Title: This really bothers me...
Post by: landbeforetimelover on May 20, 2007, 09:52:31 PM
I don't know why but whenever someone uses the word silly, it makes me cringe.  By the way, in LBT, the characters always use this word.  On lbt 5 however, cera said "this is so stupid" when they were leaviing footprints.  This is the only time the word stupid replaced the word silly in LBT.  Why is that?

No clue whatsoever.  That's mild anyway compared to what kids of comparable ages say today.

Is not silly a less harsh term than stupid?

Yes.  That's what makes me cringe.  I even think stupid is a dumb word.  Silly is even worse.

And dumb is not dumb? I have heard people complaining about the word dumb as well.
Whenever I want LBT characters to "express their anger" in my LBT fanfictions I am at a loss which word they might properly use. Perhaps English language lacks the kind of swearwords which people can use without either euphemising (shoot, blooming ..., darn) or being too rude.
Verdammte Hacke nochmal!!!

Dumb is bad but not as bad as silly or stupid.

I personally don't see a problem with any of those words. Oh sure, stupid and dumb may not be flattering, but they are better than..some other words that can be used.

How right you are.  I just find the word silly to be more than annoying.  I would rather have them say almost anything else.

I guess It's a matter of opinion.  I can't stand that word.  When someone says it, it just makes me want to scream or slap them or something.

To be honest, I don't really understand why you hate that word so much.

I also have that same problem, cringing at certain words.  I'm not going to mention them because it makes me cringe even when I say them myself in a private place.

Honestly, I used to be the same way for a Lot of years.  It seemed to have calmed down with me in recent years, but I remember as a kid, going absolutely crazy when Anyone (including myself!) said any of the following words with any frequency:

Delicious
Tasty
Cozy

I can't remember any others at the moment; I think that was it.  I'm glad I outgrew that though.  I still can't explain it!  It was most odd.  I abolutely could not STAND hearing or saying those words...*shrug*.

Which alternative word did you use to give a compliment to somebody for good cooking Tim?
Yummy?

Same here.  I'd say "good", "very good", "awesome", whatever made sense in the circumstance.

Yeah.  I just don't really see the point in using words like cozy, silly, yummy, delicious, or other words like that.
