the iSoft program sounds interesting if it can convert straight form VOBs to other formats. does it cost?

LBT Projects / Wanna transfer my LBT stuff to computer
« on: February 20, 2009, 12:55:33 AM »
so basically what i wanna do is take my DVDs of LBT movies and TV episodes that i have, and put them in an editable format on my PC. i currently use DVD Decrypter and Handbrake to do all the decoding.

but from what i can see, these programs don't allow me to output in a format that i could take into Windows Movie Maker (i'm cheap )

reason for Movie Maker is i wanna cut clips and stuff to possibly make a few music videos.

anyone have any suggestions on some better software to use? or another way i could do it? i have scoured the web for something that is simple and fast but found nothing.

also, is there any type of format you guys recommend using? for movie maker, im assuming its gonna be WMV format, which as far as i know, takes up a huge amount of space. also, would there be a faster way to speed up the converting/decoding process? or is it more dependent on your computer's hardware?

to my knowledge, this doesn't violate any board rules, as it is for my personal use only. if it does, i apologize and would ask that an admin delete this topic as to not cause any trouble with anything.

thanks :)

1988 Theatrical Release / The Original Soundtrack for LBT
« on: January 16, 2009, 04:33:38 AM »
so recently i was listening to the original score for The Land Before Time by James Horner. i picked it up quite awhile ago for stupidly expensive, paid the equivalent of about 100 dollars for it.

after hearing it outside the movie, though, i realize just what an amazing music score it is. it was done for what is classified as a kids movie, and it can easily hold its own against some top movie scores, like Lord of the Rings etc.

anyone have any particular feelings about it? in my opinion it is one of the most amazing musical scores ever created, and just about the only thing ive heard that has topped it or come close, in an animated movie is the Lion King's score.

my respect to James Horner for bringing such a realistic score to one of the best animated movies ever; The Land Before Time.

Peace.

Computer and Electronics / Big Monitors
« on: January 16, 2009, 01:51:35 AM »

I run a 22 inch for my master machine but frequently connect it to my 32 inch tv.  Larger resolutions do require larger images.  For example, if you have an 1024768 image, that will take up the entire screen on a non wide screen 15 inch monitor, but put that onto a 22 inch and the image will be MUCH smaller.  Try to put that as a background and it'll be blurry as crap.  Higher resolutions and larger monitors are better, but if you've been living with a 15-17 inch for quite a while, it'll take some time to adjust to the higher resolution.
the image would only be smaller if the bigger monitor is set to a higher resolution. otherwise, if you had a 26" monitor set to 1024x768, the image will technically be the same size, but the screen will stretch it due to the inch difference. and as LBTL said, it will look horrible.

@ Lillefot: basically the way montiors work on a size-resolution scale, is the bigger screen size you get, the higher native resolution it is going to have.

example, a 17-19" monitor will have a native res of 1440x900, a 22-24 is typically 1680x1050, and 27+ will be 1900x1200.

regarding things like pictures, it will depend on what resolution they were taken in and what resolution your montor is running in. and the higher in res you go, the smaller things become.

for example. say you took a picture at 1440x900, and your monitor was set at that res with 1440x900 as its native. the picture on your PC will fill up the entire screen with no quality loss, as the picture is in exactly the same format as the monitor. on the flip side, if you took one at 1440x900, and your monitor was set to 1900x1200. there would be no quality loss, but the image on your PC would be much smaller, due to the picture res vs montior res. if you then lowered the monitor's res to 1440x900, the image would become blurry and distorted, because the monitor would not be running in its "native" resolution, therefore stretching the image.

"Native" resolution is a specific res set for monitors that LCDs typically only look good in. hence why different size monitors have different native resolutions. you can run a monitor in something other than its native, you will just get a stretched, distorted and bigger image.

CRT monitors do not suffer from this. they will look good in almost any resolution. the downside though is CRTs are huge and bulky, hence why they have become unpopular in favor of LCD/Plasma screens.

and regarding HDTVs. the average HDTV under 40" will run in a native res of 1366x768, unless it is a 1080p screen. this is much smaller than the majority of monitors out there. but it is a much bigger screen size running at that res, so it is quite desirable to use HDTVs as PC monitors.

sorry for the long post. felt like explaining it as best as i can xD

Computer and Electronics / Testing Windows 7 Beta
« on: January 16, 2009, 01:29:19 AM »
either way really. the beta will apparently become inactive around august, so then you would need to either reformat your HDD on a separate PC, or just delete the Windows 7 OS off a partitioned HDD or a system with 2 HDDs set up for dual boot

Computer and Electronics / Testing Windows 7 Beta
« on: January 15, 2009, 09:27:22 PM »
another hard drive for the install of Windows 7 would be fine. since it would be on a different HDD than your main OS, you should be fine as far as files and stuff.

hardware is rarely susceptible to software issues. normally hardware doesnt care one way or the other, it just asks that you have the right drivers to control it :).

im sorting out a separate computer to install 7 on right now. ive heard its awesome. only time will tell xD

Computer and Electronics / Anti-Virus choice?
« on: December 29, 2008, 04:17:39 PM »
i personally use Zone Alarm and have for over a year. i think its a great anti-virus program. id have to say though that the best one is probably Kaspersky.

it gets the best reviews over all others.

MacAfee and Norton are good in a pinch, but there are severe consequences to using them. like system slowdown, the programs doing what they want, when they want.

theres a very good reason why MacAfee is provided free with the internet companies, and why Norton comes pre-installed on EVERY retail PC today :)

Sound Off! / Seeking the aid of an audiophile.

for comparisons like this, i like to always return to the argument of a multi-product company vs a single product one.

not to say that the sony's will be rubbish, but i reckon the Sennheisers will have the superior sound quality. the lower impedance is a plus too.

i would probably get the Sennheisers, but the sony's are good too. :)

the starship Voyager-intrepid class, registry NCC 74656. was launched in the year 2371, on stardate 48308.

it was one of the first starship designs to feature a new type of engine with the liftable nacelles. the new design made traveling at warp speed very "environmentally friendly", and as a result, Voyager was able to exceed the warp 5 speed limit that was currently in effect due to the minimal damage it did to subspace.

the intrepid class also introduced the "bio-neural gel packs". something that would replace all isolinear circuitry in future starships. the purpose of the gel packs was to allow the ship to have more of a seamless communication with itself, and the crew, resulting in much more efficient, and faster operations and commands.

the intrepid class starship was primarily designed for exploration purposes. but if faced with a tactical situation, was more than capable of defending itself. being highly manoeuvrable, employing powerful phaser arrays, 5 photon torpedo bays, with a compliment of 32 torpedoes. the intrepid class was capable of going up against the majority of starships that other races could throw at it at the time.

in 2378, the USS Voyager was retrofitted with an advanced armor plating from the future designed to withstand extreme attack from the Borg. the ship could not go to warp while using the armor, but during the time the armor plating was in effect, the ship was nigh-invulnerable.

also at the same time, the ship employed a series of "transphasic torpedoes", from the future, which could cut through borg shields and destroy cubes with only a few volleys.

this technology was desgined by Captain Janeway and her crew by necessity from frequent Borg attacks on Voyager.

shortly after the launch of the USS Voyager, it was pulled into the Delta Quadrant by an alienn called the caretaker. stranded 75.000 lightyears from home.

Voyager was declared by Starfleet officially lost in 2374. however, Voyager was able to make brief contact with Starfleet and the Federation in 2375. around the end of 2378, Voyager returned home to Earth after assistance from a future Captain Janeway, and a borg transwarp hub.

shortly after returning home, the ship was placed in permanent dock at Earth and turned into a museum. while Captain Janeway was promoted to Admiral, for her courage, perseverance, and the promise she made to her crew, that she would get Voyager home, no matter what...

yes, i get bored xD

General Land Before Time / anyone got any good pictures of a Tyrannosaurus?
« on: December 18, 2008, 09:36:00 PM »
so yeah. i wanna change my sig. and im looking for a threatening picture of a sharptooth, of the tyrannosaurus variety.

i searched through the original movie, but didnt find any as good as the one i currently use. i also checked the 10th movie, but the sharpteeth in that were wussies xD.

im thinking i saw Red Claw in quite a menacing pose in a few episodes, but cant remember which ones.

if anyone has any pictures of tyrannosaur sharpteeth, id really love to see them and get another sig rolling xD. thanks :).

PS NO Chomper! hes too cute, no matter how menacing he looks :D

Computer and Electronics / WARNING to Internet Explorer Users!
« on: December 17, 2008, 01:24:04 AM »
I've been using Firefox for about 2 years now. its way better than IE in every way.

IE has always had some type of security issues.

i actually find it ironic that, firefox, which is a free browser and is made by a (i think) non-profit organization (mozilla), is far superior to a browser made by one of the biggest corporations (microsoft) in the world :D.

PS: if you are using MacAfee. i urge you to PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE get a proper anti-virus program. Zone Alarm, Trend Micro, and Kaspersky are FAR superior :)
