Hi, these days I am looking for a kind of historical document that seems to be nearly impossible to come by. In early February I will be holding a presentation on the early American republic, which includes of course the presidency of George Washington. It was certainly a very difficult presidency with everything George Washington did becoming a precedent. With all the adorsion of Washington that set in very quickly there was however also a lot of criticism. For example he (who had refused to take a crown) was accused of monarchist and anti-American leanings (no kidding, the accusation is not as recent an invention as most of us would probably think). People like Thomas Paine (the man who wrote "Common Sense" and first proposed the name "United States of America") actually publicly wished for a soon death of Washington
From what I read even caricatures of Washington being guillotined (at a time when this was conducted en masse in France) appeared. However, while I read such describtions I haven't found any depiction of any anti-George Washington caricature done in his lifetime. Neither in any of my books, nor on any webpage have I found any such material, almost like we intended to "gloss over" that part of history. Did anyone of you ever see such a caricature or (better even) does anyone of you have any access to any anti-Washington caricature or other material printed in his lifetime? It would be really a great help for me if anyone could help me with my search for that kind of material.

I haven't been able to locate anything myself, Malte. It is interesting, as it seems a period of history that's been suppressed. Another point to bring up is Jay's Treaty. That definitely didn't sit well with the Jeffersonians at the time. Abandoning France (the nation who gave the US immense help in the Revolutionary War) in favor of Britain was a very controversial move at the time, and the treaty was definitely in greater favor of the British than it was the Americans.

I wish I had found something, as that way I could "repay" you for that excellent Scharnhorst family tree you gave me. ;)

I found one at least by now, which shows Washington rolling over protesters in a carriage with soldiers marching ahead while Jefferson (of whom carricatures are easier to be found) is trying to hold the wheel of the carriage. The most radical anti-Washington caricatures described in the books I checked don't seem to be available on the net, but the one I got will do for the presentation (by now I have proceeded to Adam's presidency in the presentation).

By now I am looking for something else for another presentation. Does anyone of you know of any images (photos or (more likely) drawings) of San Francisco made before 1848; before the gold rush that is?

I just did a quick look.  Not sure if it's of any use to you but I did find some, likely stuff you already have.

a picture of a engraving of San Francisco supposed to be from 1822 from a wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:San_Fran,_1822.jpg

a web page I found with some clickable thumbnail pictures you can click on to get larger images: http://www.zpub.com/sf/history/sfh2.html

Hope they help.   I found a few more.  The page has 3 at the top that may help.  The first is supposedly from 1837 & the 2nd from 1846 & a 3rd one from 1847: http://www.sfgenealogy.com/sf/history/hgviews.htm

Not sure if it's of what you want but there is one drawing labeled "The 1846 Rancho San Miguel Land Grant."  Looks like an overhead view drawing of what I'd guess are property lines or something: http://www.foundsf.org/index.php?title=Category:1823-1846

a drawing (or painting) labeled "San Francisco in March 1847" :  http://www.foundsf.org/index.php?title=WHY...GINS:_1835-1849

not very large but labeled "A visit to 1816 San Francisco." http://www.foundsf.org/index.php?title=A_V...6_San_Francisco

http://www.foundsf.org/index.php?title=Fra...n_San_Francisco  Has 2 pictures that may or may not be along the lines of what you want.  Near the top of the page is a painting from 1820, and near the bottom is a drawing from 1816.

page that has a Lithograph supposedly from march of 1847: http://www.sfmuseum.org/hist1/yerba.html

Thank you very much Kor :)
What I had in mind was showing a couple of pre- and post-gold rush images of San Francisco which is perfectly possible now. Thanks a lot for your help  :yes
