Title: 2010
Post by: The Chronicler on December 27, 2009, 03:15:35 PM
With the new year coming soon, I'm curious about how people are choosing to say 2010. For the first decade of the new millennium, virtually everyone said the year the same way. (two thousand one, two thousand two, etc.) Based on what I've heard, 2010 is the first year that seems to have two ways to say it, and I would like to see which way to say it you prefer to use.

I prefer to call it twenty-ten simply because it's quicker to say it that way.

I will most likely say "two-thousand ten" rather than twenty ten. I am probably under the influence of my own native language there where years are usually fully pronounced.
Another thing I have sometimes been wondering about is what the first two decades of a century are called. The later ones are the twenties, thirties, forties etc. but there is no coherent term for the first two decades of a century.

"two thousand ten" is the proper way to say it when speaking of a year.  It's not a ratio. :p I've never understood people's desire to make things shorter when it makes it improper in the process.

Two Thousand and Ten. I don't understand why some people insist on calling it Twenty-Ten...

The reason why is simple.  Most of the people who want to name it twenty-ten were born before the 1990s.  In truth, we called them like this:

Nineteen-ninety, Nineteen-ninety-one, Nineteen-ninety-two, etc.  Once 2000 came round, there was little choice as what to call the next decade of years.  Something like twenty-one would actually be saying 201.  Basically, some people just want to go back to the old way of saying things.

Despite this small piece of info, I shall still say two thousand ten. :)

I'm already calling it 2010, since it follows the millenia-old pattern. It was nineteen-x'ty-x, eighteen-x'ty-x, so this century is twenty-x'ty-x.

I've seen this past decade being referred to as the "noughties" in various publications here in Australia... not too sure about the rest of the world though.
