The Fridge / Talking and racing at the same time
« on: April 23, 2010, 11:09:00 AM »
I've just stumbled upon this gem of a video. Peter Brock (Australian Touring Car Driver, now deceased) talks the commentators through a lap of the incredibly difficult Mount Panorama circuit in Australia, in the middle of the race.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SE5fk4vXYU

You wonder how the heck he does it... keep in mind that this was in 1986, when motor racing was even more dangerous than it is today. He's driving a race car that is controlled by a straight stick-shift and clutch, none of that fancy semi-automatic stuff you see in most race cars today, and the circuit has earth and rock walls on either side. And yet he stays perfectly relaxed, even waving through the camera to his family in the pits.

Mindblowing. :o

Computer and Electronics / New Video Page Look on YouTube
« on: April 17, 2010, 08:54:53 AM »
"How satisfied are you with new version of the YouTube video page?"
-Extremely dissatisfied.

"Typically, how often do you use YouTube?"
-Multiple times per day.

"What, if anything, did you find frustrating or unappealing about the new YouTube video page? What new features or capabilities would you like to see on the video page?"
-I don't like the new "like" and "dislike" rating system. The old star system was much easier to use and view. The way the comments are arranged now is convoluted and confusing, as is viewing the related videos menu when viewing a video; the way everything was before the update made much more sense to me, and things were easier to use/identify.

"What do you like best about the new video page?"
-The new video pages are clean and slick-looking, but that's all I really like about them.

"Did you experience any problems or difficulties with the new video page in the last two weeks?"
-Yes, specifically: The "Related Videos" list does not show up occasionally.

"If you could describe the new version of the YouTube video page in one word, what would it be?"
-Disappointing.

"Did you take the guided tour of the new video page?"
-No.

General Land Before Time / What do you DISLIKE the most about TLBT?
« on: April 08, 2010, 11:52:18 AM »
The only thing I really dislike about LBT is the songs. Some of them are really good, but you don't need to put songs in a movie to get kids' attention.

I suppose the plot holes in the sequels are quite annoying, but I don't usually think about that sort of stuff when watching a movie, especially when it's LBT. I only really realised that LBT7 had a patchy plot when Malte outlined the inconsistensies.

The use of CGI in later sequels is kind of unnecessary too. I mean, when I first saw the CGI log in LBT8 I thought it was cool, but then I was only 7 or 8 years old. :p

On the subject of Sci-Fi, I didn't mind the ending of LBT7 - as many here know, I actually really enjoyed it, being a guy who has always liked to put science fiction/crossover elements in my favourite animations - but if the Sci-Fi thing became a normal part of LBT, I'd be annoyed. It would take LBT in a completely new direction, and that I wouldn't want. I believe that it's okay for a series to have one or two departures from the norm, but it needs to keep more or less to its roots - as far as I can see, LBT has done that, and what we need to remember is that LBT7 is just one movie out of thirteen.

General Land Before Time / LBT Dreams?
« on: April 06, 2010, 01:05:29 PM »
I had a really wierd LBT dream a few days ago, that I think was part of a bigger dream, but for Pete's sake I can't remember... :p

Anyway, what I do remember went like this:
Apparently Threehorn was angry at me for something that isn't quite clear... next thing I know he's chasing me around Queensland Raceway, which looked like it was from Mario Kart.

That's all I remember, and I woke up feeling just as perplexed as you, dear reader, are probably feeling right now.

General Land Before Time / What would life be without LBT?
« on: March 26, 2010, 08:01:40 AM »
I can't really say anything that hasn't already been said.

It was LBT that ignited my creative spark, eventually leading me to fan fiction writing. It was LBT with which I constructed my first real daydreams. And of course, it was LBT that got me here.

I owe it to Don Bluth and Co. for bringing me a part of my life that I'd just feel empty without. :)

Well, there's you obviously, then there's LB&T and Stitch... I'm unsure what the go is with Excalibur.

That's perfect Noname. If anything, you could make it even smaller if you want (that may or may not depend on whether you win the championship again :D)... it's no trouble.

@Petrie: Forum Racing is a game I operate in the Party Room. Noname's "award" is for winning the championship last season. :)

It's Party Time! / GOF Forum Racing - Season 2
« on: March 01, 2010, 09:42:14 PM »
Hello, and Welcome to Season 2 of Forum Racing on the Gang Of Five!

Forum Racing, at its core, is a very simple game. The basic rule is, the first person to post wins!
Here is how it works: At the beginning of a round – which is at a random time, in order to equalise the competition – I will post a message in this thread saying that the “race” has started. All competitors registered with the game must then get to this thread as soon as they notice it and post “Finish”. According to who posted “Finish” when, positions are then awarded to the participants. For example, if Person A was the first to post “Finish” after the event start was announced, Person A would be awarded the race win. Likewise, if Person B was the second to post “Finish”, he/she would be awarded second position, and so on and so forth down the field. As the championship continues on, a points table will be constructed based on the finishing positions of the participants, so that everyone can see where they stand in the overall championship. The competitor with the most points after the season's end is crowned Champion!

Speaking of points, here is a description of the points system I am going to use.
I feel that the points system I used in Season 1 (the same that F1 used last year) would have been a little unfair if the field went beyond 8 entrants, so I have constructed my own points system that allows for 20 entrants; points are awarded to everyone. If the field is below 20 participants, the system still applies – just with the empty slots not included. For these reasons, I am imposing a participant limit of 20, but for the game to be interesting and exciting, we are going to need at least 10.
This is the points system:

1st:35 points
2nd: 32 points
3rd: 29 points
4th: 26 points
5th: 23 points
6th: 20 points
7th: 18 points
8th: 16 points
9th: 14 points
10th: 12 points
11th: 10 points
12th: 9 points
13th: 8 points
14th: 7 points
15th: 6 points
16th: 5 points
17th: 4 points
18th: 3 points
19th: 2 points
20th: 1 point

As an example of how this works, Person C finished 3rd in a particular race, and Person D finished 4th. C would then receive 29 points and D would receive 26. If C finished 6th and D won in the race after that, C would get 20 points added to his tally and D would get 35 points added. C would then have 49 championship points and D would have 61 points.

If you're interested in this game, please declare your interest in this thread, then I will publish a calendar of the races once we get 10 or more entrants. Remember that this is a game of chance – races will be started at random times, so don't feel bad if you finish badly in a race. It's the same for everyone!

Thanks for reading, and if you have any questions don't be afraid to ask! :)
