If anything will tick me off it is being presented as a monster I never was!

(Seriously, I never really understood the thing the makers of Felidae had about Gregor Mendel. But perhaps there is something I don't know about this scientist?)

GRRR! Damn pea genetics! RRR! I'll teach you to pass down hereditary traits!!

Next time on Germans gone wild: Otto takes on the Magyars!

(Technically, Mendel is Austrian...close enough.)

Close enough? Tell that to a Bavarian and an Austrian I wonder what they would tell you, though I do have some idea on what it would sound like :lol
Are you interested in history Noname (Otto and Magyars reference)? But seriously, I still don't get why the monk Mendel who was experimenting with peas (rather than cats or any other animals) was depicted as such a monster in the movie Felidae.

OT: I have no idea why he would be depicted as such a monster. Did the peas cause any harm? He was part of the Catholic Church and I don't think that his work caused nearly as much controversy as Darwin's.

And wasn't Austria part of Germany (or the Holy Roman Empire, which had Germany as the main part of it) for a time? It used to be the Celtic land of Noricum, a part of the Roman Empire (Vienna used to be Vindobona, a Roman settlement) but was given to... the Bavarians by Charlemagne? (Technically, parts of modern Germany were also part of the Roman Empire, such as Cologne and Trier, though I don't think I need to tell you that...)

I had always thought that Austria was to Germany what Canada was to the United States... two countries with a common language that were both part of the same political unit at one point in time (And before anyone says anything else, both the U.S. and Canada have French-speaking areas, Quebec and Louisiana, as well.)

Edit: I just realized why what I said was odd: the U.S. and Canada are very different, in spite of sharing languages, and having both been part of the British Empire. I guess the same would apply to similar countries in Europe.

Mendel was born in 1822 while the so called Holy Roman Empire ceased to exist in 1806 leaving a large number of independent principalities. I don't think the situation of Germany and Austria can easily be compared to that of America and Canada due to a large number of factors ranging from the size and nature of the land (much more space in Canada and the USA and no frontier in Germany or Austria) to the political situation. If each US state had become a largely independent principality with the president riding from north to south to east to west all of the time trying to prevent all the dukes and counts from getting at each others' throats that might have been a bit more similar to the holy roman empire :lol
Mendel's writings didn't become well known until after his death so he wasn't nearly as well known as Darwin. There is some controversy on whether or not Darwin read Mendel's writings and vise versa. I like the idea of a monk reading Darwin's origin of species while doing some new research of his own. Anyway, I guess we are getting far of topic here. But if anyone has any idea as to why Mendel was depicted as such a monster in Felidae I would be very interested to know about it.
