I partially posted this on another thread, but last August I emailed Llyn Hunter again. The specific question was asking if future LBT installments could potentially expand upon the sci-fi elements hinted at with the Rainbow Faces in VII (don't ask). I got the following response:

Oh -:

My suggestion is to come up with a package that is not the current franchise but for a new dinosaur show based on what you are suggesting, and pitch it to Marvel / Disney or Warner's/ Cartoon network. You need to do some investigation work, find out who the current lot of producers are over at those studios, and tag up with them on Linked In - that's where they hang, if at all, on the internet.

Being a writer for animation is a tricky thing. It is ALL about the "who you know", not the "what you know."  As a board artist, I'm actually on the bottom of the creative rungs of animation.  Even though I get to make a great deal of the visual story decisions in the end, the main story is decided by a group of people I rarely even get to meet.   Most of my connection to any writer is a name on a script.  That any truly good writing gets done in any area of entertainment actually amazes me, considering how many hands the script goes through before I get it, and then the story is changed and refined dozens of times after it leaves my hands.  Note that NO ONE related to the original product has any relationship to the current Land Before Time franchise.  Like Scooby-doo and Batman, baby dinosaurs will always be popular.  Executives don't make decisions because they are creative, they make them to 1. make money 2. because they think they are creative (Dunning-Kruger effect). Everyone who works in my industry has a good idea for a show.  We have connections, and most of us don't pitch because we know what a total crap shoot it is. My advice it listen to Neil Gaiman's speech then do what he or Steven Spielberg did - fake your way into the business:

Also, Universal Animation is a haphazard place currently run by https://www.linkedin.com/in/ellen-cockrill-1ba95b58/ and she doesn't seem to look at her Linked In.

Remember, the best ideas in the world are in the dust bin or on the cutting room floor,
And on that cheary note, good luck, keep writing - and you at least found me, so maybe you can find someone who can make decisions,

Llyn

It's not much, but last August I did email Llyn Hunter, the storyboard director on XIV, about the current state of Universal Animation:

Honestly I find it concerning that NASA just gave up on their own in-house suit development after spending a lot of money on it. It's part of an overall trend of over-privatization in the American spaceflight industry that I fear might turn NASA into a renter agency if it isn't managed carefully.

For me, it was my mom getting a copy of VIII when I was around 8 years old. I fell in love with the characters as well as the "sciencey" feeling of the world and got VII, IX, and X. VII in particular captured my heart because it featured actual aliens, which was something I was deeply disappointed in for not appearing again in the series. I remember when I eventually watched the original, I was put off by how aesthetically different it was from the sequels I was familiar with. However, as I've grown older, I've also come to appreciate what the original film was trying to accomplish.

Unfortunately, we probably won't see Artemis II launch until Nov. 2024. However, it does appear that Boeing has figured out how to significantly streamline production of the SLS Core Stage, cutting production costs and also allowing a greater production rate that would enable non-Artemis missions, such as cargo launches or unmanned missions:

In other rocketry news, ULA has completed its first wet dress rehearsal for the Vulcan-Centaur:

I think Petrie was a significantly better character in the original movie. He didn't have that annoying speech quirk of using "me" in place of "I," was a bit less pathetic, and actually had a character arc, limited as it was by the runtime of the film.

Fire Emblem Three Houses is my current Switch game of choice, and man is it a great game. Blown away by how many different dialogue options they have, and the cutscene capability to just handle major characters being killed off in previous battles. It really makes your playthrough feel different from everyone else’s. I’m also replaying my favorite RTS of all time Impossible Creatures, and it’s so great, you get to construct your own units using the body parts of various animals. Some of my favorite inventions are antobsters (lobsters with ant heads that can burrow underground and regenerate health), killeenas (hyenas with killer whale heads that have a ranged sonar attack and can swim), and scortures (scorpion vultures that fly, sting, and get pack bonuses.) I made all those, your creatures are gonna be completely different! Everyone should play it at least once, it was so ahead of it’s time.

In that case, there's another game called the Eternal Cylinder you might enjoy. It has a lot of LBT-esque themes as well.

What strategy games are you currently playing, if any?

Pokemon or Digimon?

Neither. Hope that didn't disappoint you. It's just not my cup of tea.

Seeing as you recently mentioned you live in Florida, I'm now curious if you've ever traveled to the Cape Canaveral area to witness any space launches.

Oh yes, definitely. I live in Orlando and as a kid I probably visited the KSC visitor center 40 times. In addition I watched the Space Shuttle launch once when I was 8, and I was present for the first test flight of Orion (EFT-1), the first launch of Falcon Heavy, and even the launch of Artemis I, which was a spectacular experience.

Feathered, or scaled dinosaurs?

Feathered, hands-down. One of the reasons I was never really into dinosaurs as a kid is that I must have subconsciously thought they looked ugly due to how they were depicted in legacy media. It was when I discovered that many of them likely had feathers or some other kind of integument that I truly fell in love with them, as making creatures like Velociraptor look bird-like made them much more compelling. I guess I just like the idea of creating a direct link to the birds that are around us today.

I will say that for dinosaurs that are confirmed to have scales, I prefer it if artists actually do the scales justice by making them as distinct and interesting as the scales of reptiles. Most depiction of "scaled" dinosaurs just gave them mammal-like skin, which made them grotesque and unappealing. This, unfortunately, is a pitfall of LBT's creature designs and is something I hope Universal would correct if they were to reboot the series.

I've been playing The Outsider, an Outer Wilds story mod that recently got released. It adds three hours of new content to the exterior of Dark Bramble and a few of the puzzles have the same "WTF" feeling that some of the base game's puzzles have, which is a great thing in my opinion. You can download it with the Outer Wilds Mod Manager, which can be found in the website I linked. Here's a trailer for it, to show it off:

Nope and I don't intend to. I've heard it wasn't that good.

I'm mainly thinking about my undergraduate research project. It's using deep learning to predict fission gas release in a 2D microstructure of nuclear fuel. Apparently my advisor said it could actually lead to a published paper in a journal.

Besides Earth? Well, it's hard to say.

I've personally held a soft spot for Saturn, not just due to the scientific facts about it but because of various nostalgic childhood educational/science-related media. In terms of science I also think we should definitely be exploring the ice giants, as we've only flown by them once and there's much we have to learn about this class of planet.

As for moons, where do I start? Our own Moon contains a geological record of the entire history of the solar system as well as much of Earth's geological history. With its proximity to Earth, it is the perfect intermediate destination and staging ground for manned interplanetary missions. In terms of scientific interest, I'd also rank Titan, as it is the only moon in a solar system with a thick atmosphere and organic molecules on its surface. Given that it likely has a subsurface ocean, there's a good chance it might possess indigenous life. The same could be said for Enceladus, though I don't know if NASA has detected any organic molecules from its plumes. Finally, the Galilean moons offer many intriguing targets for science, though Jupiter's dangerous radiation belts make exploration of that system rather difficult.

What's your favrouite film?

Interstellar. It holds a special place in my heart because it showed that the kind of science fiction stories I am interested in could appeal to a general audience.
