Title: Favorite Animated Films outside of LBT.
Post by: WeirdRaptor on April 03, 2005, 07:21:48 PM
List which animated films are your favorites why are they your favorites, and after few have replied, we can discuss further what makes them so special to you.

I'll just start this off with my list:

1. The Last Unicorn

Why: An interesting twist on old European fables, with a pretty unusualy and dramatic plot to boat. This film also shows that you can make a cartoon with an audience, other than children, in mind.

2. The Lion King

Why: This is the closest Disney will ever get to touching the greatness of Shakespear. And it was something to behold, even if it did never did hold to a candle to "Hamlet".

3. Dinosaur

Why: An interesting and very mature twist on the usual story centered around leaf-eating dinosaurs. This is probably very close to what Don Bluth had originally had in mind for "The Land Before Time".

4. Balto

Why: Based on the true story of a heroic wolf-dog who saved a town. Wonderfully brought to life in a very dark, yet enjoyable setting with a few unforgettable comic relief character and interestind dialogue.

5. The Hobbit

Why: Back before we could have three hour epics based on Tolkien's work, this was the very best we had, and even though it just couldn't totally grasp Tolkien's complex world, it still offered much enjoyment.

6. Watership Down

Why: Another somewhat forgotten classic that proves that you don't need a cartoon to be centered at children to make a great film. Dark and gritty, full of interesting characters, and a new twist on how we view rabbits. If you're expecting a typical "cute bunny" story, look elsewhere.

7. Princess Mononoke

Why: Although I am generally not a fan of anime, this one made up for the terrible animation with story, plot, character, and attitude. THis film really packs a punch.

8. The Flight of Dragons

Why: Interesting concept, unusual plot, interesting and unusal characters, and a very different twist on old fairy tales. Makes for a good viewing if you're in the mood for animated entertainment not aimed at kids.

9. Mulan

Why: I've always liked "Joan of Ark" and Chinese folklore. This is the best of both worlds.

10. The Black Cauldron

Why: Another prime example of a classic animated film not aimed at kids.

In absolutely random order:

1.)  Watership Down (1978) - mostly watched it because I loved the book, and it certainly kept the dark aspects of the book alive; very nice job with the watercolors

2.)  The Plague Dogs (1982) - probably one of the darkest animated films I've ever seen because they don't hide the truth; based on a book about animal testing and these dogs do literally go out and kill sheep (and eat a human)

3.)  Bambi (1942) - the storyline is short and to the point, the deer grows up and moves on even with the loss of his mother; also it's a cultural reference when looking towards what was popular in terms of music in the 40s  (I can just see people walking around singing "Let's Sing a Gay Little Spring Song" today)

4.)  Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) - one of a kind; never again will you see animated characters from multiple studios in one film together because studios have large egos these days; combined live-action and animation without a computer and I'm just amazed by the result; it's quite "adult" in nature with the cussing and sex references (the probate-prostate mixup by Roger)

5.)  Finding Nemo (2003) - perhaps (my opinion) the best film created using CGI in its entirety thus far in terms of visual effects and storyline; soundtrack jumps all over the place but that's ok

I'd say those are a good start.  I'm probably forgetting others that I have certain reasons for liking (or hating).

WFRR was an absolute classic, the last hurrah for great voice actors like Mel Blanc. Everytime I see, I laugh at the controlled mayhem that populated Toon Town.

I've altogether watched much less movies in my live than the average person. I cannot hardly contribute any new movie to the list (exceptions are "Ice Age" and "Monsters Inc." both of which are movies I like though it is by any means even nearly comparable to my devotion for LBT. I cannot give any kind of special order to the movies I like:
Lion King, Finding Nemo, The black Cauldron (I watched this one only very recently, but I had known the sound of the movie for ages as I have an audio play of it), Dinosaur (In fact it may be very much like what George Lucas rather than Don Bluth had in mind during the production of LBT. George Lucas had hoped for a movie with realistic dinosaur puppets rather than an anymation movie. According to Bluth Lucas grieved for being overruled).

Two other movies I might add are "Tarzan" and "The animals of Farthing wood". The reason for me not to add them is that I didn't watch either of them completely (in case of Tarzan the beginning, in case of "The animals of Farthing wood" some sequels).

Hold it!
There is one more I must add!
"The Iron giant".
A lovely story!

Indeed it was since he died soon after. :(  The real shame is that since Roger is owned by Disney and Dreamworks 50/50 (Speilberg's price for getting the rights for Warner characters to be put in the film) that Roger cannot be put anywhere without permission from the other party.  Nice Vista release with all the details on how the film was made though. :D

Malte, I've heard the the Iron Giant was actually a nice film but poor marketing killed any chance it would have had over here since it generally wasn't known about.  I think I saw one commercial for it and that was it.

You mention that Lucas was upset at being overruled...I've heard alot about Speilberg having a lot of say in LBT, but nothing on what Lucas actually did.  Maybe Speilberg said no as well since he already had Roger Rabbit being released that year with live action???

Here's my list so far in no order:

1.  Mulan.  An excellent blend of Disney and Chinese Folklore.  I hope for more animated movies from the Far East. (this does not include anime, though)

2.  Balto.  Great plot based on a real canine hero.

3.  Dinosaur.  One of the few CG movies I really liked, not that too different from LBT.

4.  The Lion King.  Another one of my favorite Disney movies, with great animation, music, voice actors, and story plot.

5.  Fantasia (and Fantasia 2000).  Amazingly enough, because of watching these film, I have a bigger appreciation for classical music.

I might add more later.

Oh boy! Animated films! Where to begin!?! Think it's better for me to list them in categories rather than individually since I probably take up the entire allowed data space! LOL  :lol

1. CGIs - To me, Pixar can do no wrong! From Toy Story right up to The Incredibles. I love them all. Probably Finding Nemo stands out to me a bit more than the others but I'd watch Pixar films over and over and never get bored! A Bug's Life didn't click with me as much but I'd still watch it. Ice Age is another classic I'll watch over and over. Just the gags in it are timeless and as for poor Stratch...will he every get a nut to bury that WON'T land him in hot water?! LOL  :DD Shrek's another CGI great and I still don't own it - Shock Horror! -

2. Disney - In recent years, I've kinda strayed away from Disney in terms of their animated pictures. Brother Bear didn't really catch me and neither did Home on the Range. Lion King is supreme but I also liked Lilo and Stitch, Tarzan, Mulan and Pocahontas (Meeko and Flit crack me up) amongst others.

3. Manga - My interest in animation also has a dark, sinister side. I adore Japanese animes and manga films. Pokemon has come and gone but I enjoy the grotesque and somewhat explict violence of movies like Devilman, Ghost in the Shell, Ninja Scroll and Winds of Amnesia. Some of the stuff in these movies are so graphic it's shocking! The higher age-rated movies are definitely not for the weak-hearted or those who shiver at the sight of blood coz believe me! Blood flows like a river in certain flicks! :wow The Japs cannot be beaten when it comes to animation in my opinion. There's techniques, renditions and styles are sublime!

4. Others - There are also other miscellaneous animations I like. E.g. Most of Don Bluth's other flicks, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, a lot of Cartoon Network cartoons like Dexter's Lab, Ed, Edd and Eddy. I love Lilo and Stitch: the series. It's always guaranteed to give me a giggle. Going old school, you got Tom and Jerry, Looney Tunes, Magic Roundabout, Dangermouse, Thundercats, Transformers...ahhh! Animation heaven!!!  :DD

There are so many others I just can't name them all. Take this as a slight insight into what animation I like but the list goes on...and on and on and on and on...

I think you get the idea! ;)

Here is my list

1. Dinosaurs the movie

why - It came out around 1992 and it a old film but great to watch, in this film you have humanoid like dinosaurs fighting against bone head humans (the other types to our race that died out during the ice age.) even though it more looking like real life then animation

2. Flight of Dragons

why - I love this film because of the layout. it so cool and there is no lack of storyline to make it dull.

3. Dinosaurs

why - it might be a animated one with dinosaurs walking to the nesting grounds. it does remind me of LBT but in CG animation instend of cartoon animation which makes it cool!. Also when this was released BBC news showed a short clip of the rock landing in the distance on the film when talking about risks of being hit by a rock in space  :lol

4. Cats and Dogs

why - maybe I say this because it a funny film showing them with emitons and other funny stuff that makes it a cool film to watch

5. Well if I had to say this list could be going for a long time since I have tons of favs. I will tell you a list of the ones I like.
Doctor Who
Star Trek
MIB
Dinosaurs We're back a Dinosaur story
Kangroo Jack
Shrek
Shark tale
And many more... or this list might go on for a while  :lol

Scooby Doo is my favorite cartoon. Sure the plot is basically the same every time, but its hilarious to watch Shaggy and Scooby run away from every monster, dress up in disguises that work for a moment, and the endless amount of food they eat. I'm A Scooby nut :D
Anime- shows like Inuyasha and Witch Hunter Robin are my type of Anime. I especially like the ending songs. Can't understand a word, but they're still cool to listen too.

Rooby Rooooo!    Scooby Doo got worse the longer it was on the air.  The only good episodes that I like are the 1969/1970 ones, and a select few of the ones with the celebrities in 1973.  Anything beyond that really just got repetitive (and the laugh track got really out of line).  Scrappy was the worse thing they did.

I grew up on Bugs Bunny and all the Looney Tunes characters.  I didn't watch any of the Nickelodeon or Disney stuff.  Yeah, it's full of tobacco, guns, and sex metaphors but I didn't really care...they were out to make you laugh and that they did. :)

I don't think that "Cats and Dogs" and the "Looney Toons" skips really count as movies, but I'll allow it, just try to stay more on topic from now on.

People have said many times, and I even say it to myself sometimes. "I have weird taste in movies and music."

I thought it was good though...I guess it's because I just like odd abnormal things...which is something that Mr. Bakshi is known for.

I guess there is no need to. Personally I find such "middle of the road characters" where you can't tell straight away whether they are "good" or "bad" (if these terms can even be applied) more fascinating than the outright villains or heroes.

Hmmmmmm..... Outside of LBT I'd say my favorites would be Inuyasha and Death Note.  I've tried watching other shows targeted to the same age audience that LBT is and I didn't like them too much.  Other shows on CN such as Ben10, My gym parters a monkey, fairly odd parents (or something along those lines), and transformers just don't appeal to me at all.  LBT is the only animated show I watch that's targeted at such a young audience.  I've watched lots of anime shows too, but I can't stand them unless they're in Japanese.  They just don't seem right in English. -_-

In conclusion, I only like LBT and a few anime shows I can watch in Japanese.  I've watched both Inuyasha and Death note in English and the shows just didn't seem quite right.  I couldn't tell you why.

Because it was all a mind game and was very exciting.  The ending sucked pretty badly though.  Like they ran out of money and just ended it or something.  It just goes to show you that even individuals with the best intentions cannot keep themselves from turning evil and becoming corrupted when they have ultimate power.  Watching it in Japanese was exciting as well.  I learned a lot of new words because the show used all these odd words I've never heard before.  I spent a lot of the time with an English-Japanese dictionary when watching that show. :lol

I might try to watch the show sometime. The only bit of it I saw was from the first episode when Light tries the notebook for the first time, and some random Youtube Poop of the last episode that Clint wanted me to see. Oh and I've seen some funny fancomics of it on DeviantArt.

I love animation so this is a really tough one.  :)littlefoot
I don't know much about Japanese animation though so I probably won't touch that in this post.

The most recent animated movie that greatly blew my mind was Inside Out! Wow, that movie just knocked it out of the park! I have almost nothing to pick on with that movie; it wasn't afraid to take a lot of risks, it didn't try to have a happy ending, it just did its own thing with the premise it had...and it's probably the strongest animated movie I've seen in decades.

Aladdin is still probably my favorite Disney animated movie in terms of movies I can watch again and again. The scenery is immaculate, Aladdin is so expressive, the climax is great fun to watch, the songs are among the best I've seen in any animated film. Honestly...that's a big part of it for me. This is one of the few animated movies, at least for me, where every single song is awesome. Nothing annoying, nothing with obnoxious parts, just TONS of fun and beautiful performances in every single song.

I wanted to give this honour of "favorite Disney movie" to The Lion King but....ehh, I like it but I feel like the whole middle of the movie just isn't all that strong. It has a LOT of AMAZING parts and it's 90% of the way there but at the end of the day I find Aladdin, as a whole, is a better experience to me.

Beauty and the Beast is another amazing honourable mention. I put this as a very close second to Aladdin as my favorite Disney movie. Ultimately I'm favouring Aladdin because, while Beauty and the Beast is absolutely outstanding as a film, I just personally prefer the theme in Aladdin. Arabian Knights and magic trumps Middle-ages France in terms of raw awesomeness for me any day.

I love Beauty and the Beast but Aladdin is probably my pick for favorite "classic" Disney movie.

At this current time though, if I had to vote for "best animated movie", I'd have a hard time not picking Inside Out. Wow, that one just blew me away.  :!  :exactly

-----

Some other honourable mentions which are way up there for me:

Tangled (Holy crap this is a hilarious movie!)

Wreck-It Ralph (definitely better than I expected and legitimately VERY-well put-together!)

Kung-Fu Panda (1): This was surprisingly entertaining as heck! I'm not sure if it would hold up a second viewing but it was really cool the first time!!

I still love Land Before Time X: The Great Longneck Migration. I think it's one of the better direct to video Sequels.
