Title: Petrie Diet
Post by: Timber on June 09, 2007, 12:30:29 AM
I was wondering why he was thrown in as a leaf eater when he is clearly a meat meater. I understand he is friends with the gange and a member but why change what he is?  :bang

To be more specific, he is a fish-eater.

I heard a theory about this before. It was something about Petrie's kind being primarily omnivorous, opportunitists (sp?), and ate what was available.

I think he would go for insects too (just like Chomper), but for the purpose of the story he was apparently turned from an omni- into a herbivore. They needed a flyer, but there was no way they thought they could integrate anyone but a leafeater into the group of the movie. In LBT 5 they mention berries as one of his favorite foods and also show him as kind of eager to experiment ("just a bit of stinky on it").
As for Petrie not being presented as the omnivore his species would made him it is just one of many cases where LBT is not scientifically correct. We just have to live with it ;)

Well reading about petrie here I knew about it but I wasn't even bothered. Petrie is Petrie and Land Before Time is great. For almost 20 years no one brought that up till now and kind of show people not really bothered by the true reality of the dinosaurs and also it just a animated cartoon that WE all love to watch and big fans of and whatever not correct with the dinosaurs there don't concern reality of our world to theirs. We all enjoy watching our most favoute dinosaurs on any movie of tv series :)

That what really counts not the little things that might be wrong here and there. We all just love the little guys :)

As a matter of fact the question about Petrie being no herbivore was brought up on earlier occasions already. I agree though that science is of rather limited significance for LBT. It can be fun to look at LBT "scientifically", but only if one doesn't take it too serious.

Petrie is not the only case by the way. Mo too would be everything but a leafeater. The same goes for Elzy. Guido would probably be an omnivore too and so would be Ruby (is there any reference to her diet in the series at all?).

well on the first tv episode, "the cave of many voices" we see her eat a treestar that Ducky gives her for chasing off the domeheads that stole her treestars.  They never show her eating an egg.

In the episode "The star day Celebration" we see Ruby eating a shell she finds underwater, while going through her flashbacks.
