Title: Added smilies.
Post by: Manny Cav on October 31, 2007, 10:14:10 PM
I noticed that three of the added smilies have these white spots and look not as good as the others when placed against a colored background. I did fix them up, but there's a problem.

They may not look animated, but there are definitely multiple pictures packed into those files if downloaded. But, anyway, when I tried to make them transparent and animated at http://www.gifworks.com/ (http://www.gifworks.com/), they didn't animate quite the same as the original ones here.
:yes
:bang
:cry2
Can someone here make them transparent and fix them up where they animated at them same speed as the other versions used on this board so that they can make suitable replacements?

That's not a big deal.  I think someone already tried to fix those as well and they couldn't get the white to go away.  Tim might know who it was.

The white's gone and I can bring them to transparent animation with http://www.gifworks.com/ (http://www.gifworks.com/), but I would like someone who could animate them like the originals.

I tried to fix them up, and I DID fix them, but three magically disappeared, I can send them to ya, but you're never on msn :p

I know I did all of them because "harhar" was the most irritating (time consuming) or maybe doh was... bah, it was a bit ago

I also made these

I don't. :DD Actually, can you animate my versions the same way you did those? I think that that would be the best thing right now.

fireworks or imageready can do it if you have either of those programs manny.

Also, on those smilies you posted that were the originals, I don't see any white background.  Are you using IE 6?  It doesn't have the support for the second generation gifs and png's.

Post by: Manny Cav on October 31, 2007, 11:54:39 PM
The originals don't have white backgrounds, just rough white edges on the outside that make them not look too good on a normal background.

I don't have either of those programs, but I posted some fixed GIFs that just need to be made transparent and animated like the original ones. They're already animated, but they don't loop. I'm sure someone here could fix that, though, possibly you.

The white edges of the originals are clearly visible on the screenshot you posted.

Well, yeah, but I wanted to share those smilies on another site, but not before "preparing them" properly. If someone could do the rest, or show me how to do it, that would be great.

Yeah, but I want them to match up with the rest, and those don't exactly look right....

they look fine to be, but I'll redo them if you want.

If you can do it, then just download my first set of edits, make them transparent and animate them to match up with the rest. If you can't, then I'll download a program or learn how to do it myself and see what I can get cooking. Sometimes, I like a little image editing....

Holy crap!  Individual pixel selection!  That was a pain in the you know what.  Here's my end result.  I don't wanna do any more though unless you like it:

You can't animate a non animated image BTW.  Not without a lot of effort.  A LOT.  I just used the originals.  Hope ya like them! :D

Huh... what did you use to make that? My edits?

Post by: landbeforetimelover on November 01, 2007, 12:26:31 AM
well, I am pretty good with gif animations myself, but I don't have my copy of fireworks CS3 handy right now and I had to use a cheap crap program (easy gif animator (which is anything but easy)) <_<

My first images with the green backgrounds are technically animated. However, they don't loop, and there appear to be speed issues and pausing with the original ones. And, of course, they aren't transparent. Anyone who has a program that can check the speed and pause numbers for the original images can do so with my images and make them transparent, as well.

Your images are not animated at all.  They have one frame in them.  You can't make multiple frames from one frame!  Just because it's a gif doesn't mean it's animated.  It just is the standard animation format because it only supports up to 216 colors and is easier on the computer.  This is a gif image, but it's not animated, just like your smilies:

If you open my images in any standard GIF program (besides MS Paint or Photoshop), you'll find that they are animated and have multiple frames, but they just don't loop. Put the image URLs into your broswer and constantly refresh the web pages after they finish to see what I mean.

Post by: landbeforetimelover on November 01, 2007, 01:53:48 AM
when I open it in image ready (a very expensive program mind you), it only shows one frame.  I can't open the image in any other program either.  It says it's not a valid or supported format.  Strange.

Well no matter, tails did what you asked for Manny.  They match fine on my screen.

Sorry, I think I've been confusing y'all with my yabberin'. I'll try to explain. With all of the attempts I've seen to clean up the originals, including Tails_155's attempt, the white pixels were removed. Doing it like that still leaves some rough edges that can't be removed, but what I did was create a completely blank smiley face from the  <_<  :)  -_- smilies and put the stuff from the originals onto my blank faces, which results in zero white edges. And, about my GIFs not working, I just uploaded the original BMP files, organized and numbered in order of their frame appearances.

Mabey those will work, landbeforetimelover.

I don't get what is wrong with tails' contribution.  Unless you're using tv resolution on your computer, there's nothing visibly wrong.

The edges still look a little rough, probably from manually removing the pixels or by running the frames through a program of some sort to automatically remove them.

Right now, I'm trying to string something together so I can animate my versions to the exact specifications of the current versions. I'll let y'all know when I'm done.

I'm assume you're addressing me and that you made those yourself. I actually think they look real spiffy. The also remind me of treestars (this was probably done deliberately by you, though  ). I don't know what they'd get used for on this site, but they still look good.

I have all the necessary ones, they are Treestars, I made them, and I took the idea from the background, the ones with water are "new" posts

Right now all images are fine the way they are.  We'll keep the treestars in mind if there's ever a need for something like that (who knows).

I reuploaded them with higher quality, but you may need to refresh your browser windows to get the new pictures.

Now, I've came across a problem. I downloaded the Adobe Fireworks trial to make these. These smilies look absolutely great on Firefox (or, really, any image editing program I've loaded them into), but the nodding yes and crying smilies have an issue on Internet Explorer where the entire far-right column of pixels appear transparent. This doesn't show up on Firefox or any other image editing programs I load them into. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong, if anything?

They load fine in Opera.

@ tails:  If you used the fireworks trial, you made second generation png's/gif's.  These are not supported by browsers IE6 (which a lot of people still have, including me.) and before.  It will work in most firefox and other browsers, but IE6's lack of support for the second generation images is a real concern for web designers like me.  I have to do almost all my work in photoshop CS2 instead of CS3 in order to make my website images compatible with IE6.  Images made in any programs newer than the year 2003 save in a second generation of the image, making it incompatible with IE6.  The only image formats that are made in newer programs that are still compatible with the old IE6 are JPEG, BMP, and TIFF(who uses that anymore? :lol )

Erm... landbeforetimelover, I think you meant to address me. Anyway, the deal where the entire far-right column of pixels dissapear actually happens on IE 7, as well, but not on Firefox 2 or on any image editing program I load them into.

Hmmm... regardless, what's the difference between the old generation GIFs and PNGs from the new ones? Will I have to use a program that makes the old ones if I want them to display on Internet Explorer 6 or 7?
