Title: What different purchases have you made recently?
Post by: Amaranthine on June 14, 2008, 11:45:45 PM
This had to do with people getting Petrie's music thread mixed up by saying they bought a random product, but they didn't realize it was music he was talking about.

So, what did you buy recently?

I'm pathetic :p I bought a Vitamin Water and some cookies from Starbucks XD

1GB of 466mhz laptop ram from crucial.com.  It was only $81.99 with shipping, considerably cheap seeing as it was just DDR.  :p It's not for me though.  I bought it to upgrade a client's laptop.  I'll make a decent profit off of that chip.

I ordered all 13 LBT movie DVD's, and all four of the TV episode DVD's...cost me $400 CAD(including shipping), but I think it was worth it.

Sounds like you have a lot of LBT you need to watch.  Guess we know what you'll be doing with your free time for a while.   Have a lot of fun.  My purchases I'll be making tomorrow and a week from tomorrow will likely bore folks here, and they are online and likely to not count.

Holy smokes!  That sounds rather expensive, at least in my opinion.  The only thing I've been stocking up on consistently is Propel fitness water fortified with vitamins and calcium.  It's good stuff, actually :yes.  Oh, and gas 'cuz I commute.
Title: What different purchases have you made recently?
Post by: landbeforetimelover on September 02, 2008, 10:59:34 PM
Expensive is a relative term so in my world, those are just regular purchases.  I make a lot of money doing computer repair so spending a few hundred dollars isn't such a big deal to me as it is to most other people my age.  I didn't get my aunt a new laptop.  It was only $400 and for a 1.25ghz ibook G4 with 1.5gb of ram and a 60gb hard drive, that's a really good price.  The air conditioner was just the cheap $119 one from walmart, the laptop battery was only $65, and the xbox game was one of those bargain ones for $20.  I didn't spend that much considering what good deals I got.

In a package deal, I got all this for only $635 from another repair tech:

Item: Computer
Specs:
1.6ghz P4 Processor
1gb ram
40gb hard disk
Windows XP

Item:  Computer
Specs:
1.5ghz P4 Processor
.5gb ram
40gb hard disk
Windows XP

Item:  Computer
Specs:
2.66ghz P4 Processor W/Hyperthreading (similar to dual core)
1gb ram
40gb hard disk
Windows XP

Item:  Computer
Specs:
3.2ghz P4 Processor W/Hyperthreading (similar to dual core)
1gb ram (can be upgraded to 8gb at crucial.com for around $179.  3gb for $40)
80gb hard drive (has 6 SATA2 ports and 1 place for an ATA drive)
Windows XP

Item:  Monitor
Link:  http://www.misco.ie/productinformation/~12...0WITH%20DVI.htm (http://www.misco.ie/productinformation/~125170~WW~all~/HANNSG%20HW191D%2019%20%20WIDESCREEN%20TFT%20WITH%20DVI.htm)

Item:  Speakers
Description:  Sony VAIO nice speakers.  Not some cheap piece of crap.  I have no idea what the value of them is, but they sound really good.

Item:  Hard Drives
Description:  1 20gb, 2 30gb's, 1 40gb, 1 250gb, and I think there was a 60gb thrown in as well.

Item:  Graphics Cards
Description:  All 128mb.  Haven't tested yet.  Pretty good for standard stuff.  Got 3 of them/

Item:  Keyboards
Description:  Two DELL keyboards.  one was brand new and one was a few years old.

Item:  Ram
Description:  Mostly really old SIMMs ranging from 32mb to 128mb.  There was one 256mb old SIMM.  In addition to the practically useless SIMMs, there was 2 512mb DDR chips and 2 256mb DDR chips.  I have a couple computers that have 4 slots and that's 1.5gb.  Plenty for most people so long as they're not running Vista.

Item:  Mouse
Description:  Just a simple wireless mouse.  Really dirty.

This was quite a deal for only $635.  Heck, the 3.2ghz one is worth a pretty penny if I put the 250gb in there and upgrade the ram to 3gb.  I'll probably go get a couple 500gb SATA drives for it.  They're only $69 each.

I have read about that game it sounds like the kind I would play but since my computer is nowhere near fast enough and I don't have a 360 or PS3 I'm just gonna save up my money til I have enough. I'll more likely get a 360 so I can play AC6.

I got 2 really nice HP photo printers with preview screens.  No disks, but I can always download the drivers online. :D

-Hard Drives

Here's a list of the HDs I got:

250gb, 160gb, 120gb, 120gb, 80gb, 80gb, 80gb, 80gb, 40gb, 40gb

-Software

I got a HUGE box of software.  The oldest one I could find was from 2003 so they're all fairly new.  If I had to guess, I'd say there was 2,000 disks in that box.

-Accessories

I got 4 USB hubs, 2 keyboards, 2 mice, 5 surge protectors, a lamp (don't ask me why that was in the box), and a lot of CD holders.

-Blank Disks

I've done some math and these aren't exact numbers but they're pretty close.  I got 450 DVD-RW Disks, 1,500 Writable CDs, 200 Writable DVDs, and 100 CD-RW Disks.

-Misc Stuff

Wow.  Where do I start?  There was TONS of crap in there that wasn't computer related.  There was 20 fingernail clippers (all factory sealed in their packages thank god!), a weird gnome figure, a golf ball, a shoe, a microwave, a tennis racket, a remote control that went to some TV, and..........just tons of crap that I didn't need.  :DD

This was such a GREAT DEAL!  I must say it's rather odd though.  I get these sort of deals a lot when repair techs in my area die (we all die at a young age).  It was sorta weird taking a dead guys stuff that I didn't even know, but after doing it several dozen times that weird feeling goes away.  And for those of you wondering if I ripped the guy off, no I didn't.  He was hauling it into the dumpster if I didn't take it and all the stuff looked like such junk I just offered him $40 for it and he took it.  Seriously, the computers looked like they were 10 years old and the stuff was just piled high, but I thought I might be able to get some decent stuff if I got a bunch of it.  There's still a bunch of stuff I have to give to the thrift store (such as those fingernail clippers), but after all that, I'll be a pretty happy camper! :D

Wow. That's a lot of books. I'll bet those cost a lot to ship. :lol  Who took the picture?
You bet, the shipping was higher than the cost of the books sort of making up for the low price I had to pay for the books themselves :( It was still worth it though ;)
I took the picture myself using an autotimer.

I really need to work harder at saving money...

Graphic Novels (and for those who haven't heard of them, they really aren't all inappropriate as the name may suggest to some of you):
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya 1
Gon 5
Dragon Drive 10 and 11
COWA!
NORA: The Last Chronicle of Devildom 1
Shaman King 19
St. Dragon Girl 1
.Hack//G.U. + 3
Chibi Vampire 11
.Hack//xxxx 2
Sand Land
Descendants of Darkness 1
Code Geass 1
Sokora Refugees 1
KAMUI 1
Nephylym 1
Legend 1
You can see that I am a big graphic novel collector and judging from all the volume 1's, you can probably also notice that I start new series quite frequently.

Video Games:
Chrono Trigger- DS
Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe Kollector's Edtion- XBOX 360
Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm Limited Edition- PS3

Other:
The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon Player's Guide, which covers all of the versions except for the DS one. I can put a stop right now to what it is some of you are thinking. I did NOT cheat in any way during the five times I've beaten this game. I used no references for the entire time. I just got the players guide afterwards to learn some secrets about it, that's all.
The Land Before Time: Friends Forever DVD

These are my recent purchases. I never was very good with money. Later.

Let me think...

Ah, in the past month, I've bought:

*20 wireless logitech mouse & keyboard sets (They were on sale for $14.99 ea.  I couldn't resist.  They were originally $39.99 ea.)

*5 2gb flash drives (also on sale for $5 ea.)

*Spyro "A Hero's Tail" game for PS2.  Couldn't resist.

*New DVD-RW DL burner for laptop (which I'm not to happy to have had to replace only a year after I bought the thing brand new)

*Another Wireless N router.  This makes 5 different routers in total I have hooked up.

*2gb (2x1gb) DDR2 667mhz ram for Aunt's laptop

*New 200gb hard drive for Aunt's laptop

*Bose on-ear headphones (a second pair)

*15.4" flat panel wide-screen monitor (will replace my old monitor used for repairing computers that wasn't wide-screen)

*Computer:  1.8ghz P4 processor, 20gb hard drive, 128mb DDR 333mhz ram.  Upgraded to 2.6ghz HT P4 processor, 120gb hard drive, 1gb DDR 333mhz ram.  Bought for $40.  Put in $20 in parts.  Sold for $200.

*20 cans of air (for blowing out computers & other electronic devices)

*Wireless presenter with built-in laser pointer (handy for giving presentations.  Will use it in my presentation of Japanese history and myths.)

*750gb external hard drive (WD Elements brand.  Very good deal @ only $88.)

*50ft Ethernet cable (just another cable to drive my mom nuts :p )

*Picture Frame (to frame another LBT picture)

*New Laptop bag (much better and more efficient than my old one)

You buy quite a lot.

I try to only buy the necessities.  With me though, things that would be considered luxury items to most people are actually things I need.  The only things on that list I could have lived without are:  The picture frame ($5), The flat-panel wide-screen monitor (I just couldn't stand my standard flat panel because it wasn't wide-screen so I had to upgrade.  It was only $50.  Quite a steal considering they retail for $129.), and the Spyro game (I totally deserved this because I only buy a new video game maybe once a year.  I'm not the gaming type, but when I want a game, I just buy it because of how infrequently I get games.).

My aunt really needed parts for her laptop.  It only had 256mb of ram so I got her 2gb.  Her 40gb hard drive was pretty crappy too and she needed more storage so I got her a 200gb.  The wireless mouse and keyboard sets were a necessity because a large portion of my keyboards are gone (stolen by god knows who when I was loading them into the apartment.  They stole a box with 13 keyboards and 9 mice in it.) :anger

Canned air is a must for my computer business and when they go on sale, I buy a crapload of them.  They were absolutely huge and were only $2.99 each so I had to get them.  Normally, a can half the size would have been $7.

A new DVD burner for my laptop was also a must because....well....you need to have a optical drive in a laptop....  Sorry but there's no argument for that.

I got the second pair of Bose headphones because they're coming out with a new model which I don't like so I had to get another of the old model before they were gone forever.  Besides, they were on sale for only $161.00.

The wireless presenter was a must because I have a presentation to do and I'll be nervous enough without having to worry about crap like switching screens using the keyboard and such.

The new laptop bag was needed because my old one totally broke and I hated it anyways.

I needed the 750gb hard drive because I wanted to add it to my client server.  The 500gb I had attached burned out the other day.

The Ethernet cable wasn't exactly needed but....hey it was $1.  $1!!!  I couldn't resist.  Usually 6ft of Ethernet cable goes for as high as $10 so 50ft for $1.  Only an idiot would pass that deal up.

Well I just got a smoking deal on a almost brand new computer.  It still sells for $688 on walmart.com.  I can't find the exact model (I deleted it from my favorites), but it's this exact one except it's got a 500gb hard drive instead of 2 320gb ones and mine is $688 for some reason:

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=8195031 (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=8195031)

It has the following specs:

*AMD Athlon64 X2 5200+ 2.6ghz processor
*3gb DDR2 800mhz ram (expandable to 8gb)
*500gb SATA2 hard drive
*Vista Home Premium
*Lightscribe DVD Burner
*15 in 1 multimedia card reader
*Front media ports (includes second sound card, 2 extra USB ports, and an Ethernet port)
*256mb integrated graphics (I don't need any more, but I'm considering getting a 512mb G-force graphics card)

I got this computer for only $250!  Talk about awesome!  The dude bought the thing even though he couldn't afford it and was forced to sell it to pay rent.  This'll serve as my new master machine for now.  I'll sell my better one.  I certainly don't need any more than this and with the way the economy is now, I want to get what it's worth out of my other machine. :p

Recently got some Compaq Evo computers.  They're decent, but I bought them solely for resale.  I might keep one of them though just because I like 'em.  They have the following specs:

*1.7-1.8ghz P4 Processors (Not Hyperthreaded)
*512mb-1gb ram (2gb max)
*20gb-80gb hard drives
*Windows XP Pro SP3
*CD-ROM to DVD/CD-RW Drives

They vary in specs because I got them from a school, but at only $50 each, they were a steal.  Here's a picture of one of them:

I think I'll put 'em up for sale for $99 each and double my money.  Sounds like a plan to me. :D

I just bought a rather cool looking computer (Might post some pics later).  It has the following specs:

*2.4ghz P4 Processor (MB supports Hyperthreading)
*2gb DDR 400mhz RAM
*1 200gb ATA hard drive, 1 500gb SATA2 hard drive
*Windows XP Pro SP3
*DVD and CD Burner Combo Drive

I only paid $200 for it.  I'm gonna replace the two hard drives with a 120gb and put in only 1gb of ram and sell it for the same price on craigslist.  That way I'll get 4 sticks of 512mb ram, a 200gb ATA hard drive, and a 500gb SATA2 hard drive for FREE! :D

As far as I can tell it's a pretty well kept up 1988-89 Sheridan P68

As for me I just got 2 laptops for basically free in a trade-in.  They have the following specs:

*2.4ghz P4 Processor
*768mb ram
*30gb hard drive
*Windows XP Pro SP3

*2.0ghz Pentium M Processor
*512mb ram
*40gb hard disk

Well, perhaps this is really getting kind of an obsession for me. But I really got a very kind offer (seller will pay part of the shipping costs and the price for the books themselves is very generous as well) for a 26 book series on the Old West. I bought these books from the UK. Bless the European Union, this time I did not even have to pick up the book (against a ransom of tolls) at the supposedly local customs office but got that right home without any need to pick them up or pay additionally, not to mention the considerably lower shipping costs to get stuff across the channel rather than the big pond.

Malte, I have to ask.  Why are books so important to you?  Certainly the images and information can be found online.  What's the significance of having these things in print?  I've never really understood this concept in anything....even family photos.  So long as you've got a decent sized monitor you shouldn't have to print stuff out.  What is it with humans and tangible items?  Why doesn't having the data and thing to look at suffice?  I'm one of those people who wish things never had to be printed (such as school assignments and photos).

And I'm not looking for a "Because it's good to have something to hold" answer.  I already know that.  I'm wondering what the significance of having "something to hold" is to you and other people.

Certainly the images and information can be found online.
Depends what you're after.  I know there is a lot of information in books on music, orchestration, composition, etc. that people just don't share online.  The advice on many forums whenever you ask is simple:
"Go get <this book>!  It's awesome for explaining this!"

Some information, specifically some of the most detailed, valuable information, just doesn't appear online, in my experience.  Perhaps that has something to do with it.

^^^Hmmmmm....I'm not the biggest history fanatic, but whenever I need detailed information on a topic relating to history, I can almost always find it online.  Perhaps I just know how to google better. :p My family says I've got a knack for it, but I really don't think what I do is that hard.  It's just so obvious how to search for things.  Of course, I know how google works. :nyah

There are many reasons, the one "to hold something" is but one. I really love to read and while I also love flipping through wikipedia articles I prefer reading from paper by far over reading of a screen in case of very long texts. Also much of the information to be found in the internet must not be quoted in scientific discourse (e.g. the papers I got to write for the university) while these books (though these particular specimen provide basic knowledge rather new theories) are perfectly suitable for that purpose. Many of the pictures from the book have so far not even been published online (yes, that IS possible even in our time ;)).
While I am definitely going to read those books (unlike those people who buy tons and tons of books just to have them on their boards but with no intention to ever read them (some will even go so far to buy fake book spines to put on their boards in order to pretend being erudite to any visitors; which may turn out highly embarrassing if anyone ones to check out one of those "books")) I admit it is something about collecting as well it looks great to have a whole series of these books complete.
It is not like I was going after every book I could get my hands on. Not even after every book on one of "my" topics, but I knew these to be very well made and written (knowing a couple from the series from libraries which never provide all of them though).
Some say that the day will come when electronic reading will oust books, and while the book selling rates so far do not support this view, I'm afraid there is some substance to it (Time life for example has by now stopped creating such books as ever less people are willing to pay for them), but I do not hope to see the day when it is just screen reading only. I reckon it may be as difficult for you to understand as for me the collecting of computers would be, somewhat understandable but not quite sensible. That sensibility in our actions (or lack of the same), I reckon, is strongly determined by the perception of the individual :lol

Very insightful Malte!  As expected from you.  I've never understood it before, but now I think I do in some way.  Though the #1 reason I believe in having solely non-printed material is the waste of the earths resources producing all that paper makes.  The second is just the convenience of having it all "right there".  I'll never be into books myself, but online reading is what I like to do quite frequently.  I guess it's different for everybody.

In the past month or so, I've spent about $300 on linkbuilding campaigns.  It would have been half that if I hadn't made a stupid mistake.  Ah well.  You live and learn I guess. :p  I plan to spend at least a few hundred more just on the one site I'm promoting.  The results have been sooooo good!  :D I'm thinking of opening up yet another website, this time with the intention of making a decent amount of regular, dependable income from it.

Two power supplies from TigerDirect.  They were pieces of crap 250w PSU's, but the price is right ($11 apiece).  With shipping and everything, both supplies were less than $30.  I got these PSU's to put into basic computers.  For example, if a client brings in a basic HP computer that's 5 years old or whatever, 250w is fine.  Not to mention the fact that they don't want to spend a fortune on something like a PSU for an older machine like that.

^ My car insurance for six months is less than that Dreamweaver thing.

Tell me about it.  I'm a professional web designer/developer and I still don't have Dreamweaver.  Notepad works fine for me and I can think of a LOT more things I'd rather spend $400 on.  Besides...Dreamweaver makes you lazy and makes you forget a lot of things.  I used it for almost half a year and it almost destroyed my ability to whip stuff up from scratch in Notepad.  I don't even bother with Notepad++ even though the different colors do make it a lot easier when working on more complex projects.  I don't want to have to rely on any third party programs to get my work done.  For example, I whipped this site up in less than an hour using strictly Notepad:

http://www.heightsupholstery.com (http://www.heightsupholstery.com)

Sure it's not the greatest, but if I had actually cared and spent time on it, I could have made it a LOT better.  But it was just a $99 slam and bam website for a client so I really didn't give a crap.

I just got 4 identical Mac G5 computers for only $600!  That's just $150 a pop! :D Here are some specs:

*1.6ghz PPC G5 Processor
*512mb DDR 400mhz Ram
*80gb SATA Hard Drive
*Mac OS 10.3

I've upgraded one of them to 3gb of ram and a 500gb SATA drive and I'm thinking of keeping it for myself.  It's a pretty quick machine. :yes The others I'll definitely upgrade to at least 1gb of ram and sell them off for about $300-$400 apiece (depending on how much people will be willing to pay for them).  I've actually never worked on a Mac Pro before so this was a totally new experience for me.  And I must say, they suck when it comes to working on them.  I cussed like 25 times while installing the 3gb of ram, 500gb hard disk, and Mac OS 10.5.8.  You'd think a machine this big would be nice and easy to work on, but no.  Epic fail Mac.  Though now that I think of it, I've never worked on a Mac and found it to be a pleasant experience.  Whatever.  I just hope the "logic board" (talk about a dumb name for it) or something else major doesn't go out.  Here is a picture of the Mac's in action:

It was Red Faction: Gurrilia(sp?) for the PS3.  Got that with a $2 game guarantee, so if the disc gets damaged, they can replace it, free of charge ^^

Okay, here's a game I've purchased for my March Let's Play Project.

(http://www2.mediafire.com/imgbnc.php/8fae16a268d8245a6adf90f3cbd8f57c322fd4cbb5d58314142697c47cc137013g.jpg) (http://www.mediafire.com/imageview.php?quickkey=qv4uvsaw13l6tb3&thumb=4)

The interesting thing here is that I'll be doing one of the toughest challenges within the game.  It's not something that is required, but is a good challenge.

The ONLY reason I purchased it is because my mom gave away my original copy. -_-

PokÈmon Black and a used DS.

---------------------------

I did consider buying a BlackHawk Special Operations Entry Ram (http://www.amazon.com/BlackHawk-Special-Operations-Entry-Ram/dp/B001LZ97CA/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1304484928&sr=8-10) as a joke to see if Amazon.com would actually accept and ship the order.

I assumed that they would not because of what it says on the BlackHawk site:

Quote
SPECIAL NOTE: This BLACKHAWK! product is restricted to Military, Law Enforcement and Security Personnel ONLY.

But if I am wrong, then I just wasted $329.31 on something I have little use for.

On the other hand, I have seriously considered buying a Blackhawk ballistic helmet (http://www.amazon.com/Ballistic-Level-Helmet-Black-Small/dp/B000VUE898/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1304485661&sr=8-6) (another "restricted" item).

Granted, I do have a use for it. NERF dart gun fights.

Seriously. Several people show up in hunter's gear; two or three people show up in military surplus equipment; I saw someone wearing a riot trooper helmet and of course, who could forget the guy who wore the US's Improved Outer Tactical Vest armor <Yes, it was real> or the guy who wore a Navy Working Uniform. But those last two were military personnel.

---------------------------

By the way, all this stuff is perfectly legal.

Probably the last big purchase I made was a Pleo, a robotic baby sauropod.

He was the most expensive thing I ever bought, at $199 plus customs charge for importing him from Hong Kong.

He's curious, adventurous, loyal, affectionate, but kida seepy sometimes.
Suitably enough, I named him Littlefoot. if he had the same colour scheme, it would be perfect, but Pleos are green. Though if I get him to work again (His batteries have malfunctioned), and after a few year, I may give him a custom paint job.

I just took a trip to Microcenter and got some parts including:

1)  ASUS motherboard that can support a 6-core AMD processor and 16gb of DDR3 1800 memory
2)  An AMD Phenom x4 840 3.2Ghz quad-core processor
3)  2 500gb 2.5" Seagate hard drives
4)  5 1TB 3.5" Seagate hard drives
5)  3 Diablotek DA series 500 watt power supplies
6)  4 2TB 3.5" Seagate hard drives

It was quite a haul, I know.  But now I'm stocked up and ready to go.  I picked up the motherboard and processor to build a new computer for resale.  I already had the case, PSU, ram, hard drive, and other parts so I was able to build an awesome quad core for only $225. :D

Okay, this link might not work. I mean, it does work, but it might not for anyone else. I've never tried linking an eBay item I bought after I bought it. I mean, I wonder if the only reason I can see it is because I have the account that bought it, meaning anyone else who tries looking will get an error or something. I will try. If the link doesn't work, I'll submit the information manually. Quite sad, though, that the shipping is nearly three times the cost of the item. :cry

"$107 for shipping!? I, myself, would like a reasonable explanation as to WHY the shipping is SO much. Despite what it is, that alone makes me wary to buying it."

I know, right? I can't imagine it being very heavy. I sent a GoF member in another country a package that weighed several pounds, and it was sent expedited, and the shipping cost was much lower. Mm, maybe the economy is worse in that state?

The shipping for that item may seem unreasonable, but you'd be surprised how expensive it is to ship a large object like that.  Weight is only part of the equation.

As for things I've purchased lately, nothing very exciting.  A DVD drive for a laptop I got in a trade-in for free.  For only $27.89 (the cost of the DVD drive) I got an awesome dual core Gateway laptop with 4GB of ram and a 250GB hard drive.  Not a bad deal if I do say so myself.  Oh, and I also got a $14 keyboard for an older dual core Toshiba laptop that I paid $75 for.  As I said, not very exciting.

Yes I'm saving for Christmas as well. Each year I buy my self a expensive gift. Because I work hard for it. So I'm saving up for a 3DS.

Just recently, I put down a preorder for God of War: Origins and ICO and Shadow of the Colossus Collection.  So they should be arriving here on the Thursday when they get released.

I was going to buy the Collector's Edition. I still don't know whether to buy it or not, due to the price. I am looking forward to the game, though. I just bought the dual pack and I am loving the first game. It's like an interactive movie. I can't believe I refused to play it just because I didn't want to ruin my Tomb Raider experience. The game is just like Tomb Raider, but it plays better and has a better storyline. I still love Tomb Raider though, which I plan on buying the reboot next year. I have Uncharted to play until then.   :smile

Well I'm a pretty hardcore fan, Justin, that's why I got the collector's edition, and also because they're releasing almost everything that the fans asked for in this special edition, so I'm pretty pleased with that. :) It's entirely your choice, but I'm sure the standard edition would be just as good. :yes I'm glad you're a fan though. :smile I was skeptical of it at first, mostly for the same reasons you were, but then I tried it and I was like... why didn't I play this earlier?! If you haven't played the second yet... on man... it gets SO much better than the first, though the first is still really good. :yes

As for me, I bought a new iPod adapter for my car, one that goes right into the casette player, so no more loss of audio quality due to conflicting radio wavelengths. :DD

I bought a supertaster test. Well I ordered one a week ago, and it just came in today. I am indeed a supertaster. It would explain my hatred for things green and/or leafy. Apparently, supertasters tend to have a high response to bitterness.  :x I don't eat bitter things. The taste is just disgusting. And whatever it was I put on my tongue made me throw up really bad.  :x  :x That had to be the worst taste ever. My mouth is still reeling from the taste.  :confused
It only cost me a few bucks though, so that's not too bad. But that taste...That taste was horrifying.  :x

I've recently been stocking up on hard drives due to the flood in Taiwan and the recent hard drive shortage.  Prices are absolutely SKYROCKETING!  Even the refurbished units I frequently purchase on eBay have nearly doubled in price.  But here's an idea of what kind of purchases I make.  These are the last few items I've purchased off eBay recently:

I try to buy as little off eBay as possible.  I really dislike buying stuff online and if I can get it locally or get the client to purchase the item instead, I'll do that.

Land Before Time VCD's! Three of 'em I bought today.

-The Land Before Time IV - Journey Through the Mists
-The Land Before Time X - The Great Longneck Migration
-The Land Before Time XI - Invasion of the Tinysauruses

Each VCD costs 78 pesos (Pesos=currency in the Philippines) so that's 78 x 3 = 234 pesos

I'm so lucky!! Very very lucky! :smile

I have always wanted an alligator snapping turtle but I could never find a breeder that sold them. I finally found one in Arkansas! I finally get to add one of these little dinosaurs to my collection!  :smile

All LBT Fans shall be jealous of my most recent purchase that only cost me $39.00 plus $8.00 shipping.

(http://www.mediafire.com/imgbnc.php/00cb3a64434535948e3991e7fab35a3899631f43a40a51bfc0c970c84fa9a06f4g.jpg) (http://www.mediafire.com/imageview.php?thumb%3D5%26quickkey%3Dx9w2uxha16x5tqk)

It's 1 to 10 on VHS.

Once this arrives at my apartment, I shall be selling 2 to 5, (Mainly because I already have them.) but for now, I'm sure a number of you wish to kill me.

*puts up forcefield*

Okay, I'm ready!

EDIT: Oh, and as a free gift, I also get The Sing-Along Songs on VHS.  Now I bet you're more jealous. :)

Several NES games, over the course of the past 3 or 4 months, as well as various parts for it.  Glad I can fix the NES now, so mine's working fine.  Oh, and a couple different editions of the Apocrypha, , and a better-made 1611 KJV, for my studies, as well as a few other books - but that's another story.

EDIT: Forgot to post this, but I also bought some spicy stuff, several months back.  A small jar of Red Savina Habanero powder (which turned out to be great on popcorn), two jars of regular Habaneros (man they've got a kick), and a bag of dried Ghost peppers, which are among the spiciest in the world.  Yeah, I like spicy stuff.... :p

Boy, Panicky Petrie, your colection looks good! I already have 4, but it would be cool to get 2 and 3 in classic original vhs form!  :exactly

I'd buy them if I foud them somewhere, but my mom would't be happy if she found out about it...maybe I'll purchase them with my own money without her knowing. I know it's wrong to go behind someone's back, but...it would work out better if she didn't know, and I wouldn't be hiding anything all that bad.

Hope to find them somewhere!  :D

Bought the Steam version of Sonic 4 Ep. I today. I've already tried the console version of this game before, but - being an old-school Sonic fan - I just wanted to show SEGA that I approve of them trying to bring the blue hedgehog back to his roots. I had decided to buy two Lego sets while my family and I were at Wal-Mart a few days ago: a moon buggy (37 pieces) and a space shuttle (231 pieces). However, my dad is now insisting that I should start spending my own money if I want to buy things for myself, which won't be possible until after I start looking for a job, so at this time I owe my dad $35.

A few months ago, my dad got me a credit card with the intention of helping to build credit for me (which is currently non-existent). He will be paying the bill each month, but it's not like I buy a lot of things. (There will likely be some months where I don't buy anything at all.)

A few days ago, I decided to use that credit card for the first time. In this case, purchasing two Lego sets online. I was convinced these sets were limited-edition, so I decided to get them as soon as possible: the NASA Mars Curiosity rover ($30), and the DeLorean Time Machine from "Back to the Future" ($35). Due to some promotion, another smaller set came with it for free. Add the over $8 in shipping to that for a total price of $73.

I honestly can't wait until it arrives. :)

Earlier this week, I made a huge purchase of Lego sets, all from the LEGO Movie theme. I was interested in getting as many sets as possible from that theme (kinda like I used to with Bionicle, years ago), and since some of those sets are now starting to be discontinued, I knew that I was running out of time to get them. However, After I had added up the total cost of getting all of them, I decided it was probably best to set a limit somewhere and pass on a few of those sets.

Out of all 20 sets from the LEGO Movie theme, I now have 14 of them (I passed on the remaining 6 since they don't include any of the main characters). Among those sets are some small ones at around $14 each, other modest sized ones at around $40, and (easily the biggest purchase I've ever made) MetalBeard's pirate ship at $250. (With over 2700 pieces, it is by far the biggest Lego set this household has ever gotten.) I know that sounds like a staggering amount of money to spend on Lego sets (especially that very big one), but for a Lego enthusiast like myself, I see it as money well spent. :)

Wenger army knife and a zippo lighter. Also some games from Steam which went on sale (mostly copies of the games I already had like Worms: Clan Wars and Damned so I could gift them to my friends and play with them). :)

Mostly groceries, since I'm trying to save money so I can go overseas again.

I do need to get a ball bearing repaired on my car, though.  It's starting to squeal like nails on a chalkboard.  That'll have to be next week😉.

Despite all the negative stories about knock-off Dualshock 3 controllers, I went ahead and bought one. It's silver. I was very nervous that it wouldn't work, but it works very well 😥. The only problems, though not really problems, are the haptic feedback isn't as strong as in the official controller and the PS button slips under the casing if pressed too far down. I'm sure the durability is a lot lower, but the fact that it works is all that matters. It should hold until I can get an official controller.

Last weekend, I took advantage of a sale on Steam to purchase a bunch of Lego video games. With all but the most recent ones available for 75% off, I managed to get 13 games (plus some DLC for a couple of them) for a total of just over $77. I'll admit that I'm unlikely to get around to playing many of these games for a while, but to get that many major games from over the past eight years for so little was something I just couldn't resist.

Some good purchases there.  :Mo

In my introduction post in The Welcome Center, I mentioned that I hadn't seen any of the LBT sequels in recent years and that I was a bit apprehensive about it, but a few people told me I should watch them anyway. So that's what I decided to do. I ordered the complete collection (https://www.amazon.com/Land-Before-Time-Complete-Collection/dp/B01DLVAI6K/ref=sr_1_1?crid=26KIFZZK0LBSR&keywords=the+land+before+time+collection&qid=1555096394&s=movies-tv&sprefix=the+land+before+time+c%2Cmovies-tv-intl-ship%2C231&sr=1-1) from Amazon just yesterday.

Also, I recently ordered this custom-designed shirt:

Haha thanks! Glad to know I made some good purchases years ago ;) I still have them all!

In my introduction post in The Welcome Center, I mentioned that I hadn't seen any of the LBT sequels in recent years and that I was a bit apprehensive about it, but a few people told me I should watch them anyway. So that's what I decided to do. I ordered the complete collection from Amazon just yesterday.

Also, I recently ordered this custom-designed shirt:

This is great! Are you going to watch the sequels anytime soon? Also that is a lovely print. I've never worn any LBT clothing as far as I can remember, but I hope you can wear it with pride :D

I recently bought some furniture (boring adult stuff, I know). For the first time in my adult life I have an outdoor area I can actually sit in, even if it is right next to a busy street :PCera

I got an outdoor lounge set, with a little glass topped table in the center. Everything is modular, so I can move things around and make a bigger seating area (space permitting) when I have guests over. Also bought that green bin, so I don't have to smell the trash when I relax outside, haha. Really looking forward to sitting outside when temperatures start to rise a bit!

Yes, the Harry Potter fan in me was quite pleased. Same with the Divergent book set; I loved those books, but I know very few other people who've read the series.

Re: the shirt, thanks. I wasn't sure how the image was going to look, but I was satisfied with how it turned out. I have worn it out and about a couple times and already I got a few comments on it. It was my first time ever ordering a custom shirt. Shows how much of an impression the film left on me.

And yes, I do plan on watching the sequels fairly soon. Once my DVD set arrives I'll probably get started on that.

Awesome! I'm a big Potter fan too - grew up with the books and it definitely inspired my love for fantasy in general. I really liked the Divergent books, and other books in that genre. Haven't read any in a while now, though. Cool to see someone here has read them too, high five!

I think I accidentally already posted this on some other topic by identical name, but here it is nevertheless.  :SmugSpike

I have bought many books this year, mostly about sci-fi series dubbed Halo. But I also bought something that'll help me improve as a writer; The Emotion Thesaurus: A Writer's Guide to Character Expression. This book has helped me much so far, and I recommend anyone that struggles with writing to pick this one up and many other guides like this book.  :)

I did some digging (as one does on an ancient forum like this) and found this topic (feel free to revive it, by the way):
http://www.gangoffive.net/index.php?topic=10421

I seem to have stated book 3 as my favorite. Now about 2 years ago I re-read all the books, finally reading them from an adult perspective. I no longer find book 5 boring, since I understand it better now. I'm not a big fan of picking favorites, but I think I prefer the final book over all others now. It ties things together beautifully and it tends to make me cry on certain chapters. I don't have a favorite movie :)

Do you know how long it's been since you last saw them? For me when I re-watched the original film, the last time had been over 15 years ago.

Same thing with the sequels. I know I've seen at least a couple of them as a kid, but enough time has passed now that it'd almost be like watching them for the first time. And several others I haven't seen at all.

I bought the new Rammstein album for 15€. The album itself has no title and the cover just contains a matchstick. Even if it's minimalist, the cover fits the band, since they are well-known for their pyrotechnic which the band performs on concerts.

The track list is as follows:

1. Deutschland [Germany]

2. Radio [radio]

3. Zeig Dich [show yourself]

4. Ausländer [foreigner]

5. #Inappropriate title to name it here.

6. Puppe [doll]

7. Was Ich Liebe [what I love]

8. Diamant [diamond]

9. Weit Weg [far away]

10. Tattoo [tattoo]

11. Hallomann [helloman]

“Deutschland” were published on the 28th march and reached the top of the German charts quickly. It reached over 50 million clicks on YouTube to date. A Single “Deutschland” with this certain track and an additional remix was published at the same time. Their new album got announced, too.

This song was a surprise, because Rammstein published their last new song back in 2009.

The Music video got announced by a short clip one day before, which caused a type of scandal because of the content. It was a clip from the actual video.

The final Music video appeared the day later, and I was able to watch the premiere on YouTube!   :DD

I would like to move on to the next track, “Radio”, which got also published on several platforms like YouTube and Spotify just like “Deutschland”. This happened on the 26th April. Even though it got a less good feedback than “Deutschland”, my friends for example don't like this song, it is my absolute favorite out of the whole album! I remember listening to it in an endless loop for hours while doing fanart.

The other tracks were published together with the album. They differ from each other quite a bit. While “Zeig Dich” is very active concerning voice, music and lyrics, “Diamant” is calm. As usual for Rammstein, their Lyrics are very deep and have sense. Even if they are hard sometimes, they have a meaning and it creates a lot of room for interpretation.

At this point I would like to mention that even if Rammstein's songs are controversial sometimes because of their lyrics and music videos, not any of their songs contains something bad like discrimination. In the song “Ausländer”, for example, is nothing mentioned that could be discriminatory to any person, at least in my view. And in “Deutschland”, they also mention bad things about Germany so that it becomes relatively neutral.

A direct example for their good lyrics is “Diamant”. In short, the song is about the love of the lyrical-I. In the refrain, it says:

“Du bist schön wie ein Diamant.”, what means: “You are beautiful as a diamond.”

But at the very end of the song, the Lyrical-I says:

“[Du bist] Wunderschön wie ein Diamant, doch nur ein Stein.”

“[You are] as beautiful as a diamond, but only a stone.”

This phrase was like a plot-twist to me. I mean, diamonds are indeed very beautiful, but they are still only stones, that's also right.

I don't listen much to other metal-bands or “Deutschrock” bands, but as far as I know, Rammstein is a bit extraordinarily. Their kind of singing differs from other bands in my opinion.

This Album got also released as a “Special-Edition”, but the only difference between the “normal” and the “Special” edition is the bigger size of the packing and thus the bigger size of the booklet, but there aren't any extra-tracks or some other bonus material as far as I know.

I listened to this album over 10 times now. This was definitely a very good purchase!  :)

A couple days ago I went to my local video game store and bought the Luigi's Mansion remake for 3DS. I used to own Luigi's Mansion on Gamecube years ago (before my copy mysteriously vanished one day...), and I still own its sequel, Dark Moon, also on 3DS. But it's my first time owning the 3DS remake. Really looking forward to playing it. The original Gamecube version was a good game, but I'm excited to see the enhancements they've made to it.

I haven't yet had the chance to read this one, but I heard it's a very good one by many people on the internet. It's going to be amazing to see how I'll like this one, but as there are only a select few Halo novels I dislike, and they just happen to be from the same author, I have no worries that this will disappoint me in any way! :^^spike

Well look at that. You can input "salmon" into the color field and it'll accept it. I discovered that just now. Although in this case pink is closer to the actual earbud color. Sorry salmon. Better luck next time.

To be fair though, I’ve never heard of anyone making wires pink instead of the normal white color. I’m pretty sure it was packaged pink because the part near the earbud speaker is pink. The way they showcased it is still misleading though. :rolleyes

Those headphones I posted earlier (not the earbuds) actually do have pink wires though. And I also have an older set of earbuds which have orange wires, so I don't see why they couldn't have made my new set of earbuds pink.
x(cera

But as I said, I like the white design as well.

So I unpacked them today, and it turns out they're mostly white. It was just the packaging that was predominately pink for some reason. Oh well, I like white too.

I used to have these headphones! Their quality ain't the best, but they're relatively cheap. I usually go for the aqua blue color.

Anyway, I bought an alarm clock today to go with my two phone alarms+one other alarm clock. :Mo

It’s Sterling Silver. There was also an option of Oxidized Sterling Silver, but I prefer my necklace to be shiny. :p

Thanks! I realllllly love the backyard, it's so big and the whole house feels very spacious!

Yeah I ended up way overbidding due to the housing situation (which I'm sure is collapsing now due to covid-19... oh well ;) ) It ended up costing me 375k, which is an insane amount of money, but it should give me a nice house in a nice neighborhood in which I should be able to live for 30+ years if all goes well. Plus I'll only live 30 minutes cycling from my job, which is a huge improvement over 1+ hours in public transport ^^

Thanks Owls! The house is actually from the 80s, but the current owners took really great care of it so it is in a very good condition.

375K, behemoth purchase! A friend of mine was able to cycle to work and back, he loved it. Great exercise and a break from traffic congestion. Also good for the environment.

For real? From the 80's? If so, that house has been extremely well-kept over the years and they did an amazing job with it. Honestly, I wouldn't have been able to let go of house so beautiful such as this. :p

That's what you get for wanting to live in/near a big city, in a house rather than an apartment. Most houses we looked at actually started bidding at 375K so in that respect we got "lucky".

Indeed! We wanted something modern and I was quite against houses from before the turn of the century. However these people took such good care of their house and did many renovations over the years, which led to this house being quite modern on both the outside and the inside, while being a lot more spacious than newer houses. Win-win! :)

@Mumbling: Thank you! :)

I took a look at the photos of your newly purchased home, and I’m widely shocked and amazed of how much you garnered from only a purchase of $375k. It’s a humongous amount of money to spend in itself, but I only expected this level of modernization, cleanliness, vividness, and beauty from a prize range of greater than $500k at the very least. But then again, housing prices very greatly depending on location. It was also very nice as you already said of the previous owners preserving 80’s built house, which I also bet kept the price down after a terrific renovation. Bonus points for the nicely trimmed hedges in the front and backyard, which reminded me of the French gardens I saw at Oheka Castle on Long Island as part of a school field trip. I can never imagine a backyard without grass though — but hey, no lawn mower maintenance, am I right? :lol

Thanks for the compliments everyone. I can't wait to move in in two months from now.

Loving the different reactions to the price of the house. Really says a lot about different cultures and what is "normal" for everyone :lol

For me personally, the house is definitely on the expensive side. Just about 4 years ago a similar house sold in the same street for just 265k. But with the housing marketing being what it is (large demand, little supply) I am just glad to have found a house that we both love and has all the things that we desire in a house. In the end the price per month is very close to what we pay in rent now - so a big win there.

I recently purchased a new chair for myself. My previous one was basically antique and broken, so it was about time to put my money into good use. I got it for 179€, which was not bad as I really liked how comfy it was. A brief conversation with the salesperson also brought up an interesting topic as more and more people have invested money in work chairs. I wonder why? :p

Nice! KOTOR was a fun game.

About a week ago I got some new stuff for my camera. On the right is a new 35mm prime lens. It's a fixed focal length so that means I cannot zoom with it, but it's a cheap option for a good quality lens. Fixed focal lengths also force you to move around, which can help with thinking about changing your angles and improving your photography in general. The thing on the left are macro extension tubes. Basically just hollow tubes to increase the focal length of a lens and is a cheaper way to give macro photography a shot without buying a dedicated lens.

2. I added the following critters to my plushie collection: Bull moose, elk, deer. I was in a cervine mood.  Disappointed that I can't find female versions of these though, particularly a cow moose since a character from a story I wrote was a female moose.

I can't believe I haven't commented in this topic at all this past year, despite the government stimulus money I had received a few months ago. Anyway, the very first thing I purchased with that government stimulus (sometime back in early May) was a new iPad, along with a special case with a built-in keyboard, for a total cost just under $600. This has allowed me to essentially replace my old laptop to have a large mobile device that I can use to browse the internet and work on my fanfiction writing at any time and any place (my writing progress has been admittedly slower than in previous years, but it's definitely nice to be able to simply open the tablet and add notes as soon as I come up with new ideas, rather than risk forgetting about such ideas by the time I have a chance to get more writing done). Not to mention, having a larger screen and storage space than my phone will make game apps much more practical (such as a few Lego mobile games I've been interested in trying out).

I also purchased several Lego sets over the last few months. Here's a list of them and how much I spent of them:
NASA Space Shuttle Discovery (https://www.lego.com/en-us/product/nasa-space-shuttle-discovery-10283); $200
World Map (https://www.lego.com/en-us/product/world-map-31203); $250
Empire State Building (https://www.lego.com/en-us/product/empire-state-building-21046); $130
New York City (https://www.lego.com/en-us/product/new-york-city-21028); $60
Bricks Bricks Plates (https://www.lego.com/en-us/product/bricks-bricks-plates-11717); $70
Creative Building Bricks (https://www.lego.com/en-us/product/creative-building-bricks-11016); $50
Creative Fun (https://www.lego.com/en-us/product/creative-fun-11005); $40
Creative Transparent Bricks (https://www.lego.com/en-us/product/creative-transparent-bricks-11013); $30
Blue Baseplate (https://www.lego.com/en-us/product/blue-baseplate-10714); $8
White Baseplate (https://www.lego.com/en-us/product/white-baseplate-11010); $8
Gray Baseplate (https://www.lego.com/en-us/product/gray-baseplate-10701); $15
Around the World (https://www.lego.com/en-us/product/around-the-world-11015); $50
Space Shuttle Adventure (https://www.lego.com/en-us/product/space-shuttle-adventure-31117); $40

In total, that's nearly a thousand dollars worth of Lego products I've purchased throughout this past year. Yeah, I went on quite the Lego shopping spree, and in all honesty, I seriously doubt I'll be spending anything close to that much in such a short period of time anytime soon.
