Title: Pebble and the Penguin forum
Post by: Adder on August 12, 2010, 04:16:50 PM
I created a new forum about The Pebble and the Penguin (http://z15.invisionfree.com/Pebble_and_Penguin/index.php) I already asked Tropicalia at her forum if she'd come (unintentional though, I was asking for help, and she said she'd join).

So if anyone goes to the site, can you please join there? I'm not forcing any one to join, I wanted to be know about it, and possibly join if they want too.

[Edit by Mumbling]
Moved the topic to The Fridge. The 'Show Us' forum is meant for pictures :)

Colors are way too bright....dark colors or colors with more contrast will help.  Bright orange and red aren't good on the eyes for any extended period of time. ;)  Try that.  Also, I'm curious at the choice of proboards as a host.  I have never cared for them much, but they are simpler than invisionfree and have some features IPB doesn't have.

How's the new one? Dark green. dark blue and yellow orange. Is that better? Really, I'm still working on the skins. I'll have to add more images to the other skins, and maybe change the colors on some others, I don't remember if their bright or not.

That's just the default skin, I've got one of Hubie, the snow birds, rocko and the group of girls seen at the beginning of the movie, and through out it.

Feel free to suggest any others (expect Drake, I don't like him).

Okay, but I've only found one image of him on google that is just him. But then again I typed in Marina, not Drake.

Didn't find anything of him when I typed in Drake, so I'm looking in a youtube video.

But it won't be set as the default skin, cause most people I know prefer Marina over any character. That's why I set her as the default skin, and my skin that I see. Most of the colors with him will be dark colors (dark red, blue, green, orange, etc.)

I honestly can't even read that post because the brown on blue makes it very hard to read.

(http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e294/mr300/th_forumcapture.jpg) (http://s41.photobucket.com/albums/e294/mr300/?action=view&current=forumcapture.jpg)

You will need to do something where there is a dark color on a light color.  Nothing else will work.  Also, you might want to consider setting image restraints on avatar size...that's half my screen.  Only other thing I see wandering around....too many forums and subforums.  Your site is small.  Keep it small until you have the member base to branch out into many sections.  Notice how small my Mistmantle board is: http://z7.invisionfree.com/Mistmantle/ (http://z7.invisionfree.com/Mistmantle/)   I don't dare start it out as large as this board is because its too new, too small, and not ready.  I would say one section for characters is enough...not separate sections for every voice actor.

Okay, I changed the text color to a dark purple, the avatars are placeholders until I can get smaller ones made.

I deleted the cast section completly.

But I'm not sure how the other skins are to other people, they all looked like I could see words fine when I created them.

Its hard to judge how skins look to other people because monitors have varying contrast levels, brightness levels, etc.

I checked your board again and dark purple doesn't help.  Its the clash of colors that isn't working....like I said light/dark primary colors...white text on black, dark blue, dark purple, dark green....things like that.  Green on blue, purple on brown, things like that are going to cause problems.

I cannot offer much help on how to change a lot of colors, never using proboards or their system.

First piece:  "Board Wrappers" in the footer (guessing, looks like footer code)

Second piece: "Board Wrappers" in the header

Third piece:  Put that huge chunk of code in "Manage Style Sheets".  Delete the old one and put this in.

That should work.  Usually the theme creators tell you where to put all the code.  I'm surprised they didn't.  I'll be on Windows Live if you want to talk in real time.  I've got a bit of spare time to help out.

Don't know where any of those things are. How about you just create an account whenever you have time, I give you the admin rights, and you do the skin for me. I'll give you the image links later.

You're the boss...if that's what you want to do.  I like the set up of this proboards better than the last one.  Fewer sections, straightforward, make sense, and can grow as the board does. :)  The colors still don't sit well with me, but I'm the one that's blind as a bat.  Maybe people with eagle eyes don't have as much of a problem with it. :neutral

For curiousity's sake, why the handwritten banner images?  Your color schemes are easier to read, so that was a good change.

Adding the link to IMDB (http://www.imdb.com) and google (http://www.google.com).

I'm asking wikia if there are any other sites besides those I can submit it too.

If anyone here knows any, can you please tell me?

EDIT: Tried adding the new link IMDB.

I never knew invision gave the option of default avatars to choose from.  Must've overlooked that one.

There's not much else to submit to besides those.

Uhhh...I'm not entirely positive.  Remember, I've never administered a board through proboards to know.  Maybe Tropicala knows...doesn't she have a proboard?

Personal opinion on this one...do not start that government section early in the board's life.  Starting it too early means a lot of manipulation by members when the forum needs to grow before accepting ideas from anyone should be allowed. ;)  Wait a few years....yes years.

I know. I planning on starting that one last of all the forums and categories, but how'd you get the caption this archive read only is all I was wondering.

I'll ask her, but she's at work now, It'll be a while before I get a response.

I wouldn't know.  Invisionfree and proboards are not the same, so what I do over here will not mean the same thing over there. To make it Read-Only on this board, there is an option to make the section read only.  I don't know if proboards offers that.

That's a lot of openings for a forum not on its feet yet.  Honestly, run it alone for a while.  Even the staff here will tell you they were not promoted immediately nor did I ever advertise for the position.  I appointed them only when I knew who the people were, and if I needed them to help out.  Otherwise, its better to run the site yourself when its new.

Its just an example, I'm going to lock the topic for now, so know one can post in there, and I'll ignore any requests until there's atleast 30 members there.

I just gave tropicalia watcher rights since she's been expireneced with forums before, and nintendoofah mod rights for Hubie, since that's one of his fave characters, and he seems trustworthy. But after them, no one will be given staff rights (or mod).

We get lots of visitors but not everyone joins.  That happens.  Also, the fact that your board is new is a deterrent...its hard to get going without a consistent base of people who will help you make the site look busy. ;)

I've written down the number (not IPs) of all the guests that have visited, atleast 70 or 80 all together, only two have joined, Tropicalia, to comment on others fanart and stories and maybe help out, and Nintendoofah64 to post his fanart and comment on others.

Looking at the color changes made, you still need a lighter text in my opinion. You have dark colored text on a dark background...I had to move closer to my screen to read it.  What also might help is if you shrink some of the images...the banner one for example.  The screen capture you have there has been stretched too large and its pixelated.  You want to use good quality captures from the dvd to make the forum look professional.  Those could be some reasons why the guests decide not to post.

I only have it on video, and I have WinDVD, but the specials features like capturing screenshots expired, and |prt scr| button dosen't work. It just copies a black screen.

I've gone to invision for the forum, I've gotten the hang of being an admin under invision.

http://z15.invisionfree.com/Pebble_and_Penguin/index.php (http://z15.invisionfree.com/Pebble_and_Penguin/index.php)?

I've gotten a skin choose, and all the images added. The "add reply", "edit", "delete" and such are temporary ones. Hope this one dose better, I'll have notifty everyone that joined the other that it has been moved to the link above. I've noticed that forums with invision get more (active) members than ones under probards.

Tremors Underground and the old happy feet forum prove this, tremors has 8 to 10 active members, and the old happy feet one dosen't have any. I won't be deleting the old forum until all the users there have joined the new one, and I will let the forum open a few more days before I close it. This WILL be the last time I switch, this one will NOT be deleted.

Please note that the announcements section can only be viewed by members, and the same rules that apply here, apply there.

You already know my opinions about the switch, and I guess you're ok with that.  I would say that those who first come to the board and find a Pebble and the Penguin logo and some guidelines with Vixen on them are going to be mighty confused as to what the board is really about.

Just wondering 2 things:

1) How do I give rights to users?

2) How do I add moderators to a specific forum?

well you should have the ability to add mods and admins since you run the board, and as for rights. those should be spelled out in the rules, ie, members may post, edit post etc..

I do have the rights, but where do I go? I went to the Edit/Find/Suspend User and Modify Boards Control Panels, wasn't in there where I can make a user a moderator of that forum. All that is in the place where I place a user in a group is:

Members
Global Mods
Admins
Banned
Valdating

There isn't one in the drop down box for moderator.

EDIT: How do I add a background image for the site, I copied the proper code, and placed it in the spread sheet, didn't show up? Or dose it go in the wrappers?

Also, how do I add/delete/edit these images in the header?

Moderators are forum moderators if they are not global moderators.  You add moderators by selecting that on the side panel and then selecting which forum they should moderate.

I've already answered your image question in a PM.  I've no clue about the images in the header.  I don't know if you can do anything about those.

I don't even think the GOF is posted at that many places (but maybe it is). Posting at sites is only part of the equation.  At first glance, the board looks dead.  You need to post the heck out of it and make it look busy or you won't get people to stick around.

I registered at your board to get a better picture of what you're doing.  I'll be posting there what sort of updates/changes I think you need to do.

In what section? Should I create the government section?

EDIT: Do you want me to give you admin rights or mod or global mod rights?

EDIT: I'm having a friend post a link to my forum (and gang of five) on her facebook page. She didn't say she'd join, but atleast she's helping out.

LOTS of new images have been added to the forum such as "add reply" "edit post" and "delete post".

Yes, they are all Pebble and the Penguin related. :p

EDIT: Here's a VERY BAD example of how a forum should look. (http://preparefortheiceage.proboards.com/index.cgi)

*Bumping this thread*   I know "The pebble and the penguin" isn't as well known of a movie as LBT, but..

I am one of the people who does remember this movie from when I was little. (it came out in spring '95.. my kindergarten year) yeah, Marina and Hubie. I remember them. I know there isn't much to be said about this movie as there is for the Land Before Time movies.

I do like the pebble and the penguin, it was the first penguin movie I ever remember coming out, and I do like "Pebble" over Happy Feet and Surf's up.

I do really enjoy your art of Marina, Gwynne, and the other girl penguins, Adder. I hope i've helped a little bit by bumping/updating the thread for you. I hope you get more members on the "pebble and the penguin" fansite. I don't know what to say. It's just that... the land before time and its 13 movies are more well known than "The Pebble and The Penguin."   BUT nevertheless I'm still a Marina and Gwynne fan and i'll continue to enjoy your "Pebble" art, Adder.

Really, i'd pick Marina over Gloria (from Happy Feet) or Lani (from Surf's Up) for favorite girl penguin cartoon character.

I wish you good luck in getting more members for your "Pebble and the Penguin" Fansite, Adder.  ;) I hope i've helped by bumping the thread.
