Title: Biggest Windows fail ever
Post by: Littlefoot Fan on January 16, 2012, 12:24:33 PM
I was just retrieving files from an old harddrive that was having some problems when I came across this very strange yet hilarious glitch. Clearly something is messed up on some of the sectors of the harddrive causing Windows to think that the files are absurdly huge :p

It's interesting to see that Windows actually has built-in support for petabytes (PB). A petabyte would be the equilivent of 1,000 terabytes, which in turn would equal 1,000,000 gigabytes! So Windows thinks that those files are 89,700 terabytes, or 89,700,000 gigabytes! Seeing how some of the largest harddrives are 4 terabytes at most (could be larger ones now, not sure) that's pretty absurd, and I found it highly amusing :p

I have just one word for this. Wait, it's not even a word, more of a reaction. And here it is:

What a coincidence that those sectors would be hit.

Hey, I wonder if they even invented a computer that could potentially hold that much memory.  That would be pretty cool if they did.

Hmmm... I wonder if Windows can operate values that are higher than petabytes. Someone should check it out. :)

Funny indeed, thanks for posting the information.  I've never even heard of petabytes.

Yup, that's what happens when you have too much porn on your computer XD

Nah, seriously, didn't actually know about the PB myself, I knew about terrabytes and all that, but not the bigger version of it.  Well okay, I did know about it, but didn't know how big it actually was.  It is impressive, too bad computers only have 4TB at the most right now.

The only way I actually learned about petabytes was in a class in my school where we learned about hard drives, file sectors, and all that, but it's such a ridiculous amount of data that we're nowhere near it yet. Imagine a long time down the road when we have games that are petabytes in size, it would be so advanced we would probably have an entire system similar to the Matrix

WTF!?

That's like the equivalent of a big server farm on 1 computer!

Wow, that's insane! Petabytes are in the quadrillions of bytes, aren't they?
