Title: My Polymer Clay Sculptures
Post by: Mumbling on August 20, 2010, 08:57:05 AM
Other than the Land Before Time, I mean :) See my blog (http://claydesigns.blogspot.com/) for more detailed information on the sculptures!

Today I made a Draik sculpture. This is a dragon like Neopet.

I must say I am quite impressed with the result!

I will be submitting it to Draik Day on Neopets to (hopefully) win a virtual price :)

The Wishing Well, based of the Wishing Well in Neopets.

Clearly, Iris, your artistic skills are not limited to LBT fanart! :!

I know nothing about Neopets, but the Draik looks great! He’s got a lot of character, especially with those eyebrows, the fins on his head, and that mustache. :lol You did a really good job sculpting his head; I love how the yes and nostrils look. Best of luck to you in winning that prize. :yes

I’m REALLY impressed by the wishing well. :wow That looks like a very intricate design. :o Am I correct in assuming that the only parts actually made of clay are the bucket, the roof, and the brown things supporting the roof and holding the handle together? (By the way, I love how it’s a working model, with the bucket that can be hauled up. :DD)

I’m really curious about how you made the well wall. It looks amazing. Did you use real stones to build it? If so, did you have to cut or sculpt them somehow, or did you just find ones that were the right shapes? Either way, it looks like building the well must have been a lot of work. It’s incredible how level the layers of stones are, and how perfectly circular and symmetrical the wall is (from what I can tell). Does it have a base or a “floor” to it, too, or is the bottom just a ring of stones? Finally, how tall is it? From the looks of the photos, it can’t be much more than a few inches.

I previously commented (http://www.gangoffive.net/index.php?topic=804&view=findpost&p=9198418) a little on the Simba ornament (I’m sorry, what is it exactly?) in Tim’s star day thread, but I can probably come up with a few more things to say. :p First, I think the colors you used are gorgeous (I love that shade of orange). And the pictures you stuck on it are really nice. :DD (What’s that little heart on the left photo made of, by the way?) And as with the well, I’m curious about how big it was. :)

I honestly loved how the head came out myself as well. When I saw it I immediately baked it, just in case that the body would look horrible I still would have the nice head ;) Thank you for your comments.

The only parts not made of clay are: the rope, the wooden handle and horizontal pin in the middle and the iron pin which I used to attach the rope to the bucket.

When I was in Canada I went shopping at a craft store with Tim. There I saw this clay called 'Stone colored clay', from the same brand as I use to normally model with. I decided to check it out, and when I came with an idea for the wishing well I just couldn't resist buying it. They are bars of 1 ounce which have a stone pattern in them, that won't go away. I cut them all in little blocks and tried to press them together, which is what the wall consists of (two different colors).

It does have a floor. I took a piece of Brown clay which I formed in the shape of a circle (which if you look well, you can see in the top right picture). The ring of stones is laid around it :)

The well is about 5 or 6 cm tall.... about 2 inches, I think. It took quite a while to make, but it was totally worth it! :)

It actually just is a Simba Ornament, haha. It is also 'our' ornament... Ever since I got a christmas present of 'us' in 2009, I decided I wanted one for every year... So this is the one for 2010 :) Tim and I have been together since 2008, but we never met that year, so we never gave something material to each other. I like that shade of orange very much myself, and used a full package of it to create this present (therefore I had to buy a new one at the craft store, which lead me to the stone colored clay :p ). The heart is painted on there with Acrylic paint :)

It is about 13cm from left to right, which is *gets converter* 5.1 inches. Definitely the biggest project I've had so far when it comes to size ;) As I said it used a whole package of clay, which is why I tend not so make big sculptures and stick to those which are just 2 inches. Clay packages aren't that cheap, especially here since there aren't any real craft stores and I have to get them shipped from overseas...

Thanks for your comments and questions!!

Wow. :o It sure fooled me. I really thought it was real rock. :oops I like how all of the blocks aren't exactly the same shape; it makes the well look more realistic. :yes

The intricacy of the well is made all the more amazing by the fact that it is so small. :wow

That's a shame. :( Did you buy any clay in Canada that you brought back home with you?

Hope to see more work from you soon! :smile

Yeah I bought 8 pieces of clay in Canada, I got lucky because they were with a discount (got them for $2 a package, normally it would be like $3.50) I replaced my orange package, bought two packages of white (that clay goes quickly!), some glow in the dark clay (sounds like fun!), gold clay (which I used for the Draik shown above) and yellow, because just as with painting, you need a lot of yellow! :)

I tried to make the blocks look a little bit more realistic by having them all different shapes/sizes :)

By the way, this is the draik I based my sculpture on:

Whoa... I tried making Simba, failed epically at the head :o So I merged all the clay in one big ball, and pacman came out of it!

So yeah, keyring.

It's about 1inch :)

Heh, nice. :smile Way to make the best of a failed sculpting attempt!

By the way, I have to say that I like the mustache on your Draik sculpture better than that of the Draik in the picture. :D And the sculpture overall is very accurate, even if the arms and body are a little simplistic. :yes

Thanks Pangaea! I made the arms so simple because all my attempts at claws seem to fail when it is so tiny :p

Thanks Kor :)

Yes, they are alright. They are at least twice the size of the hands though, which makes them easier to control and work with.

Another monster with claws coming up! This time it was a commission of a friend, who wanted me to make a Manticore.

On the bottom right you can see that it has glow in the dark eyes, claws and spikes :)

Wow! Nice job on the wings, and the detail of the mane. And the glow-in-the-dark parts are really neat, especially the eyes. Is the lack of detail on the face just because of the size of the model?

Any chance we could see this model from other angles? :)
Title: My Polymer Clay Sculptures
Post by: Mumbling on September 03, 2010, 12:53:26 AM
The lack of detail in the face is because I made it for a friend who wants  to paint it, including the face. So I thought I'd let him do that :p

I'll post a picture of the back etc, later :)

What colors does he use for it?

I don't know exactly what colors he will be using, but he'll paint it with acrylics :)

Oh, cool! :wow That's a beautiful leaf! I love the color, and the fact that it's not perfectly symmetrical gives it a look more like that of a dried autumn leaf (though perhaps that wasn't intentional :p). And the detail of the veins on the leaf is spectacular! :yes Is that a real stone in the center, and if yes, do you know what kind it is?
Title: My Polymer Clay Sculptures
Post by: Mumbling on September 10, 2010, 01:25:31 AM
It wasn't intentional indeed, but I do like it better as well :D

The stone is actually a pebble from the card game called Magic the gathering, which my brothers play. I just stole one :D

Hmm…an anthropomorphized Christmas present and…I don’t know what the other one is :confused (Another Neopet?). I’m really impressed by the ribbons on the present. Are these models really delicate once they’re finished?

They are both some kind of neopet, can't really explain :p They are from the same kind, painted different 'colors' (blue & christmas).

The clay that I work with stays a tiny bit bendable even if you have baked it, though if you throw it on the floor, parts that were pressed on there might fall of. In case of big things connected on small parts, they might break off earlier. In any case, the sculptures are all really strong and would only break if you'd let them drop or throw them on the floor (and even then, they wouldn't shatter to pieces but just lose for example: a wing), and you can fix them with hard plastic glue :D

Thanks Kor! :)

Wow! That's some good-quality clay! :wow Can you tell me the brand? If I ever make any clay models, I'd like to use that kind.

Hmm…The new figure looks kinda like a parakeet crossed with a Charmander, wearing a wizard's robe and a witch's hat/romanticized-Viking helmet :p (and…are those ear flaps on the hat?). It looks good! :smile

Yeah you are taking me too literally there. I was actually just explaining the concept of neopets. You can paint pets in different colors, but they will look entirely different (like the two above). The clay I use is indeed not painted :)

The brand I mainly use is Sculpey III. Other brans I've tried are Fimo and Premo, but you should really find something that suits you :) For me, Fimo is too soft to work with. I prefer Sculpey because it mushes up less fast, but of course it's also harder to kneed.

The hat is actually an item called 'Kauvara's Hat'. It's a hat from a magician, which is a cow... That's why the horns and the ear flaps are there, lol :D

Also , the dots light up in the dark. Forgot to mention that.

Ooh. That reminds me, how did you take the photo of the manticore figure glowing in the dark? Did you just turn the flash on the camera off?

You bake them at 270 F (130C) for like 20 minutes. This can be done in any home oven, so that's a real nice feature of this clay.

I took the picture of the manticore indeed by closing my curtains, turn of the flash and make sure the glow in the dark pieces are charged well... and keeping my hands still so that they won't move :D :p

Thanks Kor! :) It took about an hour, with the clothes, and about 30 minutes without them.

Cute house. :DD I like how you put grooves in the door to make it look like it's comprised of wooden boards. And are those vines or ivy growing on the side? That's probably my favorite detail (along with the door). Those tiny little flowers look amazing. :wow (Judging by the grass in the photo, the house is really small; I'm having trouble imagining how tiny the flowers must be.)

Nice ladybugs, too. I had to look closely, but I notice that each one has a groove down the center of its back to mark the separation of its wing cases. About how big are these ladybugs?
Title: My Polymer Clay Sculptures
Post by: Mumbling on September 22, 2010, 01:09:22 AM
Thanks! And yeah! :D Those flowers are very tiny, haha. I took a string as small as your smallest finger's fingernail, flattened it and rolled it into a tiny rose.

The lady bugs are not that small. I'm trying to think of a decent example here, but I think about half of a penny in diameter :)

Moon created of Glow in the Dark Polymer Clay
Carrots are 'just orange' with 'green'

And there are glittery sparkles all over! Sadly enough a bit too much, but I do know how to work with them now :)

The male one is wearing a black bowtie and the female one a blue ribbon.. Now I know why they call it Transparent Blue :D

Hoo boy…I’ve been falling behind on my reviewing.

Nice work with the “Hogwarts Beginners’ Set”. :smile Lemme see…I recognize a wand, books, a hat, a cauldron (probably my favorite; I love the “brew” you put in it :DD), robes, and…is that a telescope? I don’t know what the little red and orange things are. :confused

Still one thing missing, though: a critter! :P: (Though I suppose owls, bats, cats, and toads aren’t technically school supplies.)

I thought the carrots were on a giant decorated peeled banana at first. :lol I figured it was either that or a crescent moon, though. This is one of your more random creations. :p Is this meant to be a pendant or ornament of some kind? (I see a little ring on top.)

I like the color of the “transparent blue” clay. That’s a pretty good ribbon you made. :yes And the bow tie on the male carrot is funny. :lol

The yellow things are copper scales (and yes, I was lazy so they don't look like it :D) and the red thingies are red dragonhide gloves for protection of the hands :) & yeah, that is a telescope.

A critter was actually not on the list :D So I didn't make one. lol

Yeah it's my moon carrots... lol :D It can be used as a charm of kinds or as a pendant, not sure yet but I thought it'd be cute.

Me too ! I love light blue which is why i bought it, and I thought it was curious why they called it transparent. But I can clearly see in the picture why. Thanks.

By the way I have a blog now in which you can see in full details how I make my work :) http://claydesigns.blogspot.com/ (http://claydesigns.blogspot.com/)

I don’t get it, I’m afraid, :oops but I like the cake! :D (Is that a jack o’lantern face on it?) Those are some great colors you used (blue frosting and red/pink icing), and I love the skewy* candles! :smile

*word I just invented, meaning bent or curved in unusual, varying angles or directions :p

The cake is a lie is an internet meme (you can just look it up on google :D ), but that's not really why I made it. I made it because I joined a contest (with the theme: lures).

I'd like your opinion.. Is this creature a plant, a herbivore or a carnivore?

It has to be part of a rainforest Ecosystem. Name suggestions are welcome, too :)

So…you haven’t decided what it is yet, and you’d like us to tell you what we think it is? Sure!

Do you see it as being motile (capable of moving around) or sessile (stuck in place)? The eyes suggest to me that it is capable of moving around, as all of the animals I can think of that spend their lives rooted to the spot (corals, anemones, mussels, barnacles, sea squirts), are eyeless, whereas most ambulatory animals of insect size or larger that don’t live in perpetually dark environments have vision (save for a few ocean drifters such as jellyfish and salps). However, I don’t see any obvious limbs or mouth (unless they’re underneath the body), so I don’t see it as being especially fast, or as being a predator that chases its prey. From the looks of it, if it moves at all, it’s probably limited to sliding around like a slug or amoeba.

By the way, it doesn’t have to be a carnivorous animal, a herbivorous animal, OR a plant. I can be a combination, like a carnivorous plant, a plant that feeds on other plants (like a parasite), or an animal that has a symbiotic relationship with microscopic plants, which live in its tissues and provide it with extra nutrients in the form of photosynthetic byproducts. Examples of all three exist in real life: venus flytraps and pitcher plants, mistletoe and Rafflesia, and hard corals and spotted salamander eggs, respectively. It could be a saprophyte (an organism that feeds on decaying matter); maybe not a glamorous ecological role from a human perspective, but an EXTREMELY important one.

Having only two small leaves (are they ears?) on its head and a leaf-like projection on its tail would not be especially useful for photosynthesis or camouflage. My suggestion is to have it use them for communication purposes, flapping and twitching its ears and waving and flicking its tail like semaphore, to send visual messages to others of its kind.

It kinda looks like it’s wearing a bunch of red-and-yellow neckties. :lol If you’ve thought of it already, what are those things, and what is their purpose? Can they lift up and move like tentacles, or are they fused to the sides of its body? One idea I had would be that they could secrete nectar or some other attractive-smelling substance (as many carnivorous plants do), to lure insects and other small animals. When they land or crawl onto the “neckties”, they curl from the tip, fold from the sides, or otherwise enclose the prey, trapping it. Once the prey has been digested, the “neckties” open again.

I’m still not sure about that round white thing on its head. What is it supposed to be, if you had anything in mind?

In summary, I think this creature is most likely an animal with symbiotic plants in its skin. I have a couple of ideas for what its lifestyle could be. My “necktie trap” and “leaf semaphore” ideas are compatible with both:

#1: It crawls over the forest floor, feeding on fungi, decomposing plant and animal matter, and anything slow or oblivious enough for it to catch. It feeds by crawling on top of its food (its mouth is on its underside). Since sunlight on the forest floor is limited to small patches that constantly shift with the movement of the sun, its ability to move allows it to maximize its time in the light for continual photosynthesis.

#2: It lives in the forest canopy, crawling along tree branches and up trunks, the underside of its body gripping them like a gecko’s foot. It also has mouthparts on its underside, which it uses to pierce the bark of its tree and drain the sap for nutrition. It also absorbs sunlight for photosynthesis, and devours plants that try to gain a roothold on its tree (vines, bromeliads, strangler figs, etc.).

I can’t think of a name, I’m afraid, but does any of that help? :)

I¥m glad to hear your ideas Pangaea! That really does help. I have thought of a kind of idea for the plant myself by now. I might however pull elements of your ideas in it at well! :)

My idea so far:

This green, plantlike creature is in fact a little monster of the rainforest. With its big eyes and a radiating globe on its head it truly seems harmless. However it turns out to be a different creature than most of us think.

The globe radiates light, which is in fact his way of luring a pray. Either a plant which turns towards the source of light, or another creature who is lured by its plant-like existence. They will be grabbed by one of many 'leaves' on the side of the creature, and eaten by a vicious mouth hidden beneath those leaves. The creature is small and therefore not harmful for most others.

I guess it can also move around with the tentacle like leaves.

Sounds mean? Yeah :p

The thing is, for the contest I have to create 4 to 8 creatures who live in some kind of rainforest. I would like all other creatures to somehow be related to this one.

Wow, Iris! More nice work! :DD I really like the color on the center mushroom (and the crown looks good, too). Overall I think the green one looks best shape-and-symmetry-wise, but I think you did the best job merging the differently colored clays to make the red one (such that the spots don't form three-dimensional surface features).

And I swear, that Squirtle figure looks like it could have been professionally made. :wow I think I had one that looked almost exactly like that once.

Also, pretty nice behavioral concept for the rainforest critter. :smile If it uses bioluminescence to lure prey, then it would make sense for it to be nocturnal, or dwell on the forest floor (or both). Though using its light to attract plants seems awfully inefficient (unless some of the plants in your rainforest are capable of moving around; that's an idea for another rainforest organism you could create :idea).

Here's a little update on the rainforest!

These are just the basics. The 'hole' on the leftbottom will eventually be the nest of another critter. There will probably be a creature in the tree or hanging from the tree.

Looks fantastic, Iris! :wow Great colors! (It must have taken a lot of clay to make this.) I love the tree, and the bromeliad-like plant on the right! Where’s that branch lying on top of it coming from, though? Also, what’s that reddish brown thing? A river? (If it is a river, it looks really good! :o) Finally, are the creatures attached to the background, or can they be moved? Same question for the pieces of wood.

Looks great on the work you've done so far with the sculpture.  Hope you continue.  This one seems the largest and most complex so far.

Post by: Mumbling on October 19, 2010, 02:20:41 AM
You're quite correct pangaea, it took quite a lot of clay to make this. The branch is coming from uh.. somewhere :D The reddish brown thing is a river, indeed, but a slow moving one :D The creatures can still be moved, since I am unsure where to put them, but the logs are stuck to the background. The tree is still moveable too.

Thank you Kor! It's indeed quite complex ^^

Personally, I’d be reluctant to cover the great Octillery (though I can’t tell what it looks like from the back). Still, it would look cute to see it on top of the Octillery; can you just balance the top of the pumpkin edgewise on the tentacles behind the Octillery’s head?

It would look cute with the pumpkin on his head, but it doesn't stay there so I guess I'd have to glue it on.

Nice and cute looking sculpture.  Up to you if you want to glue the top on.  You could leave it at the side as if it fell off when it popped out of the top.  Though it would be more prone to get lost that way.

Hmm…looks like gluing the pumpkin lid to the Octillery wouldn't cover up too much, and you're right, it does look good. But it's up to you. :)

And wow, Korseth, those dragon sculptures are incredible! :wow I'd strongly recommend starting your own art thread here in the Visual Arts (http://http://www.gangoffive.net/index.php?board=30.0) section to show off your artwork (you can also make a thread for LBT artwork like your Littlefoot sculpture in the Fanart and Fanfiction (http://http://www.gangoffive.net/index.php?board=13.0) section). Also, since it looks like you're new here, I'd suggest that you post in The Welcome Center (http://http://www.gangoffive.net/index.php?board=7.0) so you can introduce yourself to us and we can give you a Great Valley-worthy welcome. :D

PS: Napoleon Shorty by the way would have been on the picture too if I had taken a wider scope (in which case the focus would not have been on Petrie however). Napoleon Shorty is some 40 centimeters to the left on a part of the board which would otherwise have a conspicuous absence of longnecks  ;)

Hello 11 year old topic. How about a bump?

I've recently gotten back into clay sculptures again... But first, this old one that I somehow never posted here. It is Shovel Knight and Shield knight resting at a campfire (with an LED candle (https://i.makeagif.com/media/9-27-2015/sIJcq_.gif)):

Anyway, that one was done back in 2015 :) I've picked it up recently on my Twitch streams again, making sculptures based on games I've played recently. Here's the first one, from BioShock:

It is a Little Sister playing with her blocks in the company of her teddy bear. I also made her Adam extractor gun, or whatever it is called :D And she made a little drawing of her and Big Daddy, of course.

And just today I made Toriel, from the game Undertale:

:O
They all are awesome! You have a nice collection, Mumbling! :D

Unfortunately, I almost never had plasticine in childhood, though I wanted to make something myself... :(

Amazing Mumbling! That angry Necrodancer Shroom looks like a nightmare for the Mario Bros. ;)

How long does a typical piece take you to create?

It really depends! These last few dioramas that I've posted took between 2-3 hours each. If I'm just making a character, it can vary between 15 minutes to an hour depending on how much detail they have :)

That’s amazing! I am really enjoying them. Keep it up. :)
