Hollywood will just about try to adapt anything, won't they? So who else wants to put down ten bucks that this'll become a live-action Pokemon film, essentially?

What's next? Everyone Poops: The Movie?

I might as well be the first to say...

This looks awesome!

I'm a little biased though, considering I'm a huge dragon fan... but whatever.

Still waiting for the innevitable Temeraire movie, though... *fingers crossed*

I love dragons. I seriously do. But...I don't know about this movie. The dragon doesn't even look like a dragon. Looks more like a cat with wings. Another thing that sort of irks me: A Viking named Hiccup...really? Wouldn't that be a more appropriate name for the dragon and not a viking? What parent, even if they are a viking, would be so cruel as to name their son HICCUP?

The story looks like it could be good if they tried to actually make it serious. I mean a dragon and a human trying to better the relations between the two races could make for an amazing and dramatic fantasy story but sadly, from the looks of the trailer, they're gonna go down that tired old comedy route again. Why not just do a movie that is serious with some funny, lighthearted moments instead of a movie that only has a serious moment near the end?

I know I'm being cynical towards this movie. But I can't help it. Dragons are my favorite animal, real or not. I just think Dreamworks has a chance to actually make this a memorable film but the way it looks right now I seriously doubt it...

It does look like a comedy aimed at young kids, instead of being done serious with a bit in it for folks of different ages able to like, with some comedy put in here and there.

I think this is why I tend to avoid Dreamworks movies like the plague. It's the same formula over and over again: A half baked story that is thrown away for lame poop and pop culture jokes, celebrity voice apperances, physical humor and CGI. Just once I'd like to see them try to at least make a movie that appeals to all ages. I mean I liked Shrek (the first one) but that was because it had a little of something for everyone.

Just because a movie is aimed at kids doesn't mean it can't be a serious flick. Look at Don Bluth's work.  Look at Disney films like Lion King and Aladdin. Serious kids movies with light hearted moments thrown in. They don't sacrifice story for lame jokes or annoying references.

How to Train Your Dragon looks like it has potential but from what I've seen from the trailer, it looks like it'll just be your run-of-the mill Dreamworks film. I hope they release one more trailer. Maybe it'll be enough to change my mind on this.

Well to bump an old topic, I just saw the second trailer for this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HRbLJ2GEtns (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HRbLJ2GEtns)  Now is it true that the opening score was straight from Disney's Dinosaur? How is that possible? And why are they showing us montages of their films when they haven't even been around as long as Disney and Pixar have? Not to mention they don't even have as good a reputation as Disney and Pixar do.

My review for the trailer. Also a Toy Story 3 review. http://animeboye.deviantart.com/journal/29430058/#comments (http://animeboye.deviantart.com/journal/29430058/#comments)

Well, unlike the few people that commented on this, I LOVE Dreamworks and their animated films and this movie happens to appeal to me. :)

True, the dragon looks a bit...odd...but I don't know...it just looks good because of the whole "the biggest and the strongest are the best" and I sort of feel that way as someone who is not great in sports. It makes me think of a movie about Autism, a different generation coming up and being different then the generation before them.

initial reviews are promising, and I get the feeling it will be a good deal of fun for the kids. The 3rd trailer and the review I saw on TV make it look like a pretty action packed adventure, with a rather standard plot. I'll be seeing it 2d, since I hate all that gimmicky 3d stuff, but I'm still looking forward to it as a fun movie.

And, it has dragons. DRAGONS!

That trailer made me wanna puke.  And I thought Shrek was bad...

Seriously, I love dragons too.  But I just can't see this becoming a decent movie with the way the way the trailer portrays it.  The story is good overall, but the cheesiness of the thing makes me sick.  Talk about a way to scam a quick buck out of people.  It's the classic ploy of making a VERY simple story, embellishing it with a bunch of dry/crude humor, and riding on the back of other successful movies in order to make a quick buck.  I wouldn't even pirate this. :neutral

^ You forgot one thing, landbeforetimelover: using a cutsie character with no personality to sucker people in. In the three trailers I watched, I found nothing intresting or cute about Toothless. Its design is uncreative and even a little ugly. Why not have just stuck to the original design? A small, green, talking baby dragon? That would have been intresting and even provided some depth between the protagonists.

The story may be good, but it's been told before and it's been told better. Hiccup is the generic underdog we've seen in many a movie. A nobody at the beginning with zero confidence but quickly becomes a hero, gets the girl, discovers his self worth and makes everything right in the world. If you've played RPGs or watched shonen anime, then you know exactly how this story will go.

Dont like it? dont watch it. You cant always have everything being "perfect". Not anything to see at the theaters(Saving that for Clash of the Titens and Prince of Persia! dont care if people say "eww, a movie based on a game! It's gonna stink!")

As for the movie? I think it looks like a cute movie! But as i said: It's not anything i would watch at the theaters..

EDIT: I think the Dragon looks cute!  :(

I don't recall saying I want this to be "perfect". I don't expect this to be Citizen Kane or Shakespeare for kids. All I did was express my opinion on this movie. You think it looks cute. That's YOUR opinion. I don't think it looks good. That's MY opinion. I'm not trying to make people hate this movie or not want to see it. What others do shouldn't and doesn't worry me. If they like the movie, fine. If they don't, that's fine as well. But what I don't like is when people expect others to be saying nothing but positive things about a film before its release. The point of discussion is just that: To discuss your feelings on something, not to say "This looks good. Yep. I agree.". That's why forums like these exist.

If people can't share their thoughts on a movie, even if they don't think it will be good, then why discuss the movie in question in the first place?

I would totally dig a Citizen Kane for kids. Rosebud would be a talking sled and everything! It would be awesome, and incredibly bizarre.

Anywho, final thoughts on what I've seen so far. Looks promising and fun, the key word being FUN. I intend to have fun seeing this, that is all. That's why I go to movies, to have a good time. I don't need an epic story about settling differences or amazing characterization and all that stuff.

Actually now that I think about it, we're arguing over some trailers and stuff... so please don't get too carried away folks.

It might have something to do with the fact that the same guy directed Lilo and Stitch.  Anyway, I just got back from seeing the movie and I enjoyed it.  I'll definately be buying it on DVD when it comes out.  I thought Toothless was adorable.  I definately recommend seeing it.

Saw it a while ago in 2d. It was pretty good overall. The most annoying part isn't with anything in the movie itself, but the fact it has almost NOTHING to do with the book. Just the names and locations, really. The book is waaaaay waaaay better. Nothing special plot wise, the trailer played things up a bit...

There's a creative little twist at the end, though, that plays on the "oh no he is dead oh wait he's alive!" trope. Otherwise, it was fairly cliche, but not overblown... and as such, it was enjoyable and fun.

In the end though, I liked it, and I'll be getting it on Blu-ray for certain when it comes out.

I thought Toothless was adorable.

My sister was like "OH MY GOSH HE'S SO CUUUUUUTE <3", but I do agree. The different dragons were a breath of fresh air as compared to your typical western dragons, what with all the cool designs they came up with (especially when Hiccup is flipping through that "dragon fighting" book, there's some cool dragons in there). I personally thought the big guy at the end was AWESOME, tons of eyes and huuuuge... and then he EXPLODED!

Possible sequel, too. But to be honest, I hope they don't...

So I just saw this movie earlier today. I've gotta say I'm surprised by how good it was. I really thought it was just going to be your generic, run of the mill Dreamworks flick but...dang! The animation was really impressive and a lot of it looked awfully real.

Sorry Jittery but I thought the trailers didn't do this movie any justice. They really didn't make this movie look as good as it was. If anything, I would say they downplayed it by alot.

But yeah I take back all the crap I said previous to the movie's release. I was surprised by how dark some of it was and the love intrest wasn't even half as annoying as I thought she'd be(thank God they dropped the valley girl talk from the trailers). And I gotta admit, Toothless was actually pretty cool!

The only thing I couldn't stand was how they made the characters spell everything out for the audience. Yeah some of it may not make sense to the younger kids but still...

So yes, very good movie. I'd actually go as far as to say that this is to the current generation what LBT is to ours. Now if only Dreamworks were to continue doing movies like this...

First ill say this:

i am a huge fan of anything Pixar. i love all their movies. only ones i havent seen is Finding Nemo and A Bug's Life.

i also tend to avoid Dreamworks movies. the only ones ive seen are Over the Hedge and How to Train your Dragon.

i saw this on sunday, didnt know what to expect or anything, just that it was getting good reviews...

now i will dare say, this movie is on par, if not better than most of what Pixar has offered so far. it is incredible.

everything in the movie is so well done. its a basic plot, but its told with such a level of care and detail that it is simply an amazing experience.

the movie is only enhanced even further by the soundtrack. this is one of the best movie soundtracks ive ever heard, especially the track named "Test Drive". i dare say, also that it rivals the quality of the Lion King and TLBT's soundtrack.

this is NOT your typical Dreamworks movie, filled with high profile voice actors and a ton of cultural references.

i highly recommend this movie to everyone, of all ages. go see it in 3D. i highly doubt you'll leave the theater feeling disappointed.

peace

Being a fan of the depiction of good dragons, I was planning to see this movie the minute I heard about it. Let's see...I loved Toothless and the dragon characters, found some of Hiccup's actions annoying (for the first half or so of the film I found myself siding with Gobber and Stoick more often...at least when he was asking questions in the middle of training), and the ending caught me off guard. I plan to buy the DVD as soon as it comes out.

I have to ask though, was I the only person who didn't go "...um" when Stoick gives Hiccup the "matching" helmet? I was looking at it from the Viking's POV and I honestly agreed with Stoick; it's a memento; and it keeps the memory of the mother close.

I also noted how people point out how the Toothless of the book is a completely different dragon from the one in the movie. Well, I came up with a vague (more like a WMG) answer to that solution. Toothless, in the books, is Hiccup's dragon, but not his riding dragon. A larger dragon named Windwalker fills that role. In the movie, a Terrible Terror with Book-Toothless' colouring is fed by Hiccup, and it later goes to sleep by him. My answer? Swap the names, and continue from there. Hiccup later adopts the Terrible Terror, dubs it Windwalker, and he acts as a delivery dragon for him. Canon Equilibrium Restored.

I watched it a short while ago and was quite happy with it.
I have one question to the native English speakers. In the German version some of the vikings (the guy with one hand and one foot in particular) spoke with a strong Hamburgish dialect (which is associated with the sea over here). Did they speak with a special dialect in the English original too and what kind of dialect did they use?

Dude, Land Before Time had 12 sequels. That's way more than most franchises get.

Also, those movies you mentioned aren't even that popular anymore(I don't even know what Animals of Farthing Wood is). How to Train Your Dragon on the other hand, has met with much praise, was a Box Office success and has already sparked a successful franchise. And this was all based off an obscure childrens series. I'd have to say that's pretty impressive.

I originally thought this movie would suck, but it was much better than the trailers made it look. I also just might get it on DVD(Well I know I will, I just haven't much money right now and what I do have, I'm saving for Comic Con).

Okay, I'll admit it, at first I was like "Sure. I'm up for another, average Dreamworks movie." And then I saw it and I was like "HOLY S***!!! THIS IS THE BEST MOVIE I'VE SEEN IN MY LIFE!!!!"  :wow

The characters are incredible, the setting is magnificent, the bond between Toothless and Hiccup is beautiful, and the plot is amazing! Oh my gosh! No words could describe how awesome this movie was. It literally took my breath away!

It really got to me at the part when Toothless is sleeping and then he senses that Hiccup is in danger. (Kinda remind me of Pterano and Devon. XD) He's like "Oh s***! Must protect Hiccup!" That and the part when Toothless is drowning and Hiccup's trying to save him and he's like "No! Save yourself!" Awwwwwhhhh!!! You can really tell by his face that he wants his Hiccup to be safe.

And Toothless...by God was he amazing! He was so cute...and feisty at the same time. I like that... :lol The character design of him was just flawless! And he's just the most beautiful dragon I've ever seen. I hate to admit it, but I think he beats Saphira. (And trust me, she's pretty hard to beat!) He was much better than I thought he would be. His personality is awesome, his fighting skills kick a**, and HE'S JUST SO CUTE!!!! I wanted to hug him. XD He ain't your average dragon. Must I mention that his screech and his protectiveness towards Hiccup kick a**!

Okay, enough said.
