Title: Death Anniversary of a member of the 20 July Plot
Post by: Amaranthine on May 01, 2009, 02:49:44 PM
You can read about him here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philipp_von_Boeselager (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philipp_von_Boeselager)

He died May 1, 2008 at age 90.
He was the only survivor of the people that were part of the conspiracy to assassinate Hitler.
You can imagine what this guy went through to survive the trauma of it all. It's said that even when in his old age he had haunting memories of the plot and the deaths of the those people included in the plot.

RIP Phillips von Boeselager. We will never forget you.

I wonder if he was portrayed in the movie Valkyre with Tom Cruise which is about that conspiracy.

Wow, that's a really really tough thing to live with. May he rest in peace.

^ He was the last remaining member of the 20th of July plot, not the only one to survive the ruthless campaign of revenge launched in the aftermath of the assassination attempt. Remembering him one must not forget about those who did not live, but enabled him to, by not giving away his participation in the plot even under the torture.
I don't think he was portrayed in the movie Valkyre.

It probably said the "last surviving member..." which I think may easily be misunderstood as it is somewhat ambiguous.
On an earlier occasion he was assigned to shoot Hitler and Himmler, but the plan was stopped because Himmler did not appear at the meeting where it should have happened and it was felt that the risk of Himmler taking right over after the assassination of Hitler was too great.
He urged the young people to take part in political live to prevent any repetition of the events in the past. Some views expressed in the early 90s which drew a connection between the Holocaust and murdering of disabled people in the third Reich on the one and abortion on the other hand remain controversial.
