Replied, finally. I didn't mention Aquarius, I figured that TLD can decide who he's riding on :D

The past days of awkward trudging through the wasteland had done little to raise Wyoh's spirits. If there was one thing she could be glad of, it was that the conflict in the group seemed to have reached a low point. This was, however, merely the product of shared misery; after the daily march and struggle for food, there was no energy left to fight one another. Each day had dawned alike, hot and cloudless, the stream of time blending together in a haze of misery. She did her best to ignore the blistering wear of the bone-dry earth against her feet as they chased down mile after mile.

But then, the monotony broke. Buko lifted his hand in warning, and she slowed to a stop as she came up alongside him. Blinking down into the chasm that had opened out before them, it took her a moment to organize her thoughts well enough to respond to his question. Head east, or turn around? It was hardly a choice. She shrugged. "Let's go east." Though there was the certainty of food behind them, it was a feeble supply that would not last them long. They were probably dead either way, but heading into the unknown meant that maybe, just maybe, she would get to eat something other than a fish before she died. She had developed a distaste for the slimy, bony things, and the tiny dent they put in her hunger was hardly worth the trouble of catching them.

As her feet slammed into the damp earth, the only thing that existed for the threehorn girl was Littlefoot's shocked face, which consumed her field of vision. She didn't hear Ducky, or Petrie, or the crash of the thunder, or Chomper's rapid approach. The only warning she got of the interference was the sharptooth's solid head connecting with her side in a breath-taking blow.

At first, she couldn't understand what had happened. She blinked against the stinging drops of rain, discovering that her legs weren't beneath her and the horizon had a weird slant to it. She rolled onto her belly and shook her head, mud caked onto one side. Littlefoot was still ahead of her... but a purple two-footer stood between them. The situation suddenly clicked and she pushed herself to her feet, gritting her teeth against the indignity.

"So Chomper's fighting your battles now? Is that why he hasn't left yet? Are you going to tell him to eat me first when he gets big enough?" She spat. Her rage had been waylaid and now it festered, bitter and ineffective. There was no way she could start the charge again, but she wouldn't admit defeat.

Yeah, please share your ideas! I've been a bit MIA lately, but I should be more vocal about this once final exams are over :smile
I also have an idea for a possible award banner for this challenge that won't take up too much signature space, and might be a fun incentive. Details coming soon :P

Well, managed to get two more done before the deadline :p

Name of fanfiction: The Curse of Speed
Author: Rhombus
Rating: 8.5/10
Review: I enjoyed this one! Short and simple, but full of fun lore and a sweet moment for our favorite family of fastrunners :p The song/poem format is tough, and I think it was executed quite well here. Though there wasn’t much length to the story, I wasn’t bothered by it at all, and thought it worked very well as a fun cautionary tale.

Name of fanfiction: Scrambled Eggs
Author: OwlsCantRead
Rating: 8.5/10
Review: A really interesting “what-if” story that was very effective in conveying the possibly disastrous consequences of a decision. Particularly brilliant was the way you incorporated Littlefoot’s experiences with his mother’s death into his decision about Chomper. The main thing that threw me off about it was how absolutely cold-blooded Cera was. Her actions seemed like they’d be much more in-character for Topps. That’s my biggest issue, though. The ending was quite nice :smile

Wyoh knew what he was going to ask her. She continued to focus solely on arranging her feathers, and pretended not to notice as he walked over. She listened as he started to speak, and as his words continued, her preening slowed until she was completely still, her mind beginning to turn in new directions. He had given the decision to her, for both of them. Why?

It forced her into a role of responsibility. All at once, the situation took on a new light- if she chose poorly now, and something bad were to happen to him, it would be her fault. She rose to her feet, shifting uncomfortably as her tired legs complained. She looked across the river at the leaf-eaters, then back at Buko. “Okay, fine. But it that threehorn kills me, it’s your fault.” She huffed. At least she could throw a bit of the responsibility back at him.

Hey guys!
There are a couple of ways we could do next year's banners. If everyone wants to keep the same characters with a background and text change, that's fine, but I'm also willing to do new drawings to help differentiate them from last year's banners. I'll also renew my offer to participants of getting a new banner done with a character of your choice in case you'd like one with a different character this year :smile Just let me know what you all think.

I have to apologize yet again for the scarcity of reviews this year! I meant to do these in several sets including one for each author, but time really got away from me. Hopefully I can do better at keeping up with reviews in the future, as I really appreciate all of the wonderful reviews I’ve received on my modest attempts at writing :smile

Name of fanfiction: First Impressions
Author: Rhombus
Rating: 8.5/10
Review:
A cute little tale with good comedic timing! This felt almost like a script for a potential show episode, and I found it very enjoyable to read. Unfortunately the reveal of Dalmar covered in sweetbubble juice didn't feel like it was quite equal in impact to the way the situation was built up, though I understand what the author was going for. But that's really a minor complaint, and on the whole I think this piece works very well as a funny slice-of-life tale.

Name of fanfiction: (Legends and) Adventures of Sucky
Author: Ducky123
Rating: 8.5/10
Review:
Aaaah, Sucky. I’m so glad this spelling mistake turned into a full-fledged story. And there's something kind of cathartic in reading about a character who tries so hard and fails anyway, haha. On to the review- I loved it, of course! The storytelling format with the gang worked well, and I thought each “Sucky tale” succeeded in its own way. The diarrhea scene might have been a bit excessive for me, but that’s a minor complaint. As a whole this story really works as the quirky, funny, weirdly tragic tale that it is.

Name of fanfiction: Our Past and Our Future
Author: LBTlover247
Rating: 7.0/10
Review: A simple but effective story. It’s kind of refreshing to see an optimistic take on Chomper getting older and hungrier in the Great Valley, and I love how you handled his worries and eventual acceptance of eating the scaled swimmers. The heavy reliance on the voice of the ‘narrator’ to explain characters feelings was a bit cumbersome in the beginning, but it eased up by the end and the pace became much more enjoyable.

Name of fanfiction: Five Stages of Grief
Author: OwlsCantRead
Rating: 10/10
Review: Wow! This tale was incredibly emotional, and an exciting new twist on an old story. I love how you portrayed Ducky’s breakdown, and the consequences of her actions. The five stages of grief setup was also a creative and functional way to frame the story. Great job with this!

Name of fanfiction: A Swim of Silence
Author: DiddyKF1
Rating: 9.5/10
Review: A truly powerful tale. I thought the pacing worked well with interspersed with the scenes of Ducky going on her night swim, and these really helped to add to the somber atmosphere. The characters were well-written, and I loved the idea behind the fic. My one criticism is that I didn’t really like that you named the character Judy- it was a bit too on-the-nose for me, and I think the allegory would have come across fine without having to use her name. Other than that, this was a stirring and emotional piece.

Name of fanfiction: The Perils of the Deep
Author: Sovereign
Rating: 9.0/10
Review: I enjoyed this one a lot! I love Mo’s species and it was really cool to see their culture and one of their stories explored more here! You did a great job building tension, and I was drawn in all the way to the end. Really makes me want to see more LBT stories set underwater.

When everyone's had a chance to react I'll go ahead and post for Cera, likely escalating the confrontation even further  :smile
I'm wondering how we want this fight to end? I was thinking maybe after fighting a little more Cera could functionally cut all ties to the group and storm off, but I'm open to other ideas!

She hadn't wanted things to go any farther, at least not at first, but his snarky comment and the stupid smirk on his dumb flat face snapped something inside of her. If she backed off now she would look weak, and the longneck would win. With a sharp exhale, the puff of breath flinging the rain moisture from her snout in a thin mist, she squared her shoulders and dug her feet into the damp earth. And froze.

Some deep part of her was aware that this was dead serious, that either one of them could be badly injured, and if that happened there would be no going back. But her level sensibilities and her bond with the longneck had both been eroding together, and now they had been consumed at once in a blind rage. She didn't want to hurt him, but she was willing to, and that was the little bit of give that she needed.

"You'll regret that." She growled through clenched teeth and sprung forward into an all-out charge, horns lowered, clumps of earth flying behind her.

I guess I can escalate it with Cera, and then Chomper steps in?

Wyoh's indignation fizzled at the Swimmer's tired plea. His soft sincerity brought to mind images of her lost brother, and her heart ached for him, but the pain in her chest was enough to keep her anger seething beneath the surface. It was no surprise that she balked visibly at Buko's sudden concessions. She answered his questioning look with a huff of breath and a gruff shrug. She would follow them, of course- what else could she do? But she wasn't willing to admit that to herself just yet.

The tallcrest turned and walked a few paces along the bank, settling down to preen her abused feathers. Let them say whatever they wanted, she wasn't going to waste her breath.

Cera snorted and stomped her foot down heavily. The longneck had the nerve to look confused, and that irritated her more than almost any insult he could have thrown. "So, what? Was that supposed to be funny? Throwing seedpods at my dad during an important meeting, like some kind of stupid hatchling?"

Part of her recoiled. There was a time not all that long ago when she would have found it funny, but that felt like a sleepstory from a different life, before those stupid farwalker threehorns had come to stay. Now every single little failure could be used as a weapon against her. It was enough to drive anyone crazy, and it kept her rage building to a fever pitch.

The young threehorn tossed her head as she stared him down, showing off the two upper horns that had finally begun to grow in. As much as she hated the farwalkers, she had managed to learn a few hard lessons from them. It wasn't enough to get angry- you had to remind your opponent that you were dangerous. "Don't even bother apologizing if your tiny flathead brain can't figure out what you did wrong!" She spat, thunder echoing behind her words, the first drops of rain prickling her skin.
