LBT Fanfiction / Not a Monster
« on: April 03, 2017, 04:24:47 AM »
Hi all. Well this is my (late) response to the March prompt of writing from the point of view of a Sharptooth/omnivore, excluding Ruby and Chomper. Now this story is also a short spin off from The Seven Hunters and will feature characters in the story. I have Rhombus permission to use his characters/content from The Seven Hunters and I thank him for that. For those of you who have not read The Seven Hunters I highly recommend it, though you won't necessarily need to have read it to understand the context of the story but it is still highly recommended. So with out further ado, here it is.

WARNING: Large editing performed and bloody content in the later half of the story.

Not a Monster

Ducky looked down at the starlit ground, not taking her eyes off the grass gently blowing in the breeze, a cruel taunt to her since she couldn't stomach it anymore, here she was surrounded by plants but none of them were edible to her now, the only thing that had been on the menu tonight was the body of a shattered Mother Flyer with both of her wings torn and her neck savagely ripped open. "By me" reminded an unwelcome voice in her head. Ducky closed her eyes tightly and took a shuddering breath, she could not bear to think of it anymore and she didn't want to see her still bloody claws, the claws of a killer but they belonged to her; Ducky the Fast Biter or Haven as she had been so recently been renamed by Chomper. The purple Biter was indeed right about her name, it was perfect for her, it reflected her wishes perfectly, the wish to protect rather than kill. Now however, even her new name felt like a cruel form of mockery. She was no safe haven she had just killed, taken the life of a mother. Although her reasons for the kill were justified, to stop her and her pack from starving and to save her dear friend Petrie or as the Sharptooth Flyer was now called Spotter from the mother Flyer's wrath, she could not find any sense of closure for her actions.

Although Ducky was no longer hungry having eaten her fair share of her kill she still felt sick to the stomach. The last time she and the other's hunted it wasn't nearly as hard; back then she could just deny the truth and say that she had no part in killing poor Rett even though she had a vital part in the hunt. However, Ducky could not deny the truth any longer she had been the one to strike the killing blow. The blood on her claws was the christening of her being a killer and not just any killer. "A killer of Mamas" thought Ducky bitterly, the poor youngling was haunted by that fact, if she could kill this mother then what about…...her mother?

She would be able to do that to her own family. Ducky shivered in fear. To many thoughts all jumbled together, some of her old self the side that had once been Ducky the Swimmer but the newer thoughts belonged to Haven the Fast Biter, the cold and calculating killer that could snuff the life out of anyone in a single instant. No longer the kind, caring Swimmer who could find the good in anyone but she still was Ducky but she was also Haven but now however the former Swimmer, now turned Sharptooth hadn't the slightest clue who she was anymore.

Ducky looked out over the densely-populated Lowlands; her new home, from her vantage point in front of the cave she and her friends lived in she could see countless dinosaurs resting from Longnecks, Threehorns and even her former kind; Swimmers. Ducky grimaced as she watched her former kind from the distance, she could no longer go back to being a Swimmer again. Ducky turned away and closed her eyes while taking in long, hard breaths.

"Ducky?"

Ducky did not look up, she recognised Littlefoot's voice but it was different, it had a deeper tone and had that same growling quality that each of them now possessed. Ducky could also deduct that the rest of her friends were now watching her. However it was with her new sense of smell that she knew this, she could smell each of her friend's unique sent along with their emotions and from their scents, she gathered that they were worried about her and why wouldn't they be? The light green Fast Biter absolutely reeked of sadness and everyone knew why, which was why they had kept an extra big vigil over her, knowing that she would not take the events of the day at all well.

"Are you alright Ducky?" asked Spike, another reminder of the change that had occurred after they had touched that cursed stone although this was one of the few good things that was brought about by the change, her beloved brother finally being able to talk. Spike walked up to his sister and sat down beside her with his arm protectively wrapped around her while she leaned on him for comfort and support. There was nothing that could be said at the moment and Spike knew this. What his sister needed now was support, she needed a body to lean on not a whole load of overwhelming questions. After all it was rather obvious that Ducky was not okay but still traumatised by her part in the hunt.

It was in an uncomfortable silence that her friends left the two siblings alone.

"Poor Ducky" said Petrie when they got back into the cave. It was an opinion shared by everyone in the cave. Petrie could feel her pain after all it was his former kind that she had killed and it was the children that he had killed but he had not been hit nearly as hard as Ducky. In a way the intervention the former Swimmer had taken was something that Petrie reflected on the most about the hunt. Having The Mother Flyer charge at him with no chance of escape from her vengeful talons then Ducky coming out of nowhere and saving his life but mortally wounding the mother Flyer in the process.

"Do you think she'll ever get over it?" asked Cera to no one in particular.

"In time," said Littlefoot as he looked back at his two friends sitting together outside "but until then we should all do our part to help Ducky overcome this" He received silent nods from his friends but Littlefoot was more worried then he let on. Out of all the former leaf eaters he was the first to make a kill and he had not handled it very well, but Ducky was so much more emotional than he was. Her ability to feel another's pain was one of her greatest strengths having always done what she could to help those she cared about but in this case it was a grave weakness. Out of everyone in the pack it was Ducky that took the most pain and trauma from a hunt even if she did not make the kill but now that she had made her first kill she was more unstable then ever "and who knows how long it will take for her to recover….if she recovers" thought Littlefoot sadly.

Meanwhile Ducky had finally regained her composure having let out several soft sobs after her friends had left. She had to admit that if it hadn't been for Spike then she would have lost her sanity long before now. He was her rock, one of the only things that had kept her sane after the change.

Ducky took a deep breath and sighed. "Thank you Spike, I am okay now I am, I am" said Ducky but Spike was not convinced. He gave her a look that clearly said "Are you sure? Because I don't think you are"

Although Spike had gained the ability of speech after the change he still retained his old method of communication with his sister, it was well established between the two since they knew each other so well that all either of them had to do was to look at each other in the eye and they would know what the other was feeling. The change had not taken that away from them and Spike could clearly see Ducky's inner turmoil as well as being able to smell it which made the former Spiketail fear for his sister, she was on the very brink of breaking and he knew it.

However, Ducky looked away from her brother and slowly stood on her feet and turned away from Spike. "I am going to sleep" she said in exhaustion. She walked slowly back into the cave to see her friends sitting together but when she entered they all turned to look at her with concern as they watched the clearly exhausted Fast Biter walk slowly to her sleeping place with a resigned look upon her face. She didn't say anything, she just lay down and closed her eyes and before she knew it she was asleep, having being too tired to think anymore. Spike walked into the cave and was quick to lay down by his sister. He looked over at his friends and gave them a single nod. He would look after her tonight.

The Great Valley

"Time for sleep, little ones" said Mother Swimmer to her children as she placed herself down in her sleeping spot so her children could come and settle down beside her. They all did but there was one area near her leg that was completely devoid of any of her children. Ura closed her eyes and sighed sadly as she looked solemnly at the spot where Spike would sleep with Ducky right up next to him. She was so used to feeling the young Spiketail curl up beside her, she was so used to seeing her little Ducky sleep with her brother, there was never a day that they did not sleep together with exception of Spike's time with Tipy. But every other time Ducky would always be sleeping with Spike but now that space was empty and devoid of life. "Fitting" said a sad voice in Ura's head "It's been how many cycles of the Night Circle and still I expect them to come to sleep"

Ura watched her children fall asleep one by one but she found herself awake long afterwards and still staring at the empty space in the nest which now represented the gaping hole in her heart. She could still see them together, sleeping, playing, eating and she could hear their voices. Spike's friendly low grunts and Ducky's cheerful, happy voice, she could hear Ducky's "yep, yep, yep" in her ears.

Ura turned her head back and let out a few chocked sobs as tears threatened to come out of her watering eyes. "I miss you so much my little ones, my dear little Ducky and my beautiful boy Spike. I'm so sorry, I failed you, I hope you're in a better place now dears, I will never stop loving you though, no matter where you are" said Ura quietly, her words heard by no one but herself. A few tears fell and Ura bent her head in sadness as her heart broke for what felt like the millionth time since 'that' night.

She allowed herself a few minutes to mourn her two beloved children. No one was up and her children were all asleep so she could finally allow this moment of weakness to show. However, after her brief moment of mourning had past she rested her head on the ground. "I love you Ducky, I love you Spike. I'm so sorry" was the last thought that went through Ura's head before she succumbed to sleep, a single tear falling to the ground beside her.

The Night Circle was at its fullest, bathing The Great Valley in its subtle light, for a night predator it was perfect hunting conditions with more than enough light to see it's query or rather her query. The light green Fast Biter advanced through The Great Valley with silence and a speed that can only come from someone who knew the place intimately. Haven stopped and sniffed the air intently her sniffer telling her exactly what dinosaurs were around and by the strong scent of her former kind in her nostrils she knew she was getting close. Her yellow eyes narrowed and she headed off at brisk pace through the foliage with great stealth except for the rumbling of her hungry belly, The Fast Biter was hungry and tonight no one was safe because of her, the silent hunter.

Finally, she caught sight of her prey, she slowed her pace and hid in the bushes before she carefully peered out and saw that she was about a longneck length away from a family of Swimmers. They were sleeping near a bend in the river under a tree in the distance; a majestic waterfall poured from the top of the cliff, perfect for masking her approach since the sound of splashing water at the base of the cliff would make hearing her difficult. Ahead of her was a mother Swimmer with dozens of children sleeping beside her. The predatory smile that crossed the Fast Biter's features would have made any leaf eater shiver with fright at the sight of her pale, sharp teeth gleaming coldly in the moonlight as they hungered for flesh to sink into. Haven eyed the small family and plotted her next move in her head, it would be simple enough to sneak over, slit the mother's throat and then take the children while they were trapped against their mother's bulk. The irony that their mother's very body that was supposed to protect them would be the death trap. Her plans were cut short however when the mother Swimmer awoke and yawned tiredly. She turned her head to look at her children only to sigh sadly and the Fast Biter knew why.

In an instant, the Fast Biter's eyes changed to show sympathy and pain. Ducky watched how sad her mother was since the night of the change. She just had to talk to her again, she didn't care if she was in The Valley or that she was a Sharptooth, that was her mother there and she just had to be with her again. Tears built around her eyes she stepped out of her hiding place quietly and walked in a daze like fashion towards her family. Her mother still hadn't noticed her having been too busy looking at the spot that Ducky realised was where she and her brother used to sleep, Ducky had to choke back a sob at seeing her mother like this. "Oh, Mama I am so, so, so, so, sorry" thought Ducky as she advanced onward however as she approached to within a Swimmer length of her mother her foot came down on a stick which snapped loudly.

Ducky froze as her mother turned her head sharply and gazed directly at her with a startled and a somewhat horrified expression, she recognised this Fast Biter from that terrible night. In a single act of protective instinct Ura swung her tail around her children defensively, waking them up in the process but just as she was about to make an alert call she saw the Fast Biter charge forward at full speed straight towards her. Her children screamed when they realised what was heading towards them and hid behind their mother's tail while their mother braced herself for an impact that never came. A second before the supposed impact Ura had closed her eyes but when she didn't feel anything she opened her eyes in confusion which changed to bewilderment as she looked down at the Fast Biter who was now laying on the ground in front of her, holding onto her arms and sobbing hysterically.

Ura was stunned, for once she had no idea what to do, this was something she had never expected to happen to her in her life but all that changed when the light green Fast Biter spoke in Leaf Eater to everyone including the Fast Biter's astonishment. "Oh Mama, I am so, so sorry" said….. no, it couldn't be. The idea was absurd. Dinosaurs did not change kinds. Ura was staring wide eyed and wide mouthed at this Fast Biter. "This light green Fast Biter" corrected Ura's mind. "No it-it can't be" she said in horror as she looked at the light green Fast Biter that had just called her mother in what sounded like 'her' voice.

Ducky looked up at her mother with tears streaming down her eyes "I missed you so much mommy I did, I did. I am so happy to see you again yes, yes, yes" she sobbed into her mother's arms.

Ura felt her heart shake violently and her stomach dropped, her mind was telling her that it was impossible, that her senses were lying to her but she had heard her; that was a voice she knew all too well. "D-Ducky?" she said in shock.

The former Swimmer looked up at her mother as if pleading for recognition. "Yes, Mama it is me it is Ducky, yes….yes…yes" she said in a severely chocked up voice as she leapt up and embraced her mother full on while crying loudly.

Ura on the other hand was stunned, too stunned to register the embrace as her breathing became unsteady and tears clouded her vision. "You can't be…..Ducky…She's dead….My son and daughter…. They're both…" Ura couldn't say anymore, she was trembling too violently.

"Ducky?" Ura looked to see her children watching the exchange with looks of shock and horror on their faces. Ducky turned to them and went right over to them before anyone could do anything but she didn't attack, she just pulled them all into a big wet embrace as she called out each of her sibling's names loudly and with each name called Ura's heart cracked more and her stomach dropped further. No Sharptooth would know that, most dinosaurs in The Valley couldn't even keep up with all her children's names only Ducky and Spike would know.

With horrible realisation and a terrible pain in her heart Ura realised that this was indeed Ducky standing in front of her but she was not a Swimmer she was a Sharptooth, a Fast Biter. "How!?" lamented Ura in her mind as she suddenly got up to her feet and pulled her daughter into a strangling embrace as she finally burst into tears. For what felt like an eternity mother and daughter both clung to each other and cried their hearts out at the terrible situation that they had found themselves in. Ura could hardly process the fact that her little one was alive and now a Sharptooth, an eater of flesh and she was actually hugging her but this was Ducky, her daughter, she would never do that to family. Never.

Finally, the two broke off to look at each other, so much emotions were passed between them in that one glance. From Ducky pain, unparalleled sorrow, regret and fear but also love and a small amount of happiness. From Ura the same pain, regret and sadness but also confusion, shock and heartbreak as well as love and joy. However, all Ura could do now was ask a single question "How?"

"I am so sorry Mama, my friends, Spike and I, we just wanted to see that stone and we made a wish on it to be powerful enough to defeat Red Claw and it….it…. did…..this to us" Ducky looked down and sobbed even harder. She was hardly aware that her mother was also mourning her fate with her. "I do not like being a Sharptooth no, no, no. I want to be a Swimmer again! I do not want to be a monster!" cried Ducky loudly.

"I know Ducky, I know but you are not a monster dear, you're my little girl" said her mother holding her close to her and nuzzling her all over.

"Mommy I am scared-ed" sobbed Ducky clinging to her mother like a frightened hatchling.

Her mother gently shushed her "I'm here" she said as she embraced her.

Suddenly a loud grumble sounded from Ducky's belly a painful reminder that Ducky had not eaten in days but now that she thought of it the scent of Swimmer filling her nostrils was so good, so appetizing that it made her mouth water. The Fast Biter's eyes changed and narrowed. "I am starving" she said calmly. Too calmly. It sent a chill down the spines of all the Swimmers.

"I have not eaten in days, no, I have not"

Ura looked worried, the situation was difficult enough without dealing with a hungry Fast Biter as such; she wasn't sure what to do. In normal circumstances, she would have already chased the Fast Biter away but this was Ducky, her daughter, she could not abandon her. "I need food" That simple statement caused the little Swimmers to back away from their changed sister in fright and Ura instinctively wrapped her tail around them.

"Well…. you could try in the stream for snapping shells" said Ura in more than a little nervousness which turned into cold fear when her daughter gave a soft laugh but the sound was frightening, it sounded as dangerous as the current form Ducky was in.

"Oh mother, I am too big for such trifles," said the Fast Biter with a dismissive wave of her hand "On the other hand, Swimmer looks so appetizing" The smile that broke the Fast Biter's lips made Ura want to run away more than anything, her eyes were wide with fear, surely her Ducky would not do this…would she?

"Please Ducky, you would not hurt me or your brothers and sisters, we are your family" said Ura in a shaking voice, while she tried to keep the fear out of her voice she found it was just impossible, the situation was so unprecedented and horrifying. it was not something she could fathom in her darkest night terrors; this was worse.

Haven's expression softened a little "Your right mother, Ducky would never harm you, she would never even think of causing harm to her dear family but I. Am. Haven." Said the Fast Biter with firm conviction. Ura backed up, getting to her feet to stand in front of her children while Haven paced around her but Ura wouldn't have any of it, she followed and tracked her every move with rising fear.

"Yes, that is my new name, my Sharptooth name given to me by Chomper after my first hunt but my first kill was also a Mother like you, only difference she was just a Flyer, not nearly as tasty as a Swimmer and while Ducky would be too weak to what needs to be done I, Haven AM NOT!" Haven's last words were spat out as she snarled and leapt at her mother who was too stunned by the situation and her daughter's actions to mount a defence.

Haven collided with Ura in the middle of her body the force of the blow knocking Ura onto her back, winded while the air filled with the screams of the young Swimmer's but Haven paid no attention to them. She didn't even hesitate to claw at her mother's exposed chest and belly with her clawed hands and feet causing her mother to scream in pain and blood to drench the scene. Haven launched her head down and latched it onto her mother's throat and with one tearing motion and a terrible sound of ripping flesh, tore a large chunk of it out, not enough to immediately kill but enough to make the death slow.

Having dealt with her mother Haven charged straight for the children with a blood thirsty roar taking up two of her siblings in her mouth and crushed her maw down on them. The taste of blood filled her mouth as she swallowed her own brothers.

What followed next was something that made Ducky and Ura scream internally. Ura’s own body had become the death trap that Haven had intended, her siblings had nowhere to go, they were trapped by the body that ironically was supposed to protect them. With one swipe of her right arm Haven disembowelled two of her siblings as they tried to climb over their mother’s tail. Blood drenched the ground and the two younglings fell back, one dead and the other convulsing violently.

“NO! STOP! NO!” Ducky screamed in her mind but her body would not respond, the only thoughts that controlled her body belonged to Haven. “This is to easy” she said as she kicked three of her siblings, her younger sister and brothers with her clawed foot, incapacitating each of them. The remainder of her siblings were now backed into the corner of their mother’s tail, the older children, Ducky’s clutch mates stood protectively in front of their younger siblings who were all crying and shivering.

Haven advanced her face drenched with blood in a terrible display of gore, her eyes glowing, the trap was flawless and her siblings were doomed with no way to escape their fates. However, Haven decided to be merciful in a playful Sharptooth way. “Alright then if you let me eat you without a fuss then I won’t tear you up before you go down” she started to laugh at the horrified looks from her siblings, she actually noticed that a few of them actually lied on the ground in submission.

“Pitiful” thought Haven.

“They are NOT! screamed Ducky her thoughts clashing directly with her alter Sharptooth personality.

“They are just as pitiful as you are, you can’t even control your own body” retorted Haven to Ducky, who's voice was chocked up from all the sobbing. Haven didn’t actually realise that Ducky’s tears were falling down her eyes now.

“Please leave them alone” begged Ducky.

“Shut it, beak face!” shouted Haven, she would not let Ducky’s sympathy keep her from surviving in a cruel world. “You are not me! You can’t tell me what to do! You are too weak to do what must be done, now if you’ll excuse me I am missing my dinner” Haven pushed Ducky to the back of her mind, she would not be distracted anymore.

The whole conflict had passed in a few growls from Haven’s throat as she stared down her terrified siblings. “Ducky, please no” sobbed one of her sisters. “Pleeeeaaaassse” The little Swimmer was begging for her life, laying on the ground with tears falling from her open eyes. It was a display that would have convinced any Leaf Eater to show mercy but not a Sharptooth. Haven lowered her head to the Swimmer and opened her mouth and licked her once. Her little sister looked a hopeful but that was crushed an instant later when Haven said “Tasty” Her tongue grabbed her sister and pulled her into her mouth and with one gulp she was gone.

“Who’s next?” said Haven who started to feast on her submissive siblings and dismembering all escapees which made up the majority of her siblings but there was nowhere to run too and took to long to climb over their mother tail, the other option would be a suicidal charge against a Fast Biter. Finally after a brutal massacre that drenched the scene with blood and entrails all that remained were two of her brothers and one of her sisters, her clutch mates.

They were all in fighting stances.

“You’re not Ducky! Get eaten by a Swimming Sharptooth!” yelled her enraged sister with tears streaming down her cheeks.

“You’ll…pay…for…this” said her brother in between breaths and sobs. They all charged at once intent on causing as much pain to this Fast Biter that had taken everything they had loved away. Haven raised her claw, she was about to bring it down when she stopped.

“You will not touch them!” yelled a sobbing Ducky, she could not bear it anymore she pushed everything in her will to stop Haven, after all this was her body too and she would not kill her own family. “You are not me and you will not harm my family no, no, no!”

“You will soon be me”Haven words exploded with the force of a bomb in Ducky’s mind, no, she could never become like this. She would never butcher her family, she was Ducky, not some heartless Fast Biter.

Crunch!

Ducky gasped as she felt pain in her legs as her siblings sank their teeth into her flesh. The next instant happened in a flash as Ducky slashed her claw down, her brothers stood no change and instantly fell to the ground their neck’s broken. Haven took advantage of Ducky’s horrified shock and quickly wrestled control back from Ducky, she was in control and no former Swimmer would tell her otherwise.

Ura gurgled and helplessly as she was forced to watch as her own daughter hunted down each of her children and slew them all and ate the remains. Suddenly as Haven sliced open the belly of her final remaining sister a terrible scream issued from her own mouth.

"NO! …. NO! ….. NOOOOOOOOO!" Ducky screamed at the top of her lungs and fell to the ground in a screaming and sobbed heap. What had she just done!? She had just killed her family without hesitation or mercy and she had made her mother watch it all. The taste of warm metallic blood filled her mouth and she was aware of the blood on her claws and face along with the feeling of fulness in her stomach where all her siblings now lie. Ducky felt sick she fell to her knees and promptly emptied all the contents of her stomach in a single bloody mess. Blood was now dripping down her jaws and intermingling with her tears as she stared at the horrendous sight in front of her.

"I am….I am a-a m-monster" said Ducky's mournful mind.

A terrible gurgle brought her back to reality and she turned around and sprinted to the fallen form of her mother. "Mommy- I…..no" she said weakly as the tears now blinded her eyes, making it impossible to see as she put a hand on her mother's convulsing body only to have it shoved off. Ducky blinked away her tears to see her mother staring at her with an expression that broke her heart. It was the same expression that the Mother Flyer had just before she died only it was worse, here in her mother's eyes she could see the betrayal and pain that she felt. She couldn't smell anything due to her nose being all runny and even if she could smell she only would have smelt the scent of death on her mother.

"I am so, so sorry" she sobbed.

You-" A loud gurgle followed Ura's words as she struggled to speak with blood now starting to drip into her lungs. "You are not…my…daughter…..Ducky….is dead…..you are….an evil…..monster" With one final bloody gurgle Ura's head dropped to the ground, her will to live gone, she resigned herself to her fate and death finally came for her. Ducky stood rock still as her mother's last words, her final condemnation echoed over and over in her head.

Ducky's eyes went wide her breathing became fast and shallow as she turned her head skyward and screamed her mother's last words to her. "I AM AN EVIL MOSTER!" she screamed feeling that these words were one hundred percent true, she had just done the unthinkable, she did not even deserve to live for this. One final scream of terrible pain issued from the poor Fast Biter's mouth and everything went black.

*

Everyone jumped awake, all weariness gone in an instant at the sound of their friend's scream. Everyone ran over to Ducky's screaming form as she suddenly gasped awake but she almost instantly closed her eyes and curled herself into a sobbing, trembling ball. She placed her hands over her nose and breathed through her mouth and kept her arms over her ears tightly in an attempt to block out all sound while she kept her eyes firmly closed. She spoke in a small terrified voice which grew louder every time she said the phrase which she repeated to herself over and over again. "I am not Haven, I am Ducky. I am not Haven, I am Ducky. I! ...AM! ...NOT! …HAVEN! …I! …AM! …DUCKY!" She screamed in despair.

The fact that Ducky was screaming this in a heartbroken voice as loud as she could without breaking her voice was horrifying enough. Her mournful shrieks even disturbed some of the local leaf eaters in close proximity to the cave and they recognised the voice as that of a Sharptooth but they could also hear the unrestrained emotion in the voice, it made more than one Longneck, Threehorn and Swimmer cringe. However, The Pack had yet to discover the worst part of Ducky's condition which mercifully didn't take long to see, it happened when Spike draped his arms around Ducky in a comforting fashion but Ducky's response alarmed everyone.

As soon as Ducky realised what was touching her she let out a scream of unrestrained terror and struggled away as if she was a Swimmer being chased by a Sharptooth once again. The scent of desperation, terror and heartbreak coming from Ducky was overwhelming. As soon as Ducky got free of her brother's stunned grasp she immediately curled up in the same position as she had before and continued to cry loudly.

"Ducky?" said Littlefoot in the most soothing tone he could offer even though he was disturbed by Ducky's reaction. Ducky clenched her elbows onto her ears even tighter, she could not bear to hear the sound nor feel the touch or see the sight of Fast Biters even if they were her friends. The dream had just pushed her over the edge and her rational mind was all but gone, consumed in despair and fear inequivalent to any other moment in her short life. She didn't want to be reminded in any way that she and her friends were all Sharpteeth now so she shrunk away from everything, sound, touch, sight and especially smell. She covered her nose with her hands and refused to use it. If she had she would have smelt the overwhelming concern and even fear from her friends. As it was when they realised that Ducky would not let any of them approach they all backed away with the exception of Spike who stayed as close to Ducky as she would allow with tears falling from his eyes at seeing his sister break down like this.

No one in the pack had any idea of what to do or how to comfort poor Ducky at the moment so they just watched in pained silence as their friend went through another fit of screaming. "What's wrong with her? Why won't she let us near her?" thought Cera, her mind on the verge of panic. Seeing one of the friendlies dinosaurs she knew fall to despair like this was torturous on a scale she never imagined. She looked desperately up at Littlefoot who in turn looked at Ruby their eyes meeting and passing through one thought simultaneously. "Chomper" Ruby went over to Chomper's side and gestured him forward.

Chomper looked uncertain but when he got the nod from Littlefoot as well he cautiously walked forward until he was standing right over the weeping Fast Biter. Chomper grimaced nervously as Ducky let out a particularly piercing cry, he carefully sat down beside her. "Calm down Ducky, your safe, we're all here" he said and carefully placed a hand on his friends back. A gesture Ducky accepted before getting up and promptly embracing Chomper in desperation and sobbing loudly into his shoulder. Chomper could only hold her and pat her back softly in response since he knew not what words to say.

Ducky's sobs slowly started to die down after she embraced Chomper, he was the only one she hadn't pushed away because he was still Chomper to her; he was a point of continuity and she clung to him as if her life depended on it. Finally, after Chomper's shoulders had grown tired of holding the weight of his friend, Ducky finally relented and pulled herself out of the embrace. Chomper still looked at her with concern as did all his friends. "Are you alright?" he asked quietly.

Ducky shook her head solemnly and looked at Chomper, hands trembled as she held his hands. "Thank you, Chomper" she said in a rather chocked up voice.

"That's what friends do" replied Chomper.

"Would you do something for me Chomper?" asked Ducky softly. Leaving everyone puzzled.

"Of course I would if it will help you" said Chomper.

Ducky nodded slowly then looked at him directly in the eyes, her gaze conveying sadness at a level Chomper could never comprehend or imagine. "I am scared-ed, promise me that you will do what I ask Chomper, please?" Ducky's grip on Chomper's hands tightened substantially making him wince slightly.

"I promise Ducky" he said.

Ducky gave him a sad smile as another solitary tear dropped from her eye. She loosened her hold on Chomper's hands but guided them up into a position that deeply alarmed him and his friends. Ducky placed his claws up against her throat and with a chocked voice Ducky said in the saddest voice any of them had ever heard.

"End it…Please"

Everyone let out a collective gasp of horror. No! They would not allow her to do this! Chomper shook his head firmly. "You promised" said Ducky in a deeply betrayed voice. Chomper tried to withdraw his claw but Ducky held it firmly to her neck, drawing a little blood. "Help me!" yelled Chomper internally looking at his friends who all got his non-verbal message and reacted in a flash, there was no way they would let Ducky do this. Cera jumped up right on top of Ducky from behind and flattened her to the ground while Littlefoot and Ruby ran to pin Ducky's arms to the ground. Cera got up and along with Spike pinned Ducky's legs and tail to the ground while Petrie flew on top of Ducky's neck and with the added strength of Chomper, managed to wrestle Ducky's head to the ground. After a moment of struggle in which Ducky tried to get up, her friends pushed her down hard to the ground so she couldn't move. Successfully pinned and unable to move Ducky let out another scream of pain that tore at all of their hearts.

"I AM A MONSTER!" she screamed at the top of her lungs. "I DO NOT WANT TO BE A SHARPTOOTH ANYMORE! I WANT TO BE A SWIMMER! I WANT TO GO HOME! I WANT TO SEE MY MOM!"

"Ducky calm down!" said Cera in alarm but Ducky didn't, she screamed again.

"I DO NOT DESERVE TO LIVE! I AM AN EVIL MONSTER! PLEASE END IT NOOOOWWW!" she shouted as she finally ran out of breath and let out dry sobs as she had no more tears to shed. Her whole body shivered violently after her outburst and her friends had to hold her body down tightly to stop her from causing any harm to herself.

It took several minutes but at last Ducky's trembling and sobbing finally ended and she was left taking in very shaky breaths. "You our friend Ducky, we never let anything bad happen to you" said Petrie as he draped a wing around his friend's head.

"Petrie's right, Ducky" said Ruby with firm conviction in her voice despite the tears falling down her face "and you are not a monster, you never were and none of us are either" Spike nodded and grunted affirmatively before nuzzling his sister's face a gesture which she thankfully accepted which to Spike was a good sign. To hear that Ducky wanted to end her life was a devastating announcement to them all but more to him than anyone else; she was his sister and he would die before he let anything happen to her.

"Why Ducky?" asked Cera. It was a question that they all wanted to know the answer to.

Ducky took a shuddering breath. "I had a sleep story, I was in The Great Valley in this form, I finded my family and I could talk leaf eater again." The friends exchanged sad glances, they all wished to be with their loved ones in The Great Valley again with Chomper and Ruby being the exceptions. "I told-ed my mom what happened to us but then Haven….I was Haven…..I attacked my mommy, I killed-ed and ated my brothers and sisters and my mom…" Ducky's breath was shallow and she was suffering more trembling fits as she struggled to regain her composure "just before she…died…she said that I was not her daughter, that I was an evil monster she did…she did" Ducky closed her eyes tightly and let out another long sob.

She didn't see her friends exchange pitied glances with each other, they all knew how she felt but it seemed that Ducky's limits were the first to break under the immense pressure that they were all under. "It wasn't real Ducky, it was just a sleep story" said Littlefoot gently into Ducky's ear.

"You no monster to us, you bestest friend" added Petrie with tears in his eyes.

"But I am…I killed-ed a Mama Flyer, what is to stop me doing the same to other mothers?" said Ducky, looking up at her friends. It was Petrie who landed in front of her and put his hand on her cheek.

"Me know you no want to kill Ducky none of us want to kill but you save Petrie's life when you stopped the Mama Flyer from attacking then you ended her pain Ducky, you were a Haven." Ducky looked up a little surprised by Petrie's choice of words "You save me, you end Mama Flyer's misery and reunited her with babies" said Petrie gently. "You no monster" he added, giving a questioning nod which Ducky gently returned. She now lay on the ground quite inert, even her breathing was coming back to a slow and steady rhythm despite her sadness.

"You won't try to hurt yourself if we let you go Ducky?" asked Littlefoot eventually.

Ducky sighed. "I will not, nope, nope, nope"

"Okay, let her up everyone" commanded Littlefoot. At once Ducky felt her body free of pressure and she sat up to look into Spike's concerned face. Ducky embraced him tightly and Spike returned her embrace as they both held on tightly to each other.

"Never scare me like that again Ducky" whispered Spike in Ducky's ear.

"Never again" confirmed Ducky in an answering whisper.

After ending the embrace Ducky was instantly smothered by the rest of her friends. "You are not a monster Ducky, you are no more a monster then any of us" said Littlefoot.

"That's reassuring" said Cera coldly. Littlefoot cast her a reproachful glare.

"You will always be our friend Ducky no matter what and you have as much right to live as anyone else" said Chomper.

"You are never alone" said Ruby.

They all broke out of their mass embrace and allowed Ducky to breath once more, she no longer had that haunted look in her eyes but appeared to be a little brighter "Thank you so much everyone" she said gratefully, she owed it to her friends for helping her see the light in the dark and saving her from needlessly throwing her own life away.

After a short breather Ducky finally worked up the courage to say what troubled her “I-I do not know who I am anymore no, no, no” she said sadly, for all she knew, she was just Ducky in Haven’s body but Haven’s dream comment about her becoming Haven still made her shiver with fear.

“Ducky, you are you. A friend, your just not a Swimmer anymore that’s the only difference, you will always be you as long as you remember who you were as a Swimmer” said Littlefoot in a consoling way. He knew that Ducky was finally starting to come to terms with their new life and just like he did, she would accept them in her own time.

“You are my sister, nothing will ever change that, Ducky” Spike held his sister’s hands tightly as the two exchange a brief nuzzle with each other.

“Thank you, but what if I end up like Haven in my sleep story?” asked Ducky in fear, she looked at them all with a pleading expression as if search for confirmation that this would never happen and Cera was quick to give it.

“You never will be Ducky as long as you remember….” Cera let out a deep sigh “Our old lives, you will never be a monster”

“Not to us, you our friend and friends look out for each other” said Petrie and on an unspoken cue he and everyone else crowded around Ducky, providing warmth and comfort that Ducky never realised they had been giving her just by being around.

For the first time in what felt like ages Ducky smiled, the same smile that once crossed the beak of a certain Swimmer that Ducky knew so very well. “Thank you everyone, I feel much betterer now I do, I do, I do” she said in a much lighter voice. Ducky knew that there would be doubtless more challenges ahead but now she was more certain than ever that she would face them with her friends. A few minutes later and Ducky was once again sleeping but this time peacefully and along with her friends all around her, even in sleep they provided a comforting presence and the last thought before Ducky embraced sleep was:

"I am not a monster and I am never alone no, no, no".

The Great Valley

Ura awoke with a gasp, breathing in hard and fast as she held a hand over her heart, a quick look at her children showed them all sleeping beside her safe and sound minus Ducky and Spike of course. Ura panted and look down with wide eyes as her mind replayed the terrible dream she just had. She had dreamed of Ducky coming home but it was not Ducky, it was a Sharptooth called Haven but it was also her daughter. She told her what happened to her and her friends but after an emotional reunion Ducky said she was hungry then she attacked her, she killed her children, she killed her.

It was the most chilling dream Ura had ever had. Nothing came close. Never had she ever pictured Ducky as a Sharptooth. The mere idea of that was completely ludicrous but the story Ducky told about what happened to her and her friends was also chilling but Ura refused to believe it, that could never happen to Ducky or Spike but the fact that Sharptooth Ducky attacked and killed her entire family was more terrible then all of it and what's worse it was in the form of that very Sharptooth that she had seen during that cursed night.

"Was that Sharptooth the one that…..?" Ura could not finish her sentence, it was hard enough to admit to herself that Ducky and Spike were really gone and thinking about their killers just made it worse.

"I'm so sorry Ducky and Spike" she sobbed once as she looked back down at their empty sleeping spot. Ura wished with all her heart that this had never happened, that she had not lost her dear children. She wished that she still had them right here with her but wishing would not bring them back and the cold hard fact was that they were not here, they were both dead. Gone. And they will never come back.

Ura lay her head back down but sleep did not come for her for a very long time but when it finally did her last thought was:

"Ducky, Spike whether you are, whatever you are, I will always love you no matter what. I miss you my dear little ones".

Ura finally fell into an uneasy slumber.

Well that's the end. I hope you enjoyed it, make sure to your post feedback, I found this story rather easy to right except for the slight difference between my name for Mama Swimmer and Rhombus. Anyway I hope this is a worthy spin off of The Seven Hunters.

LBT Fanfiction / Choices, entry for February writing challenge
« on: February 04, 2017, 07:52:14 PM »
Well I've finally come up with the start of my own story for this prompt challenge.

Choices

Prologue

What choice do I make? This is a situation I had never expected let alone prepared for.

I sigh and take a deep breath of the cool air; my father always said it that thinking constructively is best done when you are calm and I have found his wise words to be very true. I look out towards the setting Bright Circle which is painting the sky a beautiful orange-yellow hue. It is as beautiful as the sight below. The Great Valley: from my Thinking Place I can see much of The Great Valley. I can see the long, winding river and endless fields of green grass and trees. These are the most common colours in The Valley, blue and green. It is very different to The Mysterious Beyond where all you can see is bare rock most of the time but I remember the view from Hanging Rock. It was above Secluded Canyon which was basically an empty Valley with a lovely stream running through it that teemed with plenty of fish and the ground had a thin layer of grass and a few trees near the tall ragged cliffs. I close my eyes and remember the last time I saw that sight, the last time. It was with my friends Ducky, Spike and Chomper and my beloved family, it was the first time I had been with them for over a year and two seasons.

Another long sigh escapes my beak as I return to the moment, a brief look down at The Valley and I see each of my friends at their homes. Littlefoot is having dinner with Grandma and Grandpa at the top of a plain hill. I can see Cera tickling her little sister Tricia as she lies down on a small pile of leaves. This sight of tenderness is something that I don’t often see from Cera, she and I are usually competitive with each other but she is still my friend. Seeing this sight reminds me that she has a soft side behind that hard head of hers although I won’t exactly tell anyone that I’ve seen her; she’d ram me out of The Great Valley if I ever did that. The thought makes me chuckle but it is no less close to the way Cera would react if I told everyone she was really a sweet softie inside. It also reminds me of my younger brother and sister and the antics we would get up too.

Raising my head, I stretch my neck to get the stiffness out of my joints. After all, I have been here for a while now. As I am stretching my neck and arms out, my gaze falls on a ledge on the other side of The Valley. It is a nest made from sticks, sheltered under a large rock: this is Petrie’s home. I would recognise it anywhere since I along with Littlefoot and Chomper helped Petrie move there after his old nest was destroyed by a landslide during The Days of Rising Waters. I can’t quite see into the nest from this distance but I’ll bet Petrie and his family are having berries for dinner, Petrie would be pleased - after all, they are his favourite food.

Favourite foods; I can’t help but remember my last Star Day. My friends had gone out of the way to bring me my favourite food in a Giving Ceremony and although most of the sweet bubbles were crushed by the Earthshake, I can still remember the sweet taste of the few I did have. Looking down at The Valley I try to spy out my other remaining friends. My eye follows the river to one of the many waterfalls in on the side of the cliffs. It is here that I can spot my friends Ducky and Spike. Even though the whole family which is the largest in The Valley I think is present I still manage to spot Ducky because she is right next to Spike who is swallowing down mouth loads of tree stars down at once. I can’t help but laugh at the sight of Spike eating a bit of Ducky’s dinner while her back is turned.

Ducky’s mother is easy to spot since she towers over all of her children; she was very kind to me earlier today when I asked for a talk with her. I didn’t know who else to turn to, as I am so used to taking my own counsel or my family’s but I have no answers for the problem I was presented with and her advice was really helpful. Ducky and Spike are lucky to have such a compassionate and thoughtful mother.

With a huff I push myself away from the edge of the cliff that I was sitting on. I suppose that’s why I made this cliff my Thinking Place, because it reminds me of home and the view from Hanging Rock. I stand on my long strong legs and look down towards my left and see a large opening in the rock which I have walked through plenty of times before for it is the entrance to The Secret Caverns which has been Chomper’s sleeping place as well as mine since we moved to The Great Valley. I can see him waiting just outside the cave. I may not be able to see his expression from here but I can tell simply by looking at his agitated stance that he is worried, probably because I haven’t come back yet but after the events of today I don’t really want to go back down there. Our relationship is more than just a simply friendship or a caregiver now and that has been a major headache for me today. For all this time I had looked after Chomper and I have found that he is such a sensitive boy even though he is a Sharptooth, but I have looked out for him almost as if I was playing the double role of friend and mother. His announcement might have not been so bad if I only ëhe’ hadn’t have shown up.

My gaze falls down to another clearing a short distance from The Secret Caverns and there is only one dinosaur present there and he is not what most people would expect to see here in The Great Valley, the land of plant eaters, because like me, he is a Fast Runner. He is a bright purple Fast Runner and an old friend of mine that I haven’t seen since my earlier childhood years. His name is Cayne and he and Chomper are the source of all my troubles on this fine spring day.

I turn back on The Valley as twilight falls and the land is shrouded in darkness. I make my way into the cave behind me. I was once trapped in here on my Star day but ever since my friends pushed the boulder out of the way and then later going through the lengths to push it off the cliff entirely I have been able to access it easily. I lie down on the ground and put my head on the ground, I will be sleeping here for the foreseeable future since I have no desire to go down to The Secret Caverns or outside. Even though Chomper is worried, I am sure that he knows I would never do anything dangerous or foolish without a good reason and that is not what I have now. I feel almost selfish about my actions here but I can’t stay near Chomper tonight. Too much has happened and I need time to take it all in and reflect on the day I have just been through. Still it would be courteous to tell him that I won’t be sleeping down in The Caverns with him tonight, maybe the night air might even calm my hyperactive mind.

I get up from my prone position and slowly walk out into the night. Looking up at the sky I see a beautiful Night Circle at its fullest and all the lesser lights shining brightly. I remember Mr Thicknose said that if you look closely enough at the right places you’ll see the outlines of different dinosaurs in the sky; these places are The Great Beyond for each of the different dinosaur kinds. I haven’t seen any Fast Runner shape up there but I’m sure that I’ll find it up there one day after all there are so many of these lights that there couldn’t be one that is not shaped like a Fast Runner. Besides if there wasn’t, then we Fast Runners would have no Great Beyond to go to when we pass away.

In the meantime I contemplate what will happen when I inevitably meet Chomper. I know that there is a choice that I must make soon, a very important one, but I don’t know what to do and my feelings on the matter are such jumble that I don’t know what they mean. How am I going to make the best of this particular situation when I have no idea what to do? My heart and feelings are jumbled but my head has a commitment and a course but until I hear what my heart is saying then I can’t decide or I would be heartless.

As I walk slowly down the path from my Thinking Place and down towards The Secret Caverns, my mind plays over the events of the day and at first it amazes me how normal the day started out before it became an abnormal, ridiculous and heart dividing day, as I suppose if I wanted to properly analyse what happened today then I must start at the beginning. Suddenly I start wishing that I hadn’t left my thinking place as my mind starts processing today’s happenings from the moment I woke up........

Well there's the prologue, hope you enjoyed and be sure to feedback. I'll have the next chapter up soon.

LBT Projects / LBT Fanfiction readings on YouTube
« on: November 23, 2016, 07:15:22 PM »
Hi all I had this idea for a while now and I think others have too. I was thinking that perhaps we could do YT videos of us members reading other members fanfictions. It would be a good way to help get more opinion on our stories as well as increase their popularity. Here you can put down if you want you're LBT fanfic read on YT, I think it would be better to have another person aside from the author to read their own works though. So I think this is a good idea and has a YT channel (I don't at the moment) and wants their Fanfic read (I certainly do) then we can do all the organising here in this thread. Anyone interested?

LBT Fanfiction / LBT Hatchling Series
« on: October 08, 2016, 08:44:23 PM »
Hi all, anyway I have decided to write the hatch days of our Gang, based on the ideas posed in The LBT authors Q&A, started a couple of days ago in a power outage to keep from getting bored and now I want to finish the series. This series will focus on each of The main character's first days as a hatchling. I might do 2-3 days for each character or just their hatching days. However I would to be advised if anyone wants me to write more then a day after I have finished writing.

The series will go in order of age (or at least my thoughts on age so the order will be:

Ducky
Ruby
Cera
Littlefoot
Petrie
Spike
Chomper

Also word of warning this story will show newborn hatchlings relieving themselves at some points, also in terms of Ducky's siblings and parents from the first story I'll be using my OC's from The Swimmer Trials. Anyway hope you enjoy the first story of the series. Oh and please don't forget to post any feedback or constructive criticism you might have. Thank you.

Here's there first story.

LBT Hatchling Series: Story 1

Ducky’s First Day

She opened her eyes and yawned, she felt tired as if she had only just woken up from a deep sleep but that drowsiness did not last long as she was confronted by so many things, well it was actually rather familiar to her now, the constant rhythmic beating noise that was actually her heart that felt every one of her waking hours. The warm gooey substance that she was bathed in, that felt really soft on the skin, it was actually a pleasant feeling for her and it didn’t taste too bad so when she was hungry she’d just slurp it down her throat. The same warm smell of mucus and yolk was present in the air and the sight was the same as it had always been. A smooth, hard barrier that her whole body was encased it, however she could see the light outside it whenever she was awake and every now and then a shadow would be cast down over the barrier but usually it was unrecognisable and there were some occasions were all she could see was black and no light at all, those times always made her shiver in fright as she didn’t like the dark. Through the dim light that penetrated the barrier she could see herself or at least some of herself, her legs, arms, the whole front of her body and tail but she could not see her own head or back, they were a light green colour and whenever she would touch the barrier or some new part of herself she’d squeak in excitement especially when she was feeling her head with her hands, she could feel her beak and nose and crest when she did that.

The sounds that she perceived were the most different, she could hear her own voice and knew that was her but sometimes she would hear another squeaks that sounded similar to hers and it aroused her curiosity, she’d wag her tail with excitement and notice how her hole small world would wobble, she did that every now and then as she really liked how it felt. But what really aroused her curiosity was the sounds outside the barrier, if there even was an outside. The sounds were now rather familiar to her now and comforting, the sound of flowing water, the blowing of a wind but what would make her feel best was when she heard the deeper but soft voice of something big and that really made her curious and excited. Sometimes the sound was excited, sometimes there was more than one, one was soft, the other was deep but no less gentle. However, it was the soothing humming noises and the occasional song from the soft voice that she really loved, it made her feel very happy and completely safe, whenever she heard that voice she would always place her ear to the edge of the barrier so she could hear the sound better. She had been in here for so long now that she had actually been contemplating what to call her but she had no knowledge of words or language but there was one instinctual sound that came to mind and she said it slowly, in a whisper in different ways until it rolled off her tongue easily and just saying that word would make her feel comforted and sometimes her small world be gently nudged or nuzzled but something unknown but the gentle voice outside reassured her that everything was okay.

However, if there was one thing that she did not like about her small world was that she could not stretch out her legs or tail or hands and neck, she just stayed in a tightly curled ball all the time, she wondered of her world was getting smaller because it felt like there was less room in it each day and when she closed her eyes and slept she would sleep for ages until she woke again. Finally, however as her tiny world was gently nuzzled again and the gentle hum the she had come to love so much was heard right above her she couldn’t take it anymore. She wanted out, seeing her feet in front of her she started shaking her body as hard as she could and hitting the edges of her little world as hard as her strength of her tiny body allowed her. She kicked out at the bottom of her world with her legs again and again, trying desperately to get through the barrier, she squeaked loudly in frustration, the voices outside became hushed and excited as if a special event was about to take place, but she didn’t care at that moment she wanted to get and see the noise makers and any other new thing that might be out there.

Finally, after so much kicking she gave one last powerful kick and suddenly with a loud ëCrack!’ both her feet went through the barrier. She was instantly assaulted by bright light that made her feel warm and extremely excited. She tried to squeeze her beak through the gaps but instead hit the barrier between her legs, she pushed at it with her head and felt the barrier bending, her heart was beating with excitement as she finally burst her head through the barrier and onto the other side. The light momentarily blinded her so she closed her eyes, when she opened them slowly her vision was a little blurred as she was not used to seeing in this kind of light. She stretched her tail out and felt it break through the other end of her egg. She was hardly aware of the seven other eggs that were now rocking around beside her as she caught sight of a little flying thing that hovered in the air above her head, maybe that is what made all the gentle noises while she was inside the egg. She reached out to the strange creature with both of her tiny arms extended and opened her mouth wide in a quiet squeak. However, she stretched herself out way too far and began rolling down the slope of the nest, still half trapped in her egg.

She stopped on a small pile of dust and squeaked cutely as the little flying creature made its way over her again she reached out her arms but her egg was still spinning on the spot and she couldn’t keep her balance she gently fell onto the soft ground looking mildly annoyed. Then she felt a little stinging spot on her head as the mosquito bit her. She did not like the feel and with a little struggling she righted herself and charged after the little annoying flying thing, that did not make lovely noises but instead made stinging feelings. She hopped after the little creature as fast as her egg would allow, through a hollow log and out the other end but there was a short drop on the other side and as she fell to the ground the egg shattered beneath her, freeing her entire body. It was a new sensation to finally be in the open and not cramped up inside her egg and as much as she liked being in her small little world, she liked being outside it even more.

There was a small rustle as she caught sight of another strange creature, a small furry thing with four legs and long white thin stickily things sticking out of the side of its face (whiskers) and it had not noticed her. Jumping up onto a small stick pointing diagonally out of the ground, she looked down upon the creature with intense curiosity, it was not making the same noises she heard in the egg but it did look nice. Her tail wagged with excitement as she pounced onto the furry things soft back however she fell off as the furry creature took flight but she pushed herself up and remembering how she was like, as she hopped in the egg, she placed one foot in front of the other instinctually and she did it as fast as she could so that she was running almost as fast and she loved the experience.

However, her run was not to last as she didn’t really know how to turn so while the rat skidded past a large foot she went straight into it, but not so hard that it hurt, she fell on her tail and looked around, her vision was no longer blurry and she could see so many things that were completely new to her. Suddenly there was a large movement right next to her as a large creature with a smooth, but hard back and an ugly snout looked down at her and opened his mouth in front of her.

She was curious at the opening and wondered what was inside and whether this thing wanted her to go inside, so she got to her feet and started to climb into the snapping turtle’s mouth, she put her hands on the slimy tongue and felt the rasp of warm breath coming up to meet her nose as she gazed into the depths of his maw, not knowing that she was in mortal danger. Then all of a sudden she felt something close down on her tail and the next second everything was rushing backwards as the turtle snapped his jaws shut one second too late.

Now the little Swimmer was surprised she was dangling from her tail every high above the ground, from here she could see lots of things that she could not see before from her elevation, the river, and the reeds and lots more things but her chief interest was to what was holding onto her tail. She looked up and down and beheld a huge brown body, with two legs and a tail she looked up and saw a neck and the bottom of a large beak that was currently holding her tail, the massive creature had arms like hers too and had a warm feel to it. Then that was when she heard the creature sigh in relief and that’s when she realised that she recognised that voice, it was the voice that hummed to her in her small enclosed world. She immediately felt affection for this giant being and said the name that she had come up for her while she was still inside her small world. “Mama?” she asked.

She could not see her mother’s eyes widen in astonishment as she said that from her position but she did feel her move slowly, turning around and heading back the way she had come, what was a lot of steps for the little Swimmer was actually only a few steps for her mother. She came back to the nest and from her tiny daughter’s height she could see her father, the nest that was filled with her newly hatched brothers and sisters. She squeaked in excitement and wagged her tail, or at least tried to as she saw all these similar looking creatures. They looked up at her in equal curiosity as her mother slowly and carefully lowered herself to the ground and then placed her little one back into the nest with her siblings.

As she was placed in the nest she looked back and saw her mother’s loving face smiling back at her, then her dark green sister opened her beak next to her and she did the same, their beaks coming together with their mouths open for a short time. She was so excited and she really loved these small creatures that looked so much like her. Suddenly her mother pressed her muzzle beneath her chin and hummed warmly and she hummed with her contently, she loved her and she loved the new feeling of being nuzzled. Finally, her mother broke off and looked at her with an expression filled with the same unconditional love as her daughter had for nearly everything she rested her eyes upon.

“Hello, my little Ducky” she said to her and gave her a lick with her tongue causing Ducky to laugh as she experienced being tickled for the first time. She didn’t know what her mother had said but the words touched her heart and she loved her with all her heart as both her mother and father were now nuzzling her and her clutch mates. When she heard her father’s deep voice she knew who it was and lovingly hugged his beak and said the word that she had found for him “Dada” Her father’s eyes widened in astonishment while her mother smiled lovingly as they both nuzzled her. When they broke off Ducky looked around at her siblings with excitement and curiosity. She touched her identical twin Opal while her sister hugged her and she hugged back and the light brown Swimmer Echo was the first boy to touch her. He squeaked at her curiously but Ducky nuzzled him just as she had seen her parents do to her and Echo nuzzled her back, she loved him already, she loved her new family.

It was at that moment that Echo was lifted into his mother’s arms along with his dark brown brother Rapid and his sister Opal their mother took them to a small pond of crystal clear water and placed them all into the pond. They immediately started swimming and splashing around in the water in utter enjoyment.

Ducky and her other siblings. Her dark green sister. Her light green, mustard coloured brother. Her light yellow and red sister and her brown and aqua green brother who was a spitting image of his father, light brown on the back and an aqua green on his belly. All crowded close to the ridge of the nest overlooking their two brothers and sister. However, the red Swimmer had stretched herself out to far and suddenly found herself sliding down the slope of the nest and into the sand on the bank of the small pond.

The little hatchling squeaked in joy and started rolling around in the sand, getting it all stuck to her yolk covered body, of course Ducky’s body had some dust encrusted on it but it was nothing like her sister who was rolling around in the sand in joy.

“You’re a playful little girl aren’t you Sandy” said her mother and proceeded to lightly tickle her daughter’s belly with one of her fingers. Sandy burst into laughter as her body registered the tickling sensation, she held out her little arms to her mother and closed both her hands around one of her mother’s fingers. Her mother smiled warmly and hoisted her up and gently placed her into the water of the pond with her brothers and sister.

Suddenly there was a loud cry from the nest as the aqua green Swimmer rolled down the slope after sticking himself out to far. He rolled up into the air and splashed down into the water looking awfully dizzy but no less proud of himself for getting in the water. “Nice move Spinner” said his father as he nuzzled him contently before allowing his son to break off and play in the water with his siblings.

Next it was Ducky’s last two siblings the dark green girl and the light green, mustard boy to be taken out of the nest. The dark green girl was simply trembling with excitement, so much so that as her father arrived at the pond she leapt out of his hands and performed a perfectly straight dive that would have got her a 10/10 at the Olympics. “Diver, you little rascal” said her father, Ruphus as he scrubbed some excess sand off of Diver’s back then he brought the little boy in his arms to his mate. “What shall we name him?” he asked her.

His mate, Sura thought for a moment before nuzzling her little son “You’re my little Ray” she said in a loving voice, her son squeaked happily, enjoying the affection of his mother. She broke off and placed him in the water with his brothers and sisters and began to splash around happily. Now Ducky was the only one left in the nest.

She watched her siblings playing with excitement, she was practically jumping with excitement, she wanted join them, it looked so fun, she was about to run down the slope herself when another gentle voice caught her attention. “Hello little one” she turned to see her aunt for the first time, she was startled by how similar she looked to her mother but her voice was different to her mother but it was indeed familiar. Ducky got to her feet and ran up to her aunt, who was surprised at seeing Ducky running at that moment as newborn hatchlings didn’t run or talk really for that matter. However, she quickly returned Ducky’s hug by nuzzling her and placing a hand around her and hugging her to her beak. Ducky felt her aunt’s beak, it was smooth and warm under her hand and she loved how it felt when she was nuzzled.

“That’s Ducky” said Sura to her almost identical twin sister, Merri as she had heard her arrive.

“Oh you are beautiful aren’t you” said Merri as she tickled Ducky’s belly with her finger. Ducky fell on her back and laughed like crazy, she coiled up and wagged her tail in a berserk fashion. She grabbed her aunt’s hands and held them, she smiled up with a look that conveyed utter love and innocence in its purest of forms. Her aunt lifted her into her arms and took her over to the pond and gently placed her in the water where Ducky began to swim, splash and play alongside her brothers and sisters contently.

The adults watched the newborns play with loving smiles on their faces. This was in no doubt the most precious moment that they had ever witnessed and they would treasure it for the rest of their lives. “They’re so beautiful aren’t they” stated Merri.

“Yes, yes they are” said Sura who was beaming in utter joy, she could hardly believe that she was now a mother and that Ruphus was now a father and one thing was for sure, that they would both die before they saw their beautiful little babies come to harm.

Ducky was having so much fun, while running required more of an effort swimming was felt completely effortless to her, she was completely at home in the water and found joy in the splashing games she played with her siblings. She didn’t realise how much time had passed but pretty soon she felt her throat becoming all dry and her stomach started doing something that she never expected; it started rumbling and it wasn’t just hers either but her other siblings as well. Ducky looked down at her belly curiously and touched it where she felt the rumbling, puzzling over the sound but with the sound came a feeling of emptiness, for the first time she was hungry.

She squeaked for attention and opened her mouth, in her little world she had a source of food but out here she didn’t know what to eat. Her siblings were also making similar gestures and squawks, this roused both their parents.

“Oh, sounds like they’re hungry” said Ruphus.

“Could you get me some of the river food Merri?” asked Sura, his sister nodded and walked off to the river while Sura took Ducky, Rapid, Spinner and Sandy in her arms. Ruphus took Opal, Echo, Diver and Ray and placed them back in the nest. Sura gave her little ones a gentle nuzzle while they were in her arms. Spinner held his arms out for more but his mother was already placing them down into the nest.

“Here you go Sura” said Merri handing some stands of aquatic plants that were completely drenched to her sister, they had been pulled from the river and would satisfy the hatchlings hunger and thirst.

Ruphus also took a mouthful of underwater green food and started munching on it in front of the kids while Sura held the first strand river weed in her right hand. “Alright little ones, now who’s hungry?” she asked as she placed the first strand down into the nest. Ducky walked up to the strand and sniffed it curiously, she saw her father eating the same stuff so this was definitely food. Sticking her tongue out Ducky licked the plant and gasped as her taste buds fired off, she really liked the taste and picked up the strand and out some in her mouth and started to chew.

Since hatchling Swimmers didn’t really have proper teeth developed until after the first two to three days, she took her time in eating the green food, swallowing the fluids it released and finally swallowing her meal. She noted that her stomach stopped rumbling and she felt much better but she still felt hungry and started to eat another strand while her siblings joined in, apparently motivated by their father and sister’s example.

Ducky opened her mouth wide when there were no more strands left and looked pleadingly at her mother and squeaked for more. “Okay little ones” said her mother and gave her children a second helping of the river weed. The children made short work of their meal and as Ducky finished her meal she looked where her father was getting some more of the underwater green food and with an excited squeak she jumped out of the nest and landed by the water’s edge, she heard her mother exclaim something but it hardly registered as she poked her head into the water and gazed around. The pond she had played in before was relatively featureless but the river was teeming with life, from plants and insects to larger fish. She gasped in amazement and swallowed a whole load of water. Ducky surfaced in surprise but the water felt good to drink so she took a few more gulps of water and noted how her once dry throat became nice and moist again and no longer hurt whenever she used her voice.

Ducky looked up and found her mother holding onto her tail just in case her daughter had decided to jump into the river. Her mother shook her head in a negative way. Ducky looked down, had she upset her mother? A tear appeared on her cheek, her mother brushed it off and gave her a gentle nuzzle which made Ducky feel much better as her mother picked her up and placed her back in the nest.

“She is going to be a handful” observed Ruphus.

“I know” said Sura “and I can’t believe she can already run and talk” she said in amazement.

Ruphus nodded in agreement. “We are going to have to keep an extra big eye on her” he said as he gazed back at the nest to see the siblings squeaking to each other and Ducky standing up and actually grabbing Echo’s hand and pulling him up onto his shaking feet, Echo squeaked in triumph, he wore a big smile on his face, however he quickly lost his balance and fell back on his tail.

“You might have to keep an eye on more than just one child Sura” warned Merri.

Sura however was smiling as Ducky tried to help her brother and sisters to stand and walk and while it was not working very well she couldn’t help but feel touched by Ducky’s actions. “Ducky is such helpful little one isn’t she?” she stated.

“And adventurous” added her mate.

“They are going to grow up to be fine young ones” said Sura as she nuzzled her mate. It was a yawn from Ducky that caught their attention, she had finally exhausted herself, she didn’t realise that most of her sibling were already drifting off to sleep. Her eyes felt droopy as well as heavy and she knew what would happen but this time she could finally rest her body out unlike when she was still inside her own little world. She lay on her belly next to her siblings and yawned again, looking very drowsy.

Her mother gently nuzzled her children and hummed a quiet calming tune to her little ones. Ducky smiled at the sound of her mother, a reassuring sign that she would always be with her. Ducky finally allowed her eyes to close taking her into a deep sleep.

*

Sura couldn’t help but wonder if her mother, if all mothers felt like this when they watched their own children hatch, she had seen many hatchings before and they were all very special and she had babysat many of the kids in the herd to prepare herself for this day but there was something infinitely more special about seeing her own babies hatch, these were her own flesh and blood and they were more beautiful than anything she had ever seen. The love they showed was completely unconditional and Sura had rarely known anyone who could show that much love and even if they could show that much love, they still lacked the raw innocence of her newborns. Rupgus for example always showed her love but he was far from innocent having lost family members to Sharpteeth and having himself been in battle with sharpteeth on more than one occasion. That was why this hatching was so special because here she had kids in their purest state and it melted her heart with love. She resolved to be there for them, always and be the best parent she possibly could for them, for her children.

Sura wasn’t aware of how much time had passed since her little ones fell asleep as she was hooked to their rhythmic breathing, Sandy shivered softly as she rolled on her back away from her siblings but Rapid nuzzled up to her side and she started sleeping soundly again. A tear of happiness fell down Sura’s eye when she saw that simple demonstration of compassion from her dear son. She felt like she could stay in this moment forever but no matter how much she wished that, time still continued to and fly by early afternoon just after The Bright Circle had reached its full height the little ones started to stir and wake up again.

Ducky opened her beak wide and yawned and slowly opened her eyes to see the nest and her siblings, it took only a second for her to realise that she was not in her small world as she had been the last time she had woken up but was instead in a whole new world filled with so much to see and do. She looked up at the blue sky and strained her eyes as a large yellow ball in the sky blazed overhead creating lots of light from its rays. She turned her head away as her eyes got a little sore and they fell on her mother.

“Mama!” she cried happily jumped to her feet.

If Sura was not sure that he daughter could speak before then she was sure now, there was no mistaking what Ducky had said and it made her feel very different, she had always been referred to by name but now she was referred to as a mother. It made for a real sense of achievement in her to finally had her own babies come into the world, they were hers to look after and she would not allow any challenge to stop her from being there for her children.

“Hello Ducky, sleep well?” she asked gently, she held out her finger which her daughter grabbed with both hands and nuzzled it contently, she looked up at her mother with wide eyes filled with compassion and an incredible curiosity. “She is so cute” thought Sura. She then saw her other children stir awake. She nuzzled each one gently and said their names as she did so, they all opened their mouths and gave another plead for food which their mother obliged too as well as filling a few tree stars with water for the children to drink.

After eating and drinking the babies started play with each other in the nest, this play mainly was just hand play or an occasional tumbling over each other and a little tickling. Sandy was tracing her finger through the dust of the nest in a whole lot of squiggles, she appeared to be really enjoying. Spinner and Ray were tumbling over each other in what like a game of tag in its infancy, they crawled around after each other and jumped on each other and gave each other a tickle. Opal and Diver were engaged with hand play, they grabbed small debris around the nest to look at it, they each took it in turns to touch every inch of each other and occasionally making a high five with the other. Echo was also curious he was scrutinizing everything he got his hands on with a powerful intensity, putting a rock up to his ears, tasting it and puzzling over what it was and what it was for. Ducky meanwhile was helping Rapid stand on his two legs. He gave a happy squeak when he finally stood without Ducky’s help.

His mother nuzzled him and he hugged her beak but after the contact was over he fell onto his belly and squeaked in frustration, pounding his little arms on the ground. Ducky hugged her brother as if it was the cure to all ailments.

She broke off and stood on her own two feet and noted her father on the other side of the nest giving Sandy a tickle. Ducky wanted to feel that too and took only a step forward when something very unexpected happened that made Ducky squeal in surprise and her siblings to gasp at her in startled shock and amazement.

Ducky looked down on the ground behind her and at her tail to see what looked to her like yellow water trickling into the nest but that was not what shocked her, it was the fact that the source of this phenomenon was herself, it was coming out of the opening in her tail. Ducky raised her tail in order to get a better look but in doing so accidentally getting her brothers Rapid and Echo wet. Echo looked very curious, this water actually felt much warmer then the water he had taken a drink from before, perhaps it tasted just as good too. Echo licked his hand which had a few drops of the yellow substance his sister was creating and spluttered in disgust, the taste was awful and Spinner evidently didn’t like the smell of it either as he put a hand over his nose so he could stop the smell.

“Oh dear” said their mother in alarm as Ducky wet the nest, the puddle expanded around the nest and engulfing her siblings and reducing the ground to mud and with Ducky holding up her tail her siblings were getting sprayed. “Tail down dear” she said and gently placed Ducky’s tail in a down position and held it there till Ducky was done.

“Ruphus!” called Sura.

Her mate rushed to her side and saw what the trouble was, the nest was now a muddy bog. “What happened?” he asked.

“Ducky wet the nest” said Sura. They both exchanged a quick nod.

“Merri?!” called Sura to her sister who was currently on watch duty, because their nest was further away from the herd there was a constant watch for any Sharpteeth that might come around and just a few days ago one did. The Great Sharptooth himself and he had ravaged the herd, killing adults and children and destroying nests. Out of the fifteen nests that there were in the herd only three of them had survived including Sura’s.

Merri appeared from the bushes a short distance away. “What is it Sura?” she asked in concern.

“Could you dig a round scrape for the kids, this nest is not useable now” said Sura. Merri saw what Sura meant and started digging a shallow scrape in the ground, close to the nest. Meanwhile Sura and Ruphus lifted their little ones out of the muddy nest and into the pond and began to wash the children thoroughly as their feet were caked with the dark mud. Ducky allowed her mother to bathe her though she was looking at her tail all the time as if the yellow water would suddenly come out again. Her mother lifted her head up with her finger and said: “Don’t worry dear, everybody does it.”

Sura finished bathing the kids just as Merri finished digging the scrape for the hatchlings. Sura and Ruphus placed their children in the scrape. “We should have remembered to put the leaves on the bottom of the nest” said Ruphus, inwardly cursing his clumsiness. “Now we have to wait till the nest dry’s” he said sighed.

Sura nodded and looked down at the babies in the small scrape, looking curiously at their parents and the new scrape. However, it would take a repeat of the same mistake for the two new parents before they got it correct as Ducky suddenly felt something travel through her and instinctively pushed, relieving herself where she stood. “Oh no, not again” said Ruphus as the new scrape was quickly fouled by Ducky who was now gazing curiously at her own excrement, though she kept her distance because the unpleasant smell, while her siblings started wetting, she was amazed that these things came out of her and wondered what they were. However, she didn’t have much time for pondering as her parents took her and her siblings for another bath.

This time after bathing the children there was no room to build another scrape and what’s worse was the dark clouds gathering from above them that signalled the coming of a storm. Sura placed her huge body beside her children, the ground beside her body was covered in leaves in case of anymore incidents it had already caused more than enough trouble today. Sura made sure that the leaves were dry so her children had no motivation to eat them. The children were huddling close to her belly where it felt warm and comfortable. Ducky even climbed up her mother’s tail and onto her back, she didn’t stay up there for too long before her father picked her up and gently nuzzled her.

“Oh little Ducky, you don’t want to fall of your mother back now do you” he said and gently placed her down with her siblings just as the first rains start to fall. Sky water was something completely new to the little ones and it astonished them, they gasped in awe at seeing water falling from the sky. Ducky gasped and looked up at the sky and immediately blinked as some sky water fell into her eyes, she wasn’t afraid of it, rather she was enchanted by the mystery of where the water was coming from. She hardly noticed the lightning flash in the distance but to her eyes the water seemed to be coming from the large dark puffy things floating in the sky. Another flash of lightning lit up the land, this time it was in plain sight of Ducky and her siblings and they gasped as the clouds were lit up with a light blue light however their fascination was quickly replaced by fear when the inevitable thunder that follows the lightning made itself known.

Ducky screamed and jumped in fright when she heard the thunder, there were also similar response’s from her siblings and suddenly the rain started pouring down on them. Sura quickly put a broad leaf over her frightened hatchlings so as to keep them warm and dry. Ducky latched onto the first person she was next to: Ray and he held tightly to her as they both shivered in fright. Ducky had no idea where the thunderous noise was coming from but it was huge and loud and it scared her. She ran up to her mother’s warm body and curled up in fright, she now recognised that the thunder followed the white flashes of light in the sky. She closed her eyes tightly and shivered, however when a large flash of lightning struck close by the rolling thunder was instant and deafening.

Ducky blocked her ears with her hands and screamed then she started to cry, she didn’t really care about the tears she was producing, she was just too scared. The reaction from her siblings mirrored her own as well. Sura wrapped her tail around her little ones and placed her head right next to the leaf and allowed her children to huddle, cuddle and hold onto her beak for comfort. Ducky quickly ran to her mother’s beak, embraced it and sobbed in fright. Her mother nuzzled her and all her little ones and started humming a calming tune to help keep her children from getting to scared and it worked a bit, her children noticeable calmed down.

Ducky was so relieved to hear her mother’s calming voice, it was a sign that she was right next to her and that she would be safe, she felt that her mother would protect her from any storm, as she was with them, she knew everything after all and Ducky trusted her completely. “Mama” she said gently and hugged her mother’s beak in thanks.

“I am here, little ones” said their mother in a soothing voice “and I will never leave you”

Ducky smiled, the storm no longer seemed frightening to her, as long as her mother was around and as if on cue the storm almost as quickly as it had begun suddenly ended, the clouds parted allowing The Bright Circle to shine down upon the land. Sura took the leaf off her little ones. Ducky smiled at the sight of The Bright Circle, she was sure her mother had made all those scary lights and noises go away, she hugged her beak in thanks and let out a content sigh.

Suddenly the ground jolted, small rocks were tossed around as the sound of footsteps approached and a short time later it was followed by a feminine voice. “Sura?! Ruphus?!”

”Is anybody there?!” called a much younger male voice.

Sura’s face brightened. “Over here guys!” she called.

A few seconds later a dark green adult female Swimmer appeared with a little light green boy of about five years old walking beside her, they both looked relieved to see her and Ruphus. However, because of the angle they could not see the babies looking curiously around for the source of the noise on the other side of Sura’s massive bulk.

“Hello Ellie and hello there little Elliot” said Sura to the two approaching Swimmers.

“Oh thank goodness” said Ellie in relief. “We haven’t heard from you since the attack” she explained.

“We were worried about you” said Elliot, he one of the children that Sura regularly babysat and he had grown rather fond of her. He was rather mature for his age having seen and been in situations that no youngling his age should see and he had survived Sharptooth’s attack.

“We’re fine dears” said Sura politely.

“How are the eggs?” asked Ellie.

“Well…” said Ruphus but he needn’t have explained anymore as Ducky made herself know, having located where the noise was coming from she jogged past her mother’s bulk and stopped next to her mother’s head in plain view of the newcomers whom she gazed at very inquisitively, she cocked her head to the side.

The newcomers however gasped at the sight of Ducky.

“Is she…?” asked Ellie letting the question hang in the air.

Sura smiled warmly at her “This is my little Ducky” she said and gestured for them to come closer. “Come around the other side and you can see the rest of my little ones”

Ellie nodded, looking delighted “I didn’t know you children were this old Sura” too which Sura laughed.

“They only hatched today dear” she chuckled.

Ellie looked surprised as she looked at Ducky “She must be very advanced for her age” she thought to herself as she walked around Sura’s bulk along with her son. It was there that she beheld the little hatchlings. Her heart melted on sight “Awwww, they’re so cute” she said sweetly “Hello little ones.”

Elliot smiled at seeing the children but then found Ducky walking up to him, she looked at little hesitant. She didn’t know who this was, she had not seen him before though and she wondered who it was and how it was that size. She sniffed him and touched his hand. “Hello” Elliot said in a voice softer then he was accustomed to using “I’m Elliot” he said, putting his hand on his chest. Ducky squeaked a welcome and suddenly hugged him before excitedly grabbed his hand and led him to her siblings before Elliot could do anything as he was still surprised about Ducky’s hug. The children all gathered Elliot, touching him and squeaking inquisitively to him.

“Wow, they are gorgeous” commented Ellie.

“Yes they are” agreed Ruphus who chuckled as Elliot was assaulted by the curious pokes and prods of his children.

“Feel like a swim Elliot?” he asked.

“Yes please” said Elliot in a respectable voice.

“Come alone little ones, Elliot’s going to swim with you” said Sura.

“Huh!?” said Elliot in surprise, suddenly taken back but it was too late to back out now as Sura moved her children into the pond. Elliot sighed. “Go on Elliot” said his mother. Elliot braced himself and walked into the water with the hatchlings. However, it was not as bad as he expected, on the contrary it was actually quite fun as he swam and splashed with the hatchlings, his mother chuckled at the scene as Elliot’s inner child was finally released as he started to really get involved with Sura’s children.

He made it known who he was and when he found out there names he made it clear who he was talking too. Ducky already loved how Elliot played with her and she really liked how he talked but her mind also made the connection as to what he was saying. She recognised some of the sounds that were same as the ones her mother and father used with her and her siblings but when Elliot pointed to her last of all and said her name, it clicked, that was how her mother addressed her, that was her name. “Ducky” she said pointing to herself and repeating exactly what Elliot said slowly. The adults gasped. Ducky moved slowly to each of her siblings and pronounced their names slowly. “Opal, Rapid, Spinner, Echo, Diver, Sandy, Ray” she looked at Elliot and then said “Elliot” though she said his very slowly and she had difficulty pronouncing all the sounds in his and her sibling’s names.

Suddenly Ducky found herself in her mother’s arms and being nuzzled lovingly “Oh, my beautiful little Ducky, that’s right, that’s your name dear and the names of all brothers and sisters” she said as she nuzzled her to Ducky’s immense joy. She loved happily and hugged her mother’s beak and sighed happily as her mother gently rocked her back and forth in her arms and hummed softly.

“Oh I am so happy for you” said her father and nuzzled his daughter as she lay in his mate’s arms. Ducky squeaked in joy.

“Yep, she is advanced” said Merri.

“Yep, yep, yep!” said Ducky happily to the astonishment of the adults, the placing of those words was actually in the correct context but really Ducky just liked the sound of the words and happily repeated them three times, little did she know that these words would soon become her catchphrase.

“I can see that” said Ellie in awe but then she looked at the sky, it was turning orange as The Bright Circle started to set. “Alright Elliot, time we went back home dear” she called to her son.

Elliot groaned “Do I have too?” he asked.

“Yes dear, the hatchlings have had enough fun for today I think” said his mother.

“Okay” replied Elliot reluctantly and hastily got out of the water and shook himself dry. “Goodbye” said to the hatchlings and waved at them. As he ran back to his mother. Ducky gave a sad cry “Elliot” she cried. The boy looked back and saw the pleading Swimmer with tears in her eyes. She walked out of the water and attempted to dry herself like Elliot but accidentally fell on her belly. Elliot returned to Ducky’s side and held her hand.

“I’ll come back and play with you again sometime Ducky I promise. I will come back” He said the last words slowly and clearly and gave Ducky’s hand a slight squeeze and parted with her even though Ducky was looking at him with a pleading expression. Ducky let out a sad squeak as her new friend, her first friend left her for the day. She sat on the ground and started to cry. Her father gently nuzzled her until she had calmed down but Ducky still didn’t understand why Elliot had to go.

“Goodbye Sura, it was great to see you again and to see your little ones” said Ellie as she hoisted her son into her hands “Thank you” said her son and waved his hand.

“Your welcome dears, come back anytime” said Sura as they left and returned to the nest. She observed that both the original nest and the back-up scrape had not dried up yet so it looked like her babies would be sleeping with her tonight. So as the evening descended and the light started to fade. Sura and Ruphus hoisted their little ones out of the water and dried them up. This was followed by the hungry calls from her children. Thankfully the bedding leaves came in very useful as half her children relived themselves on them just after they finished their supper. Merri quickly replaced the leaves while Sura and Ruphus held their children in their arms each parent had four kids in their arms. Ducky was being cradled in her mother’s arms as she was gently rocked back and forth along with Echo, Opal and Ray.

It was also quite amazing for Ducky to see the whole world go dark but as the night came on a full moon and shining stars shone, emitting a pale light down upon the land. Ducky gasped in awe at all the stars and reached her hands out to The Night Circle and squeaked tiredly. “Yes dear, that is The Night Circle and those little dots are the stars” said her mother softly, noting how tired her children looked.

Ducky didn’t feel very scared of the dark now with the moon and stars casting light into the darkness and with the comforting presence of her mother. “Mommy” she said tiredly and held out her hands, which gently gripped the front tip of her mother’s beak. Her mother brought her beak down to her and Ducky gave her a loving lick. Her mother smiled lovingly and hummed gently over them as she and Ruphus got into their sleeping spots though Ruphus placed the children in his arms down together with their mother and settled down right next to his mate. “I will never forget this day” he said to her. She smiled back “Nor will I” she said.

She laid the rest of her children down beside her belly where they all huddled up together beside her warm bulk. Sura then wrapped her tail around them and curled her head so she could always see her children. “Goodnight my little ones” she said softly as they all dropped off to sleep “Sweet dreams, I’ll see you all in the morning”

Sura finally allowed herself to place her head down just as she saw Ducky open her beak and yawn tiredly, her little arms stretching out wide for a few seconds before she brought them back in again. Ducky hummed softly as she placed her head on the ground and fell asleep. Dreaming of her first day and the days countless yet to come and of her loving family, how she loved them with all her heart. Ducky slept contently as she began her journey in this brave new world with her brothers and sisters, her aunt, father and her loving mother. She would sleep contently this night.

Her mother smiled as she watched her baby daughter fall asleep, she was a mother now and she loved her little ones, there would not be a day gone by that she would not be there for them. “Goodnight dear” she said to her mate and finally allowed herself to fall asleep with her new family.

Well their you go, hope you enjoyed the first story don't forget to give some feedback and make sure you say if you want me to continue another day with Ducky or move on to Ruby. This story was rather easy to write.

LBT Fanfiction / LBT Author's Q&A
« on: September 14, 2016, 07:44:40 AM »
I recently had an idea after reading some of the newer fanfictions here. To have a Questions and Answers or an equivalent of an Ask Me thread for LBT authors. Here authors can discuss fanfic ideas and provide each other with inspiration and tips. In addition anyone can ask (author or not) any question to any of the LBT authors here on the forum about the stories (LBT related) that they have written as well ask for tips on fanfic writing for new authors like a good Q&A, a good way to exchange stories and tips as well as feedback.

Advise I would give to new authors would be to perhaps watch an LBT movie and pay attention to how the characters talk, think and interact to help get into the correct character mindset when writing.

And now a fun fact about my LBT fanfic The Swimmer Trials. I got my inspiration to write from Rhombus's The Seven Hunters and I got the idea of The Swimmer Trials from one of Ducky123's RP's The Great Day of The Swimmers.

If there is a question that I would like to ask one of the authors here it's this: Ducky123 what inspired you to first start writing your fanfictions The astonishing journey to The Land of Many Wonders and Shorty's Dark Past?

Anyway I hope you all find this thread interesting, fun and beneficial. I wasn't sure were to place this thread but I figured this will be the best place.

It was a beautiful day in The Great Valley, no chance of rain and a no cool breeze, perfect day to be out and about. The Gang was no exception they lined up in the meadow outside The Secret Caverns. They were preparing to paly one of their many games, in this case a game of toss the seed. It was a classic girls vs boys match with Littlefoot, Petrie and Chomper lined up against Cera, Ruby and Ducky. Spike however was sitting on the edge of the clearing and gorging himself on a succulent bush, oblivious to the game.

Ducky had said that Spike would probably join the game after his meal. Littlefoot raised his tail. "Ready?"

A chorus of "Yes's" met his ears and with a whack of his tail the game was on.

The Swimmer watched the game from the surrounding trees with a smile on her face as she remembered times long gone, memories of fun and adventure and youth that she often felt when she looked at The Gang. With a content sigh Sura turned her attention to her two little ones. Ducky and Spike, although they did not know this yet is that Ducky and her clutch mates would be participating in a rite of passage called The Swimmer Trials. She had made up her mind to tell her children sometime today but that could wait as she sat on her haunches and watched the game with a smile on her face. What a pleasant day it was.

General Land Before Time / Something I noticed
« on: May 30, 2016, 12:06:02 AM »
Looking back at the 7th movie, I noticed that during the kidnapping and when Petrie flies after his Uncle I noticed that his mother who was aware of what was going on had not come with him when she was perfectly capable and in my opinion completely obliged o help with the attempted rescue but she didn't. Her involvement might have prevented the kidnapping from even happening but she just stayed put or who knows why. I guess it's just a little detail that the film makers didn't notice. Anyway what are your thoughts?

« on: March 14, 2016, 09:11:27 PM »
So I've had this idea for a while, to put up a Swimmer Trials RP. For those of you who've read the story, the RP will follow the same basic plot structure. The Rite of passage The Swimmer Trials is coming and Ducky is chosen for a Trial no one has survived ect.

The characters are also the same as in the story except you can take any of Ducky's younger siblings as well. (Second Clutch Younglings) You can make up any of them but not the first clutch.

For those of you who haven't read The Swimmer Trials yet. The characters up for grabs are.

Sura (Ducky's mother)
Ruphus (Ducky's Father)
Merri (Ducky's Aunt)

Swimmer children first clutch:
Rapid (B)
Opal (G)
Sandy (G)
Echo (B)
Diver (G)
Spinner (B)
Ray (B)
Ducky (G)

The Gang if seven is also up for grabs as well as the Valley elders. As well as Ali and her mother.

Other Swimmers include :

Swayer (B, deceased)
Sculra (High Elder, Antagonist)

and for the later parts. NOTE: Don't take these characters in the early parts, they come in later)
Cyrest (Trial of Destiny survivor, father to Swayer)
Jane (Hatchling, Cyrest's niece)
Bluey (Ducky's Aunt)
Grandma Swimmer or Isira (Sura's mother and Ducky's Grandmother)
Trough (Ducky's boyfriend)

I'll add more character as they become relevant. It is highly recommended that you read The Swimmer Trials, so you have an idea of where the RP is heading.

I will be taking Sura and Littlefoot. So anyone one interested in joining?

Hobbies and Recreation / Scuba Diving
« on: October 29, 2015, 06:09:34 AM »
I wonder if anyone else here is also a fellow Diver like myself. I personally have been diving recreationally since I was 15 and I totally love it. The waters around the coast of Victoria, Australia are a wonderful diving place, though I would love to dive at South West Rock in NSW which holds the largest Grey Nurse Shark colony in the world and yes I have dived with Grey Nurse before and would love to again.

Some of my experiences include seeing a whole school of Barracuda, stumbling upon a large Octopus, being completely swamped by Banjo Sharks/Fiddler Rays and much more however I have certainly had tough experiences like sea sickness when stuck out in The Bass Strait, feeling the fierce pull of the ocean currents and surviving five cases of severe hypothermia.

Does anyone else here dive? What type of underwater experiences have you had?

Silver Screen / SeaQuest DSV
« on: October 26, 2015, 12:22:02 AM »
Any discussion referring to the 90s TV series SeaQuest DSV can go here.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with SeaQuest it is like Star Trek only under the sea and The SeaQuest is a the largest submarine in the world, set in the near future the series explores both the scientific and military adventures of The SeaQuest and her crew. The series however only lasted three seasons but I still really enjoyed the series.

What are your thoughts on the issue did anyone find it as interesting as I did?

The Written Word / How's everyone find my fanfic
« on: February 15, 2015, 04:41:37 AM »
As some of you may already know, I'm writing a fanfic called the Swimmer Trials, which is similar to The Great Day of The Flyers. But Ducky is chosen to do a Trial that no one has survived. The story is about the lead up to the Trial, the big day and the aftermath.

Any comments and feedback you have can go in here as I would really appreciate it.

LBT Fanfiction / The Swimmer Trials
« on: February 04, 2015, 11:39:36 PM »
I have decided to start posting my first fanfic. This my first so any feedback and constructed criticism you will be appreciated.

The story is like The Day of the Flyers except for Swimmers, the story goes that Ducky is chosen for a certain trial that no one has ever survived and what happens in the lead up and on the day of this big event.

The story is about friendship, despair, family and hope.
Wish me luck and hope you enjoy it and please feel free to post feedback on each chapter. With any luck I should be able to post 1-2 chapters each week.
