Title: The land before time in a university text

Hi,
today I found something in a university text that delighted me and that I want to share with you. At the moment I am attending a class about the use of films in language teaching at school and in one text from our reader (Engelbert, Thaler: "Teaching English Literature", Paderborn 2008 p. 177) I found this little snippet:

That's really awesome Malte. What do they mean though when they say a book has been written about the film? Or do they just mean the children books that appeared...

^ Indeed, the reference is to the land before time story books. The books to the film.

One thing that has always interested me about The Land Before Time is the original story. I mean this in the sense that it was not based off of an explicit preexisting book or fairy tale.

This seems to be rare for animated kids' films. Most of the Disney and Bluth canons, such as The Secret of NIMH, Snow White, Dumbo, come from preexisting stories. This even applies to famous animated films before these, like Watership Down, The Plague Dogs, and The Last Unicorn.

Am I wrong in thinking that a completely original storyline is unusual?
