Possible problem with my new router

Well not really mine. Clint bought it yesterday and hooked it up. He, today, hooked the Wii to it. Now this computer, his latpop, and the Wii are all hooked up to this router. After that, I noticed a change. The internet is going slower than it did before, taking longer to load up pages. Where I'd only have to wait a second or two, I now find myself waiting for 20-30 seconds at least. And I'm being constantly signed off of MSN, and find it hard to send messages to people.

Does anyone know if the router could be causing the problem? What can I do to fix it?

Finally! I wasn't able to get back on last night for some weird reason. At first, Clint and I were convinced it was just a problem on their own, provided that internet worked just fine yesterday, and that the problem still persisted even though the Wii and the two other computers hooked to the router were turned off.

But this morning, Clint unhooked the router, and the internet started to work again. It's plugged back in though.

Anyway, I think it's a wireless but I'm not sure. Maybe I should consider it wired since it does have a wire coming out of the backside of it.

Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but did you renew your IP and repair the connnection already?

I don't even know how to change the IP address, and I don't think I should attempt that.

I did not repair the connection. All Clint did was unplug the router, and the internet worked. Now the router's back in. I'm thinking it is the router, but if it was, then why would it take almost 24 hours for the connection to go bad?

There was probably an IP conflict along the way that caused it to go bad.  Repairing the connection should solve it.

Tried resetting my IP address. Problems still persist. Internet gets slow at times, and MSN keeps signing me off.

Have you checked the ethernet cables?  Also, sometimes unplugging the router and plugging it back in will help.

I've got 2 Ethernet wires, and 2 Internet wires, 3 hooking into the computer and 1 into the modem.

Wait wait wait.  If you have high speed internet, there should only be one ethernet cable going into your computer from the router and another cable in the router going to the cable or high speed internet box and of course, a power cable going into the router as well.  You should only have one cable connected to the computer itself, unless you have some regular phone cords plugged in, which would explain why you're having difficulty.  Make sure that the ethernet connection is the default connection in the network control panel and/or take the phone cords out of the computer.  You can't use dialup and high speed at once!  You have to choose one or the other.

We use Cable, not Dialup. Currently, we have Motorola Cable Modem hooked up, then Dad bought Vonage and hooked it up. Vonage was installed to, according to dad, make the internet and phonecalls cheaper or something. But to get it to work, he had to upgrade the Cable. Then Clint bought the Router a few days ago. All 3 are plugged it and on as I speak.

First day with it hooked up was fine. But only a few hours after hooking the Wii to it, that's when the problems started occuring.

I did not hook up any of this stuff. I wouldn't know how to properly hook it up either.

A typical Vonage network should be wired something like this, if I understand correctly.



Unless you have a good reason to intentionally wire your network otherwise, I'd say this is an accurate guideline to follow.

Oh.  I thought you just upgraded to cable and forgot to disconnect the dialup service and the thing was having conflicts deciding what connection to use.  It never occured to me that you'd have some sorta money saving phone hookup screwing around.


#1 rule for someone who doesn't wanna pay a fortune for internet is Comcast.  $59 a month for 8mbps internet speed.  All ya gotta do is have a router connected to the service modem and an ethernet cable coming out of the router and into the main computer/computers.  Very simple hookup.  I try to stick away from services that have phone, cable, and internet all connected together.  Just too much to go wrong in my opinion. <_<

I honestly know nothing about phone interaction with an internet modem except that it usually screws up.  I've personally never had a home phone before.  Cell's are the way to go for me.

My parents control the finances, not me.

I think the connection is stable now. Clint recently installed the Nintendo Wii's Wi-Fi USB, and I think it stabilized the connection. We've had very little, if any, disconnections. In fact I haven't had a problem yesterday or today. So I'm hoping the problem is gone for good.
