Title: LBT Song Project: When You're On Youw Own
Post by: Mumbling on April 20, 2008, 03:10:33 PM
Hello there :D

*finished*

I'm opening a new singing project. This time the song 'When you're on your own' will be sung.

I'd like you to read this: http://z7.invisionfree.com/thegangoffive/i...?showtopic=1506 (http://www.gangoffive.net/index.php?topic=1362)These are some guidelines Action9000 once made about the singing, and I dont want to type them all over again :DD

I won't make my own background music, at least not yet. When I am able to I will.So if you want to, and I would really like to hear all of you, record your voice singing this song. Please nobackground music, so only your voice. Listen to the music by headphone. and then you send it to my mail. thelionqueen@live.nl thanks
Don't be afraid of your voice, I know the problem! :p

Please participate :lol

Those who will be singing(those who have send it already are like this):

Clawandfang
Dash The Longneck
Flathead770

Kjeldo
LBTFan13
Littlefoot1616
Malte279
Mumbling
Nimrod
Pokeplayer984

Vilstrup

Those who will play an instrument( :wow ) :

But what will we listen to while we record our singing? Shall we use the original song? Are you going to use that one for the background Iris? Is there a way to filter out the original Littlefoot voice?
It's really awesome that you are doing this Iris :yes

We're singing "When You're On Your Own" as a group? Oh, the irony, heh.
I suppose I'll send you something.... after some fairly heavy editing to make it sound reasonable (joking of course...well...maybe...heh). Can you give us some sort of timeframe? I ask this because I refuse to sing unless I'm completely out of earshot. This limits my possible recording time to a single hour every Tuesday afternoon, unless something out of the ordinary crops up (which is highly unlikely).
I seem to remember Action mentioning something about voice-removers not working with LBT songs, which is why he made his own (an extremely complex and time-consuming task, unless I miss my shot by a lightyear or two). For the time being at least we'll just have to drown Littlefoot out.

Are there particular file formats you'd prefer? Size limitations? Anything else which temporarily escapes me?

Its practically impossible to remove Littlefoot's voice without removing the timbres of other instruments as well.  Pluss it would be in monophonic sound.

I sent you a PM with an offer/solution, Mumbling. B)
I Highly recommend having a copy of the song on your computer so you can refer to it easily.  Since you've recorded this before with your family, you probably already have this. :p If you don't, check my website for the songs (see signature).

The way I did it was extremely time-consuming.  If you just make a basic mockup as a General MIDI, an experienced mockup producer can make the background music in as little as 3-4 hours probably.  I'm known for taking upwards of 20 hours in my background music, simply due to the complexity of the layering in my arrangements (this relates to the complexity of the virtual instruments I use, which function best when using many layers), as well as my attention to detail.  I've done simple mockups of 4-minute songs in less than 2 hours before.  It all comes down to how much detail you want.

[EDIT] I added some comments to my recording tutorial, which I'll post here for easy access:

"My recording has a lot of background noise or *hiss*ing.  How can I fix this?
Try setting the microphone's volume lower while recording.  We prefer a quieter recording with less noise over a loud recording with a lot of noise.  It's easy to make a quiet recording louder.  It's nearly impossible to remove hissing.  Also, see tips in the next section to possibly improve the sound further.

The recording has a loud, low-pitched buzzing sound.
Is your wiring from your microphone or mic cable near a source of EMI (electrical noise) such as a computer, speaker, power wiring or power source?  Try moving the wire.  Also, make sure the wire that connects your microphone to your computer is nice and tight on both ends.  Worst case, your sound card isn't very good for recording with.  Typically, laptop sound cards and some onboards desktop sound cards are pretty poor for recording quality.

My recording has a very high-pitched shrieking sound.
Turn off any nearby TVs and CRT monitors while recording.

Also, if your computer is very loud when it's running (due to fan noise, etc.), try to move as far away from the computer as possible when recording."

Make sure your mouth isn't *too* close or *too* far away from the microphone when recording.
"Point the top of the microphone directly at the front of your mouth, holding it one or two inches away and just under the lips. Don't touch the microphone "windscreen" with your lips, or hold the microphone to one side of your mouth. Mp3 or Wav are the easiest to work with, at least they were for me.  As for other specs:
No size limit unless Mumbling wants to enforce one
Sampling rate: please use 44100Hz (44.1kHz) or higher.  The result will likely be downsampled to 44.1kHz (though this is entirely Mumbling's choice.  I used 44.1kHz because my virtual instruments are all 44.1kHz) so recording higher will just waste space for the sake of this project (pros would argue that recording higher is better but for the sake of this, I don't see a point.)
Mono preferred.  Stereo just wastes space unless you're actually recording with 2 microphones in a stereo configuration.

I'll let Mumbling make the final calls though.  She's in charge now. B)  I'm just a backseat driver. :lol

I may be able to do recordings on a weekend when I'm not in the flatshare where I'm living at the moment. Not only would the singing be "problematic" with my flatmates, but there is also a lot of background noise here with a large road and a tram right in front of my windows.

Thanks, Action. Sorry guys for my late respond.

Yes wav and mp3 files are the easiest for me to work with. No sizelimit.

@Malte, I'm using the normal song. I'm learning how to create my own one now, but it won't be for this one as I don't know for sure if I can manage or not. So just listen to the normal song with littlefoot singing.

I'll keep a list of those who are joining.

And a question to all of you: can anyone create a little banner for the signature? I dont know who normally does that...  :slap

Just remember that if people are recording while listening to the original song, you won't have the option of making your own background music and putting the voices to it Unless you can make 100% sure that the tempo of your remake Exactly matches that of the original song.  This is vital to ensure that the voices are in sync with the music.

This is why I always encouraged everyone to sing to the background music I prepared for them.  If you intend to make your own background music, you may want to hold off on getting peoples' recordings unless you're very confident that you can match the tempo of the original song exactly.

You mentioned that we won't have background music for this song, so we'll use the original throughout the duration of this project.  Cool. :)

StarfallRaptor, I've got one question for yer.
Are you thinking of playing Violin to the song, instead of singing?

Many people join... :D

Yes, I'll keep it to the original song, just for everyone who wants to be sure.

I hope my voice will be normal again, because I'd like to sing myself too  :lol ..

Nice that you play the violin, I hope I Can place it in the song .. :)

Hello.. Totally at the beginning of this project people asked me about the original song, and if we would hear littlefoot on the background.
I've got 3 options:

- We use the original song with littlefoot clearly heared.
- We use this song (http://www.adrive.com/home/downloadfile/28238668) (where I used voice remover on)
- I compose the song from the instrumental pieces you send me.

I probably am going to try all three of them, and see which one looks best. But if you prefer any of these 3, please say so  :) .

This would likely give us the best results.  I won't have time to work out and send you more than a couple of the instrumental parts, so unless others contribute as well we won't have anything very close to the complete score.

I'll see what I can do though.

This is my 2nd preferred option.  I'm really not a fan of voice removers.

I'll start doing performances of When You're On Your Own today and I'll send you anything I complete.

http://search3.idrive.com/driveway/jsp/dwa...p?id=x7q4k8o9z8 (http://search3.idrive.com/driveway/jsp/dway_download.jsp?id=x7q4k8o9z8)

I plan on refining this trumpet part considerably, so you may not want to do anything with this.  It's here if you want to play around though, or in the event that I don't get a chance to send you anything else. B)

Here's the Trumpet 1 part I performed.  For the most part, it's simply the main melody.  The section from 1:05 is a little improv stuff which I thought could be useful if you wanted to do something with it.

I'll start working on some other cool stuff now, less related to the main melody.  I mainly did this for myself, so I actually *know* the notes to the melody in this song.  :lol  I've never worked with this song before today. :p   I know we don't really need melody parts so much as background parts (that's what the singers are for!), so I'll see what I can do about that.

I timed this file so that if you insert it *exactly* when the original music track starts playing, it will be in sync.

i'm going to have very little time to work on anything this weekend.  I have to go to work. :(

Are we going to try and produce some background music or are we going to use the original?  Because here's what I'm thinking:

if we're going to use the original song, I can just write some instrumental parts to sit on top of the existing music.  If we're making something from scratch, I'll need to write parts for instruments that already exist (piano, guitar, etc.).  Right now, I'm just adding new instruments and completely new parts, not necessarily present in the original, to fill in the sound and make it a little more original.

I don't think I'd have time to reproduce the complete arrangement by the end of the month, with the way my schedule looks.  I could do a simple one, without attempting to capture every single detail of the original, just getting the important parts so that the vocals work.  That's probably all I'd have time for.

This song is a pain too because it's in 6/8 time...which, I have to admit, it a little bit of a pain in FL Studio. :p  Do-able, for sure, but just a little more of a pain.

Well, how about this?

We said early on in this project that we would be singing to the original song for this one.  Let's go with that as a final decision.

I will focus on recording some other instrumental parts into the song.

That would be sweet, unfortunately i don't have the time right now, with diplomas coming up and such. Not to mention i would only have 6 days left to do it. Maybe for the next singing project.

Hey Mumbling!  Here's the final version of the instrumental parts for our song!  I used Megaupload instead of Driveway because Driveway seems to hate me for some reason. :p
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=HOE7T0GR (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=HOE7T0GR)

This is a 32-bit WAV file, which is the highest possible quality I can send you (well Technically I can make a 64-bit WAV but....yeah :p).  The file is 41MB.
(I meant to make it a 24-bit .WAV but apparently I fail at saving files. :p)

If you want a smaller file (like a 16-bit WAV or an mp3), if this file doesn't work in your audio editor, or if you need the instruments seperated into individual files, let me know and I can get you what you need. :)

Yo Mumbling!

Sorry I didn't get my recording to you...I was having some issues with the recording software I was using and it wasn't saving and exporting correctly <_< Needless to say, looks like I've missed the boat AGAIN! At least this time it was due to a technical hitch rather than my sheer laziness  :P: By the time I re-record the sample and get it to you it will be far too late...oh well...ner' mind  :^.^:

Of course, there's one thing I feel needs to be pointed out before FULL judgement can be given.  Simply, who played what part?

Okay well here is who sung what:

Nimrod, Flathead770:                              When you're on your own

Nimrod, Flathead770:                              life is so exciting!

Nimrod, Flathead770:                              When you're on your own,

Nimrod, Flathead770:                               the world is big and wide.

Mumbling:                                               You can do what you want,

Mumbling:                                               and go where ya like,

Malte, Mumbling:                                     with just your shadow by your side.

Pokeplayer:                                             When you're on your own,

Pokeplayer:                                             you can yell and laugh and holler!

Pokeplayer, nimrod:                                When you're on your own,

Nimrod:
                                                 you're feeling strong and free.

Nimrod, Dash The Longneck:                    You can play all night,

Nimrod, Dash The Longneck:                     and sleep all day,

Nimrod, Dash The Longneck:                     and be whatever you want to be!

Clawandfang, Pokeplayer:    You can be a hero,

Clawandfang, Pokeplayer:
                     bold and brave;

Clawandfang, Flathead770:                        with lots of grand adventures

Clawandfang, Flathead770:                        and the whole world to save!

Nimrod, Malte:                                         When you're on your own

Nimrod, Malte:                                        You have to be the grown-up,

Clawandfang, Mumbling:                          'cause there's no one there

Clawandfang, Mumbling:
to tell you what to to.

Clawandfang, Dash the longneck:              But you miss your friends

Clawandfang, Dash the longneck:              when daylight ends

Flathead770:                                           and there's no one there to care for you.

Flathead770:
                                           It's kind of lonely

Pokeplayer, Malte:                                   When you're on your own...

Clawandfang, Nimrod:                               When you're on your own...

Dash the longneck, Mumbling, flathead770: Own your own...

The trumpet was played by Action9000 :) And the keyboard by Nimrod. Good job guys!

Landbeforetimelover got the intro on Things Change.

As for who I picked to sing intros:
I like to start off the song as musically as I possibly can, so the audience gets a good first impression of the song.  I pick the recording that sounds the nicest to sing the intro.
if you ended up in one of my intros, it means I thought you sounded really good on it. :)

Oh, and Mumbling?
