"Flyer, I shall end your life as you've requested but before I do, may I ask for your name? I will remember you even if we've only known each other briefly. My name is Lizzie, I hope you'll be happy wherever you go from here...

Samara knew that she had a content smile on her face and that the longneck could see it. She was surprised, however, that the longne- no Lizzie wanted to know her name, what should it matter, she was a nobody, someone not important. She humored the longneck though,

"I am Samara and... thank you, for helping me with this."

Samara closed her eyes, felt the pressure increase before everything turned dark, darker than anything she had ever seen before and a rush of warmth enveloped her, which felt like wings covering her before she lost all senses and her body ceased to breath with only a single thought running across her mind... Thank you, Lizzie, for being the only friend I had in this life and I hope that you will be able to live with this eventually....

"Fine, let's - let's get it over with then..."

Samara felt a smile grow on her face and felt the longnecks foot touch her neck. While she was lying down she thought about all that she had experienced, could her family be proud of what she had accomplished in her short life? Feeling the foot give a bit of pressure on her neck made her realize how fragile her neck actually was, a simple twitch would be enough to end it.

"You can c-count on me. If this is what you desire, I will send you off. Don't really know how but... I will..."

Samara felt a twisted sense of satisfaction once she heard this. The longneck was willing to grant her wish, despite knowing that she might never sleep normally again? She felt her heart rise, it was finally time, she could finally go and would not have to worry about whether she would live to see another day or whether she could find food to survive.

"C-can you crush my neck? I heard it was the least painful and I want to see the sky one last time before heading off." Samara felt sad, despite the fact that she would finally get peace, she was leaving the longneck alone. She just wanted to be selfish for something only she had control over though. She just hoped that the longneck would be able to live with what she did, eventually.

It was quiet. No sound escaping from the flyer nor the longneck as they searched throughout the barren landscape for a stick that could finish it. The air was heavy with regret and solemn determination as they traveled. No words were needed to convey what they were feeling, words couldn't explain what Samara was feeling either way. She lost track of how long they were searching for feeling like it was barely a minute yet when they stopped it dawned upon them how long they had been searching for; the bright circle was already moving down under the horizon and shadows were beginning to get longer.

Samara was beginning to get angry, why did the world have to torture her like this, why couldn't it simply grant a stick which they could end it with, couldn't the world see that she was tired of living, tired of having to fall and shakingly stand back up? She was tired of running, tired of cowering she just wanted peace, safe somewhere where there was no famine, no danger of being hunted and a place where she could be held lovingly without having them ripped away again. Yet this... this world ripped that all away, demolished everything she held dear and then watched as she suffered and cried.

She grabbed a stick that was laying on the ground and threw it away in anger, watching as it turned to dust halfway through the journey to the ground. She could feel the worried look the longneck was giving her and ignored it, she didn't need the pity the longneck was giving her it would only make her feel worse for attempting to end it. They would not find a sturdy and sharp enough stick if the area didn't change, but she didn't want to wait that long, maybe the Longneck would help her? The longneck should be strong enough to end her, but would she do that to the Longneck? She knew that the longneck was tearing up inside from her decision and did not want to worsen it, but she just wanted to escape once more.

She steeled her heart and prepared herself to say the words without shaking or hesitating. "C-can you perhaps..." she trailed off, still doubting her decision, would she ask the longneck to end her, could she do that to her? She shook her head, she could feel the gaze of the longneck on her and continued, "Can you end me.... please? If we continue on like this, we'll have no stick that's sturdy and sharp enough and I can feel that you're tearing yourself up inside as well, why not get this over with?"

Samara breathed out, there, she had said it and from the look in the Longneck’s eye, she knew that it had her hard. She hid a wince, she knew that it would not be easy for the Longneck to make that choice but she just wanted to get it over with.

"Flyer, what if, say, you do as you say and kill yourself. I keep going and find a better place, survive, find friends or a herd? I might make it to adulthood and have a family one day? Rest assured, I don't want this shit life to continue but if I kill myself I'll never be able to tell if I might have made it after all."

Samara knew that the longneck was right. If she ended it here then she would never know if there was indeed a safe haven for everyone out in this wasteland. The longneck probably still had some family or relatives left that she could return to once she reached the safe haven. She had no one anymore as they were all killed when she was fleeing.

"You might still have some relatives left if you arrive at the safe haven. I have no one and no one would want to take me in as well. Why would they? I'm just a flyer." The words about how she was pointless were not said, but were conveyed nonetheless. "I have made up my mind and there's no changing it. I'm sick of living a life where the destination could be a farce."

With that said, Samara turned around to walk back and find a sharp stick to end it with, her eyes holding a strangely determined glint to them.

6
"- D-do you really... w-want to kill... yourself?"

Samara breathed in deeply, this was it. This was the point she had been waiting for, once she answers yes then the longneck will leave her alone. She would finally be able to end it all. A small smile grew on her face at that thought, she would finally be able to be at peace!

"Yes. I just don't want to live in this hell anymore. I-" she deeply breathed in again, a slight hiccup being the only indicator that she was in fact, sad. "-just want to be at peace. I've had enough." some tears began to fall from her eyes.

"I've had enough of hoping in something that might not exist."

"We might be strangers to each other, only travelling together for convenience and mutual protection, but we are stuck in the same rotten log. You can talk to me-"

Samara did not bother listening any longer to the longneck behind her. Couldn't the longneck see that she just wanted the pain to end? She had seen enough of whatever the world wanted to show her. Samara knew that these thoughts were not healthy but she couldn't bring herself to care anymore, she was done with it. With life and everything in it. The stench of vomit made her want to throw up again but she managed to hold it in.

"-for each day I'm struggling too. bad feelings... they are like... like a never-ending abyss dragging you down, and down... and down..."

Samara slightly flinched, she had forgotten that she was not the only one that did not have a happy story the last couple of weeks,  This was not going to deter her however, her plans came up in her mind again, tonight. She was going to end it tonight.

Wondering what she should tell the longneck, who she realized, was looking at her with a slight expression of disgust from the vomit on her body she knew that the longneck would not let her go that easily so she might as well tell the longneck of her plans and apologize as well, apologize for the fact that the longneck would have to continue the journey on her own.

"....Fine, the problem is.. I don't want to continue anymore I-" here she hesitated, would she be able to say it? Would she be able to say that she wanted to end her own life, be so selfish? "-I want to end it. My life, I mean, for weeks my dreams have nothing but nightmares and I just can't continue like this. Wondering every day if this is the last, trying-" the words kept coming out and she could not hold them back anymore, the words she had kept bottled up for so long were finally bursting out. "-to be brave, trying to put a confident front knowing that the journey we are taking will probably end up in our death, I can't take it anymore so please. Please let me continue with this and end it, please!" she was crying, she realized, crying for it all to end. She could not see what the longneck's reaction was, but she hoped that the longneck would just grant her wish...

"Hey flyer, are you alright?"

Samara quickly turned around to see the Longneck walk towards her with a concerned expression on her face. Samara's heart was beating quickly due to the scare the longneck gave her. Annoyance rose up from within her, why was this longneck wasting her time, she wanted to find a stick with which she could end it fast and the longneck was just holding her up.

"Yeah, I'm alright, just had a bad dream."

This was a lie, Samara knew that, she was not alright, even now she could slowly feel the urge to end herself grow bigger and bigger. There was no changing her mind now.

Samara's sleep was not peaceful, not even close to it. Screams filled the air, wet noises sounded around her and fluid splattered around her. The surroundings were dark yet tinted with a scarlet-red. Samara's vision blurred after she heard the familiar screams around her, she fell on her knees and sobbed, trying to curl into herself. The screams began to get louder and she realized that her own screams were mixed into them. The predatorial roars echoed loudly around her while she began to panic, her survival instincts were going into overdrive as they tried to escape from the ensuing torment.

Samara was shaking and twitching uncontrollably from fear, she felt an unimaginable pain start to form in her chest as her heart just could not process the amount of fear she was experiencing. She suddenly felt the pain burst before everything began to feel numb and the darkness was slowly getting replaced by a blinding white. Samara felt something warm cover her, reminiscent of how her parents used to cover her when she was scared before she was engulfed by the empty whiteness.

She lurched forward and emptied her stomach to the ground next to her, her heart was beating mildly and she could feel the adrenaline course through her veins, eyes rapidly darting around the clearing they were in. The peaceful feeling she just experienced was gone and she was craving for it again. When was the last time she felt so at peace, so happy? Her arms gave out under her and she fell in the pile full of bile she had made. She didn't want to continue like this anymore, in a constant fear of safety, of home. They were getting nowhere after all, they had been traveling for days, maybe even a couple of weeks and they were not getting any closer to this fabled 'safe haven' the longneck spoke of.

Speaking of the longneck, Samara looked to her side to see that the longneck was still sleeping, not particularly happy nor peaceful but having a better dream than she had despite laying on an uncomfortable surface. She shook her head, this was it, she was going to end it tonight, she didn't want to continue anymore. She had seen whatever the world wanted her to experience, it was time to rest eternally now.

She thought about how she wanted to end it, maybe with a sharpened stick if there were any not yet fully burnt. Starting to search around for any sticks she froze when she heard a noise behind her, slowly turning around she saw that the longneck was wide awake, and looking at her with a concerned expression.

10
The sound of the Longneck's voice below her snapped Samara out of her thoughts and she rapidly looked around just to see that the sun was already rising. Luckily nothing happened while she was not paying attention to her surroundings, which was a first. She never could really remove the tension that her body has had since the night her parents were-

Samara shook her head, now was not the time pondering on things long gone. She had a task to do, she had promised so she could not break that now. Looking down to the longneck below her she noticed that the longneck was looking at her and that the longneck was quite tired. She knew that the longneck asked if she was ready to continue with their journey but the thoughts during last night came back to her. Would there be anything out there? Would she live long enough for her to see it, or would she be crushed with despair when they realized that there was nothing out there anymore. The more she thought about it, the less she wanted to find out.

Shifting her focus back to the longneck below her, she prepared a reply, but hesitated, why does she continue, what is keeping her here and not somewhere in a ditch where she would meet the same lonely end? She shook her head.

"Yeah, let's go."

11
Samara looked up to the sky, sleep was far from her mind right now as she pondered the last few days. Everything changed and not for the better. Who would remember her if she became weak and got eaten by a sharptooth, no one except for the longneck peacefully sleeping below her. She was not made for this, she realized, not made for the horrors of this world that was driven by primordial instincts. Why should she try, sure, if this mysterious place that she and the longneck were looking for actually existed, what then? What would become of her? She saw no future for herself besides the nightmare that they were in now.

The nearby creaking of dead trees brought her out of her depressive thoughts and adrenaline coursed through her body, her live-or-die instincts were still very much active, despite not wanting to continue. There was no sound except for the creaking of nearby dead trees and the soft, almost non-hearable sounds of the longneck sleeping below her.

It would not be bad, she realized, if this was the last thing I see, to experience. But she had made a promise, one that she wanted to keep, she was growing tired though, not of her lack of sleep, but of life. Yes, she thought while leaning back against the tree and growing a sad smile, this would not be so bad at all.

12
Samara woke up with a shock and after looking around she noticed why she woke up. The Longneck was approaching her, probably to say that it's her turn to take watch. She nodded and stood up and flew up to the top of the dead tree she was laying on. She had a good view from up here, enough to keep watch, enough to make sure that they would stay safe, and if not, enough time to wake up her companion and run- or in her case, fly away.

Samara looked at the twinkling lights up far above, mesmerized by the beauty of them along with the Night Circle and wished that maybe, maybe everything will be as beautiful in the end as the lights up above.

"I have trouble falling asleep at night so there's no need to worry. You can count on me, ok? I'll be doing the same during your watch."

Samara was tired, there was no question about that. She knew she had to sleep but there was this nagging feeling in the back of her head, like something was wrong, like something was not all it seemed. Hesitantly she agreed and prepared to sleep. She just hoped that nothing would occur this night.

14
"I like your idea, flyer; this should keep you and me save!" the longneck spoke in appreciation of the idea, a small smile appearing on her face. "Would you like me to keep watch first?"

Samara knew that with the events that had happened the last couple days, that it'd be best if she slept first. So she was glad when the Longneck gave that idea.

"That's fine with me," Samara replied, "Are you sure you can stay up that long though? It's been a tiring the last couple hours."

15
Quote
"There is no safety out here, whether we are sheltered or not. If a Sharptooth catches your scent it will find you... Look ahead, do you see anything else but this plain and flat desert? Where do you think we could find a safe place here even if we walked all night? It'd be a waste of energy..."

Samara knew that the longneck was right, it did not however hinder the fact that they were easy prey, both were tired and would not be able to run for a long time. One needed to watch the other while the other was sleeping. She knew not from hence this thought came, but Samara thought it was brilliant. One slept while the other kept watch, the question was however, who would sleep first, and who would keep watch first?

"I might have an idea. What if one slept while the other kept watch? That way we could regain energy but have enough time to run when we see a sharptooth."

16
Samara heard the questions but was too tired to answer, besides, what should she say? That she was mysteriously afraid of the ground, without having a clear reason as to why she was? She could see that the longneck did not appreciate that she was not answering, so she decided to use a half-truth answer.

"I'm tired but it's not safe here, in the open. How will we be safe out here?"

17
Quote
"It's no use, let's call it a day!"

Samara did not like the sound of that, for some reason she felt uncomfortable standing and even laying on the ground. Like there was this... primal fear of whatever the ground could hold for her. Samara looked around her and saw that there was no cover for as far as the eye could see. She wanted to continue but noticed how hard it is to flap her wings, she was getting tired. She could not hold out for much longer so she had no choice but to go down. She decided to float just above the longneck so that she was not on the ground, but could rest her wings for a while while still keeping an eye on their surroundings.

"Are you feeling alright? Is something bothering you? S-should we... call it a day?"

Samara shook her head, they wouldn't have to stop now, it's still day and the sun is  going down but there's still a couple hours left, so why stop? She then thought of the first part of the question, was she alright? She did not know, but she felt like she was alright, they would continue for now, and find a safe place when the sun would be just above the horizon.

"We won't have to call it a day yet, unless you want to. The sun is still in the sky, so why stop now? Let's continue and once the sun is above the horizon, we can find a safe spot to rest, okay?"

19
She did not know who she was, what was her name, what was her past? She thought yet nothing came to mind. Distant voices became sound around her yet she could not understand what they said. She heard one name being called, Samara, who was that? Who were they? Family, enemies, friends? Nothing came to mind. She kept walking through the shadowy plains which she suddenly found herself in. What was happening? She kept walking until her feet got heavy and she fell down. She did not want to give up, she struggled to get back on het feet and continued walking. Maybe at the end she would finally understand who she was, and who this mysterious 'Samara' was. A distant light was shining in the distance, she kept walking. She stepped through the light and she understood, she was Samara, and she was on her way to a location her companion knew of, yet she knew not where.

Samara did not understand why she fell down, nor why she was so afraid of the ground. Why should she? You could stand on ground, it was safe. Right? She opened her eyes and saw the concerned longneck looking at her, why was the longneck so concerned, didn't she just take a nap on the ground, like others did when they were tired? What was happening, nothing happened. Right?

20
Samara knew this problem would arise the moment they went out of the forest, she wanted to keep going until another forest was found, but the chance of one standing in the immediate vicinity would be next to non-existent. Her body began to shiver against her will, her wings growing heavier and it took more energy to stay afloat in the air, afloat, not even flying. She barely noticed the longneck below her to look up at her and see her shiver. She was getting closer to the ground. Closer to the ground where her family got kil- Someone screamed, it was not until later that she realized that it was her that screamed, her body fell, down to the ground, the cold, cold ground. The ground which may have been flowing with blood recently. She could see them, the death's the screams, her body was beginning to spasm when her mind revolted against her. She could feel the crying, the pain. She could hardly see the longneck in front of her trying to ask if she was alright. It wasn't helping.
