Title: Mario(all)
Post by: Cyberlizard on August 15, 2007, 01:22:28 PM
With this being a game forum, I'm surprised someone hasn't started a thread on the great bambino of video games.  Seriously, who HASN'T played a Mario game?  Anybody who doesn't know the history of the Mario Brothers can NOT be classified as a gamer.  I have 4 Mario games.  The first Super Mario Brothers, Super Mario World, Super Mario 64 and New Super Mario Bros.

I played almost any Mario game released. I think Mario is truly super (LOL Sorry for the bad pun).

I've played Super Mario Brothers, Super Mario Brothers 2 (american version), Super Mario Brothers 3, Super Mario World, Super Mario World 2 (didn't like this one very much), Mario is Missing, Mario Paint, a bit of Mario Sunshine, a bit of Mario Kart (N64 version) and one of the older Mario Kart racing games.

Let's face it!  Mario has been with the gaming indistury for 21 years for a good reason.  He makes great games!  When it comes to gaming, this guy knows what he's doing most of the time. :)

I've played nearly every Mario game myself.  It is indeed tough to choose which is the best of them all.  Yet, in the end, I'd go with the classic Super Mario Bros. 3.  There's a reason I have that game as #1. :)

*goes back to watching ScrewAttack's Top Ten Mario Games.*

Mario saved and created video gaming as we know it, thus, he is the king of video games. I've played a lot of Mario myself. My favorites include the original, SMB 3, Super Mario 64 and the DS remake, The New Super Mario Bros., and most of the Mario kart games [I don't like Super Circuit and Super Mario Kart (the SNES one, which is the only one before Mario Kart 64)] lacks any real charm for me, plus, both game packs I've played for it erase my data with an alarming frequency.

I've played almost all of them except for the Mario Land games for Game boy, Mario Paint and Mario Sunshine. My favorite would also have to SMB3 as well.

Let's swing this topic in a new direction. What about Mario Party? Anybody ever done that? What's your favorite (mine's the 2nd one)? What about those quirky moments you never saw coming?

I liked the first one the best. After the 3rd one they all started to go downhill. I've always hated how when your about to win, someone lands on the chance space and swaps stars and you end up losing.

I love the Mario series! The original "Super Mario Bros." for the Nes was the very first game I ever played and beat. I still have fond memories of actually playing that game to the point that it actually shorted down on me  :cry . Fortunately, "Super Mario All-Stars" came to my rescue at about that time.

Oh yeah, the man in blue overalls, the savior of gaming: Mario! He is, as strange as it is to say this, the original prototype that all of our modern gaming has been evolved from.

My favorite Mario games would have to be the original, Super Mario World, Super Maro World 2: Yoshi's Island, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, and Super Mario 64.

I only have one thing to say about the Mario Party games ouside of "Mario Party 2": Bleh!  :mad

I've actually only played Mario Party 1, 2, 3, and 7. My favorite was 2, but I also like 1 and 7. However, I just didn't like the 3rd one. Part of the reason, I suppose, could be the Paper Mario style graphics. But there was something I just didn't like about it. Again, the 2nd one rocks for me. There's just something about that game in the series that makes it stand out for me.

Well, we can't say that Mario has had a few bumps in the road.  There have been a few crappy Mario games out there.  Hotel Mario anyone?  :x  Seriously, never trust the Russians with the rights to a video game character.  Because all they'll do is chew him up and spit him out on their crappy system known as the CDi...  :x  :x  :x  A little advice for the Russians:  LEAVE VIDEO GAMES TO THE JAPANESE!!

I've never played Hotel Mario. I never even knew what it was until it was brought up a couple of weeks ago when Lain_EX did his YouTube poop and it was mentioned that some scenes were from a game called Hotel Mario. Needless to say, I'm in no rush to buy the game.

You haven't heard of the CDi?  It went down in History as one of the worst consoles in history.  And the games weren't any better.  In 1993 they came out with Link and the Faces of Evil and Zelda:  Wand of Gamelon.  And then a year later they came out with Hotel Mario.  After that, Nintendo regretted giving the rights of Mario and Zelda to Philips.

Then be glad you haven't played it.  I know I am after seeing those horrendous cutscenes.  lol

Nope. Never heard of CDi. I don't really read up on video gaming history that much, and we didn't get a lot of video games when we were younger either. Only had a handful for each system. There's a bunch of games for the older systems that I never even heard of before.

Wand of Gamelon? That title does ring a bell...

Mario must be the most popular video game character of them all.
His games just makes fun. :^.^:
And fun is good.  :D

I can't wait till Super Mario Galaxy comes out for Wii.
And Mario & Sonic - At the Olympic Games.  :^.^:

Hehehe, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games.... THAT game will go down in history for sure.

Anyway, I do know of the CDi, but I only heard about it recently, and I really don't know anything about it, other than the fact that it is regarded to be an absolute failure in video game history, as well as it's games.

CDi...Oh man, Hotel Mario XD

Mario has been a gaming icon, hailed as one of the best videogame characters of all time. I've played most of his games and they are pretty good, especially the Mario Party games, they're a blast in multi players.

I can't wait for Super Mario Galaxy and Mario & Sonic X3

Good old, Mario. What is there to say about him? A true gaming icon. I've played most of his games. Most of them are awesome. To me the best one is Super Mario Brothers 3. Just an overall fun game to play on a rainy day. You know it's funny, it seems that most of the people I've met tell me that the first video game they ever played was Super Mario Brothers, and who could blame them? It's what saved gaming in America. Even those anti-Mario fans should show some appreciation to the portly plumber because without him, there would be no Playstations or XBOXs.

Hehehehe, remember when we made fun of it one time, Keni?

Luigi: "Maybe the koopa will give us the flashlight if we pursue him."

(Seconds later the gang is tied up from the koopa)

Sora: "Nice going, Luigi. You sure pursued him." XD

I can actually do a pretty good imitation of Mario, too. I showed it to Keni once and he said, "Are you sure that was you? That sounded like Mario." XD Anyways, Mario is awesome and I hope Super Mario Galaxy will be another great Mario game.

If you want to go for a hard Mario game, try Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels.  THAT is where we're talking hard.  Tons of reviewers have given this one "Hardest Mario Game Ever!".

BTW, Super Mario Sunshine was awarded second hardest.  It is especially hard to get ALL the Shine Sprites. (One thing I have yet to accomplish. :D)

The one part I find hard about Super Mario Sunshine is when you face the Manta Ray.  All that ooze he leaves behind HURTS and it's difficult to avoid. <_<

I have played that game, haven't beat it without save states though. I'll try again when Super Mario All Stars comes out for the VC.

As I understand it, there are two American versions of The Lost Levels floating around: The Super All-Stars version and the slimmed down Super Mario Bros. Deluxe version. I've never played either that much, and I know it was a headache for my brother to finish them.

I've actually never played Super Mario Sunshine, and with Super Mario Galaxy on the waiting list, I'm in no particular rush to do so, either.

Well, you're looking at someone who has beaten both.  Man, Bowser sure makes it difficult for you to win, huh?  And getting to the final level is pain enough in both those games.  I can't tell you how relieved I was when I finally beat them. -_-

Oh, and those that pull off a Speed Run of Lost Levels, I congradulate them.  Even if they use an emulator, you KNOW they're good. :)

Okay, if the mods have something against double posting, sorry, but I had to get this off my chest and couldn't wait for someone else to post.

Anyways, who here would like the idea of both Sonic and Mario working together to take down some sort of evil force that neither could beat alone in a game?

I know that's an overused idea in fanfics these days, but it would be so cool as a game.  Heck, the idea alone would make that game have the potential to be the hottest game of the year! :^.^:

Random fact of Super Mario Sunshine that I wanted to put up.

In the game of Super Mario Sunshine, it is possible to beat it with only collecting a total of 50 Shine Sprites and no blue coins.  This, along with collecting ALL the Shine Sprites, is the hardest challenge in the game.

If ANYONE wants to know just how it's possible to pull it off, don't hesitate to ask.  Because you're looking at someone who actually pulled it off, and trust me, beating it is tough enough.

Someone posted a link to this (http://www.break.com/index/mario-level-can-autoplay.html) video. It's an amazing video of someone who figured out that one of the hardest levels in Super Mario World can be beaten by simply leaving the controller alone and doing nothing. It makes a once-difficult level ridiculously easy.

By the way, 10+ to whoever can figure out which version of the game this is from. I'll give you a hint, though -- it's not the US/NTSC version. ;)

I've seen that video before. From what I've heard it's actually a hacked fan-made stage and not an actual stage from Super Mario World. I don't remember a stage like that in Super Mario World and I played that game to death unlocking all the stages.

Speaking of classic Mario games, have you guys ever seen the video of some guy beating Super Mario Brothers 3 in 11 minutes? It's a pretty cool speed run, though I'm not sure if it was staged or not using an emulator.

I believe I saw that. Clint told me about it. He later said that the guy cheated. The guy recorded himself playing, and anytime he made a mistake, he would start back until he got it right, and then I believe he pasted the footage together to make it look like he achieved all that. I'd have to talk to him again about it, but yeah, according to Clint, the guy who made that speedrun cheated in some form. But perhaps I misheard him.

Anyone here ever pulled off the most famous tricks in the original Super Mario Bros.?

If anyone doesn't know what I'm talking about, I mean the minus stage, jump over the flag pole and endless 1-ups?  My big brother has been able to pull off all three without cheating.  I can only pull off the minus stage sadly, but it was so amazing seeing him do it all back then. :)

I never thought it was possible to jump over the flag pole. I've tried and it never worked. And I've tried to get to minus world. I watched a vid and tried to repeat it myself, but I just wasn't going through.

Well, there are actually TWO ways to get into the minus world.  You either go through the wall like many others have, or you can do it a much simpler way.

With this trick, you simply go to the warp pipes the normal way.  However, you stop yourself near the end and cautiously walk forward until you fall through.  If done right, the numbers won't appear and you can go into the World 2 warp pipe to access the minus world.

It's alot easier to pull off than the other way and well worth it. :)

Jumping over the flag poles in the infamous "Lost Levels", aka, the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2, is not always a good idea. I've seen it happen where it stead of a warp pipe taking you forward, you get a warp pipe that takes you to World 1. Not good. Also, I have done the Minus World thing (the old-fashioned way), but how do you get infinate lives or jump over a flag? Also, what causes the flags to give you an extra life on occasion? I've had that happen every now and then, and it still baffles me.

To pull off the infinate lives trick takes tons of practice.

First, go to World 3-1.  Near the end you'll notice two green koopas walking down the stair-case like wall.  If you jump on one of them at just the right place while holding down A, the shell will bounce back off the wall and Mario will automatically continously jump on it.  Multiple hits without touching the ground makes the points rack up.  1st jump gives 100, second gives 200, third gives 400 and so on.  Eventually, you will start getting extra guys for each jump.  Keep going until time runs out.  Do it again, this time till about 100 seconds left and you'll trigger a glitch that, when you beat the level, shows that you have "crown-ice" lives, which will mean infinite.  It's a very cool trick. :)

As for the jump over the flag pole, first get to World 3-3.  Near the end is a balance bar.  Stay on the left side until the right side is close to the top.  If timed right, the bar on the right side will be stuck for a split second, which is your chance to quickly run across it and jump with the Super Jump.  If timed right, you'll soar over the flagpole without even touching it.  After which, I dare you to continously move forward. ;)

That help, Manny cav? :)

Okay, let me see if I can explain it any better...

You know how you get to the warp pipes in World 1-2 the normal way, right?  By running on the top of the level and going all the way past the exit pipe?

Well, stop just past the exit pipe and start tapping the Control Pad forward until you fall down and land in front of the warp pipes.

If done right, the screen will not have gone far enough to trigger the numbers to appear, thus giving you a chance to go into the pipe on the other end and activate the minus level.

Understand it now? :)

If you can't understand now, I won't try to help you any further. -_-

Hahaha, I think I've heard about the infinite lives before. :D

Also, I once did a challenge on the Super Mario Bros. SNES All-Star version -- get the highest high score possible, which is 9,999,990 without cheating, using warp pipes, without saving the game to get lives and going back to the first level, or even getting game overed, etc. I started a fresh game with the standard number of lives with no intention of ever skipping any levels (I didn't). I went through the entire game, getting as many points and staying alive for as long as possible. I did complete my challenge, getting the 9,999,990 points (it wouldn't go any higher) without skipping any levels, cheating, or even losing all of my lives. I must have played through the * set of levels a dozen times! It was a pretty long affair. I actually almost got game overed a few times, to the point of getting down to my last life (or VERY close, like, two lives). However, I eventually recovered, going all the way up to the maximum 99 and staying around there. When I got all of the points, I committed suicide and deliberately lost all of my lives. The monument of my achievement still stands today on the Super Mario Bros. All-Star version introduction screen that shows you the high score.

I believe my brother acomplished that as well, though i don't have my SNES anymore so i'm not sure. As for me, i'm not good enough at the original Mario Brothers to attempt it.

In the SNES Super Mario All-Stars version of Super Mario Bros., they actually took out the infiniate glitch.  You can still get as many lives as you want the same way, they just won't be infinate anymore.  The trick can ONLY be accomplished in the originial NES version.

So, if you want to try the trick, you'd best get ready to fire up that old NES again. :)

Oh, and DarkHououmon, there was one last thing I forgot to mention.  When doing it the way I gave you, you have to make sure Mario is at the right edge of the screen when moving forward.  It's rather tricky to set it up like that, but if you pull it off, you have a better chance of making my way of the trick work.

Oh, one last thing, my way only works in the original NES version.  Nintendo pretty much fixed the problem when they brought it to All-Stars. :D

I feel like telling an old story. :DD

My brother started a good old fashioned game of Super Mario Bros. 3 on our ever-aging NES. However, this particular playing would become infamous and frequently talked about between me and my brother. Very early on in the game (I'm not sure if it was in the first world or even at the title screen), the game went into something that happens not too commom, but it does happen -- something we call "construction". The sprites and backgrounds got garbled. However, this was a case as worse as we had ever seem. Weird things happened, like a P-Switch was a Goomba, a coin was a Koopa Troopa, A Buzzy Bettle was a brick, a P-Switch was a brick, a brick was a hammer, and the list went on and on snd on (of course, it didn't necessarily happen exactly like that, but you get the idea). It was madness!!! Nothing was as it seemed. This went on well into his game. The "construction" finally cleared up somewhere in the Pipe World (World 7). But, man, that was a long run in the game to have to be putting up with that. Our NES is full of surprises like this, not all of them as harmless (relatively speaking, obviosly) as this, though. :lol It was the day that SMB3 messed up. The NES is still chugging on, but the SMB3 cartridge is missing. I would actually like to see it again, as that is the last NES cartridge I remember buying brand new, and at Toys 'R' Us, to boot. I've got the Super Mario All-Stars re-release, but it's never quite the same.

Check it out, guys!  It's the 5:00 speed run of the original Super Mario Bros.:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPjsBsz4trk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPjsBsz4trk)

Everything here is totally legit.  I even tried a few things that looked like they weren't possible, and they actually worked.  Turns out right from the start Nintendo had glitches to work out, and this guy found ones to use to his advantage. :)

And on another note, the preview for Super Mario Bros. Z Ep 7 is now on YouTube.  There are quite some surprises from this.  Especially one you won't believe. :)

Yup. Very legit. He actually focuses on beating the level rather than doing all of those fancy moves on enemies. (Which most speed runners who cheat do)

I already saw the SMBZ preview. Very awesome! Can't wait for the actually episode!

BTW, I found out something that may come as a surprise to many, and people who own a Wii will be able to get this on the Virtural Console. The real Super Mario Brothers 2 that was only available in Japan if finally coming to America after all of this time. The actually version! Not the altered versions for Super Mario Brothers DX (Game Boy) and Super Mario All-Stars (SNES) the actually version released on the Famicom in 1986.

Whoa!  I just sat through one of the most impressive runs of Super Mario Bros. 3 I have ever seen.

This guy not only got 100%, but also showed off tons of secrets and got a star at the end of each board.

You have to check out his 26 part vid. (Each part is about 5:00 long.)

Here's the link to the best Super Mario Bros. 3 player in the world!

Pretty cool videos. A lot more legit than the beating it in 11 minutes thing. I can never get enough of those Mario 3 clips. To me, Mario 3 was the best Mario game of all time. It just had an amazing fun factor that never lets up. I've played the game on an emulator in recent years, but I feel that the full experience is when you play it on your TV. Sadly, my Mario 3 cartrage doesn't work anymore, but thankfully the Wii's Virtual Console has finally realeased it. Is it just me or do they like to save the best for last? They did that with the Mario Advance games which were GBA ports of the classic Mario games, and SMB3 was the last one to come out for that series under the name Super Mario Advance 4, and now it was the last game to come out after the first two, Doki Doki Mario (a.k.a Super Mario Brothers 2 of America), and Super Mario World. Well, when I get a Wii I'm going to download that game! It is a must have and I reccomend it to all Wii owners. :)

Has anyone tried Mario Galaxy yet? I've played it for the last few days and i can say that its definitely one of the best mario games. The controls movement wise take a little getting used when running on the side or bottom of a planet. The music, which is all orchestrated, is amazing, the best in a video game as far as im concerned. The only problem i really had the the difficulty of the bosses. The bosses were never really hard, even the last boss. Overall the difficulty is well balanced with some really tough levels with some of the later levels. While i'm on the topic of levels, the level design is great as well, with some really crazy ideas. Also, if you pre-order it you get this!

Finally, someone mentions Galaxy! I got it myself the day it was released (Also got the coin) and it's super awesome! Best Mario game to date!

The game is balanced with tough and easy stars, the graphics are gorgeous and the gameplay is brilliant. The game is very trippy with the gravity and all the different planets, and it's really fun launching yourself in the stars and fly accross the galaxy from planet to planet. The game is also cute and adorable with the Lumas and Rosalina.

All in all every Wii owner should pick this game, it's a must buy and it's extremely fun.

Yeah, I know this topic hasn't been active in awhile, but I just wanted to throw my two cents. After FINALLY getting a Wii I was able to play Galaxy and it is AWESOME! I love every minute of the game. The graphics, gameplay, everything. The music is so catchy, too. I can't stop humming the songs! I'm so glad I got this game as a present, 'cause you'll want to play it again and again...until Brawl steals the spotlight on it. XDD

As for me, I have planned on waiting until Christmas to have it.  The main reason is because I need to save as much money as possible to get Christmas gifts for my family.  However, I play it during my lunch break since they have the full game set up for anyone to play at a rather secure Wii. (Tempered Glass Case surrounding the console, along with the controls being attached to a special wireless device that works wonderfully, which is imbedded into the shelf.) I set up my own personal file on there, so I have to hope no one erases it.  However, with how far I've gotten, there's a small chance anyone will at this point.

Anyways, the game is great and quite addictive.  I have a hard time getting off early enough and so that I don't in trouble for staying on my lunch too long. (About 1 hour limit.  What are you going to do? :P:) I'm kind of glad a kid convinced me to get off yesterday.  I really wanted to beat Bowser Jr.'s butt since I was having such a hard time beating the level.  I would've stayed on until I beat him if it wasn't for that kid.

Most of the levels are fairly easy, but the game's alot of fun.  The combos you can pull off to reach higher ledges/enemies are incredible. (Ever seen Mario do his back flip AND spin attack together?  You reach quite some height with that move on this game.) And the boss battles are rather unique for a Mario game.  I just LOVE this game!  I can't wait for Christmas Day to arrive so I can finally have it! :^.^:

I am patient, but I just want this so badly that's it's driving me a little crazy.  Pray that I don't get sent to a mental instiution as I wait for the fateful day to arrive. :)

That is one of the reasons I like the Star Fox Assault music so very much -- it's orchestrated (at least I'm sure it is).

I have to say, the design of Galaxy is inspired. The hopping between mini-planets makes this the first truly 3-D platform game.

Having got almost the whole way though Galaxy, I have to say it contains 2 of the greatest moments I've ever seen:

The flying scenes in Melty Molten Galaxy. Flying out of an exploding volcano, and across the lava fields is amazing to watch.

BUT, even better:

Ice Mario wall jumping between two waterfalls.

I can just tell it is. I've even heard it at a place or two, such as information contained in an MP3 of the game (like the beautifully orchestrated Star Wolf Theme). If the orchestrated music in Super Mario Galaxy is better than Star Fox Assault's orchestrated music as you make out, then I'll be in for one huge surprise when I play this game. There's no way it couldn't be the best in a video game, or close to it.

wow, had a hard time finding this topic. So you've probably guessed that there was some announcement from E3 seeing how i'm doing it for a couple other topics.
First off, New Super Mario Bros for the Wii was announced and it includes 4 player co-op. A video of the game in action can be viewed here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UXbV61muJjE)

Secondly, Mario vs Donkey Kong 3 was announced for DSi ware with the option to make your own levels

Thirdly, Mario & Luigi 3 was shown (it was already announced a long time ago though, so not too big of news).

and finally, Super Mario Galaxy 2 was announced which was kinda unexpected but sweet. Heres (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ynFJlvWImlc) a video of that. The trailer shows some new things like riding on yoshi and a Drill power up.

Wow, a new super Mario Galaxy! I guess the folks at Nintendo know how to go with a winning formula... considering that they've been sticking to the basics of the mario games for many years. heh. Still, that is good news for fans of the series...
