General Land Before Time / Watching LBT with family
« on: February 25, 2011, 09:16:56 AM »
When I was watching the original, my dad fell asleep. But then, I don't think he's actually ever stayed awake through any film ever...
But talking to him about it afterwards, he said it wasn't really his kind of movie, but he admired the look and animation of it.
As for my mom, she discovered my guilty pleasure of owning a large collection of the series, and commented that she did remember enjoying the 2nd one.

And if all goes to plan, me and my best friend, who has said that he regards the original as one of the best films he's seen (Like me, he loves Don Bluth movies, especially TITAN AE), will sit down together on Sunday and make a Mystery Science Theatre 3000/Rifftrax-style commentary of the original film. Though it will be hard, since we both love the film alot.
But I have been practicing a few good riffs, such as

"And a glorious shot of [insert character's name]'s [crotch/butt]. Thank you, Don Bluth!"

and my personal favourite

"I just invented the [insert name of modern device that is alluded to in the film], I'M A GENIUS!!!"

General Land Before Time / Ok, just imagine you have never seen LBT. Okay?

I don't know why but I always imagined Spike to have the voice of Ed from the show Ed, Edd, n' Eddy. You know, the unibrow guy who likes chickens and always shouts "FRENCH TOAST!" Yea. That voice in Spike's body just seems natural to me.  :p
I think you mean "BUTTERED TOAST!". As well as being an LBT fan, I'm also a huge EENE fan.

General Land Before Time / Meaning of the LBT characters' names
« on: February 25, 2011, 09:04:14 AM »
Ooh! ooh! I got one!

I've heard alot of people say that Doc's name comes from "Duke", which was apparently John Wayne's nickname, as well as his species named "DiploDOCus". I'd guess it's a combination of the 2.

And yes, I think Tricia's name is just taking the TRI from TRIceratops and making it sound more like a name.

General Land Before Time / Getting to know you - LBT Style

1.) Most liked Land Before Time character - Oh geez, too many to choose! I'd say, a close tie between Guido (Just such a fun character), Bron (lovable father figure and great fighter), Pterano (Megalomaniacal, thesbian, and a great singer to boot!)and Petrie (Need I say anything? He's always been the one I remember from the series)

2.) Least liked Land Before Time character - Danah and Dinah. But they would be so easy to improve: Just make their design similar to Tricia's, and don't let them talk, because babies and toddlers do not talk like that!

3.) Most liked Land Before Time song - Bestest Friend. It just...works. It's well written, atmospheric, sweet and just plain beautiful. Squeezes a tear outta me every time.
I would say "If We Hold On Together" if not for one thing: For some reason, rather than feeling schmulzy, it kinda depresses me when I listen to it. Maybe it's because it's an ending song or something I dunno...

4.) Least liked Land Before Time song - Imaginary Friend. As soon as I saw Petrie drumming, I knew this was gonna blow.

5.) Most liked Land Before Time film - I would usually say the original, but I'll exclude it so the others have a chance. I can't pick just one, so I'd say it's all of them from 7 to 10. They just seemed well thought out, with good acting, mostly good songs, good new characters and the animation was almost back on par with the original.

6.) Least liked Land Before Time film - Of the ones I've seen, I'd have to say number 4. Not the asolute low point of the animation (That would be number 5), but pretty low, plus the new characters didn't really work. Ali was underdeveloped, Ichy and Dil were a bit too goofy (Ozzy and Strut were at least menacing), Old One was a bit of a jerk and Tickles was pointless.

7.) Most memorable Land Before Time moment - From the original: Littlefoot's Mother's Death. Watching it was the first time I cried from a movie, nay, the first time I cried AT ALL, in about 3 years. It was also the only scene I actually remembered from the first time I watched it (Though for some strange reason, I seem to remember at the time thinking the scene took place either inside a cave or underwater.... :confused )
From the sequels: The climatic battle in number 10. Dramatic, actually violent, and pretty big too.

EDIT: Now that I've seen all of them, I am in need of an update...

1988 Theatrical Release / Tell Your Story About LBT
« on: February 25, 2011, 05:38:58 AM »
Ah, I have quite a story about this:

First time I watched this series was back in Primary school...year 1 or 2, I think, so I was between 6 and 8. For some reason, our year was having a Dinosaur-themed week, when they themed every lesson around Dinosaurs. I can't remember exactly what kinds of stuff we did, but I do remember that in maths, we'd get out tape-measures and use them to see for ourselves exactly how big they were. That was kinda fun.
But the part everyone liked the most was the afternoon, when everybody would sit down in one room, they'd wheel out the Tv, and put on a VHS of The Land Before Time. Of course, back then, I wasn't exactly the film-geek I am now, I was just a kid, but there was something about the series that just hooked me in. Also, as I recall, we didn't watch them in the correct order. I think we actually watched the first one last! But I definitely remember watching the original, 2nd, 3rd and 5th ones, because I could very vividly remember scenes from those ones (Heck, I've had Big Water and Eggs stuck in my head ever since those days!)
After that, they kinda vanished from my life, till my teenage years. Being a huge fan of cartoons, I was also a fan of Don Bluth especially. Just the unique was he animates really got to me. So, I was working my way through his best films, like Secret of Nimh, American Tail, Dragon's Lair, and then I discovered to my delight that he made the original Land Before Time! So, I looked around on the net and found a Megavideo link to the first one and watched it. It was like I was 8 yrs old again.
So, after watching the original, I remembered the sequels. I knew they wer all direct-to-video affairs with no help from Bluth himself, but II had to check them out anyway.  It was hilarious how certain scenes just kept popping up that I remembered, and how I found myself singing along to quite a few songs.
So, I was pretty much hooked on the series by then, watching every Megavideo of the films there were, and buying as many of the DVDs as I could find. Luckily for me, my local HMV sells the movies for anything between £3-18, and so far, I have every one except for numbers 4, 5, 6 (Which I can get cheap as a collection), 11 (which I can watch on Youtube for free), 12 (which I can't find at HMV) and 13 (which I never intend to watch). I also found number 8 by pure luck, as a VHS in a Durham charity shop for 50p!
Just yesterday, I bought numbers 8 and 10, and I've pretty much decided that my favourite sequels are definitely 8 and 7.

The rest is (pre)history.
