He's telling the others about when his mum first gave him a tree star.

Littlefoot: I was chewing on these yucky twigs when my mom said. "Littlefoot come here quickly. Look a tree star." Then she picked it and brought it down to me and I started playing with it like this."

They don't need computers and mobile phones... a simple leaf does the trick as well.

Littlefoot's first toy. It's obvious how much sentimental value his tree star possessed, and it was a tragic moment in his life when it got destroyed. This tree star, while not quite the same, reminds him of the one his mother gave to him as a hatchling. To paraphrase Ducky123's quote for today's standard...
