When did you first become interested in the Land Before time?

Jychara: I generally like to write stories, mostly fanfiction though I've started writing an original story recently. I like to play video games, both on a console and on the computer. I also like to create music videos and artwork . I like to read from time to time as well if I find a book or online story or fanfiction that catches my interest.

Saft: That I'm not entirely sure. I was only about 3 years old when the movie came to theatres, roughly, and probably only 4 when it was released on video. I don't really recall a time before I knew about Land Before Time; it's pretty much been a part of my life since I can remember. So when I became a fan, I'd have to say it was probably when I was 4 years old because that's the earliest I would think I would have been able to watch it.

What was your inspiration for Out of the Shadows?

What was your inspiration for Heinous?
Title: Ask me questions
Post by: DarkHououmon on February 25, 2010, 10:25:45 PM
Cancerian Tiger: While not all the ideas spawned from this, the initial idea to write the story stemmed from a conversation between my brother and I. We were talking about LBT and at some point, Chomper was brought up and how his meat-eating nature is conflicting to Littlefoot and his friends, who are plant-eaters. My brother joked about how in the future, one of the characters (Ducky I think) would look up at him and go "We're still friends right?" to which Chomper would attack. After that, I talked with an online friend about the conversation and I commented how it might make a good story. They encouraged me, so that same day I wrote the first chapter for Out of the Shadows.

Serris: I was interested in writing an LBT war story that didn't involve any weaponry other than what the dinosaurs had on their bodies (though this may change in the progression of the story) and involved mostly herbivorous villains rather than carnivorous ones. Some inspiration also draws from people's opinions here on GOF involving characters and such. For instance, some ideas for how the story will progress stem from what I read in the "Getting To Know You LBT-Style", but for the sake of those who don't want to be spoiled, I won't give anything away.

What are some fan fictions you have read (not necessarily LBT)?
Title: Ask me questions
Post by: DarkHououmon on February 25, 2010, 11:16:23 PM
I won't be able to name all of them because I read so many over the years I lost track, but here's a list of some of the fanfiction I've read-

D.O.L.L. (Codename: Kids Next Door)

This fanfic, far as I know, was never finished, and it is a shame too. The story, although no longer canon with the series, really explored the psyche of one of the Delightful Children From Down The Lane, who, previously, have been shown to be so obedient and well-mannered that they didn't feel like human beings anymore. The story involved one of the girl members getting separated and is taken in by the KND, where she begins to show signs of her own personality and awareness of self, and Father, the main villain and caretaker of the Delightful Children From Down The Lane, doesn't like it.

Land Beyond Time (Land Before Time)

This was one of the first long LBT fanfics I've read and remains one of my favorites, despite it not being online (it was removed due to it being in script format) for years. The story had plenty of action, convincing integration of advanced technology in the LBT world, twists and turns, great characterization, and emotional conflicts. The story had a few subplots melted into it, 3 of which included Ali joining the bad guys after she is tricked into thinking Littlefoot killed her mother, a flightless and vengeful Pterano attempting to get revenge on those whom he believe wronged him, Petrie finding out his uncle is really his father and his father was really his uncle, and Shorty being turned against Littlefoot through a painful mental device that magnified his resentment towards Littlefoot and Bron's father and son relationship.

Son of Scar (The Lion King)

Released before The Lion King II, Son of Scar told the tale of a very big (even bigger than Simba) dark lion named Kisasian (I might not be spelling it right). It was extremely long, but also an enjoyable read. The story involved Simba having to contend with Kisasian, who wants revenge against Simba for killing his father. Kisisian is portrayed as a cruel character, even not treating his lionesses right (two of which actually abandon him to be with Simba). Kisasian is nothing like Kovu and more menacing than Kovu was when he was still brainwashed by his mother. The story was quite violent, particularly when Kisasian rips Simba several times to the point where he could barely move. Although revenge fanfics involving the offspring or sibling of a character aren't that uncommon, back then it was something new that I hadn't seen before and the author really pulled it off well in my opinion.

Beyond the Other Side (Digimon)

One of the best fanfics I've read for this fandom, Beyond the Other Side crosses over Digimon season 2 and Digimon Tamers, and yet somehow manages to keep many key elements canon to each show in tact. The interactions between the two sets of characters is intriguing, even conflicting at times, such as how Rika kills Digitamamon and has Renamon absorb his energy, which enrages Yolei who says that he could have been saved if the dark ring was removed from his body. The story still retained the formula of the series, in my opinion, but also introduced elements that would otherwise not exist in the shows, one of my favorites being when the DigiDestined find out that, in the Tamers' world, they are just fictional characters. This brings about a rather emotional sequence and the author managed to portray this sequence without it becoming too over the top or crazy.

Twisted Reality (Code Lyoko)

This is probably one of the darkest, if not the darkest, Code Lyoko fanfic I read. It involves Yumi going into another world where XANA is terrorizing the Earth, accompanied by Jeremy. While the story does have its share of action, the real focus of the story, where it truly shines, is the psychological aspect of it, like how the alternate versions of Odd, Ulrich, and Ayeka are affected by Jeremy's portrayal and how they react to the good Jeremy and how sadistically cruel the evil Jeremy has become and how he constantly likes to torment his former friends. If you want to read a fanfic that has a lot more psychological conflict, this would definitely be something I'd personally recommend.

Serris: So far I've read the Revenge series, Sharptooth Valley 1 and 2, Twilight Valley, Enter the Decon, Quest for the Energy Stones, One Long Tail, and The Night Ruby Went Crazy. I'm sure there's some I'm forgetting about, though.

f-22 "raptor" ace: The closest thing to alternate history I've read is Far-Seer, part one of the Quintaglio trilogy involving dinosaurs being transported to another world by aliens. But I wouldn't consider the story alternate history. I've been meaning to read His Majesty's Dragon, an alternate history involving dragons in the Napoleon Wars, but I've been quite lazy with reading it.

Serris: I would say probably rock and metal. As for Twilight Valley, I only relatively recently got interested in the story. I admit I still haven't read large portions of the story and have been rather lazy about reading the remaining chapters. I'll try to get around to reading the rest of the story. For suggestions/critiques, I can't really think of any at the moment.

LBTFan13: I was inspired from watching some music videos from Putfile (before I knew of YouTube) and I had put up a couple mvs on Putfile (they're no longer up). I had actually imagined scenes playing in my head while listening to music in a similar fashion to mvs before I even saw one for the first time. Zatch Bell to Blow Me Away was the first time I had attempted to visualize these thoughts through mv-making.

Rat_Lady7: It is Kranaga that translates to "Greetings, respected humans". The language is spoken by the Kra, an invented race of fictional, feathered dinosaurs. The line itself is spoken by Gar, the Priest of Life, who is one of the main characters of Dinosaur Wars.

Seeing that you mentioned that you've read my fanfic, Quest for the Energy Stones, I can't help but ask, what is it about that story you find interesting? I just want to know.

Also, seeing as that's a crossover fanfic with Bionicle, are you familiar with Bionicle in any way?
Title: Ask me questions
Post by: DarkHououmon on February 26, 2010, 10:16:39 AM
The Chronicler: I admit I haven't read the latest chapter or two, but what motivated me to read it was to see how you handled the Bionicle/Land Before Time crossover idea. I was also interested to see how the Bionicle people (who are made of metal and such) would react to seeing creatures made of flesh and bone. I was surprised that, in your fanfic, they have heard of flesh and bone animals before; I was under the impression it would be something totally different to them as every animal I remember seeing was robotic like them. I think the last chapter I read was the one or two just after that one character was banned from his tribe. I am familiar with Bionicle and had seen some parts of a movie or two. However it doesn't hold my interest that well. In fact it mostly disturbs me, since all the characters are robotic and even the animals are robotic and I can't fathom how they manage to reproduce and thrive. But I know they're just movies for entertainment purposes so I shouldn't really be thinking that deep into them.

I assume you've been reading what I put on fanfiction.net so far. That's good, because even though I have a lot more of it already posted here on GoF, I consider that a rough draft in need of editing. Basically, once I put a chapter of that story on fanfiction.net, you'll know that I've finished working on that chapter and that I'm satisfied with it.

Serris: Whoops I forgot to fully answer that question. It was curiosity. When I was thinking of writing Heinous, I decided to check your story out. And yes I do like science fiction works and have read a few of them, such as Dinosaur Wars and Far-Seer. I'm more interested in paleontology-based sci-fi novels, which I don't see much of.

Outside of theropods, what prehistoric animals interest you the most?

Post by: DarkHououmon on March 06, 2010, 12:29:22 AM
Pangaea: I'm interested in animals from the Permian Era (such as dimetrodon and the gorgonopsids) as well as animals from the current era, the Cenozoic Era, such as the Paleocene and Miocene Epochs. Generally carnivorous animals interest me more (like smilodon) but sometimes herbivores can catch my interest as well (such as edaphosaurus).

^ Wait...are you referring to my first question? Sorry. I think I might have said something confusing. Let me try to clear things up:

First question: I knew that theropods were your favorite dinosaurs, so I asked what your favorite non-theropods (dinosaurian and otherwise) were. You answered that one already (though if you had anything to say to expand on it, I'd love to hear it. :yes).

Second question: I asked what your favorite theropods were. (Maybe I should have asked that one first. :oops)

Pangaea: Oh, whoops, sorry. I must've misread your second question. Anyway, I don't think I can name a theropod I don't really like, but among the ones that are my favorite include: utahraptor, velociraptor, tyrannosaurus, tarbosaurus, spinosaurus, baryonyx, dilophosaurus, guanlong, cryolophosaurus, carnotaurus, majungasaurus, allosaurus, and ceratosaurus. My favorite theropod groups are tyrannosaurids, dromaeosaurids, and spinosaurids.

I'd say mostly the carnivores, such as wolves, foxes, snakes, crocodiles, hawks, eagles, komodo dragons, hyenas, bears, lions, and sharks. While I do still like herbivores, there's just something about carnivores that intrigue me so much.

Do you consider yourself a serious person?
Title: Ask me questions
Post by: DarkHououmon on May 04, 2010, 11:31:51 PM
Pokeplayer: I actually already did make up my own carnivore. Well a couple, but the one I use the most often is the alimon (looks like a carnivorous sauropod with feathers on back of neck). I've used them in Out of the Shadows and in the comic Counterinsurgency. I may also introduce them in a Dino Squad fanfic/comic I might do (still deciding) and I also hope to do an original story to try to develop them more. A couple other, though less developed, carnivores I came up with were the draraptor (looks sort of like a wyvern with feathery wings/hands) and kemon (looks like a four-footed mammal with a more reptilian head and feet).

Ratlady: I'm not really sure how to answer that, to be honest. I guess it really depends on my mood and the situation. Sometimes I take things too seriously or too literally and I can understand when a situation may be serious. But I also do joke around, typically online but sometimes, though more rarely, in real life. So I guess the best way I can answer that question is I'm neither completely serious nor a complete jokester. Basically I'm serious when in situations that would require that and more light-hearted when the situation is not serious. Of course I'm pretty sure I have made mistakes in the past before where I was too light-hearted in a serious situation or too serious in a light-hearted situation. I hope that makes sense. I apologize if I confused you.

Naw, it made sense. Meh...I seem to be more serious then a goof ball lately... :p

Anyhow, next question: What other fandoms do you love besides LBT, Dino Squad, and Brother Bear?
Title: Ask me questions
Post by: DarkHououmon on May 05, 2010, 08:46:53 AM
Ratlady: Spongebob is one of the only shows I still watch on Nickelodeon, another one being Fairly Oddparents. Nowadays I prefer Spongebob over Fairly Oddparents. I usually watch it anytime it's on. I find the show rather appealing and I can't up but really like the characters, especially Spongebob and Patrick. Personally I consider Spongebob one of the best cartoons left on Nickelodeon. Fairly Oddparents is good. I like how Timmy seems to act like an ordinary kid (for the most part since he has fairies) and is sometimes selfish, but in the end does the right thing and, despite his low IQ, has shown quick wit throughout the series.

On Nicktoons TV there's also Jimmy Neutron and Danny Phantom I also enjoy, but not as often. I can't remember why I originally got interested in Jimmy Neutron (probably his experiments and robotic dog) but Danny Phantom I liked because of the unique story and the action. It still had its funny moments but the show was, in my opinion, more serious than Fairly Oddparents.

Oh! And I forgot another nicktoon, Avatar. I like the story, the characters, the action, the comedy, etc. When I first saw the show, I wasn't sure if I would like it or not. But after I did watch some episodes, I admit I was hooked.

Another show I like, a webshow, is Red VS Blue. The main thing I love about it is the comedy. I also like the characters, distinct from one another, and such. I was introduced to it about a couple years ago and I've been watching it since.

I could name some more shows, but I'll just leave it at this.

This might be an odd question, but do you believe in the term "guilty pleasure" as in having "LBT as a guilty pleasure" due to certain circumstances of what seems to be socially acceptable in society, or do you kick out the labels and just like what you like even if other people would call them guilty pleasures?
Title: Ask me questions
Post by: DarkHououmon on May 06, 2010, 11:01:37 PM
The Great Valley Guardian: I haven't considered starting a roleplay based on one of my fanfictions. I could, perhaps, but I wouldn't really know where to begin, nor would I know what fanfic to use. I could say Out of the Shadows, but due to it being an R story, not sure if it'll work, unless I were to try to keep the story PG-13 at least. And yeah I'm aware I'm not that active in roleplays. I apologize for that. I do try to keep active and I used to be more active in roleplays in general years ago, but lately it's become very hard for me to continue participating in an RP for very long, hence why I end up becoming inactive quickly. It's got nothing to do with the rp itself; I just can't keep myself active as well as I used to.

Alex: You mean DarkHououmon? It's the name of a very old character of mine, from either 1999 or 2000. Hououmon is the japanese name for Phoenixmon. I tacked on Dark in it, DarkHououmon, which is basically a recolored evil version of Hououmon (recolors are common even among canon digimon characters).DarkHououmon would translate to "Dark Phoenix Monster", while Hououmon just Phoenix Monster. I used the name for my FF.Net account and it's stuck ever since. I don't really use DarkHououmon as a character anymore, but I still continue to use the name as a username.

Edit: Whoops I didn't see your question, Rat_Lady.

Rat_Lady: I never really use the term "guilty pleasure" and have never really labeled anything as such. To me, nothing is a "guilty pleasure", it's just what you like. I think using the term "guilty pleasure" automatically labels something as "strange" or "weird", while unconsciously labeling something else "normal", which I think is a bit unfair. Sure we may not like all the same stuff, and that's normal. But I don't think it's fair for someone to label an interest a "guilty pleasure" simply because it doesn't fin in with the "norm" or is something they personally don't like.

Cool, I had never heard of that digimon. Guess I didn't watch the show long enough ;p

How many of the seasons did you watch?
Title: Ask me questions
Post by: DarkHououmon on May 07, 2010, 05:46:20 PM
Alex: I watched all of seasons 1 and 2, nearly all of season 3, most of season 4, and parts of season 5. I haven't seen enough of season 5 to say whether or not I liked it, but my favorite season was 3, least favorite 4, and for the same reason. In seasons 1 and 2, it was all about the partnership between human and digimon, how the human helps the digimon digivolve and become stronger. In season 4, since the humans turn into digimon, this partnership is destroyed. While it was a unique concept, it didn't feel like Digimon to me. Season 3, on the other hand, not only kept the partnership, but actually enhanced it by making the human/digimon partnership even more powerful. Now not only can the human partner aid their digimon in more ways than before by using cards (making them faster, granting them new attacks, etc) but they can use their own energy to make their digimon stronger (even feel the digimon's pain) and eventually merge with the digimon. Another reason I like season 3 the most is it was more serious than seasons 1 and 2. Seasons 1 and 2 put in dialogue where it was supposed to be silence and add in all kinds of corny jokes. Season 3 still had jokes but not as much and the show seemed to take itself more serious and actually had silent moments.

Post by: Alex on May 07, 2010, 05:55:29 PM
Very interesting. I remember seeing the stuff about merging with the digimon (wans't there some of that in the first movie?). I didn't like the idea. Same thing happened to Megaman NT I think. But I never got exposed to it. I only saw seasons 1 and 2 of digimon, so I shouldn't talk bad about it.

Did you ever play the first Digimon World? It was for Playstation I think.
Title: Ask me questions
Post by: DarkHououmon on May 07, 2010, 06:22:05 PM
Alex: The merging with digimon thing comes later in the season. I personally like it. Not obsessed with it, but I like it. It adds another, deeper level of the digimon/human partnership. As for Digimon World, yes I have played it, and beaten it. I don't have the save anymore but I had done pretty much everything in the game except for collect all the cards far as I know. I also used to be good at raising digimon to the point where I could choose what I want by training it right. I usually ended up with the digimon I wanted. I've gotten rusty though.

Title: Ask me questions
Post by: DarkHououmon on May 07, 2010, 06:47:28 PM
Alex: You're welcome. Oh and about Digimon World, here's a hint from what I learned playing. Sometimes you just need to focus on one or two traits (sometimes three I think) to get a specific digimon. And by focus I don't mean neglect all the other training sections; just make sure certain traits are higher than the rest. If memory serves me right, if you have Gabumon and you focus on speed and defense you'll most likely get Garurumon. If you have Agumon and focus on offense and HP, I think, you're likely to get  Greymon. The Digimon's weight also matters. If the Digimon's weight is very light, either it won't digivolve or it'll die before it reaches Ultimate. If the Digimon is very heavy, it won't digivolve and, if it's a rookie that's that heavy, you're likely to get Numemon. Ultimates take longer to get and I find that I usually end up spending most of the time training up until I get an Ultimate. I have a better chance of getting an Ultimate if I have everything over 400 and HP and MP over 4,000.

Title: Ask me questions
Post by: DarkHououmon on May 07, 2010, 10:09:52 PM
Alex: You're welcome. There is something else I forgot to mention. From my experience, it's a gradual thing. You might not get the digimon you want right away, and Ultimates won't come until later. But as you raise your rank it does get easier, from my experience. You can raise your rank by raising different Digimon, and it becomes easier to raise Digimon if you let them die naturally and don't let them be killed in battle. If they are killed in battle, they forget everything (or some of the stuff I believe) and have low stats, but if they die naturally, not only do they retain all previous moves but their stats are higher. Oh and you also get to choose which egg you want.

Note: There are items you can get to force your Digimon to digivolve into something. While this might be handy, I would try to avoid it, unless there's absolutely no other way, because the Digimon ends up not as strong initially as it would be if it naturally digivolved into that form.
