Title: Power Posting
Post by: Paradise Bird on November 01, 2011, 08:12:04 AM
I recently heard this term of power posting. Its about people who post around 70-200 post a day in a forum. If you ask me its like spam but despite that most of the post from power posters are still relevant if not short and often brief. Also power posters are known for necroing threads that are useful and worth discussing for which might reduce duplicates but I don't know past that.

So what do you guys think about post crazy members in foreign forums?

If someone's posting 200 times a day on a forum, it's very annoying and they can't really be adding anything of value to the discussions.  Most boards' admins will contact you if you do that and ask you to limit yourself to 10-20 posts per day outside of the crazy stupid sections and RP sections (if applicable).  Some boards will just ban you without any questions or warnings.

if you are posting that much, either you are posting oneliners or you are spending too much time on the forum. either way, its not good. we have rules against posting in threads after a certain period, six months is the cutoff

Posting to get a higher postcount without concern about the content is what I consider spam.
Don't do this on GOF!
One single interesting or meaningful message is worth more than an infinite number of posts without any meaning or interesting content. The post count is all too often overestimated.

Spaming is prohibited by section 3 of the board rules of the GOF and would therefore be treated as a violation of the board rules. "Power posting" is a euphemism for spamming if posts come without meaning or content!

I guess the key is if it is contributing towards the thread conversation or if it's spam.  I'd guess if the post count is that high it's likely spam.

It's definitely annoying, and I consider it a nuisance.  I've seen it happen multiple times, and outside of RPing or game playing, it's not constructive at all and gets old very quickly.

You're all assuming that these posts come in different threads on a wide variety of different topics. If a user starts, say, a philosophical conversation in The Fridge, and finds a few interested users who carry on a decent conversation for several hours, they could all rack up a decent amount of posts. (Especially if this happens with multiple threads, say a political thread in AM and a LBT-themed one in the general section).
I don't see anything wrong with this since conversations usually involve quick relevant posts punctuated with more meaty ones when a user has something particular to say. Like most things, 'power posting' as this thread defines it is not necessarily spam and depends on how it is used.

^ If there is any substance to the messages it wouldn't be spamming and it is also true that a large number of messages can be posted in a day if there is a lot to be said.
But if there are for example a large number of posts where a user responds to the own messages within minutes always writing just a single sentence (or posting merely a smiley or a couple of them) that would bear a distinct air of spamming and would likely be treated as such. If one forgets to write something in a message just posted it is possible to add it to the message through the edit function (a function which I personally still feel should be limited to a day or two at most) rather than posting it in another message.

Believe me this guy in one of the forums I'm in has officially posted in every picture caption topic in the section dedicated to it. But he is pretty funny so I don't just a bit tired seeing his name everywhere

:exactly  Couldn't agree with you more on that. Since I read all of the latest posts (except most RPs) every day, it can be quite annoying when I have to "keep up" with someone posting every minute or two. <_<

(Sorry about double posting, but I certainty didn't think I had been the last to post in this topic, and I've got something else to say now.)

I certainly would like to know why some people are obsessed with posting more than 10 or 20 times per day. What do they hope to gain? A big boost to their post count?

I'll admit that, in my early years here on GoF, I was somewhat obsessed with my post count (evidenced by my frequent activity in certain party room games until the "It's Party Time" section was created to prevent such habits). These days, I'm more focused on maintaining my status of having 1.00% of all the forum posts. No, it doesn't force me to spam. In fact, it actually encourages me to actively participate in some of these discussions with real thought, because I lately seem to have this tendency to stand back and just read the discussions without participating at all.

I myself is guilty of doing so on here I think I posted more than 20 times a day but I sopped after the warnings. Hence why I don't post much on here anymore. But if people do it I don't mind if they do it it does get annoying but I'm use to annoying people.
