Title: Vek is trying to draw...
Post by: Vek on September 26, 2010, 12:01:38 AM
I recently trying to get myself into drawing. I first started to draw Cera without any reference, and it looked like... a 1 year old child drawing. Then i tryed with reference, but with a pen it's hard to erase the mistakes.

This morning, while searching my webcam, i found an archaic wood pencil in the deep of my desk and i have retry. I still used a screenshot from the 9th movie as a reference, and i worked on it during almost 2 hours.

And i dont know why imageshack set the picture like this when i upload it, because i took the picture in the correct way !

EDIT: ha, got it !

(http://img833.imageshack.us/img833/7233/cera800x602.png) (http://img833.imageshack.us/i/cera800x602.png/)

But well, just... turn your head until i find how to fix this :/

When my fingers will do not hurt anymore ( <_< ) i will probably made other drawings, still with references until i learn every body line and proportion perfectly. If someday i can draw Cera without help, i will reach my final objective: draw my fan-character ( he's a Treehorn too, that why i choosed Cera for training).

And if drawing with references do not bother you, i will post them here.

Whoa! That's pretty good! The snout is kind of short, and her left front foot looks a little deformed, but otherwise, it's very accurate!

I'm the same way: I use references to draw, and take AGES to finish the picture.

Any particular reason you shaded her horn, toenails, underside, and other lighter-colored parts?

That's pretty good Vek! Try creating an account on Deviantart and upload it over there :D And hey, even I use references. That's really not an issue :) Tracing is a different story :p

That looks amazing Vek! keep it up, maybe someday Universal will want to hire ya. :p

dispite how simple they look, I always have trouble drawing the LBT charactors too.

I agree with the previous posters. The picture is really very well done and I'm looking forward to see more from your hand and pencil :yes
Like Pangea already asked, is there a special reason you shaded mostly the parts of Cera which are usually a bit lighter?

Perhaps hes trying to adapt his work so that when he IS ready to draw his charactor he can incorprate the dark shadded areas to the charactor.
I used to do that alot with my sketchs.

that or he did it for fun. :p

Amazing Vek! Good Job! You should create an account at DeviantArt, tons of people will fave this picture. This is pretty good for a first try at Cera, when I first tried her with a reference, it took me five years to get her right. I wish I still had it, I'd probaly add it on devianart.

Very nice artwork.  I hope you continue to draw and share them here.  Some artists here may give you tips, not being an artist myself I can't, but there are plenty here who are and can.

I did not expect so many and so fast reviews for this  :!  Thank all !

For the shade... I first wanted to set it on all his body except on the tummy, horn, toes and the spot around the eyes for give some "color" to the picture. But i was afraid to do a mistake and be forced to restart all the drawing. So i did the opposite, and it was a mistake too... Next time i'll do like my first idea.

^ It's not that it looks bad; just a little unusual (It reminds me of some of the production drawings (http://www.gangoffive.net/index.php?topic=6755) for the original LBT). We were just curious why you had decided to shade it that way.

Anyway, we're all eager to see more artwork from you. :)

Yup, i am on my second now, but i only did the head for now. I dont know why, but this one is alot more difficult to do than my first.

(http://img709.imageshack.us/img709/5527/cera2800x602.png) (http://img709.imageshack.us/i/cera2800x602.png/)

I need to re-work on the eyes, the mouth, the nose, the horn... and still the body to do.

EDIT:

(http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/9065/cera2again800x602.png) (http://img706.imageshack.us/i/cera2again800x602.png/)

Almost done, only need to re-work the back leg and re-re-work the eyes. Oh and now i look at it, the spine too.

I did and re-did the eyes billions of times but they just dont want to be well done. I gave up before becoming crazy...

Awesome job on the expression! That sure is a "Cera look" :yes
One point of constructive criticism I have may not really be valid. I think I need to check it out because I believe I have seen different version of it. It being the legs of Cera respectively any of the other quadruped characters. They are usually thin below the knee to become thicker towards the foot. What I am not certain about is whether or not they get a little thinner again right above the foot as is the case in your drawing. Again, I think I may have seen both versions, so this may not really be a valid point of constructive criticism at all.

I think what makes this pic look good is the shading.

Sorry, I had planned to post feedback earlier, but it slipped my mind. :slap

I agree with Malte that the expression on your last Cera pic looks terrific, especially the eyes and eyebrows. There seems to be something a little off about her mouth, however. It’s probably that Cera has a sort of “jagged” mouthline: it slants upwards from the tip of her beak, slants down, and then goes up again. On your picture, her mouthline slants up, and then is relatively horizontal.

Personally, I think your new Cera picture shows improvement in every respect from the first (with the possible exception that she is slightly less detailed in the wrinkles and folds in her skin). One other area that I think you should focus on is the legs and feet. In my opinion, these are often the hardest parts of a dinosaur (LBT or otherwise) to draw well, so no worries if you have a hard time getting them right. Just for a few pointers, the LBT dinosaurs’ feet are rounded, so even if the toes are all the same length, they do not protrude from the front of the foot an equal distance. Think of the foot from underneath as a circle with the toes stuck on one side, each pointing at a slightly different angle. If viewed from more of a side angle, the inner toes would protrude slightly farther forward than the outer toes.

A couple of other things: the front of Cera’s hind leg should probably be overlapping her body from this angle. She’d have to be turned much further to her right (facing the viewer more) for the sides of her body to appear to be in front. And her front left leg (the one furthest to the right), while probably having the best drawn toes, looks considerably larger than any of her other limbs.

On to the Littlefoot picture…

You made that in five minutes? AMAZING. I probably wouldn’t be able to draw the head in five minutes. Seriously, it’s very good. I can’t even find anything significant to critique about it.

:oops I didn't know see that you added more pictures, I really like Cera's expression in the second one, it fits her personality perfectly. The one of Littlefoot is really good to, have you created a DeviantArt account? Land Before Time fans there will eat these up (not litterally). :lol

EDIT: The one of Littlefoot was done in 5 minutes? It took me like five hours to draw that scene once, and it wasn't as good as that one, good job Vek!

have you created a DeviantArt account?

I tried this morning, but it say my nickname is already used <_<

I looked the guy profile; 6 years old profile and no picture posted or comment given, i hate those idle nickname stealer :anger . It's happened on Battlefield 2 five years ago too, all the name i wanted to take were already took... after some hours, i just typed something like lkdmvcbnkvkmjnuh and its finaly worked, and i played with this weird name for years.

I don't know yet if i will just add number after my name or take completely different name.

I will think about it and inform you guys when it will be created.

You can always try something else for deviantart (I had to do the same)

You can use a number, a different name, or try your wanted nickname backwards or an added letter.

Ok, so i looked "Vek" on google and i got like 7 millions of results...

I tried "Kaelvek" ( don't ask wtf it's mean, i just dreamed about that last night :lol. I often got  briliant idea while sleeping ) and i get 0 result, so i choosed it  :smile

Deviantart is not as simple than this forum for upload a picture ( when i saw the category choices i was like :wow) . But i finaly uploaded my first drawing of Cera. The 2 others will follow in some minutes.

With some webcam problem, i cant take picture of my drawing anymore, and dont have money for buy a new one. So i decided to try draw with Gimp:

(http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/8629/sanstitrepuu.jpg) (http://img214.imageshack.us/i/sanstitrepuu.jpg/)

The hardest part was to draw with my right hand. I hold pencils with my left hand, but i hold my mouse with the right hand. I did not put effort in that first one, i just wanted to test some Gimp fonction.

For my second try, i wanted to try to do my dinosona ( well i did not have the choice, Cera dont want me to draw her anymore  <_<  ). I did it seriously and i am so happy with the result that i took it for my avatar, even if it's the alpha version:

(http://img841.imageshack.us/img841/3323/vekg.jpg) (http://img841.imageshack.us/i/vekg.jpg/)

Twice happy in fact, because i did not used any reference !

funny first picture, I like the 2nd, and you can swap the mouse buttons to use it with your left hand.  I did that since I have some weird problem with my right forearm now that may never heal.  It's usually ok for day to day use, but I use the mouse left handed due to part of the reason.

Good to know that if i put some humor on a ugly picture, it will be apreciated anyway.

So you're left handed?

I am not sure if you talk to me or to Kor. If it's to me; I think i am ambidextrous. For writing and draw with a pencil, i use my left hand. For use the mouse or scissors i use my right one. I tried to switch my mouse for left handed and it's too weird... I'll keep draw on my computer with my right hand, i'll get used.

After many drawings of Cera and one baby Littlefoot, i wanted to try another character:

(http://img571.imageshack.us/img571/6497/becky.jpg) (http://img571.imageshack.us/i/becky.jpg/)

Like the first picture of Cera, it's more for practicing the options of Gimp than seriously draw. I tested the shadow and light effect on Ducky and the trees behind. Some rocks for adding detail and i put more effort on the grass and the trees than in the first picture. Water stay a problem, i dont know how to do it in a realist way... yet. But i will find out someday, Three-horn can do anything !

For Ducky herself, i know the head is too small and flat and the hand is strangely done. The only thing that i am happy is with the colors.

Yeah I was talking to you Vek. I was going to suggest moving the mouse so you can use your left hand, but now I don't think that'll help. Perhaps you could someday get a tablet?

Just keep trying, don't look just at the mistakes, look also at what you think you did well and what you improved on also.  Nice picture of Ducky by the way.

The first picture made me laugh. :lol And it's pretty good, too, considering the constraints you had. I don't think I could draw something that good with my left hand, mouse or pencil! (Cera's spinal ridge looks fantastic!)

And the second picture is very well done! :wow And drawn without a reference, too! Wow! I can see some spots by your character's eyebrow, horn, and ear that aren't colored in, and the whites of the character’s eyes are missing, but it’s a pretty darn good threehorn. :yes

As for the third picture, well…I think Ducky said it best! :smile She actually looks really good! :wow Again, I see a few tiny white spaces that could be colored in, but I’m seriously so impressed with how well you drew Ducky’s face that this may very well be my favorite of your three latest art pieces. :yes
