The Fridge / Re: 2024 Solar Eclipse

I am driving up to northern New York either Saturday or Sunday to see the eclipse.

I have the filters, a tripod and an SD card to capture the pictures.

"It is still a good idea to keep tabs on the local sentiment. Even if it is from a...less than trustworthy source," Captain Carson replied, looking at the newspaper. At the mention of being restricted to Hogwarts, the woman nodded.

"Field trips can be used to get around that restriction but I highly suspect too many field trips would arouse suspicion," she added.

When Stripetail mentioned Pinkstone's group she nodded. "I don't agree with taking sides in this war either, Commander," Captain Carson replied. "But with Chong's head start, we will need local help. The other alternative is let the Pinkstone insurgents cause havoc to occupy Prime Minister Fudge and the authorities and then we can hunt for Chong while they're putting out the — likely literal — fires that the insurgents have started."

As she finished the conversation, the door opened and Professor Snape walked in. Her heart flew to her throat as she wrapped her hand around her wand. But the moment the man spoke, she began to calm down. She looked at Stripetail and followed him and Professor Snape to Professor Dumbledore's office.

"Could you please wait a moment?" Kire said to the group he was accompanying. He then turned to Chryseis. "I'll need some purification powder."

"Certainly." Several blue pouches materialized out of thin air around the Dryad. Kire handed her some silver coins as payment. He then tucked the pouches into a pocket in his armor.

"All right," he said, turning the rest of the group. "If you'll touch that pylon, you be able to warp to any other pylon in the world. They're all labeled; we'll be heading to the forest pylon."

---------------------

The banquet hall had some simple drinks and small snacks like fruit juice, hot tea and bread.

"All right," Deimos said, looking over the group. "Stripetail has ordered us to learn more about Chong's mining operation. And disrupt it if possible."

Mr. Bigmouth spoke up. "We have very limited resources with us," he said. "It's likely we'll have to look for local assistance."

"Good point." He then looked around. "Any other comments or concerns?"

Captain Carson closed the door and took a seat. "I admit that this places us in a very precarious situation," she said. "While any help against Chong is appreciated, I have grave concerns about what they will ask in turn. As the Pinkstone groups are known to be violent, there is a high likelihood that they will ask that we attack a Ministry of Magic held asset or at the very least, provide them with materiel. For obvious reasons, I do not wish to get myself or my crew involved in an insurgency.

"However, if we decline their help, it's extremely unlikely they will target us. But then that leaves us with the problem of the Ministry of Magic and Prime Minister Fudge. We already know that they are extremely hostile to Muggles who witness magic and Magicfolk who perform magic in front of Muggles.

"As we all know, Chong is best countered with a combination of magic and technology, which is anathema to the current Pottermore government. If we continue on our current methods of pursuing Chong, it is almost certain that we will likely be spending the majority of the time reversing Memory Charms and otherwise cleaning up after government meddling with our efforts; obviously, this will help Chong." Captain Carson then sighed and rubbed the bridge of her nose.

"Thankfully, it's very unlikely for Chong to get support from the Pottermore government; indeed, he may already have run afoul of them. But the third option is that we restrict the pursuit of Chong to using magical methods. While this avoids issues with the Pottermore government, we would be greatly handicapping ourselves. Which is something we can ill-afford due to his massive head start."

Captain Carson then held a hand to her forehead and sighed. "And unfortunately, as unpleasant as it sounds, we're going to have to ally with the Pinkstone insurgents. We need all the help we can get to stop Chong and we can't spend our time cleaning up after government meddling. That and if we do 'clean up' after them, they'll likely see us as enemies anyways. That said, I'd prefer that we restrict the aid to them in the form of valuables and gems that can be traded for money or materiel and not be linked to us. That way, we can get the support of the Pinkstone insurgents and not have the Pottermore government after us. At least for a bit. We'll probably have to 'clean up' after their meddling and once word of that gets out, they'll be against us."

"Furthermore, there is this." She then took a copy of The Daily Prophet out of a pocket of her robe and placed it on the table. The headline blared from the front page: "Obliviations Up. Visiting Wizards To Blame?" The picture underneath the headline was a grainy moving image of Chong.

Derek Powers scowled. He clenched his fists as he felt his temperature rising. Even with the enhanced synthetic skin and clothing he wore, the radiation could still burn them away and it simply wouldn't do to reveal himself as Blight. He took a breath to calm down.

"Commissioner," he said calmly. "Are you forgetting that Wayne-Powers Enterprises has more in assets and turns a greater yearly profit than some countries? Good day." He then hung up the phone.

Of course, with how big the news of Paxton's arrest was, his face was soon plastered all over the airwaves.

And unsurprisingly, the Village where Stripetail and the athletes were staying had televisions.

Gabriel had sent another two Weasel team to break Blammo out of jail. This time, she told them to be more discreet.

And discreet they were. They were dressed as repair personnel and escorted by two police officers as they walked down the hallways of the cellblock. Already, they were formulating the plan to incapacitate the two officers with them.

Captain Carson had been informed of the meeting by Tarrax. As it was, she was in the middle of putting the finishing touches on tomorrow's lesson plan. It was nothing major, just a simple ambient magic converter. While large ones could provide as much power as trailer-towed generator unit, the small one that the students were making had roughly the same output as a battery, being enough to power a small light bulb.

Putting the materials aside, she followed Tarrax to Stripetail's classroom and knocked on the door.

"Lord Stripetail," she said. "It is Captain Carson. I have for the meeting."

"I hope you have enough money to cover everything after my lawyers get through with you," Paxton replied as he was handcuffed and marched out of the apartment.

With Paxton out of the way, the officers began searching the apartment. Unsurprisingly, the search warrant also included all of the other artifacts and artwork he liked to collect as well as paperwork. Soon, boxes of various evidence began piling up as the officers stood guard. Of course, with the presence of officers, there were soon spectators watching as the police began removing evidence.

One of the officers wondered how soon it would take for the press to show up, get in the way and have Paxton's face and this bust plastered all over the media.

The interior of the giant mahagony tree was hollow and ringed with stairs that looked like they were part of the tree itself. Hanging lights that looked like fruits dangled from the stairs.

Of course since the tree was pretty much vertical and there was a hollow shaft in the middle, Kire simply chose to fly up to the top of tree instead of taking the stairs. Thanks to his high flight speed, he reached the top landing in only a few seconds. He then walked up the last staircase and found himself inside a sizable room. The floor of the room was grass and lighting was provided by several of the same wooden lights that lit up the stairwell. Flowers and shrubs grew out of the grass. A shimmer dark green crystal floating above a plinth made of  a variety of lush plants was the centerpiece of the room.

"Ah, Kire, what brings you here?"

Kire turned to see the speaker, a young woman dressed in nothing but some leaves and vines. "We just arrived in the jungle after an underground expedition, Chryseis," he replied.

The letter that Stripetail had received had its wax seal still intact by the time Stripetail opened and read it.

Quote
I had received a note from what appears to be a Pinkstone aligned operative at around lunchtime. As my lessons were done for the day, I took a group of volunteers to the location mentioned in the note. Upon entering the location, I encountered what seems to be a cell of anti-Ministry insurgents calling themselves the "Society for the Abolishment of the Statute of Secrecy". They offered to assist us in capturing Chong but they also stated that we would need to reciprocate. I would like to discuss this turn of events with our group further. However, due to the sensitive nature of this discussion, this must occur in person."

Captain Carson made her way to the owlery and tied the letter to one of the school owls. She told the owl to give it to Stripetail and to not let anyone else take it. She sighed; this was a very insecure manner to send a letter but her usual encrypted messaging systems were not available. Hopefully, the owls could avoid anyone trying to intercept the letters.

The message delivered, she exited the owlery and returned to the Ravenclaw common area to determine the next lesson plan. She had already covered history of Muggle wandmaking and wand materials.

Kire landed in front of the enormous tree. Aside from its sheer size, there was nothing odd about the tree, save for a door at the base of the tree. The solar knight opened the door. "After you," he said, allowing his traveling companions to enter first.

Mr. Bigmouth pulled the sled into town and parked it near the Daybloom Inn.

Deimos then spoke up. "Looks like we got a new mission from The Seer himself," he said, putting his radio away.

"What is it?"

Deimos pointed a clawed finger to the inn. "Well discuss it in the banquet hall." He the entered the inn.

Mr. Bigmouth then pulled the repulsorsled onto a very worn dirt road and followed it.

As Kire was flying, he held out a tome in his hand and soon, several shimmering discs of water flew out of them and made a beeline towards the derplings. The discs ripped into the derplings and quickly reduced them to bits of meat. Had Ratchet, Angela, Sasha and Rivet seen Amaria in action at the Dreadzone, they would have recognized the spell as razorblade typhoon.

Thankfully, once they had gained altitude, the derplings could no longer reach them.

Captain Carson was back inside the Ravenclaw commons room. She was using a self-writing quill to write a letter to Stripetail regarding her encounter with the anti-Pinkstone cell she had encountered. As the information was sensitive, she had hung up some curtains around the desk set in a corner of the room to prevent eavesdroppers.

Once that was done, she sealed it with a drop of hot wax and moved aside the curtains. She then headed out of the common room and up to the owlery to have the message delivered to Stripetail.

Captain Carson scowled. She was absolutely not interested in getting her crew involved in an insurgency. "I will need to speak to my superior about this," she said.

The grey bearded wizard nodded. "I see. Do keep what we said in mind earlier. You may no longer have the luxury of ignoring Fudge and the day that comes is getting closer. Already, he's turned Esbenshire into a virtual police state and our sources say that his Aurors are casting Memory Charms on the Muggle residents with wild abandon."

The wizard then nodded. "Now then, I recommend you return to your classes. The message to the next meeting will be delivered by House Elf. Good day."

Captain Carson nodded as she motioned to the rest of the others and she made her way up to the winding staircase. Eventually, the billywig statute moved aside and she exited with her group.

"We need to go back to the town and alert the rest of your group," Kire said. "There should be a pylon somewhere that links to a teleportation system that lets me travel to all the various biomes." He looked around. All he could see were swampy environs of the jungle long with the towering trees and vines. He the narrowed his eyes as he saw a mahogany tree off in the distance that towered above the others. "There!" he said. "That's where the pylon's located."

He then heard an odd mix of a chirp and buzz and saw what looked to be enormous, two-legged blue beetles approaching. "Derplings! Go! Go! Go!" The wings emerged from his armor as he rocketed into the sky at speeds that seemed only attainable by aircraft.

Paxton Powers was currently inside his apartment. He pondered what other antiquities his dealers could get. His contacts had informed him that the group who had arrived for the games in Neo Gotham had some one-of-a-kind and valuable artworks and artifacts. He smiled; perhaps some money could induce them to part with their goods. After all, everyone has their price.

He was interrupted by a knock on his door and a shout of "Police! Open this door!". The man looked at the camera feed. He saw that the group of people at his door were indeed officers from the Gotham City Police Department.

He swore under his breath as he approached his apartment's front door. He then opened the door. "Officers, as I said before. Come back with a—"

"Warrant?" One of the officers held up the piece of paper.  "We have authorization to search your apartment. We also need to take your antiquities as well as all records of your acquisitions to determine if they were legally acquired. Now if you'll step outside."

"You'll be hearing from my lawyers about this," Paxton replied as he was led out of the apartment.

Kire alighted onto a small cliff in the vertical shaft. He then looked upwards and saw a faint pinprick of light. "Angela, Sasha, Rivet!" he yelled. "We're getting close to the surface." The shaft lit up with a brilliant light as he solar knight flared out his wings and rocketed upwards towards the light.

When he arrived, he noticed that he was surrounded by muddy swamp and towering mahagony trees. "Huh, the jungle," he said. He then gave a quick look around. Not too far off in the distance was the sickly purple landscape of the Corruption. A well-crafted wooden bridge spanned a massive gorge lined with stone bricks that divided the jungle from the Corruption. A twinge of satisfaction flowed through him as he recalled building the entire canyon by himself.

As he waited for the rest of the group to emerge from the shaft, he simply watched the clouds slowly moving across the sky.

---------------------

Mr. Bigmouth deftly piloted the repulsorsled away from the guards of Chong's mining operation.

"Can someone get in contact with Stripetail?" he asked. The bullet holes in the sled's windshield indicated that he had not gotten away undetected but thankfully, no one was injured and the sled wasn't too badly damaged.

Captain Carson nodded. She discreetly signaled for the rest of the group to step forward. "If I may," she said. "Why exactly have I been summoned here."

The wizard who greeted her spoke. "Simple," they said. "You are a Muggle who has been wronged by the archaic rules of Fudge."

The starship captain remembered how she had been left wandering outside Esbenshire for hours with fragmented memories after seeing an attack on a government building. "And what is the relevance to your cause?"

"Simple. We know that you are working with a powerful off-world wizard; a guest to our planet, if you will. If the Ministry treats Muggle guests so poorly, who knows what they'll do to the locals?"

Captain Carson kept her face neutral. She was here to assist Stripetail in apprehending Chong, not to take sides in an insurgency (even if the local government had mistreated her). But at the same time, perhaps she could recruit these Magicfolk to assist her? That and there was the possibility that she would be forced to take sides simply because the local government was hindering her efforts.

The bartender passed Frank and Friedrich a menu. The food available was mostly classic bar food like catfish burgers, fish and chips. But thanks to the outsized influence of the Mawashiians aboard, there were also a lot of Mawashiian dishes available, like the famous sumo wrestler's stew, chankonabe.

Kire's pulled out his ice rod and hastily laid down some transparent blocks of ice as his wings ran out of flight time. Gently alighting on the platform, he paused for a moment to allow his wings to restore energy. He looked down and saw the spots of light that were from the jetpacks of Sasha, Rivet and Angela. After a few seconds had passed, he leapt into the air and flared his wings, shooting upwards as the blocks of ice shattered into glittering dust.

Captain Carson held up a hand, gesturing for everyone to stop as she heard voices. She then carefully crept forward, her wand at the ready.

All of a sudden, she was greeted by someone saying. "Good evening, Captain Carson." Soon, several people seemed to emerge out of the walls.

The woman held her wand at the ready. Despite her being outnumbered (and likely underpowered), she figured she'd at least make them pay if they tried to kill her.

One of the wizards spoke. "Welcome to the meeting of the Society for the Abolishment of the Statute of Secrecy."

Dr. Kerzach was currently working in the kitchen of Winterville Inn. While baking wasn't his forte, it was still considered a part of his duties. As they were catering to Mawashiians, the traditional celebratory foods were scaled up to accomodate the enormous and muscular inhabitants of the planet. The town's artificial climate had been set to mimic a crisp winter day and as result, several of the residents and staff were bundled up. Currently, he was working on a traditional Mawashiian sponge cake, a traditional winter festival meal.

The Cassowary watched as an electric forklift moved the tray containing the freshly baked sponge cake out of the oven (a modified industrial kiln that had been specially made for the kitchen in the Winterville Industrial Sector). The alluring scent of vanilla filled the kitchen. The massive cake was nearly as wide across as he was tall. Once it was placed on the counter, Dr. Kerzach picked up the bucket of buttercream frosting with a full-sized mason's trowel sticking out of it and got to work slathering the frosting all over it. Meanwhile, some other staff were slicing the orange-sized Mawashiian strawberries that would serve as decoration.

Getting a judge to sign off on a warrant to search Paxton Powers's apartment, let alone the subpoena was not an easy task. Most of them refused, saying that they needed evidence beyond a reasonable doubt that he was trading in illegally acquired antiquities. But in the end, they got their warrant and subpoena from a judge who had promised to clean up corporate malfeasance.

Once that was done, the detectives returned to Commissioner Gordon with the paperwork in hand as well as in the system. The papers were then laid out on her desk.

"Well, Commissioner," the first detective said. "We actually got the paperwork completed. However, knowing Paxton's influence, we can probably only do this once since the moment the news gets a hold of this, we're going to have corporate interests lobbying for more favorable judges."

The cave rumbled and some loose gravel and dust fell down from the ceiling. The sound of Chong's autonomous mining drones got louder.

Kire nodded. "We need to get out of here. Those drills are coming closer."

He then pointed to a cave entrance in a ledge that overlooked the ruined subterranean town. "Up that way!"

The cave lit up with an orange glow as the solar knight extended the wings from his armor and rocketed into the air.

Captain Carson took the first step into the right branch. Just a short way in, she was forced to turn back by a solid stone wall.

Eventually, she led the group down into the left branch. To her surprise, she found some graffiti carved into the rock. She raised an eyebrow as she read it. It was a note that promised revenge for what was termed the "Esbenshire Massacre". The fact that carved at the base was a stylized stone filled in with what appeared to be pink paint indicated the origin of it.

"I think we're on the right path...at least as right as possible when we're probably going to run into some anti-government activists or even insurgents," she said.

"Lord Stripetail is the one who hired Captain Carson and this ship to transport him and his crew through the cosmos as well as provide him with various material and military support," the Spirarian said. They took a drink from the glass of beer they had purchased.

"As for new hires, we usually pick them up from various space stations, planets and the like. And of course, we do have families and children present as well and once the children come of age, they have the option to work for us. Of course, that is rare given that we do not allow child labor and the children must be eighteen to work." The Spirarian worker then turned to the duo. Captain Carson descended the stairwell, which opened into a smaller room. All she could see was a stone floor from the light that spilled in from the stairwell. She sniffed the air, it was dry and smelled of stone and wet earth. Surprising, given that she knew that she was on at least the fifth floor. She made to reach for a flashlight but then she recalled the spell she had learned.

"Lumos," she said, as she took her wand out. A brilliant white flash light up the room as the tip of her wand glowed like a miniature star, albeit without heat. She narrowed her eyes as she looked around. Two darkened passages branched off the very bland looking room. There were no unusual sounds or presence of anyone, but something still made her uneasy about the area.

The detectives nodded. "We'll try our best, Commissioner, but he has a disturbing number of judges in his pocket. Metaphorically, speaking that is. He hasn't directly paid off any of the judges — or else we could just have him arrested for bribery — but he is very liberal with his campaign donations."

Meanwhile, the pie that was being given to Blammo was being checked over to ensure that it didn't contain contraband. One of the Weasels handed the pie over to the group of stone-faced guards at the prisoner mailroom. The pie was then placed inside what looked like an X-ray machine, but it was an advanced mass spectrometer combined with electromagnetic scanner.

"Okay you two! Hands up!" The guards drew their guns and pointed it at the two Weasels, who obligingly raised their hands. They were then roughly handcuffed and hauled off to the holding cell.

"Seriously?" one of the guards said, looking at the results. "You baked a set of hand grenades, a set of self-lighting exothermic cutting sticks, a shotgun, forty 12-gauge shells, a drill, a hacksaw, blasting caps and wire inside a pie made of plastic explosive and expected we wouldn't notice the oddly heavy pie, let alone not pick it up on our scanners? Once they had moved up two floors, Captain Carson took off the emergency breathing hood and stuffed it back into its container. A quick check revealed she had an hour's worth more usage out of it. Below her, the haze of the dung bombs still lingered but it was slowly dissipating. And of course, Peeves and the janitor were still engaged in a screaming match.

"Well," Captain Carson said, looking at the fifth floor. The section of the floor that was open to the main hall of the castle was lined with gargoyles of every type. And there were additional rooms and hallways that branched off the main section. "I think this is the place. But where do we start?"
