1988 Theatrical Release / Laserdisc of the Original Movie.
« on: October 21, 2010, 02:29:26 PM »
It's possible to transfer Laserdisc as long as you have RCA or S-Video outputs on your player. It's pretty much the same way you transfer VHS to your computer, as both are analog sources.

As far as I know, there are no changes made to the other three films save for better picture and sound. I believe the Laserdiscs use the original Dolby Surround soundtrack while the VHS is linear stereo due to the limitations of the technology.

1988 Theatrical Release / Outcut land before time scenes

To your earlier post: does that mean they still haven't got the rights to show it? If so that would be a real shame.

The background on the first cel is definitely fake, but the actual cels themselves may be real. A lot of cels do come with fake backgrounds so this doesn't surprise me in the least.

1988 Theatrical Release / This should be released on Blu-ray

My mistake. Though I do wonder what Spielberg has against commentaries...

Was there a making-of special made during the movie's release? Maybe that could go on the Blu-Ray.

If Don Bluth and Gary Goldman were to do a commentary for this movie, it would be no-holds-barred. They have a tendency to criticise their own work in their other commentaries, so I think they would be more than happy to explain the struggles they faced while making this film. Plus, as some of you already know, Spielberg and Lucas do not record (or possibly even listen to) audio commentaries, so there is a chance of Bluth and Goldman criticizing Spielberg and Lucas's more childlike vision of the film.

Yes, dino-doug, maybe they will include those pics in a promotional materials gallery. Speaking of galleries, maybe some behind-the-scenes photos could be shared as well...

1988 Theatrical Release / Outcut land before time scenes

In case nobody else has recently browsed DonBluth.com, Gary Goldman has released another slightly different answer to the famous deleted scenes question:

"The scenes were deleted from the work print during a meeting with Steven Spielberg and George Lucas after a screening in late April of 1988, to reduce the more frightening scenes within the sharptooth attack of Littlefoot and Cera through the briars. Most of these scenes were in pencil test, not yet in color. The actual drawings may still be in the film's archive, now at Universal, but there is no negative film of these scenes. So a "director's cut" is completely out of the question. Further, we would have to get Universal, Steve and George to all agree that it would be worth the time and cost to complete these scenes to color, cut them into the negative and prepare a new master color print and inter-positive to strike a new digital master for DVD and DVD Blu-ray production. The chances of that, I believe, are nil. Looking back, I wish that we would have just finished the scenes to color with painted backgrounds and filmed them, just in case there would be a call for an original "director's cut" - but, alas, we did not. Thanks again for your inquiry."

I have to ask though, if there really was no negative made of those scenes, how did one of those shots find its way into a TV spot? How did the rest of the deleted scenes mentioned on this board find their way onto Finnish TV and in the hands of skilled dubbers? Seeing how popular the original film is, if Gary did ask Lucas and Spielberg about restoring the cut, even if those scenes may not be recoloured, I reckon it would make a bootful of money, but only if marketed correctly.

Pikkutassu, I really do hope they show the uncut version on Finnish TV. The worst case scenario would be that the station could show a new print of the film and not the version you saw all those years ago. At least they are open enough to listen to viewer's comments, unlike a lot of stations these days.

1988 Theatrical Release / Embarrassing
« on: July 25, 2010, 02:42:55 PM »
Getting into LBT as late as 13 years old, I have always thought of the series as somewhat of a guilty pleasure. As I have said somewhere before, it is too easy to mock LBT based on the sheer amount of sequels it has had, although a few friends of mine did grow up with the series and remember it very fondly.

The main reason why I did not grow up with LBT was because my parents just hated the idea of buying me the series. Without any knowledge of how wonderful the first movie was, and with the slog of adverts of the latest sequels when LBT was at its prime, they dismissed it, blaming the poor animation and it being too juvenile. I decided there was no way of convincing them to buy it, so whenever LBT was on TV, I would sit down, or watch, or even record the films onto VHS. I believe my old tape of the first movie is pretty beaten up, I watched it that many times. In a way, it was a life of secrecy. Nowadays, I'm not as embarrassed as I once was and if LBT is brought in a conversation, I'm more than happy to talk about it. I also believe, now that I'm older, that my parents wouldn't mind me watching it, or even care if I was watching it.

General Land Before Time / Voices
« on: July 25, 2010, 02:06:44 PM »
In LBT XI, it was even worse. Aaron Spann is definitely the worst Littlefoot; it's like nails on a chalkboard everytime I hear a peep out of him. Alec Medlock, as bad as he was, was nothing compared to Spann.

Casting Littlefoot was always difficult because he had such a central role to the series. I believe Universal consiously chose child actors for Littlefoot because the performance was always that much more authentic than, say, someone like Nancy Cartwright, as talented a voice actress as she is. The rest of the gang were voiced by adults in comparison (although Aria Curzon has been Ducky's voice since she was around 10 years old).

Character Discussion / The Yellobellies
« on: July 19, 2010, 06:27:35 AM »
I know this is an old topic, but is it alright if I add something here?

Is it just me, or did anybody else get the impression the Yellow Bellies were under the influence? There's a theory that berries in prehistoric times contained a small percentage of alcohol, and mass consumption of them would sometimes cause certain creatures to become "drunk" (and often fall victim to predators as a result). When the Yellow Bellies came into the Great Valley, they seemed relatively sober compared to when they left, possibly because of expository dialogue such as this:

Littlefoot: How long's it been since you ate?
Loofah: Must've been...err...let's see...right before you guys showed up.
Doofah: But not berries. Berries are the best!

I guess the Yellow Bellies would've eaten those berries until they died of certain alcohol-related complications... :p

Do you have any favorite characters or sequels?
It's difficult for me to pick favourite characters because I love all of the gang and their individual personalities. Cera and Littlefoot are both interesting characters, but I also think Ducky and Spike are very cute (are they the underdogs of the whole series?). Petrie is also likeable, though I'm a little fed up of the assumption that he confronts his fear of flying multiple times in every single movie...

My favourite sequels would be numbers 3, 4, 5 and 7 (although the ending to that one was a downer, the storyline more than made up for it).

1988 Theatrical Release / Laserdisc of the Original Movie.

I was thinking of CAA (the most extreme compression format) while explaining CLV. My mistake. The CLV version carries the movie on a two-sided disc. I don't think there is a CAA version out there, because of the short length of the movie. It's all very confusing; I'm still learning about a dead format that I may collect in future.

So…the difference between CAV and CLV is that a CAV disc has bonus features, while a CLV is just the movie on a disc?
Actually, no. CAV and CLV are different compression formats, not too dissimilar to a DVD. CAV is the highest-quality option on a Laserdisc, however the disadvantage is that you would have to turn the disc over halfway through the movie. CLV fits onto one side of a disc so you don't have to turn it over halfway through, but the picture quality is slightly poorer. I think you would still be able to get special features on a CLV disc if the distributor used up the other side of the disc.

Hello there! I am Spiketail (original name, I know  ).

Actually, I came into LBT rather late, when I was about 13, so I wasn't lucky enough to see it during my childhood. However, I have been a huge fan of it since.

I am one of those people who doesn't mind the sequels and I don't find them to be as bad as everyone says, even though there has been a ridiculous amount of them. It cannot be argued that the original is the best, though.

I do like to draw and I am currently on an animation course, so I might put up some fan animations in the future (if I can work out how to use the animated GIF format). At the moment, I can't draw the characters that well, but I'm sure I will improve with practise.  :)
