The Party Room / Dinosaurs vs. Dragons!

From a fantasy viewpoint, Dragons would win.

Silver Screen / We're back a dinosaur's story
« on: September 07, 2013, 02:10:16 AM »
I loved it, and as cheesy and weird as it is, it's special to me because it's a film I saw when very young, and then rediscovered when much older. I remembered vague snippets of this film, and eventually managed to identify it when seeing it on TV as one of the many Christmas films (or perhaps it was Easter?). Same thing happened with "Once Upon A Forest", for that matter.

I think someone posted it in another thread, but have you guys seen the deleted scenes from this? John Malkovich as the original voice actor for Professor Screw-Eyes, revealing to the captured dinosaurs how he lost his eye. Funnily enough, I once wrote a theory about how he became the way he was, and it's more or less exactly the story in this scene! Weird...

I just loved the character of each dragon; each unique, and in every scene a combination of adorable and hilarious.

1988 Theatrical Release / Was it true about Original Ending?

I, for one, would have preferred the death ending. It's just more poetic and junk.

Well, there was a Wild Mass Guessing - essentially a strange theory - on TvTropes a while back which suggested that even if not identified as such, it was still happening in the film; all the characters were dead, and the Great Valley was their afterlife. The page is down at the moment, but I think I saved the article to use with a story I never wrote. Let me check...

Yup, I did;

Quote
The earthquake near the beginning was a result of the Cretaceous–Tertiary extinction event, AKA the extinction of the dinosaurs. Meaning everyone was Dead All Along. The film is their journey through purgatory towards heaven, represented by the Great Valley. The dinosaur that comforts Littlefoot directly after his mother's death is an angel trying to get him to overcome his anger over his mother's death, for which he blames both her and (secretly) himself. The lava field is where Cera overcomes her sin of excessive pride, and where the rest of the group learns that there are no "shortcuts" to heaven, and that they must go on the path set for them, and have faith in it, or they'll never get there. The sharptooth is representative of the kids' fear of their own mortality, and by killing him, they have finally let go of all of their earthly attachments, aside from Littlefoot, who still has guilt for the death of his mother. When he finally accepts her death, he finds the Great Valley, along with everyone else, where the rest of their families are waiting for them in the afterlife.

Of course, people pointed out the major flaw with this theory...

Quote
*So his mother went to hell?
**And she still came back to lead Little Foot to Heaven!
***No, she's in heaven. The rest of the dinosaurs are in hell, aka the sequels.

Another person suggested you could view the film as an analogy for religion:

Quote
Littlefoot represents Christian faith. He believes that if you follow the path, no matter how difficult it may be, you will find heaven. Cera represents temptation. She too wants to get into heaven but doesn't want to have to work at it, and so is always looking for an "easy" way. These two spend much of the movie trying to convince Petrie, Duckie, and Spike to follow them. Cera's Heel Face Turn at the end represents the heroes overcoming temptation.
Petrie, Duckie, and Spike each represent a different type of follower. Petrie follows out of fear. Duckie follows out of innocence. Spike follows out of stupidity. All three are easily swayed and have to constantly be kept in line.
The Sharptooth, a mindless force of destruction, represents the sin that threatens to consume our heroes' souls should they ever stray from the path. Notice how when Sharptooth is presumed dead at the beginning of the movie, it is Cera (temptation) who finds and revives him. Notice also that Sharptooth normally only shows up if the heroes stray from the path. Symbolically, just before entering heaven they kill Sharptoothókilling Sin (in a pool of water, similar to a baptism ceremony, as it happens).
The tree-star represents a material possession, which keeps Littlefoot and his followers bound to their mortal coil. They are incapable of transcending the earthly realm while they are dependent on material possessions for comfort. Symbolically, it is destroyed at the halfway point of their journey.
Littlefoot's mother tells him that he can reach the Great Valley by following the sun. In many ancient religions, the Sun = God, so she's essentially saying to follow God. Littlefoot's mother herself could represent the Holy Mother (though combined with the fact that Littlefoot has no father, this interpretation turns Littlefoot into Jesus).

Certainly interesting, both of them - although I don't seriously think either of these would have been intended by the film-makers. As mentioned elsewhere, I wanted to use both of these concepts to make a LBT fic that would take place thousands of years after the events of the films, showing what happened to the last dinosaurs during the K-T event. Think LBT I, but with characters seemingly dying every few chapters (only to realise they were already dead to begin with at the end), and a spectral member of the GOF taking Rooter's place in the story. However, the fic became a jumbled mess of concepts, so I abandoned it.

LBT Fanfiction / "Unused" fanfiction ideas

Another concept from me...which I think I might have mentioned on another board or in one of my fic threads; I've got the story and scenes all planned out, but whenever I try to write it I get writer's block and give up.

Basically, it's a time-travel fic involving a character from the Dragonriders of Pern series; Lytol. For those who haven't read it, Lytol is a recurring character who's gone through just about every form of hell imaginable prior to his first appearance; first his dragon - who he shared a mental connection with - dies in a horrible accident, leaving him psychologically scarred. Next, after returning home and starting a family, his daughters grew up and were coveted by the local Lord (a conquest-mad lunatic), and his whole family fell apart after that. Only after this did things start to go well; he ended up the regent and adoptive father to a young lord of another area.

Anyway, I've already written a fic where Lytol and his lost dragon re-unite - it's in a different area of this forum; with the bulk of my fics - but I wanted to try something different, so here's the story I came up with...as best as I can describe it without having to explain the backstory as well! Be aware that some parts may sound quite stupid as a result...

Lytol falls ill with a fever, and after some fevered dreams, wakes to find himself in his old bed at Benden Weyr - where he lived as a dragonrider. A healer treats him, and he learns that he's back at the day his dragon died...except he's alive; having only gotten severely injured. Lytol assumes he's dreaming, but soon comes to realise he's not. Ultimately, he decides to accept this change and take the second chance he's been given.

The story then jumps ahead a few years, by which point he's properly settled back into his old life (and possibly even met his former wife, by ensuring they met at the right time). Lytol and the rest of his old comrades attend a festival, and after some time, Lytol notices another dragonrider being attacked by another man with a knife. Without thinking, he rushes to his aid, and manages to prevent him from killing the man, but he gets attacked himself and is knocked out.

This attacked man is actually the "Weyrleader" of Benden Weyr, and in Lytol's original timeline, he died in this fight; causing some chaos, but ultimately setting the stage for his young son to eventually take his place and help lead the planet into a new age. When Lytol wakes, he learns that the Weyrleader has survived, but is seriously injured, and will have to step down from his position as a result. Lytol thinks things will work out at first, until the former Weyrleader seeks revenge against the man - a Lord - responsible for the fight, and ends up foiling his attempt to invade and massacre a rival hold...something that would ultimately lead to the sole survivor coming to the Weyr, where their actions would wind up preventing a planet-wide disaster.

With these two changes to the timeline, it's less likely that the events of Lytol's timeline will happen, thus dooming the planet. However, since he was privy to a majority of these events in his time as a result of being the "Regent" of a hold, he knows exactly who needs to meet at what time, and thus the rest of the story becomes him coming up with ways to ensure key events happen (over a span of roughly forty years!)...a task made difficult in that he's not a powerful figure in this timeline, and has little reason or excuse to visit the important figures who will shape the future.

Ultimately, history gets back on track - with a few minor alterations; a la "Night Watch" by Terry Pratchett - and Lytol eventually gains the assistance of the former Weyrleader and another prominent figure - the "Masterharper" - after they notice he's been present for a majority of important events.

The story would eventually end after about thirty years worth of events - at one point he'd have an awkward meeting with the kid who was his adopted son in the original time, but here doesn't know him at all and never will get to know him. At this point in Lytol's original time, an artificial intelligence was discovered, and it aided them for a good deal of time before ultimately shutting itself down. Lytol promptly seeks it out and reveals his full story to it; in the hopes of understanding how he got back to this point in time. After a good deal of thought about this (over several days) and also how the timeline has ultimately worked out in Lytol's favour with each change, the computer ultimately concludes that Lytol actually died of his fever , and this entire event has either been a fevered dream or perhaps a limbo for him to come to terms with everything before moving on.

Once Lytol accepts this, the computer shuts down - mirroring the original scene where it did so - and Lytol leaves with his dragon; with it ambiguous as to whether he's "crossed on" to the afterlife, or whether he's decided to stay in this world for now.

An epilogue would have Lytol being buried in the normal timeline, with those who knew him simply hoping he's at peace now.

...so that's that. I do hope to write this one at some point; here's hoping I can get past the block at some point!

Attic Treasures / Temeraire series by Naomi Novik
« on: September 05, 2013, 06:53:32 PM »
Just finished reading the latest book (which I enjoyed for the most part), and I noticed while browsing this board that I never made a thread for it!

Anybody read these books? It's usually described as "the Napoleonic Wars with dragons", which it is, but's it's a lot more than that. In this world, the dragons are used as an air force, but they're not dumb creatures; they're fully sentient. There's a short story on the official website that gives you a vague idea of what the series is like; http://www.temeraire.org/feast-or-famine/

EDIT: Have to add this image someone made based off the scene; it's just perfect; http://www.deviantart.com/art/Breakfast-Mishap-197479773

I can't really think of a way to describe it any better without giving away plot points, so just read it if you haven't already! Be aware though, book three is a bit slow, and book six is that and worse (nothing beats wandering through wilderness for 2/3 of the book), but the rest are much better.

Don Bluth also thought this rumor was nuts and was never intending that
Quote

I was sure I'd read that somewhere too, but I wasn't able to confirm this when I tried to search for it online.

However, I do remember reading a bunch of threads on the IMDB message boards for the LBT movies, and one user was (or claimed to have been) a former animator at Sullivan Bluth Studios, and talked a fair deal about events during the production of one or two of their movies (in one thread he talked about the discovery of Judith Barsi's murder). He said in one thread that the "original ending" rumor wasn't true, and noted if it had ever existed, he'd never heard Don Bluth mention it (or something like that).

Could be worth looking for again...although this was a LONG time ago that I read this; around the time I joined the GOF? Prob >2006?

...Methinks I might have posted this before?

Anyway, I want to add something before I end my post... The lake in which the Sharptooth drowns could be seen when Littlefoots talks to the cloud looking like his mother and when the Gang (w/o Cera at first) were at the lake the cave (aka the entrance to the Great Valley/the cave I was refering to earlier in this post) could be seen as well

In addition to that, the promontory and the rock that they push onto Sharptooth's head are visible above the lake.

I like to think that "Topps" is his real name, and that "Topsy" was the pet name Tria called him when they were first dating; that way, all the names are correct.

Probably eight for me too...no wait, scratch that; ten! I hated Littlefoot's voice actor; it seemed like he'd suddenly got several years younger in terms of both sound and behaviour, and it just ruined the film for me! It's pretty much the only one of these films I didn't watch several times (or rather, listen to while doing stuff on the computer at the same time) after I got them all; two, five and six (and twelve) became my favourites, seven (and I suppose three) became a close second, and I was largely indifferent towards four, eight and nine (and eleven and thirteen).

Same here; haven't watched the series yet. Although I do have one of the DVDs, the "Through The Eyes Of A Spiketail" one. Saw it in a discount bin and figured that although the rest could wait, I absolutely needed Spike talking for my archives. Should have bought the rest then and there though...they're not so cheap at the moment.

When I wrote my earlier post I briefly toyed with the idea that Littlefoot's Mother might have actually have been leading Sharptooth away from her parents shortly before the Earthshake began; hoping she could throw him off before returning...but then I thought it would make sense to return to them since three Longnecks vs one Sharptooth mean a better chance of survival for the Longnecks. Plus, she's not leading the others; she's just following Littlefoot and Cera. Course, they might not know which way they're running, and they could be mistakenly heading away from their herds...

Tippy is pointless and gender is somewhat undetermined for a child that may not know if it is male or female due to its voice pitch and color scheme.

Heh, that point even made it to TvTropes:
'DudeLooksLikeALady; People's first reaction to finding out Tippy from VIII is male was "So many Fan Fics suddenly got much, much gayer."'

I always got the feeling that they'd slept through the fight, while Littlefoot's mother roused early for some reason, noticed Littlefoot was gone, heard the screams, and charged off to save him. I suppose it could be noted that Cera's parents didn't come to help, so if they slept through her yells than it's not too hard to imagine Littlefoot's grandparents doing the same.

It's worth noting that Littlefoot, his mother and Cera all end up quite far away from their original nesting site as a result of the battle (besides, isn't that how they end up on either side of the divide; the nests were on one side, and Sharptooth chased them so they ended up on the other side?), and I seem to recall there being a shot of Grandpa and Grandma Longneck looking around as the Earthshake begins? Chances are that they were woken up just before the Earthshake began, and as such they didn't have any time to go after Littlefoot and his mother.

Incidentally, this would have meant that they wouldn't have known what happened to Littlefoot or his mother, but they would have been able to see her corpse from that height, and this might have been why they moved on with the others; they could have assumed that Littlefoot died with his mother, or that she died while trying to save him.

LBT Fanfiction / If Only...

You know, I always thought that the Rainbowfaces could have been human time-travelers, just disguised in some way so that they could survey prehistoric times for scientific reasons (or perhaps they're secret cameramen for Universal Studios!). Instead of having them tell Littlefoot they're going to change things for him, perhaps it could be that Littlefoot stumbles across the male Rainbowface (since he's the one who often comes close to giving things away) and mistakenly follows him through a hole in time that brings him to the fight between his mother and Sharptooth...however, his sudden appearance makes enough of a distraction that Sharptooth doesn't manage to bite her back as hard. Before anything else can happen, the male Rainbowface finds him and takes him back to the Great Valley; imploring him to keep this secret for now until he can determine what's changed...and thus the story begins!

Ooh...I just had an idea for a dark sort of ending. Towards the end of the story, events could get progressively worse and worse via the butterfly effect; some disasters from previous movies aren't dealt with in the same way and still affect the valley (for example, what if Mr Threehorn and Cera got caught in the Great Valley fire and gained crippling injuries), some characters might have died...anyway, the climactic bit of the story would be the Rainbowfaces realising this new timeline is unstable and will affect the future too much unless a crucial element is changed. It becomes clear that Littlefoot will have to choose between his mother and his friends...

Obviously, such a choice would be unbearable to make, so he doesn't make it; instead, his mother willingly sacrifices herself (which could show character development if she was still racist towards the others, as some people have suggested she could have been if she'd lived...although personally I doubt it) by going through the portal before Littlefoot can stop her.

There would be a hopeful epilogue...with a bit of a twist. Before leaving, the Rainbowfaces would tell Littlefoot that they would make a small change for him, but they wouldn't tell him what it would be. They leave, and then the story goes back in time to before the first movie, where an adult male longneck is dying in the wildernesses...Bron. They quickly get him back on his feet, and send him on his way...

Still with me? In the "original" timeline, Bron dies while searching for a place for his family, thus prompting his herd to move west towards the Great Valley. At the end of this, the Rainbowfaces save him (thus setting in motion the events of LBT 10...so this would have to take place between movies 7-10) so that Littlefoot will still have a parent in his life...even if he's not present all the time (I imagine Malte would like this sort of scenario...it would give a reason as to why Bron's story seems so odd; the Rainbowfaces did it!). Course, there'd need to be some work done to justify such changes to the timeline...but hey, if Back To The Future can do it, then anyone can!

Argh, listen to me. Too many ideas, not enough time to write them up. Feel free to use these concepts if you like; I'll probably never do anything with them.

The Fridge / How you fell in love with dinosaurs
« on: April 04, 2013, 03:37:18 AM »

Falling in love with dinosaurs... Hmm, well I don't really rememer exactly when I started loving dinosaurs, it was kind of a gradual response after watching the dinosaur-mania of the early nineties: We're Back!, LBT, as well as Dink the Dinosaur  ahh, obscure vids of the nineties.

Ah, another person who remembers We're Back! I used to love that film when I was a kid...only problem was I didn't have it on tape (I'd rented it or seen it on telly or something) and by the time I was old enough to want to seek it out I had no idea what it was called! Luckily it got screened one year as part of the Easter kids movies and that helped me track it down!

Anyway, dinosaurs...dunno, really, I wasn't the kind of kid who was into dinosaurs when I was young - or at least, no more than I was into other things - but I think it sort of happened around the time I started watched the LBT movies again. Don't remember if it was sparked by watching the films, reading Dinotopia for the first time, or just by looking up random dinosaurs on Wikipedia, but something just amazed me and made me go "man, these were some amazing and fascinating creatures"! So I've been a fan of dinosaurs ever since (and dragons; got into them a few years afterwards)!

38
I remember not liking this one as much as the fifth one when I first saw it, but then when I tracked them down on DVD years later that completely reversed; I much preferred 6 to 5! Course, I subsequently came to prefer those ones out of the majority and often had them playing on the TV in the background while playing on the computer...not only were they two of the first few ones I bought, but I also liked most if not all of the songs in them (as opposed to some others, where I only liked half...or none, in 8's case!).

I think I need to see it again to judge it properly. At the time, I was sort of torn; there were bits I liked, and there were bits I really didn't like. Plus I thought it was a bit long at times.

What kind of annoyed me is that there was so much time spent travelling in the wildernesses and yet we didn't really get much time with most of the dwarves; they ended up being extras in their own film! There's all this great stuff that the concept artists came up with for each character, and none of that really got explored.

I should say that I'm confident the next film will be good though; most of the really exciting stuff in the book happens in the latter half, so it makes sense that this film had to have the slow moments.
