In celebration of the Season 2 Premiere, Lauren Faust has put up some original sketches on her DeviantART. I'll comment on a few.

First off, Apple Bloom was originally named Appleseed.

Her name was changed due to copyright issues.

Second, when it was thought to put a Manticore in the two-part pilot, there was worry that such a creature would be too scary for kids. So Lauren decided to tone it down a bit.

After presenting it, she was told it wasn't scary enough. (Make up your minds, ya hypocrites.)

Finally, originally, Fluttershy wasn't a Pegasus.

Not sure why they changed it, but with all they've done with Fluttershy, I'd say it was for the better.

Fluttershy was originally an Earth Pony while Pinkie Pie was originally a pegasus. They switched it around due to the contrast it made; Pegasus Pony who is more down to earth while an Earth Pony has just about as much energy, maybe even more than, a regular Pegasus Pony.

Plus, Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie were originally going to be Posey and Surprise from the G1 Series, but due to copyright issues, they had to change it around.
