I was searching for general books and reviews on the internet about the LBT when I came upon this:

http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=25665

Scroll down to the part about the Land before time film and his book, according to William Stout, the Land before time storyline was heavily influenced by his children’s book. I’ve managed to find the book on eBay, and I would say that there are certain scenes in the book which may have been an influence on the film, but I wouldn’t say that the LBT film ripped of the book in terms of storyline apart from the fact that both main protagonists want to get back to their herd. I could post pictures of the children’s book, but I don’t know about the issue over copyright, I do know that it’s been out of print for a long time.

Hmm...Yeah I can see a bit of Littlefoot in that character. I wonder if they have it at Borders or Barnes & Noble?

I dont see why posting the pics would be an issue with the book out of print.
I'd like to see the connection between the two.

Well this might end up like the whole kimba the white lion vs. simba from the lion king thing.

Almost certainly not. Not only was LBT XII made eighteen years later by completely different people, but Guido's species hadn't even been discovered at that time. My guess is that Guido's character was inspired by all the news reports on Microraptor gui that came out when its discovery was announced.

I've never heard of this book before, so I have no idea what roles the characters on the cover have in the story, but if LBT was in any way based off of it, I wonder if the Archaeopteryx could have been the inspiration for Petrie. From what I can see, it actually looks kind of like him.

The titular brontosaurus looks to me more like Dink from Dink, the Little Dinosaur. :p

Pronounced "pan-JEE-uh". Spelled with three A's. Represented by a Lystrosaurus.

As I can recall, when Don Bluth wanted to make The Land Before Time movie, he started reading all of the books about Dinosaurs that he could get his hands on to understand how they all worked and to get inspiration on them.  There were plenty of Children's Books on Dinosaurs at the time, so I wouldn't be surprised if some of the inspiration came from a number of those.

I'd say that just about every book on Dinosaurs that was around at the time deserves some credit for inspiring such an amazing movie.

I remember that several years ago there was a thread about a book that was considered likely to have provided inspiration for the land before time. I think it may have been this one, but I cannot remember for sure anymore.

Is that stegosaurus a character?
Yeah but the stegosaurus has only a minor role in the book,  I'll have to post some pics sometime this week when I've got time. I'll try and clean up some of the images, as I bought a second hand library copy and it shows! lol.

Rather than post some 40 odd images, I've managed to scan it into low quality jpeg format, and I've posted it on megaupload. although I've haven't got the experience with photoshop to get rid of some of the felt tip marks with dot the various pages.

I just downloaded the pictures, but I got them as a single RAR file, and I don't know how to open it. :confused If you know how (e.g., what application I need to use), could you please tell me? (I have a Mac computer, if that's significant in any way.)

You can use WinRAR to open it. There are other programs you can use. I tend to use WinRAR. There is a trial you can get, but you can still use it after the trial expires. It'll just annoy you with a pop-up.

Once you install WinRAR, right click the image and click Extract Here.

There's only a command-line version of WinRAR for OS X (no user interface), but here, I found something similar:

http://www.unrarx.com/

It's open-source, so it's free. ;)
