With it now being the very week PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii finally coming out, and people finally going through all that back breaking working to get a few extra bucks, sacrificing so much, in some cases where some had only one meal a day, just to save all the pennies needed to buy the console you want, only one question remains...
Which one are you going for?
First contestant, the PlayStation 3.
This little beauty holds so much in it, you'd think you couldn't even lift it off the counter when you come to pick it up. The PlayStation 3 is surprisingly light because it holds a programming part called "The Cell". This special part enables the PlayStation 3 to hold more information and do more jobs then ever known possible within an incredibly small space. (Recent commercial at Wal*Mart gave me this info.) If you have Broadband for internet access, then you can play against others from around the world the very moment you plug it in. The PlayStation 3 is always connected to the Super Speed Information Highway. Every game you play is in High Definition. Giving more detail in games then ever thought possible. It comes with the brand new Blu-Ray. Just like the DVD was to VHS and CD, the Blu-Ray is the next generation in video viewing and data storage. In a split-screen demenstartion, it is shown that the Blu-Ray gives out more detail then that of the DVD. You can also store digital pictures, DVD viewings and other little tibids onto the PlayStation 3's hard drive. Several games within the PlayStation 3 required a brand new way to play. A unique controller, with the tilt function, enables it more control functions to give you the best control possible when playing these unique games. (I do not hold info on which games those are, so you're on your own to find out which ones.) Plus, the PlayStation 3 is backwards compatible. Meaning you can play all the classic PlayStation 1&2 games. So if you want to get PlayStation 3, you might as well make a pretty penny off of that PlayStation 2 of yours. (Or in some cases, use it as a weapon to beat the crap out of the person who gets the last one on the shelf. ) With it being worth every penny of it's unbelievable $600 price tag, this gaming console gives gamers the experience that was never thought possible. For gamers everywhere to finally...
PLAY B3YOND
Geez! I think I sounded like an advertisment there.
Second contestant is the Nintendo Wii
Note: info comes straight from Nintendo Power Magazine.
Prepare for Launch
At long last, Nintendo pulls back the curtain on the Wii launch-date, price, pack-in title, and more revealed!
After months of rumor, speculation, and message-board debate of apocalyptic proportions, Nintendo has finally announced official Wii launch details. The console will hit North American shelves on November 19 for an MSRP of $249.99. Each system will come with a wireless Wii remote and a nunchuk attachment, as well as a copy of Wii Sports, making it the first console to launch with a pack-in title since the Sega Saturn in 1995. Wii Sports is composed of five activities-tennis, baseball, golf, boxing, and bowling-designed to be simple and intuitive enough for everyone to enjoy, and to serve as a showpiece for the controller's unique functionality. Nintendo will also release The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Excite Truck on launch day (alongside a number of third-party titles), and expects approximately 30 games to be available by December 31. First-party titles will have an MSRP of $49.99, but other publishers are free to set their own prices (let's hope they follow the Big N's lead).
The other big news is that the system's interface-called the Wii Channel Menu-will offer a series of onscreen channels that enable a surprising variety of functions. The Disc Channel is where you'll go to play Wii Titles or backwards-compatible GCN games. With the Mii Channel (pronounced Me), users can create playable caricatures of themselves to use in certain games (though it's not yet known which games). The Photo Channel provides a way to upload digital photos from an SD memory card and proform various editing functions or even add music and create a slide show. When connected to the Internet via broadband, you'll also be able to access the Forecast Channel, which provides local weather updates; the News Channel, which lets users access up-to-the-minute news from around the world; and the Internet Channel, which allows you to browse the world wide interwebs if you download the optional Opera browser. There's also a calendar-based Message Board that you can use to leave messages for family and friends, or send text and photos to e-mail accounts or cell phones. Finally, the Wii Shop Channel is where you'll download classic games from the NES, SNES, N64, Sega Genesis, and TurboGrafx-16 for the Virtual Console. Nintendo has yet to announce the Virtual Console's launch lineup and pricing details, but that infromation should be revealed in the coming weeks. Needless to say, we'll have much, much more on the Wii launch in next month's issue. For now, mark your calendars and start saving those pennies; it's going to be an exciting November.-Steve T.
As for which I'm going for, I have picked the Nintendo Wii. Despite how cool PlayStation 3 sounds, I'm not going out and spending $600 for a gaming console anytime soon. Besides, I think I'll enjoy it's unique playing function more.
So, which one are you going for?
-
While they both sound good, the PS3 is too expensive for my taste. My choice will be the Nintendo Wii!
-
I have to agree. it far to experisive for my taste as well
-
I would rather have the Playstation 3. Expensive yes, so I would wait until I can get it at a cheaper price. The Nintendo Wii doesn't look like my cup of tea.
-
Definitely, the Nintendo Wii is for me, 'cause the Super Smash Bros. Brawl is gonna be released for dat console. Wit new chars such as Pit, Meta Knight, Samus in her Zero Suit, and mainly of all, there's gonna be there one of my favorite Nintendo chars; Wario *laughs like him*. I can't wait to get a Wii on my hands and the 12th LBT movie!
-
With the current raging console wars, I'm always torn between Playstation and Nintendo. I probably will be getting both of them at some stage but right now, I don't really have the finance to fork out for EITHER of them LOL :slap I'm always torn between PS3 and the Wii coz I love certain gaming series that are on both consoles. Devil May Cry, Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, Zelda, Smash Bros, Metroid and the list goes on. The way it normally works out is that I get one console and my younger brother gets the other one (worked out that way with the PS2 and Gamecube). But, since both of us are skint at the moment, looks like we'll be waiting a little while. Hopefully by then, the prices would have dropped a bit and console/game bundles will have hit the shelves.
No matter, I can wait! :^.^:

RIP OFF, RIP OFF, RIP OFF! PS3 is a rip off! when it comes out in the UK at 2007/03/17 they want £549.99 that including 3 games. that is a rip off as I say again! if it got equal graphics like Xbox 360. no wonder people turning over to Nitendo and Xbox... I just founf that price on a website and the price is stupidly high. only the rich can buy that console. what is sony playing at?
-
what is sony playing at?
It seems to me that Sony is marketing the PS3 to the more established (or "hardcore" if you will) gamers who are looking for an immersive experience they have never seen before.
The Playstation 3 has more processing power than any desktop computer I have ever seen, not to mention the only gaming system with True (ie. 1080p) High-definition video output for the maximum possible resolution of any TV today. Combine this with a blu-ray player and you have the most powerful consumer computer AND the best, cheapest Blu-Ray player on the market today.
By comparison, Samsung's Blu-ray disc player retails for $999 (in Canada). The PS3, which contains a Blu-Ray disc drive and will play Blu-Ray movies in full high-def just like Samsung's player, retails for $650 (again, in Canada). Anyone who wants Blu-Ray movie capabilities would certainly consider a PS3.
Next come the games: the playstation 3 will be shipping games that have huge fanbases already. The PS3 promises an amazing gaming experience with games like Gran Turismo 5 (next year as far as I know) as well as a host of games that will demonstrate the true power of the PS3. In short, the PS3 is a technological marvel for consumers and the technies among us are eating it up! it's still cheaper than a high-end gaming computer and, let's be honest, there haven't been that many good PC games coming out lately. The PS3 may start to eat into the PC gamer market as it will be a more stable (hopefully), cheaper alternative to online and offline high-end gaming for a number of years.
----------------------------------
Compare this to the Wii, which is marginally more powerful than its predecessor, the Gamecube. The Wii appears to be targetting the mainstream video game fan who likes to spend a few hours a week messing around with his or her games and having a grand ol' time. Wii isn't concerned about top-end HD support nor are they concerned with competing with the X-Box 360 or the PS3 for "who has the most powerful gaming console?"
As a result, the Wii was able to maintain a reasonable price for its market (I think I read $250 as the retail price), not asking everyone who buys a Wii to also buy a home theatre system to make it work to its full potential. The PS3 on the other hand, strongly encourages the use of an HD TV and a surround sound audio system. The Wii seems to be concerned mainly about playability and finding its own niche in the game console market. They don't Want to be a PS3 clone. They want to be themselves, just as the PS3 wants to be itself.
Now why would a Gamecube owner upgrade to a Wii if it doesn't offer a huge technological boost? Well, the Wii is significantly more powerful than the Gamecube But this difference is no where near as significant as the difference between the PS2 and the PS3. Let's look at the price comparisons for a moment:
The PS2 costs about $120 now.
A Gamecube costs about $100 now.
A PS3 costs about $650. 650-120 = a $530 increase in value from PS2 to PS3
a Wii costs about $250. 250-100 = a $150 increase in value from Gamecube to Wii.
What am I saying? The Wii isn't the huge step into the technological future that the PS3 is, but it isn't trying to be. The Wii still looks and behaves like any old game system, minus the new control scheme and other minor enhancements. The Wii isn't trying to intrude into the home theatre enthusiast's world as the PS3 is. The Wii, on the other hand, seems to be content remaining a gaming system: aka. An entertaining gaming experience where the average gamer can pick one up at a local store for a reasonable price, take it home, hook it up, get their friends to buy controllers, and have a blast in anyone's home.
While the PS3 is fully capable of doing that as well, I feel that the PS3 is not Designed so much for that purpose, at least by the way it's marketted. The PS3 seems to be trying to break the barrier between the gaming world and the home theatre/HDTV world. The Wii is simply trying to expand the Gaming world itself by introducing new concepts for How to control and game and how to enjoy a game. The PS3 is fully capable of doing that as well, but it better be, considering the cost!
I honestly think, for most people, the PS3 is overkill unless you happen to own an HDTV or are Serious into games! The difference over the PS2, I don't think is worth the immense cost. On my 33" CRT TV with cheap ol' speakers and a small space to hang out with friends, I'm getting a Wii, if anything. I may even stick with my good ol' gamecube and PS2. We'll see. :yes
The upgrade from a Gamecube to a Wii seems to be the interest in playing the 'upgraded' games (like Smash Bros Brawl) and the new control system (and updated graphics). The Wii is basically a "lite" gaming system for those who want to keep up with the latest games but don't feel that the PS3 is worth the money. The PS3 is for those who consider the gaming experience provided by the PS3 to be worth the extra money compared to the Wii. In the end it's personal preference but I don't see the true value of the PS3 compared to the PS2 or the Wii, at least not yet. B)
-
I am not going to pay out for a HD TV just for a console, MOST ppl don't have a HD TV and those things are costly something like £100 to £200 a time. the PS 3 isn't worth it. and the way sony playing at over in Europe it losing ppl for PS3. many turned to Xbox now fed up with Sony's delays on PS3.
I would never pay out for a console like that. to me its not worth the money. A console for over £500 pounds that is a rip off in my case. a over kill in price just for s game console with some high tech trigs.
in my opition Sony is playing it dangous for the PS3 the price is too high and putting off many people and many of them are unable to pay out for such a stupid price.
Sorry but frm what I see. PS3 isnt worth the cash they asking for. you can easily but a PC for that price and DO a hell lot more with it. plus in USA they said $599 but it not in the states it something like $660 or $700 including the tax. which is even more stupid price. in the end PS3 is isn't worth buy in my case. I will stick to Xbox 360 and Wii. they suit my needs enough for game playing. no need for a thrid.
-
It would seem that most of the votes are in favor of the Nintendo Wii.
I vote is for the Wii, because I am a hardcore Nintendo fanboy, and I've always enjoyed their games more than any other system's. Not to mention I love their controls schemes. Nintendo also knows what their place in this world is as a video game company.
PS is trying to cover too many fields. Not going to work.
I also have a feeling that Sony is over-pricing their silly contraption. I don't care what all one can do with it. I buy game consoles to play games. I already have computers and DVD players, so all I'll ever need a gaming console for is...gaming. Which is why people will be buying these systems. Sony is seriously over-compensating for the fact that their games are not all that good.
I don't have the money to buy the PS3, and I did, I'd spent it on food and heat. I can, on other hand, afford a Nintendo Wii.
-
The Wii and the 360 are somewhat tied. Sony is screwed this time around. No gamer is going out to buy a console with a $600 price tag. Just like SEGA suffered the last console war with it's Dreamcast, all because it didn't have a DVD player and Sony did. Sony and it's PS3 will die horribly in the gaming market because it's too expensive. Both a Wii and a 360 together would cost as much as a PS3. And because of this, Sony will probably go back to making appliances while Nintendo and Microsoft will dominate the gaming market. I'd start off with a Wii because it's the cheapest of the three. Plus it has an awesome motion sensing remote that Microsoft and Sony don't have. Then I'd get a 360 when Halo 3 comes around. But never in hell will I get a PS3, because it's Sony's fault that SEGA died so early in the last console war, and the Dreamcast's death will be avenged! Speaking of which. In a plea to sanity, these fights between gamers who are strictly Nintendo, strictly Sony or strictly Microsoft should just stop. Whenever fights rack up just because of a bunch of stupid video game consoles it makes me want to puke. I don't discriminate between different companies. I buy a whole variety of consoles and I see these fights as pointless, immature things. Of course, people are stubborn, and if I said that I don't care about either side during the console war of the early 90s, both Nintendo AND Sega fanboys would probably shoot me for my opinion because I own both a SNES and a Sega Genesis and I like them equally. From my research they were really strict on which side you were on back then.
-
Oh yeah, Dreamcast, that was a cool system. As was Sega Genesis. Back when Sonic the Hedgehog had the dignity of his own console. Something I wish he still had. But it Mario seems to be the only mascot left these days. :cry2
-
Wait, wait, wait. Last I heard you never played a Genesis. Now that I got that out in the open. There are quite a few mascots for each console. Mario is probably the oldest. Then Sonic, back when Sega was in the hardware market. Sony used to have Crash Bandicoot and that died fast and now Sony is without a mascot. And the newest company mascot is my personal favorite, Microsoft's very own Master Chief from Halo. But yeah, the only existing real mascots are Mario who has been around since the beginning and the Master Chief who is quite current in gaming culture. Nintendo actually has quite a few mascots. There's of course Mario, then Link from the Legend of Zelda games, and my most favorite Nintendo icon, Samus Aran. Boy is she hot. :p
-
Before I hadn't, but I just bought one that my couson owned when he decided to clear out all his own stuff. I'm seeing that Sega Genesis really was a cool system now that I'm actually playing some older games on it.
I wouldn't refer to Samus and Link and as Nintendo mascots, really. Granted, they are sables of the Nintendo company, but there can only be one mascot at a time, and that job's taken.
-
Well... still... they were very popular. Zelda especially. I don't mean to start an argument here. I'm just saying...
-
I still hope to get a Playstation 3. I do not want Sony to give up videogaming. I enjoy some of the games they come out with. Covering all kinds of fields, in my opinion, is a very convenient way of selling video games. It offers more variety, and can appeal to more people.
I wouldn't call PS3 a rip-off just because it costs $600. Heck it costs even more to buy a good laptop, but people still buy them anyways. And yes, I do know that you can do more stuff on a laptop than a console, but my point is people are indeed willing to spend a lot of money for entertainment purposes.
I can see the PS3 having high sales, despite the high price on it. How I think it'll fair in the long run, I'm uncertain about that. It depends on if PS3 can live up to its reputation. I don't think price alone is a factor in how successful a console would be. I think what it really comes down to is how well it performs and how easy it is to handle and how successful the games are.
I do apologize if my opinion upset anyone.
-
I had read a recent newspaper article about the most recent console war. It contained a little argument between a Sony freak and a Nintendo freak. (Of course, who can expect those two kinds of people to get along anyways. :P:)
Now, aside from the expected back and forth flaming and bashing, it contained some rather interesting aspects. The Sony freak said that PS3 will prove itself in the long run. It is said that in the future Sony will produce a number of games that will take advantage of the SIXAXIS function. Nintendo went the opposite direction and brought out games that takes advantage of it's new functions. It even gives people who have never picked up a gaming controller an easy lesson in gaming, which is why it's called Wii, it's for everyone. With games like Wii Sports and Wario Ware Smooth Moves, it gives Nintendo an early boost in sales. Excite Truck makes the Wiimote the steering wheel. So it's quite the easy function in the end. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is currently the only game using the Nunchuck, but more are expected to be on the way.
There was a recent talk around here about the possibility of a Mario Kart Wii game. I say that if such a thing does happen, which I hope, we will be looking at a totally different control function. I predict these as the controls: Wiimote steers, A accelerates, B breaks, Z fires weapon and R handles tight turns. If there are still two drivers for each car around, L would be the only button left for switching. (A&B are on the Wiimote, while L, R and Z are on the Nunchuck. I have done more research and I now correct my mistake.) Note that I didn't mind the two drivers idea. It gave the simple advantage of having two weapons at once. It was always fun for me to fire a blue shell at the one in front then use the special mushroom to catch up whenever I was in trouble. (One secret of the game is that the better weapons become more of a possibility as you get further behind. In 8th place, lighting bolts and blue shells are abundant and banana pells and fake items are rare.)
I'm definately putting the Wii on my Christmas list. If I don't get it for Christmas, I've got $250 dollars tucked away in a secret hiding place that I'll use to buy one myself. :P:
-
I'm not arguing, Cyber. I'm just something out. Oh yeah, doubt that Zelda and such are popular.
Dark: You're over-looking the fact that most people already have appliances that do everything that the PS3 is said to do. People aren't going to fork over $600 when they already have all those capiblities in their homes. It was a waste of time and money for Sony. They have forgotten their place in this world with the PS. Its a gaming console. It should be nothing more.
-
WR, I was referring to myself starting the argument.
-
Well, then, I'm not starting one, either. B)
-
Dark: You're over-looking the fact that most people already have appliances that do everything that the PS3 is said to do. People aren't going to fork over $600 when they already have all those capiblities in their homes.
The big Plus for movie enthusiasts is that the PS3 will play Blu-Ray movies.
At this moment, a PS3 is actually cheaper ($650) than a Blu-Ray player ($999). This is one piece of credit I will give Sony, for providing somewhat more affordable access to breakthrough technology.
The counter argument is, of course, that prices for Blu-Ray players will drop to reasonable levels in a short time, leaving the PS3 overpriced once again, unless Sony follows the market trend of the Blu-Ray player.
In theory, the PS3 should cost More than your average Blu-Ray player because the PS3 is a Blu-Ray player And More. At this point, the PS3 is actually in a very good place in the Blu-Ray market, as it is breaking that economical rule, even if only for a short time. I don't think this will last, as Blu-Ray players are now forced to drop in price and increase in quality.
Overall, it seems that Sony will need to very Very careful with how it controls the price of its PS3 units as time passes.
-
I wasn't overlooking anything. I know there are appliances like that. But it's more convenient to make the game console do other things besides just playing games, in my opinion.
-
No, its not more conveniant. Not at all. In fact, it will be less conveniant if it breaks down, because there's that much more to lose on it if it breaks down. You'll risk losing not only game files, you can lose computer files, DVD files, and whatever else files, and you'll be forced to go back to all the *ahem* less conveniant separate appliances, one way or the other. That right there is why I'm never going to bother with one. That's a mess I'm not willing to deal with.
Don't even bother using the 'it has tons of memory space' argument. Once you start filling it up with everything it will allow you to save on it, that space will start to look a lot smaller before you know it.
-
WR, I wasn't trying to start an argument. All I was doing was stating my opinion. I believe that consoles with extra features are convenient, in their own way. But I am not saying they aren't, nor am I completely disagreeing with your opinion. I can see why you see the extra features as inconvenient.
-
Hey, I just tell it as it is. Conjoining things...bad idea. Do that, and when one thing breaks, several things break down all at once.
-
I gotta go with Playstation 3 for this one if I had 600 dollars too spend on that right now I would.
-
I found out something interesting on a news page. each of these PS3 consoles they sell they lose $200 to $300 per console. sounds like it cost a heavy amount of money to make them and selling them under the building cost.
talk about burning a hole in sony's pockets.
-
I don't believe it's entirely a bad thing. But I can see how it's not entirely a good thing either.
They lose $200 for each console sold? Hmm. Didn't know that.
-

You guys havin' fun going around and around in circles, Darkhououmon and Weirdraptor? :P:
I agree with both of you based on my experience. I bought a PS2 when it First came out (the 2nd day, actually). I was in love with the DVD player feature of it, since the PS2 was my first DVD player. However, as it was a 1st-generation PS2, it had its share of problems. Now, its DVD features are a bit unstable and it sometimes has trouble reading games or music CDs.
For many years, I really liked the multiple features in one, but when my PS2 decided to be less cooperative, it was a bit of a pain to not have a reliable DVD player. As a result, we just went out and bought a real DVD player, which was reasonably-priced by that time. In the end, both sides worked out very well. B)
-
First Generation PS2, eh? Yeah I recall, back when PS2 was newly released, hearing how they break down easily or something.
-
It was in the news when that happened. they was on purposly faulty, after a time the reading laser would break down. someone high up in Sony for PS 2 had the reading laser faultly. I wish I was kidding but it was on BBC news and on news papers tones of people in the UK was very very annoyed with Sony, the first damaging blow to them.
-
Being a Nintendo fanatic,, I favor the Wii.. :D
-
Oh I see...
I just talked to my brother and he said that if the Blue-Ray doesn't catch on, Sony is in big trouble.
-
Well, I do think its an altogether bad thing. There is a reason some things are constructed separately, and I'm a devout believer in conveniance. Its not conveniant to lose one thing, and lose everything else along with it. I will maintain that stance fanatically.
-
WR, we got the point already.
-
She keeps restating her side, I get to restate my side.
-
She keeps restating her side, I get to restate my side.
Darkhououmon appears to have agreed with your opinions, and stated that there are true points about what you believe, as well as what she believes. I don't think you and her need to continue this "Combining things together" conversation any further, WR. As Cyberlizard put it (maybe a little unkindly), we get the point. :P: Thanks. B)
I just talked to my brother and he said that if the Blue-Ray doesn't catch on, Sony is in big trouble.
This is probably true for the most part. Since Blu-ray games are not directly related to Blu-ray movies, however, I'll bet that the PS3 will still have a large draw of gamers who want the PS3 experience, whether or not Blu-ray movies win the format war.
-

Yeah I do agree with that.
-
Having recently been working in the retail of electronic goods, I can say that Sony are probably gonna shoot themselves in the foot yet AGAIN with their specialist media formats. Blu-Ray discs are gonna be great for capacity but they are gonna be a hell offa lot more expensive than their more generic rival format HD DVDs (I'm on about movies moreso than the games). I reckon HD DVDs are gonna be much more successful because more electronic companies will have their HD DVD players configed to play HD DVDs rather than Blu-Ray discs.
Sony seem to always do this with new technology. Look at music casette tapes (if anyone can remember that far back LOL :lol). Sony brought out the Mini Disc to combat tape casettes for music formats. It was a greater piece of technology but it flopped. Hardly anyone bought them coz they we more focused on the switch from tape to CD rather than to Mini Disc. Again, VHS tapes and Beta Max. Again, Sony made something that was technologically superior but still, no one was interested and VHS tapes excelled. Want more recent? PSP UMDs. More and more movie companies are pulling out of putting their films on UMDs because they are just far to unprofitable.
Sadly, Sony seem to invest tons of money into creating these unique formats for music, video and games but most of the time, because they tend to make them very specific to their own products. Some other electronic companies do take on Sony's mediums but they don't tend to last very long. There may be a quick boom in sales but it quickly dies out again. I reckon, in the next format fight of Blu-Ray Vs. HD DVDs...given what I've already said, I know where my bets will be placed
-

As much as I'd like to see Blu-Ray win the format war, as I have seen the specs for both and prefer the Blu-Ray format, the odds are not exactly in its favour. It is too early to declare a winner but I do see your point, Littlefoot! It seems the 'superior' format often gets the short end of the stick. :P:
-
Get off my back, if CyberLizard had just said it kindly, I wouldn't have said anything else.
What exactly is so special about the Blue-Ray, anyway? I'd like to see more specifics on this device. To a guy whose stingy with money, like me (unless its something I really, really, REALLY want), the Blue-Ray does not sound appealing at the moment.
-
What exactly is so special about the Blue-Ray, anyway?
Probably stores more data, but other than that, I'm not so sure myself.
-
Here are the detailed specs of Blu-ray. Yes this is wikipedia but these specs are accurate. :P:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc)
If you don't feel like reading it all, here's the basic idea:
Blu-ray discs hold more and can read faster than CDs or DVDs. In short, games can be made much more complex and movies can be higher-resolution (greater detail), as the discs can store so much more information and access it so much faster.
-

Ooo..that sounds cool.
-
Eh, it sounds alright. Since I know the market will give me no choice in the matter, I'll be perchasing one, eventually, but until I absolutely have to spend more money on a new machine, I'm sticking with my trusty DVD player.
I just got a Wii! Its awesome! And so it "The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess"!
-
Well, congrats on getting that Wii, WR. :) (BTW, do your arms hurt yet from playing it so much? I heard with before release complaints that it was going to be a problem.) :P:
Now, I had gotten to play a demo version of the PS3 today at the Wal*Mart where I work during my lunch hour, and I'll say this about it.
First off, the graphics are down-right amazing! The detail of it was so incredible. :wow
The controller had a nice feel for when you hold it. It was indeed lighter, but it felt rather comfortable on my hands before I played a game or two.
Now, here's the main problem. The majority of games that I tried out had me mainly using the new trigger buttons. I'm sad to report that those hurt my poor index finger. After I was done testing it, my finger was hurting for a good twenty minutes.
Now, one thing was that the associate in Electronics had to reset it first, because when I was about to play it for the first time, it was currently frozen. This was a normal problem that the TV they used always had, so I dismissed it. Now, the thing was that the associate had a difficult time resetting it. Having a touch feature for power is nice and all, but I found that it requires a quick touch to make it turn on. Otherwise, it will do a quick turn on then turn off on ya if you do it too long. The associate was rather upset with this. I probably would be too. -_-
I didn't get any problems with the games I played. (Motorcross and Resistance) However, I've heard that the main majority of PSOne and PS2 games end up having glitches when played on PS3. Worst thing was that Sony warned people about this and still shipped it out without fixing the problems.
Well that's my full opinion on the PS3. What do you guys think of it now? <_<
-
I don't really mind. The next generation of PS3 might have that problem solved.
-
Sheesh, just a demo version, and already problems are popping up with the PS3. <_< Out of curiousity, what game demos did you play?
Actually, no, my arms aren't sore. I was able to do it from a sitting position, where my arms were perfectly rested. I have to say, it felt almost like actually being there. You should really give it a try. Its the next major advancement in gaming.
-
How do you find the motion sensor's accuracy, WR? Do the games track your movement well? Do things happen sometimes that you don't intend? Basically, is the motion detection idea as good as it sounds and does it actually work well enough to makes the games fun? :wow
That was the biggest question in my mind when I heard of these consoles and motion detection. Would they actually be accurate enough for a gamer to really enjoy the experience, or would they spend time fighting with the controls.
-
The accuracy for the console is good, but you have to be accurate, too, because an aiming set-up, it can be as perfect as can be, but if its user can't hit the broadside of a barn, its not going to, either.
-
I have got the Nintendo Wii... today it a smash and tones of fun. I just did Wii sports and I had tones of fun on those games. wow they do take a bit out of ya lol.
I am very very happy to getting the Wii today :D
-
WR, the games I played were Resistance, MotorStorm and NBA Live 07.
They were good games to play if anything. However, despite the fact they were good games to play, I'm still not going to spend $600 on a gaming console.
So the Wii is that accurate, huh? I had a feeling. It makes me wonder how SSB: Brawl will work out. It indeed questions how attacks will work this time around. We may have to stop pushing that B button to use Special Attacks. There are quite a number of fans that are used to doing that. :^.^:
You know, come to think of it, that "controller will hurt your arm" deal did come from someone who was "out of shape" as it were. :P: So if it's a fact that you're in good shape, I guess it shouldn't've been a problem.
Gaming has always had the issue of making people "out of shape". If you ask me, it seems that Nintendo has finally found a way to get out of that area. After all, their goal is to make a gaming console that everyone will want to play, and thanks to this, they're closer to that goal than ever before. :^.^:
-
Just playing it for a fair bit yesturday I had sore muscle pains from it. This Wii do some real work out :p
-

Well, I read in an issue of Nintendo Power Magazine that a person who was in good shape said that it would most likely give you a work out.
From your reaction on it all, I'm guessing his theory was correct. :^.^:
-
yep, I enjoyed playing it. quiet alot of fun it is :D
-
Alright! Seems like others around here also got a Wii! I got one myself with The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, finished it too. Like you guys stated, the Wii is a lot of fun X3
-
I just finished "Twilight Princess" as well. What'd you think of it? No spoilers, not everyone here has been all of it yet.
-
Good to see that its lived up to the marketing--you really do play some games on the Wii in a different way, and get a workout at the same time. :P:
-
Well I got a hot tip of where one could be. The one who informed me was passing the store at closing time and saw two of them left. Here's hoping I get one when it opens tomorrow. :^.^:

Heheh! Well the entire adventure was epic! I loved it! :)

Hahah, yup! That's what I love about the Wii!

Good luck with that! The Nintendo Wii is a hot item this Christmas! Might be hard to get your paws on one.
-
In the UK a shop called the Gear Show. Talk about items that high tech and what would be a great seller and stuff putting things to the test. the final show had one last match up with a Blue ray DVD player and a Nintendo Wii in the UK. Wii won heads down with the three experts they brought in. all three saying Wii.
so it a hot chirstmas present :D
-
Darn! I didn't get one! :(
Oh well, there's always next time. -_-
-
I doubt my family will bother getting a Wii. Asked my brother, who is more of a Nintendo fan than me and even he's not sure if we'll ever get a Wii in this house.
-
You probably wouldn't be able to find one, anyway, because everyone and their grandma has already got one or preordered it, instead of the PS3, just as I predicted.
-
Well not everyone got a Wii. Many got PS3 as well. But considering that Wii was more abundant in stores (I think 20 per store, while PS3 had only 10), and was lower in price, it is pummelling PS3 to the ground in sales. It has over 1 million sales so far, I think, while PS3 has only 500,000 at least. This came as no surprise to me.
My parents probably wouldn't let a Wii in this house anyway, if Clint and I ever got the opportunity to buy one.
-
It would have pummeled it in sales, anyway. Sony really dropped the ball this time. By the time their prices lower and they have more available, the demand for PS3's will no longer even exist, as everyone will already have the far superior Wii. Oh yeah, Sony's going to be edged out of the gaming business this time around. About time, too.
Now, after years of being berated and teased for liking the "kiddie" Nintendo, I can rub this in the arrogant faces of those X-Box and PS fans wouldn't leave me alone.
-
I agree, Sony really dropped the ball this generation. Not only the PS3 has a really outrageous price for what you want to buy it for, but Sony is really bleeding a lot of money for each console sold. And I think I read somewhere the PS3 hasn't even sold 500,000 units yet, it's so short on supplies and full with bugs and defects the system isn't even getting any good reviews to start with. Plus, I read that Sony is considering in making a motion sensing controller similar to the Wii Remote, once again ripping off an idea from Nintendo. Not sure if this news is bogus or real, but it's out there; google is your friend.
In all honestly and in my opinion, I cannot picture the PS3 succeeding this generation, it's already losing exclusive titles to the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii that I cannot see the reason to even get a PS3 for now, it seems to be going downhill and being lost in the dust compared to the Nintendo Wii and Xbox 360 sales. Sony either needs to debuff their system or stick to software designs, they're bleeding money with the PS3 for now.
-
A friend of mine has given a comparasion of the two. Here's what he said about them.
PS3:
The PS3 is all Sony hype. Its NOT more powerful than the Xbox 360, infact, the GPU is actually WEAKER in the PS3 since the GPU has 24 pixel pipelines, 8 vertex shader pipelines. The Xbox 360's GPU has 48 Unified Shaders that can scale, meaning it can be 32 pixel pipelines, 8 vertex, 24 pixel, 24 vertex, and whatnot. The Cell is an architectural piece of trash and is extremely difficult to develop for (being in IT and computers since I was seven, I seen many processors and designs. Also, many developers agree, even John Carmack of ID and CliffyB of Epic, both very good and well known developers, called the processor a "pain in my ***". Its on the level of the Sega Saturn when it comes to development difficulty, which is what killed the Saturn). Its just one main PowerPC core and six to seven small, weak co-processors that have the power of a 500-700MHz equivalent of its main processor. So its not as "uber powerful" as Sony wants you to believe, its about as powerful as the Xbox 360's TriCore 3.2GHz PowerPC CPU.
The online service is just like the PS2s, nothing is centralised. Only thing they added was a web page based marketplace. Every game needs a login name. Sony wants to try to complete against Xbox Live, but it appears they definitely under delivered on that as its not near as good from what many developers and previewers say. I also heard it uses raw IP stacks (no ceneralised protocols) like the PS2 did, meaning the developer has to develop all the online play protocols, software, etc for it, making online development far more difficult. The online play is free, but you get what you pay for...
Also, Blu-Ray, and HD-DVD, have HORRIBLE seek times (or how fast the drive's laser can move back and forth to read the data) so it keeps with Sony's bad load time repetition. Infact, Oblivion loads more than two times slower than it does on Xbox 360 from what's been said. This is why Microsoft didn't use HD-DVD (infact, MS surveyed many developers and asked if they wanted more space or better seek time, vast majority wanted better seek time.)
The controller is not unique at all, it uses a 10 year old tilt technology that flopped miserably on PC and third party controllers. It was a poor attempt to stab at the Nintendo Wii. All they did is take the same controller design they been using for over 10 years (and its age really, really shows) and take out the rumble motors and replace them with basic digital tilt sensors.
Backwards compatibility is one strong point, since unlike the Xbox 360, they can easily use hardware-based backwards compatibility. Microsoft had to use an emulator and its became well, a pain in the *** for MS to get all the games working. So definitely expect PS3's backwards compatibility to be much better. But I heard there's also problems with the backwards computability on the PS3 as well, from what some Japanese early-adopters are finding out, such as random glitches, sounds issues, graphical issues, random freezes, even delayed button recognition, and whatnot. Not sure what games will be affected until it launches here in North America, though.
Also, the PS3's launch lineup is weak. The best game on it is Resistance: Fall of Man which does look like it will be good. But other than that, 80% of them are multiplatform games. Also, quite abit of games have been delayed as well, probity due to difficulty of development.
Also, the price point of $600 is painful, and I don't see how its worth that much...
I hate what Sony has done this generation, did nothing but lie constantly and bash the Xbox 360 like no tomorrow. Sony has gone to pretty low standards, like releasing false comparison charts, making false claims, done allot of bashing, and whatnot. What this shows to me is that Sony is afraid of their competition, especially since they know the Xbox 360 threatens to take their leadership away.
I think the PS3 will have some great games of course but its not what Sony is hyping it to be. I hate to be bashing it so much but I hate how Sony has gone with this and lied to make it look better than it is, and deceived people into believing this stuff.
Wii:
Wii is definitely a interesting concept, the controller is the biggest selling point and the most interesting aspect. I think it will play very well with some games (especially Nintendo games) but not work so well with several other games.
The Wii is very underpowered compared to the rest though. It only has a 750MHz single core PowerPC processor and a 250MHz 4 pixel pipeline GPU (compared to PS3's 550MHz 24 pixel pipeline GPU and Xbox 360's 500MHz 48 Unified Shadier GPU), making it only about as powerful as the original Xbox was.
But that wasn't Nintendo's focus on the system, the focus was the control and the games, which Nintendo seems to be delivering well on the Wii. Games like Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Zelda: Twilight Princess, and whatnot are all very good games.
It, like all the rest, will have a marketplace like system, but its primarily for Nintendo's Virtual Console service. The online service is not known too much yet since most games won't be having online play on the Wii until 2007.
But the Wii is looking like a really good contender, and defently shows a unique move from Nintendo with the "Wiimote" controller.
Understand fully that his opinons weren't based on anything within the realm of opinion, unless otherwise indicated. :^.^:
I'm not giving up on the Wii yet! I've got other places to try. I heard that a certian store is getting them on Sunday. In fact, all of that store within my home state are getting them on that day. So that helps. :^.^:
Of course, it being so close to Christmas, I'm going to have to set up camp at least a day early in front of the store just to have the best chance of getting one. :p
-
I don't think PS3 will be the last system Sony will produce. In fact I see these mistakes they made with this system will be a lesson for them for when they create PS4. After all, you learn more and gain more from your mistakes than your succeeds.
Ah, yeah I heard some people call Nintendo "kiddie" because of it's mostly E-rated games. But I see it more of a family-oriented console than PS and X-Box. Doesn't mean it's kiddish.
-
If they don't succeed with the PS3, there won't be a PS4, because the PS will have officially become a liability.
Why did you just defend the Gamcube? I thought you hated the GC as much as I dispice the PS. I'm curious, not mean here.
-
Oh, sorry if I gave you that impression. I don't hate Gamecube. I don't play on it as often as the PS2, but I still enjoy playing games on it.
-
Woops. Sorry.
I have to admit, myself, I do like some PS games, though. "Devil May Cry" and "Devil May Cry 3" being tops on that list. Ijust hope DMC4 doesn't follow DMC2's example.
-
Not necessarily continuing with this poll but just wanted to know how the PS3 is selling over in the States (and other countries besides). The PS3 went on sale yesterday (23/3/07) and the only system that was available was the 60GB one. Apparently, Europe was not due to receive PS3s with different sized hard drives. There's supposed to be a 40GB and an 80GB supposedly but I don't know how true that it. The asking price dipped from £550 ish to £425 (approx $834/628 Euros) for just the console.
The major hype about the PS3 has been its versitility in connecting to other medium via cable, wireless or bluetooth (PSP, cameras, mobiles/cell phones etc) and, of course, the biggest bragging right that it is probably one of the first Blu-Ray disc players the UK has seen.
I heard that the PS3 didn't launch too well in the States. How true is that? I work in a store that sold PS3 and (despite being a fairly small town) we hardly had a mad crush for our stock. We sold 3 pre-sold consoles despite hvaing about 7 on hand. Most likely the biggest crush was up in the capitial and other major cities of the country but unlike the 360 and Wii, I haven't heard much of the stupidly long lengths of queues for these machines. I can't say it been much of a successful launch on this end. Just wondering if it were the same sitch else where in the world.
Oh...and for the record...I DID end up getting a Wii (and I love it! :^.^: )
-
PS3 for sure. The wii is a fad machine. No diffrent than the power glove or the dance pad twister thing. The absolute only diffrence this time is nintendo made a entire game system in to a flash in the pan fad machine. I strongly feel that this is nintendos last ditch effort to make alot of money before they go under.
If you all knew me a bit better youd know im rarely wrong on these predictions when it comes to the game industry. But lets look at nintendos recent history from super nes on up.
Super nes was a great system the first of the game consols capable of 3d graphics soon followed by sony ps1 another great game consol this was easly the golden age of game consols. Sony and nintendo both had the market tied down tightly. This is also the time that sega started to die off. End of the era of great side scrolling 2d graphic games like defender also the decline of the video arcade started.
N64 nintendos first mistake. Sony ps1 sales still going strong with n64s release their sales only went up and many a developer junped ship from nintendo do to sony ps1s ease of development. They were not limited to for example 256k to a few megs of memory that cartrages allowed for (pre large storage flash memory. cds 650 mb n64 cartrage 32 megs. Opps nintendo should have done as all the critics said and made that move to cd/dvd rom media. even sony ps1 is out selling you.
Sony sees the future is in dvd media and starts workign on ps2 fast to get it out on market. Nintendo releases game cube soon after but like they anounced it uses a special dvd media a half sized disk and the system will not play dvd movies bad move. More game developers jump ship but a few other join up as well. These few think that hey we can keep out games from being distributed online. They were wrong of corse. Most soon jump ship a few are traped by contract
Sony ps2 sales go sky high. Many develops flock to it even though its a little harder to program for. They simply put can debug their games faster. Can offer online play etc. They can even offer remote upgrades by storing them on a memory card.
Nintendo all system sales still going down.
PS3 comes out xbox 360 etc come out both play movies both offer fast to market game media thats cheap to press.
Nintendo pulls a fast one (in more ways than 1) they make a system that is all gimic and somethign that will die a fast fad like death. Cute idea baddly implimented. See varioud reports on the controls flying apart etc. Sales currently on rise do to media hype and involvement.
I did not cover hand helds in the above. But once you figure in the psp and its movie play back abiities and the fact many a dvd is released on psp disk at the same time and in a few cases in the same packaging you know its a winning choice. while nintendo has the ds with a yep cartrage based system. I think you can see why i beleive this may very well be the last days of nintendo.
-
The PS3 sold out everywhere on launch day, but on the other hand Sony came extremely short in supplies. Currently the system isn't moving so well, there are people saying they see PS3s sitting on the shelves while the Nintendo Wii is selling like hotcakes.
The Nintendo Wii on the other hand is being gobbled up the minute it's on the shelves, everywhere you try to go they're sold out and you'll be lucky to find even one. I got a Nintendo Wii since launch and I love it, never regret getting one.
And novaflare, I disagree with your post about these being Nintendo's last days. They know to make great profit with their systems. N64 may not have been groundbreaking, but it made a lot of money. But I do agree the N64 being a weak point in Nintendo's history.
The Nintendo Gamecube sold fairly well and made a lot more money than the Xbox and PS2. It took a while for the PS2 to turn from money loss into profit and Microsoft was losing money with each Xbox sold until the last years of the generation.
The Nintendo DS is DOMINATING the handheld market, outselling the PSP by a landslide and raking in the big bucks.
As for the Nintendo Wii, like I said, they're selling like hotcakes the minute they hit the shelves, and its future looks very promising. The PS3 is losing exclusives and they don't seem to be selling well with the $600 pricetag, running a dead last in the current gen's console race. Its sells will pick up of course, but like the PS2 Sony will lose money with each console sold until it sells a huge amount for it to turn profits while Nintendo rakes in heavy profit since day 1.
The Wii's remotes flying around are the gamers' fault, they insist on doing exagerated moves when it's simple motions. And they made the right choice leaving out the movie playing features, I have a computer and a DVD player for that. Why increase its price just to include a DVD player in it? I buy videogame consoles for games, not to watch movies on them.
With all that said and done, Nintendo isn't going anywhere and these are DEFINETLY not its last days. And Nintendo is not going under, in fact they're nowhere near being finished, I'd say they're in the correct road and should stay that way. They're going to be around for a long time.
-
No offense, but I think you're way wrong about Nintendo, nova. PS3 is the one who has been having trouble. From what I heard, most of the PS3's games so far have done real badly, the graphics aren't great, and get this...some of them seem to catch on fire if played for a certain time. Wii on the other hand has been doing rather well. Agreeing with Keni's statement, I could not find one Wii, but plenty of PS3's. Besides, Nintendo has done rather well with its games. (Most of the Mario games still go strong) I don't know where you got the idea that Nintendo would be going down the tube. Let's not forget if it wasn't for Nintendo, the states probably would have never seen video games, ever. (They said the VG trend was dying down until Super Mario Brothers was realeased for the Nintendo in America) Forgive me if I sounded a bit harsh, I am a Nintendo fan, and I just find it hard to believe Nintendo is done for, considering the games that are on the way like Super Smash Brothers Brawl...that will bring in a big herd of gamers. I'm not saying PS3 is doomed, but it isn't doing too hot. Plus, I heard Squre-Enix wanted to try bring some of their games to the Wii because they liked it so much, so maybe a future Final Fantasy title or Kingdom Hearts title will be for it.
Okay, okay, so Nintendo didn't have online play nor did it have the best graphics, but it was a lot more fun than most games. Games aren't just judged by graphics you know.
Again, if sound a bit harsh I apologize, but you've just experenced the wrath of an angry Nintendo fan. XD

First none taken.
To me nintendo wii looks like smell like and sounds like a media hype success to me. Look at the silly conrolers they put out before. Like that pad thing you ran on and danced on. Those things sold like mad millions sold. In the end you seen them at yardsales or in the trash months later. This time they have taken the concept of it to a new level. The entire system is based on the idea of getting a work out playing a game. Personally when i sit down to play a game i want to basically relax and enjoy the game. When i want to get a work out i go out for a nice 20 to 40 mile bike ride.
If wii is still going strong in a year to 18 months time then ill say ok i was wrong. But in till that time period is up ill stick to my guns on this. Ive watched to many nintendo product get media hype sales they are fun for a while then poof gone. Right now its something new and diffrent nintendo tossed it on to the market with little notice got peoples intrest up etc.
Now they need to keep makign it more intresting and they have time and time again had a hard time doing that.
Personally i stopped with consol gamign after trhe ps2 and went to online gaming. The finale fantasy games turned to trash after ff7. And they had no really epic rpgs after it ither. Wild arms was awesome breath of fire again great dozens apon dozens of others with great stories. Then ps2 hits and its sports sports and more sport toss in some racing here and there some lame fighting game or 3 toss in a few play the role of a murderer games and call it a day.
Regardless of how much we would like these are the twilight years of gameing only consols. Looks at microsofts latest offering the 360 does it also have the ability to browse the web? As does ps3 ?
How much longer pure gaming consols have is any ones guess realy. It will be a shame when consols are a thing of the past. Simply put mhz for mhz mg of ram for meg of ram consols will always out perform computers game for game. Simply put the consol has no os over head beyond loadign the cd wich has a os of sorts on it as well.
The only games i play on computer are online and when i still bothered i had like 200 across 3 consols. 90% rpg 8% action adventure last 1% was a fighting game or 2.
-
What you say is understandable, gaming has gotten a bit weak recently, I've been considering in quitting gaming myself until I caught wind of the Nintendo Wii and its capabilities and potential. But even so there are still some great titles coming out. And personally I enjoyed the Final Fantasy games after FF7, to tell you the truth I find FF7 a way overrated game. Don't get me wrong, it's a great RPG but I don't think it deserves this much praise it has IMO.
As for the Nintendo Wii being a "work out" system, that's a WAY exagerated claim. The games I have for the Wii so far CAN be played sitting down, it's just little flicks of the wrists. Granted, some games are required to be played standing up like some sports in Wii Sports, but the system does not need exessive movements. I've seen sneak peeks of coming soon games for the Wii, they show a lot of promise with different and unique control schemes for the Wii Remote.
I also wonder how long these consoles will remain "gaming" consoles, with the new systems implementing online access and media access, I'm worried the future consoles will turn into another computer with all these extras. IMO keep them as simple as gaming consoles, they don't really need all these extra belts and whistles to increase their price tags and turn us off.
-
Yeah, I agree with Keni. Not a lot of games have been doing great in the recent years, and I had no idea you hated the FF games after 7 (I didn't really like 8 and 9 was a bit too hard), nova. (Shrugs) Oh, well. Nowadays there are very few games that stand out. Back in the day mostly every game that came out was amazing, but now things have gone down hill. Moving back to the Wii, not all of the games are standing up, some can be played sitting down. There is a racing game which you told the Wii a certain way and requires very little movment. Some games try to take full advantage of the Wii while others don't. I think Zelda: TP could be played sitting down. I completely understand where you're coming from, nova.
-
I think nova may be a little bitter more than anything over something, his posts are more rants than valid arguments, actually. He has yet to actually give us a single shred of real evidence that he can show to us with his claims about Nintendo. No offense, but I can't take your stance seriously here, nova.
I've been playing the Wii for months and I have yet to even begin to grow bored with it. And most of people in my social circle have the same stance. Its not just a media hype machine. Its a genuinly fun console to play with. Of course, only someone willing to give it a chance would know that, now wouldn't they? :p
-
The thing that sucks is like Keni said Wii is so hard to find. I don't even have one, but I've tried it and it is cool. :cry Cruse you Littlefoot1616 and Keni for owning one!!! XD (I'm only playing with you guys)
-

Mostly im going by personal experiance and gut feeling and a little of nintendos fadish history. They also had some very inovative stuff to like the super game boy to play game boy games on the super ness. I had about 30 action adventure and rpg games for game boy all but one rarely played game worked great on it. I sold my gb once i got that thing. I loved playing games like metroid on it omg so much fun. only 16 colors but man so much better than green and gray heheh. They failed misrably on delivering other super nes add ons. They had memory expansions planned a hard drive add on and tons of other stuff planed for it. But instead they made the n64. Even with the draw backs or the cartrage based system it held loads of promise nintendo failed to deliver on. They got so cought up in the 3d aspects and how to show them off they hurt the games playability. Zelda 64 for example. In some places it was crazy hard just to change screens because the camera would flip around when you changed screens. So right after loading youd run right back through the zone border reloading the one previously.
Again possability for some amazing add ons again failed to deliver on that potential. I would love to be proved wrong with the wii it has tons of potential if they work it right it could be a great system. Hopefully unlike in the past they can deliver on that potential.
Sony has followed suit as well with the ps2 promised a hard drive and it does not exist not the way they intended. And the slim line ps2 what a idiotic move. It is now obvious even before they released ps3 that it is a end of life product.
The internet playable games for the ps2 numbered in the what a dozen maybe 15?
PS3 bleh over priced under powered computer want to be.Wii could turn out to be a huge success and i hope it is im just leary of nintendo and their past.
I think the reason we see internet conectivity on consols like the ps3 is they are afraid computers will run them out of buissness but they will not. They all need to figure this out or their shooting thm self in their feet.
As for buying wii if i get a good full time(ish job) i may give it a go. And that make you me thing looks like it could be alot of fun? Imm wondering how many hoices are realy in there and how close you can get to making a self portrait. I know it is possible to get acurate results ive seen sketch artist police software in action pretty amazing. That was a fair number of years ago when they demoed it at a local library. They had alot of people there checking it out and some were not your plain jane/jhon type of face. The officer working with it hit the nail on the head more times than you could count. So yeh i see its potential.

Hm, I never had a problem with Zelda 64 by what you said O.o
Aside from the supposed Nintendo system with the help of Sony from which the Playstation originated from after the plan was canned, I don't know much of N64's history aside from the planned Commodore 64 add-on that was canned, so I can't say much about the N64's development background.
Me thing? Oh, you mean the Mii Channel for the Nintendo Wii, right? Yeah, it's a pretty neat feature where you create an avatar of your own. It's pretty fun, up to the point where Wii owners have made Miis from popular icons like Peter Griffin and Michael Jackson (They look incredibly similar might I add). You can choose mouths, ears, nose, eyebrows, eyes, facial hairs, basically everything to customize the Mii's face, adjust their position and size. The face customization is pretty broad. The only downside is that for now it's just face customization.

Yeh me and my one brother always had troubles with it while my mom did not nor did my other 2 brothers. I think its because me and my one brother are more of technical players really concise movemnts etc. Very little in way of stoping just a smooth flow from on thing to the next. So we would tend to move the control to go foward hold as we planned to keep going. So when cam angle moved it made us walk right back in.
Heres a silly gripe with post ps1 consols. I hated not haveing large concise manuals. I can not stand thse little 20 pagers they have now hehe. Silly dvd cases just dont got the room for big nice manuals. I shudder to think what the ps3 wii 360 etc have lol
Corse its worse with computer games. Last pc game i bought had no darn printed manual only a pdf.....
I dont know i got a interview this week if i get the job maybe ill snag me a wii. Its a shocker but ive seen them in the stores here and no danger of not haveing a easy time getting one. Thats been a few weeks ago though so hard to say now.

I had to go online for my Wii, and have never regreted getting it. :)
The idea behind Nintendo Wii is having fun with a game, which is what gamers really want these days. The controls are easy because they are natural movement for the game you play.
If you know how to throw a ball, swing a racket, or even throw a punch, this should come naturally to you. It is the kind of stuff people never get bored with. Ever seen someone get bored of regular sports? No. You only see them get worn out or run out of time to play.
That's all Nintendo decided to do. Offer a controller that's nothing more than natural movement. And as of now, they're doing incredibly well with it. :^.^:
-
I think what this all boils down to "personal opinion". I've had my Wii since February and I've only got a couple of games for it but that what I reckon makes it so appealing. The concept and gameplay of the system. OK, fair enough the whole swinging of the Remote can seem a little gimicky but it makes a nice change to actually get a bit of physical movement out of a console. On that note, PS3 have ALSO implimented their own take on the Wii remotes' technology. Use of gyro-technology (or whatever techno-babble they named it). Twisting and turned the controller to steer, point/aim etc.
The whole, "integrating work and play" thing is a concept that was supposed to be apparent. The idea of finally getting up out of your seat and getting more physically involved (for some people who manage to destroy the room they're playing in, maybe not TOO physically involved LOL :P: ). The dance mats where brought about by arcade machines. It was only once they were such a hit in arcades that the games and hardware started moving to home consoles.
For me, it's the games that matter more so than the processing power of the machine or it's hard drive space. I'm not strictly loyal to a particular name coz there are so many games that span all current gen consoles. As I've said before, I will probably end up getting a PS3 but I'm waiting for the games that I want. EVeryone's got their preferences.
Both consoles have their pros and cons. Waht seems to be overlooked is the idea that Sony is a multimedia technological supplier. It deals with TVs, audio players, stereos, entertainment systems, DVD-players so with the PS3, they've looked to implimenting the newest technology available into their console to appeal to a growing market coz we all know Blu-Ray discs and HD DVDs are the new media format for video and are fast approaching. Given a number of years, DVDs will fizzle out like the VHS. There are reminents around, granted, but it's no longer mainstream. The only think that shot up the pricetag for the PS3 was the inclusion of the Blu-Ray player. Sony are appealing to a much wider target audience.
Nintendo on the other hand are strictly for the games and the gamer's market. Their target audience is a lot more defined and "smaller" (for want of a better word). Hence the reason why neither the Gamecube NOR the Wii had dvd-players included. What's a gamer want with DVD player? If the gamer was ALSO interested in movies then by all means; consider a DVD player. I have a PS2 but I dont tend to use it as a DVD player. I'd prefer to use an actual DVD player than my console.
The reason why I reanimated this topic coz I wanted to see the responses now that all three next-gen consoles have been unleashed. But it appears that the major player in all this really is nothing more than personal preference. Maybe I was looking for a deeper motive but that's all it seems like from what's been said so far (no personal digs at anyone ;) ). Interesting to see people's responses.

The Wii rocks! It is probably the most advanced video game system on the market.
The PS3 overheats rapidly, costs way too much, and has to compete with two very powerful game consoles.

So, which one are you going for?
pokeplayer984 i think the nintendo wii go first then playstation 3 goes second
-
I put my vote on "both." The only, and I repeat, ONLY, reason I included the PlayStation 3 is that my PlayStation 1 is not working right anymore. And this isn't even counting finances....
-
Littefoot1616, you've made the most sense out of any else here.
PS3 advertement: "And it comes with DVD player!"
Me: But I already hav a DVD player, and a Hybrid DVD Player/VHS Player back home."
PS3A: "Uh...well, its also a computer."
Me: I already have a desktop computer and a laptop."
PS3A: Well, it has new games.
Me: They all suck thus far this time around.
PS3A: You can play music on it!
Me: I have a CD player at home and in my truck...
PS3A: Well, damn! Did we include all this stuff too late when most people would already have all the above or what?!
-
I don't really have an opinion since I've never played either of them. I got both a Nintendo wii and a ps3 from my aunt, but I returned them both. I'm not too much of a gamer and I bought a bunch of computer parts with the money I got from returning them. Gaming systems just make you want to spend more and more money. You're spending $50 and $60 every time you go to walmart if you have one of those systems. It's just not worth it to me when you can get 1gb DDR ram for only $25 and a 320GB external hard drive for less than the price of 2 games.
I did like the PS3 more though cuz I got more money from it when I returned it. :^.^:
-
Wow, I'd be pissed if I was your aunt.

Nice, generalized statement. Got anything to back it up? Cause I've got plenty to refute it.

No, this just applies to me. I don't have a lot of self control when it comes to spending money, especially if it's a game. At least, that's what used to happen when I got a new game system. Before ya know it, I've spent over $1000 for stupid games that just go obsolete or get scratched in 2 years. It would be one thing if they lasted a while, but it really sucks how fast everything game related becomes obsolete. <_<

I call her for the receipt every time she gets me a game system. I tell her I don't want that sort of thing, but she buys me them anyways. I think it's because she doesn't know enough about computers to buy a computer thing for me and she doesn't want to just give me money.
-
I voted for the PS3. I played some games on it with a friend of mine. I haven¥t got one yet, but he has. And it was amazing. Special the game Burnout Paradise and Call of Duty 4

I have a LOT of old 10+ year-old SNES and NES games that are still in working order today. I don't consider them obsolete at all. The technology and graphics in them may be dated, but timeless classics like Star Fox, Super Metroid, or Super Mario Bros. really stick. I still play the original Star Fox today, and I enjoy every moment of it. All of my 5+year old GameCube stuff (except for the GameCube itself, which isn't in 100% working order, but it still runs games) still works today. The CDs still work for the system. I don't know where you come from when you say game systems go obsolete so fast like that. Isn't that cell phones and computers?

Best thing I've read in this thread. :D  Really, the next consumer thing is a phone that can do everything as well....seriously...
-
Exactly, Petrie. Oy, I'm perfectly happy with an appliance that just does the functions of its namesake. All these dopes who keep fallling for the "IT-does-it-all" promises are going to get hit hard when their machine breaks down they lose their DVD Player/CD Player/Radio/Computer/Shaver/Leg Waxxer/Phone/TV/Game Console/Drink Dispenser/Dish Washer/clothes Washer/Clothes Dryer/Gun/Home Security System/Drum Set/Keyboard/Car/Bed/House/Garage breaks down and they lose all the above in one fatal stroke. All electronics go obsolete very fast. It's just not worth it to me. I'm only into computers because I have to be for my job. I'm not going to intentionally get something I know is going to cost me a lot of money (like a game system). Buy hey, at least computers are upgradeable. Maybe when game systems become more like computers I'll like them more. As for now, a game system is not a necessity so I don't think it's a good idea for me to put myself into that kind of situation. If everything was cheaper, I'd probably like it more. I mean, god. If a new movie costs $19, then why does a new game cost freaking $60? It's gotta cost more to create a movie than a game. How stupid is that? Games should be like $10-$20. No more.
-

Buying video games, i find, is more cheaper then buying movies. If i buy a $20 movie, it will keep me occupied for about 2 hours, then i'll put the movie away and probably never watch for a long time. Now lets compare it to the game Oblivion i bought for the Xbox 360 for $60 bucks. I've played that game for over 100 hours and i still have plenty to do in the game. I would have to spend $500 in movies that are 2 hours long and watch each movie twice to spend as much time as i have on Oblivion. The reason why movies are priced at $20 is because no one would want to buy them if they were $60, i know i wouldn't.
just go obsolete
I agree with Manny on the matters with games becoming obsolete. I still think the older games like Super Metroid are better then most current games.
or get scratched in 2 years
I've only had 2 games that have gotten broken ever and one was beacuse it fell out of my bag and into the box of my dad's truck during summer holidays. I found the game 2 months later.
As for my choice between the PS3 and the Wii, i would pick the Wii hands down, i've always been a nintendo fan and i don't think i'll pick any console over nintendo's, though i do like the Xbox 360 as well.

Although a video game can generally keep you occupied longer than a movie can (unless it sucks of course), it still doesn't cost them any more to make the disks on a game than a dvd movie and it costs them less to make the game itself. Think about it. It doesn't matter how long it'll keep you occupied to them, they just want as many customers as possible. I don't care if the game keeps you entertained for a month, they still shouldn't be so darned expensive! :bang Then maybe we all could feel okay playing games, but no. They're so greedy that they want to make 60 million off the game. They wouldn't be happy with 30-40million, no. Those greedy......
-
How much does it cost to hire a game development team and everything needed to produce an "average" game as compared to a movie cast and everything to make an "average" movie? There are plenty of factors besides the ones landbeforetimelover is brining out, such as if more (or less...) games are being released than movies, if they need to charge more money off of games to overcome console production costs and other stuff, etc. Does anybody here remember the days when a SNES game was $80? $80!?
-
I could see paying a lot for a cartrage game. After all, it cost more to make all that plastic and metal than just a stupid flimsy breakable piece of thin plastic called a disk.
-
Yep, Sure do, Manny.
The cost of developing a cartridge is somewhere in the realm of $10...compared to the cost of a CD or DVD, which is far less than $0.25 these days. No wonder cartridge-based games were so expensive. Most I ever spent on a cartridge game was for Super Mario RPG for the SNES...over $85, soon after its release.
-
landbeforetimelover, they do have to make a profit. The cost of the disk, itself, is not the only factor. They spend a lot of money making the games, themselves, the cost of the disk just as a disk, itself, is not a notable factor. Its making back themoney they spent while in production of the game, itself, and it'd appreciate if you cut the attitude, landbeforetimelover. You constant coming down hard on games in every remark you make is getting old fast. Just so you know: No, movies are not more expensive than video games to make. Its more on a project to project basis.
Not to mention that DVDs can afford to be less expensive. They're the video release of something that was already displayed publically for a while. A lot of the time, the filmmakers get their money made back before the video release. Video games only have a video release. The store shelves are the only place they will make money.

I chose the Wii for two main reasons.
1. The price for the PS3 was REDICULOUS!!!!!!!!!!! There was no way I could spend $500 - $600 just to get that one system. Now, if it included games with a package or something for the same price, then I would have gotten it. However, the Wii was at the reasonable price of $250, so I leaned towards that.
2. I looked at the launch titles for both games, and I felt more excited for Zelda, Wii Sports, and Red Steel. Don't get me wrong though, Resistance Fall of Man is a great game, but that would have been the only reason why I would get the PS3. Also, I looked at future releases and found games like Metroid Prime 3, Super Mario Galaxy, and of course, Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I was anticipating the Wii games more than the PS3 games.
-
To be fair, comparing a PS3 to a Wii is comparing apples and oranges. They are for very different audiences, for very different purposes. I own both and I enjoy both, for different reasons. While my setup at home doesn't let me fully get the PS3 'experience' (that's more what the PS3 is gearing towards - the overall experience), I do see what it's trying to do.
For the most part, I'd say it's doing it quite well, though the PS3's serious downfall so far has been the lack of games produced for it. The EB Games shelf in the store closest to me has only 2 shelves dedicated to PS3 games, off in a little corner. The Wii takes up a good 1/4 of the right-hand wall. Compared to the Wii though, is the *quantity* of variety of games much different?
Here's why I question it: many people who are "anti-PS3" see these two aspects of it as deterrants:
1) It's too expensive (which is true, it is expensive).
2) There aren't any good games for it.
Compared to the PS3...does the Wii have that many "good" games? Of course, that *entirely* depends on what you consider to be a "good" game. But what are the most popular Wii games (in no particular order)?
1) Wii Sports
2) Wii Play?
3) Smash Bros. Brawl
4) maybe mario Galaxy?
5) Zelda (which is also on Gamecube)
6) Mario Kart, when it's released internationally
Okay, there are a few well-known Wii games. Let's look at what are typically considered "good" PS3 games (aka. the most popular):
1) Dynasty Warriors 6
2) Gran Turismo 5: Prologue
3) Rock Band
4) Call of Duty 4
5) Devil May Cry 4
6) Assassin's Creed
There's 6 games for both systems for us to look at. Now, let's look at what else is available on both systems:
Wii: the majority of games are either
Mini-game/party games (and LOTS of them!)
sports games
(basically, games that promote casual fun among a group of players)
PS3: the majority of games are
Shooters
action/killing-things games
Racing games
(basically, games that can potentially look very pretty and be very immersive with a high-end home theatre system)
Bottom line:
The Wii is primarily geared towards good casual fun, typically in a group setting, though the potential is there for solo gamers. To be fair though, not many Wii games have much longevity as solo games.
The PS3 is primarily focused on creating a gaming *experience* for one or two players, perhaps more over an online/LAN game. The PS3 is for those people who prefer watching movies in the theatre because of the experience. If you don't get that *feeling* from watching movies in a theatre or an amazing home-theatre system over a "normal" TV at home, you probably won't see the "intended" appeal of the PS3, either. Again, to be fair, a number of PS3 games do suffer from lack of content (namely, many of the games are quite short).
As further proof of the fact that the PS3 is all about the immersive experience, here's a little "case study":
How many of you have ever played or seen Dynasty Warriors 6, Burnout Paradise, or other PS3 game with small text? How many of you have tried to read this text on a standard-definition TV? Yeah...it's almost impossible. :lol
A PS3 almost Requires a high-def TV in order to be fully playable. Some elements of the game (text, map details, etc.) are literally impossible to see on a standard TV. Sad but true.
A more complex discussion is PS3 vs. X-box 360 but we can leave that for another topic.
(btw, I don't have a 360 :p)
Any thoughts?
-
Good points raised Action but again, I'd say it's all subjective. It's all down to personal taste. I know for sure that there are games for both consoles that I love playing. In terms of hard facts, apparently (according to Gamespot.com) the Wii outsold the PS3 by 4:1 at the end of the last calendar year. I've still heard people on street shunning the Wii as a "kiddie" console and I doubt this is a trait any Nintendo machine will ever shake off. But this is where I think Nintendo are smart by, not necessarily proving them right (coz there are a few adult orientated games out for Wii) but they are playing on the "kiddie" concept by making it more appealing to families. Hence, the key to its success.
Don't get me wrong, I've got a PS3 and I love the games I've got for it! I love the hi-def graphics and complexity of what you see on screen (not that I've gone for the whole hi-def experience...but maybe one day :^.^: ). The Wii is no match for the PS3's graphical processing power from a physical point of view and the results of what it can produce are stunning. And it's online play is great fun.
Still, as previously stated, it's all subjective I reckon. I personally pick out a console of the games that it promises rather than its graphical capabilities. I don't own a 360 but that doesn't mean I won't play one. The only thing that prevents me from getting one is that the games don't really appeal to me (bar a few exceptions, BioShock for one).
-
i have a wii and it bore's the hell out of me its just way to easy, and the ps3 is way to pricey so the only one left which for some reason an't here <_< is the 360, i got one and i play it all the time :^.^:
-
There is one distinct problem with the PS3 when you consider its true purpose.
The PS3 is considered basically, an entertainment center all-in-one. It's advertised to be a DVD/Blu-ray player, as well as being able to network to a media server for movies/music/pictures, etc. and of course, play video games.
Two problems with this:
1) NOISE!
Anybody who has ever been around a PS3 after it's been running for more than a few minutes knows that this is a considerable issue. A ps3, whether it's playing games, watching movies or just sitting there on the main menu, runs very loudly in order to keep itself cool. The problem is, this excessive noise is a severe issue in an entertainment setup. A quiet scene in a movie will potentially be drowned out by the PS3's fan. If you're forced to keep the volume low when watching movies (as I am) it can be an issue for most of the movie. The fan noise detracts from the movie being played, in short.
Of course, one option is to move the system into another room or in a cabinet, but the system generates so much heat that it needs ventilation. A small or closed cabinet is out of the question. The alternative? Another room, which requires a lot of cables (which gets expensive and introduces EMI noise and signal degradation, not to mention the challenge of hiding wires). It also makes operating the system more unwieldly, especially if the system is moved out of range of the wireless controller (which obviously can't be done or you're completely stuck :p).
2) Wear and tear on the Blu-ray drive
Games don't typically leave the disc spinning and the drive working for long periods of time on-end. Playing movies, however, is a constant stress on the blu-ray drive (this was also an issue with the PS2). In short - playing movies on your PS3 will potentially shorten the system's lifespan due to increased chance of a drive failure.
The PS3 is best-suited to high-end entertainment systems which can perform at higher volumes. The problem is, if you have a high-end entertainment system, you can probably afford (and would want) a dedicated blu-ray player, so.... :p
(then again, you don't need a high-end system to get high volumes. My makeshift home-theatre system in my mom's old house was dirt-cheap to set up and it performed pretty good. :) )

I don't even see any reason to get blu-ray anyway if you can't afford a HDTV. I don't even care about whether my videos are HD or SD. Sure, it all looks prettier in HD, but I still don't really care because it's price is way beyond my income. :lol

The joys of working at an electronics store: I get cheap cool stuff. :lol
I don't have an HD TV yet but I may pick one up in the near future when I am able to apply my staff discount.
