you worry ;)

Littlefoot was telling Bron the story of how he lost his mother, found his friends and reached the Great Valley together in "SDP". I'll need to add those scenes of the first movie which weren't relevant to that story (aka. the first few minutes of it which is why I haven't started posting yet  :bang ).

Due to the Fanfiction Awards taking place now, I will try to get as much of it published as I can during the time of voting (the timing is a bit bad, I admit :p). You can probably expect at least two chapters per week since I've got quite a bit of the stuff in the middle already written due to it being originally written for "Shorty's Dark Past"

So... yeah. I hope you will enjoy this new story/concept and I hope I will not fall behind on posting chapters (like i usually do  :rolleyes ). Expect the first chapter either tomorrow or on Wednesday :)

Sound Off! / 440 Hertz vs 432 Hertz discussion
« on: August 30, 2016, 07:54:04 PM »
Heya! So I've been listening to remixes of my favourite composer and then I stumbled about these 432 Hz videos on YouTube and got curious because, to me, there wasn't any difference that I could distinctly notice until I did some research... and now I'm super curious what's everybody's take on this debate in music that has been going on for quite a while now, apparently.

I'll just share the article with you guys, read it yourself it has all the major information you need to know about this subject here's the article
here's the article

And for those lazy ones, here's a very rudimentary summary of what I just learned about this:
- There's a standardised tune for music so everybody knows what a certain key on an instrument has to sound like (if the instrument has to be tuned like a piano, violin, guitar etc.) which is 440Hz for the "A(4)" key
(Hertz is a unit to describe how many waves of sound you hear per second. 440 Hz means 440 sound waves per second)
-ancient cultures like the Greek or the Egyptians are reported to have been using a different "tune" than we do nowadays. At 432 Hz, it is reportedly sounding more harmonical (according to the claims made in that article) and there's even supposed to be mathematical proof (even wavenumbers throughout all keys as opposed to uneven numbers in the 440 Hz music). Some people say 432 Hz tuned music can have meditative qualities and a bunch of other ways to influence you. Heck, there are even conspiracy theories as for why 440 Hz turned out to be chosen as the standard tune instead of 432 Hz!

Well, now you'll probably want to hear the actual difference, here are some videos and other interesting stuff I found
link 1 & link 2 videos of people comparing both tunes... test yourself ;)
or play around with this tool here ^^spike

As far as I can tell, my preferred tune is 432 Hz. If you listen to songs in standard 440 Hz and then listen to 432 Hz versions that you'll more than likely discover on YouTube you can probably make up your mind the easiest.

PS: Just before I post this, just found another article with a lot of... interesting video links and a lot more science and maths behind this, but it's a bit of an read :DD here you go!
here you go!

Computer and Electronics / Google Docs vs. MS Word
« on: August 23, 2016, 09:54:27 AM »
So since my new laptop apparently only has a version of MS Word preinstalled that's only gonna work until the end of the week (since it's apparently just a trial version), I'm currently testing Google Docs as an alternative and so far I'm rather happy with it. Aside from a few little "luxury problems" that I'm having with it (a.k.a. little nitpicks like not being able to copy and paste using your mouse/touchpad only), I've actually only noticed advantages of Google Docs that MS Word can't offer me (as far as I'm aware, that is)

So what I'm asking you is: Which program are you using when there's something to type on the computer (whether that be work-related or literature) and how does it compare to MS Word respectively Google Docs (or both if you're using something completely different)? Which positive things are there to mention and which flaws to point at?

LBT Fanfiction / New Big LBT Contest
« on: August 18, 2016, 12:20:16 AM »
Well, I've been meaning to hold another contest for a while so here it is, hosted simultaneously on DeviantArt so I don't end up with just two entries again like the last time ^^spike
So without further ado, here's everything you need to know:

Theme + purpose:

The theme of this contest will be The Land Before Time (obviously) ;) I would like to encourage and inspire you to create original fanart about these wonderful movies because there are so many good artists on this site but very few actually draw fanart :( There are so many people telling me on DeviantArt how much they loved these movies as a child and some even thank me for waking these memories in them with my art. That's one of my aims of this contest. The other aim is challenging yourself and expanding your horizon, coming up with original ideas etc. :) And bringing some life to the Fanart subforum on here of course!

General information:

This contest will be a contest with a 8 smaller rounds and one final big round. Each round will have a special theme, which is announced on the day the round starts, and each round will have a winner, however there will also be an overall winner who will be determined once all rounds have been completed :yes

-Small rounds will last for two weeks each. Then a new round starts, however you may submit your artwork up to one week later. (EDIT: Nevermind, the deadline will be dropped :p) Smaller rounds do not require fully coloured artworks with backgrounds. It should be a little more than just a sketch though ;)

-The final round will last for 4 weeks and it will require a coloured submission. A background is still optional but I recommend including one :)

BTW: It is not obligatory to participate in all rounds, however you may be less likely to win the overall prize.

How to enter:

Pretty obvious too, just join ^^spike Would be cool if you mention that you're going to participate too, yep, yep, yep!

Rules:

-Well, pretty obvious I think but keep it Land before Time only. So no crossover entries please.
-OC's are allowed.
-only one entry per round. If you have more than one idea, you may draw more than one but, finally, only one submission will count for fairness' sake :)
-the artworks have to be created sorely for this contest so no old works ;)
-any medium goes, from watercolours to digital to pixel art or whatever medium there is out there. To those of you who can't draw a stick figure: Yes, you may also submit literature. Due to the rather limited time for each round, I suggest to write one-shots or only short fanfictions so you're able to finish in time. Some mediums obviously do not match the requirements i mentioned above so if you use one of those mediums, tell me and I will tell you a requirement that works for your medium as well (e.g. minimum word count, if you make a literature entry)

Judging:

The winner will be determined by me. I will take into consideration both quality and originality of the artworks. That way I would like you to try your best, even if you're not the most talented artist on this planet :)
Judging will be done after all rounds have ended. If you don't want/can't enter but still want to support me, I would accept additional judges too :)

The overall winner will be determined by a poll, where all participants have a vote (may not vote for yourself though ^^). Second and third place will get a small prize too :)

Prizes:

Ain't a contest without something to win, right? ^^

Small rounds: a request by me (max. size A4, max. amount of characters 3, coloured or unlimited amount of characters but lineart only)
final round + overall winner: A big request (or two of the smaller requests mentioned above). That means A3 paper, unlimited amount of characters and fully coloured (unless you have other wishes of course). While I would love to offer a background too, I'm afraid I really suck at them so please don't request bg ^^ If you do, at your own risk :D

The requests needn't be LBT-related, however I would prefer that :D A full list of what I will/can draw will be posted when the time has come to pick winners.

If less than 10 people participate, every participant will get a request :)

PS: If you don't participate but would like to offer prices too, you're welcome to do so :)

When will it start?:

The first round is scheduled to start on September 1st.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

If you have questions, feel free to ask. It would be nice if you could let me know in case you participate. :yes

By the way, I will prticipate myself, just out of ranking, obviously ;)

Silver Screen / The Secret Life Of Pets
« on: August 09, 2016, 05:52:17 PM »
So, I've gone to the theatre today to see this movie. Any thoughts?

« on: August 08, 2016, 04:15:47 AM »
Hey guys, I suppose you've all been wondering why I suddenly disappeared without a word? Well, I've returned now :)

The reason for my long absense was a mixture of exams killing my free time (hence I also quit Skype for a while -->Huge distraction!) and some trouble with the administrative team of the forum that hopefully won't be a problem anymore now that I've taken a break from things to let things cool down.

Been missing the place, I'll soon catch up on things... shouldn't take too long  ^^spike

PS: Since a few keys of my keyboard on my laptop are malfunctioning, I may still be a bit silent but I'm going to get an external one asap so I don't have to use my phone or our family's computer anymore ^^
