Hey guys
Got this idea from Malte, though I don't know if it has already been made, but if you come from a foreign country, that dosen't speak English, then you can tell us what the character, places and titles are named in your language.
Translation English to Danish:
The Land Before Time = Landet For LÊnge Siden
The Great Valley Adventure = Dinosaurus-ungen Lillefod PÂ Nye Eventyr I Den Store Dal
The Time of the Great Giving = Jagten PÂ Det Forsvundne Vand
Journey Through the Mists = Rejsen Til TÂgernes Dal
The Mysterious Island = Den Mystiske ÿ
The Secret of Saurus Rock = Saurus Stenens Hemmelighed
The Stone of Cold Fire = Jagten PÂ Himmelstenen
The Big Freeze = Den Kolde Tid
Journey to Big Water = Rejsen Til Det Store Hav
The Great Longneck Migration = Den Store Udvandring
Invasion of the Tinysauruses = Mini Dinoerne Kommer
The Great Day of the Flyers = Flyvernes Dag
The Wisdom of Friends = Visdommens Venner
Littlefoot = Lillefod
Spike = Spir
Chomper = Snapper
Sharptooth = Skarptand
Leafeater = L¯vÊder
Longneck = Langhals
Threehorn = Trehorn
Flyer =Flyver
Swimmer = Sv¯mmer
Spiketaile = Spirhale
Grandma, grandpa = Bedste Mor, Bedste Far
Bright circle = Den Store Circle
Big Water = Store Vand
The Great Valley = Den Store Dal
The Mysterious Beyond = Det Mystiske Ukendte
Land of Mists = TÂgernes dal
Those charcters I haven't written are the same on Danish as in English. I hope I got them all. Tell me if you want a word translated.
Hope you like it :)

I've been watching them in Spanish, and while it's not my native tongue I can tell you the ones I know and guess on the ones to the best of my ability (perhaps Lain can fix the errors):
The Land Before Time = La Tierra Antes de Tiempo
The Great Valley Adventure = La Aventura del Gran Valle
The Time of Great Giving = El Tiempo del Dando Grande (it sounds funny XD may not be correct)
The Journey through the Mists = El Viaje a TravÈs de la Niebla (?)
The Mysterious Island = La Isla Misterioso
The Secret of Saurus Rock = ?
The Stone of Cold Fire = La Piedra de Fuego Fr“o (?)
The Big Freeze = El Helado Grande (?)
The Journey to Big Water = El Viaje a el Agua Grande (? "el" because the first syllable is accented, yes?)
The Great Longneck Migration = El EmigraciÛn de los Cuello Largos (I believe they omit "great")
The Invasion of the Tinysauruses (Tinysauri) = La InvasiÛn de los PequeÒosaurios
The Great Day of the Flyers = El Gran D“a de los Voladores (Hard to tell... the word "gran" may be omitted... but I dunno since on the 12th movie they say the 11th title XD)
The Wisdom of Friends = La Sabidur“a de Amigos (? can't check at the moment)
Littlefoot = Pie PequeÒo o Piecito... (I prefer Piecito, but they say Pie PequeÒo on the recordings...)
Spike = Spike... though they sometimes write P?a on the subtitles... which is technically also correct...
Petrie = Petrie
Ducky = Ducky, though the subtitles say Patita which can also be correct
Cera = Cera
Longneck = Cuello Largo
Threehorn = Trescuernos (singular and plural)
Flyer = Volador (which sounds nice)
Swimmer = Nadador
Spiketail... never heard it... (I don't have any where it's said) = P?acola?
Guido = G¸ido
The closest to sharptooth I ever seem to hear is "Otro Dinosaurio" which really just means another/other dinosaur -shrug-
Grandma/Grandpa = Abuela/Abuelo
The Mysterious Beyond becomes the Great Beyond... and sounds funny in true translation = El Gran Mas Alla ... or the great more there... XD
That's all I have for now
-
It depends on the context of the sentence and the region you're from and weather you like the older, more traditional Japanese or weather you like the new form.
I suppose the exact translation for Littlefoot would have to be something along the lines of:
wazuka kanezashi
I'm not sure. I still haven't been able to get LBT in Japanese.
The Japanese font on my computer sucks really bad, however you can see how it looks by looking at my pathetic attempt using a pen:
(http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa146/tlordame/littlefootinjapanese.jpg)
I'm not too good at writing Japanese, I know, but I'm not that good at writing English either! :p :lol
I always write better on my hand than on paper. :rolleyes:
(http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa146/tlordame/onhand.jpg)
EDIT: I'm lucky no one in my school can read Japanese except me. The stupid thing won't wash off! :lol

Nice idea Vistrup :yes
Here are the German translations (I added some remarks about the literal translations of the German titles. Sometimes the translators could have done a better job):
The land before time - In einem Land vor unserer Zeit (literally the German title means "In a land before our time").
The Great Valley Adventure - Das Abenteuer im Gro?en Tal
The Time of the Great Giving - Die Zeit der Gro?en Gabe (this title was poorly translated. In the movie itself they called the time of the great giving "die gro?e Zeit des Teilens" (literally "The Great Time of Sharing) which I think brought the meaning better accross).
Journey through the Mists - Im Tal des Nebels (literally "In the Valley of Mist").
The Mysterious Island - Die geheimnissvolle Insel.
The Secret of Saurus Rock - Der geheimnisvolle Berg der Saurier (literally: "The mysterious Mountain of the Saurians").
The Stone of Cold Fire - Der geheimnissvolle Zauberstein (literally: "The mysterious magic-stone").
The Big Freeze - Der erste Schnee (literally: "The first snow").
Journey to Big Water - Die Reise zum gro?en Wasser.
The Great Longneck Migration - Die gro?e Reise (literally: "The great Migration").
Invasion of the Tynisauruses - Das Geheimnis der kleinen Saurier (literally: "The Secret of the little Saurians").
The Great Day of the Flyers - "Die gro?e Flugshow" (literally: "The great flight show").
The Wisdom of Friends - "Auf der Suche nach dem Beerental" (literally: "In search of the Berryvalley").
The names of the characters were not translated in the German version. The only exception I can think of is Mr. Thicknose who was translated to "Meister Plattnase" (literally "Master Flatnose").
Longneck - Langhals
Threehorn - Dreihorn
Swimmer - Schwimmer
Flyer - Flieger
Spiketail - Dornenschwanz
The Great Valley - Das gro?e Tal
Treestar - Baumstern
Bright Circle - Gro?e Helle Scheibe (literally: "Big Bright Circle").
The Mysterious Beyond - Das geheimnissvolle Jenseits.
The Big Water - Das gro?e Wasser
Land of mists - Das Land der Nebel
The Thundering Falls - Die donnernden Wasserf‰lle
The Sheltering Grass - Die Spielwiese (literally: "The playing meadow").
The Sinking Sand - Der Moddersumpf (literally: "The muddy swamp").

Not so Vilstrup. I just had to enter the regional top-level-domain code into a google search to get pages from the respective countries. While I was not exactly surprised not to find any land before time pages within the domain of the Vatican city :lol I am a little disappointed I haven't yet found any Arabian covers. I am positive I saw Arabian LBT covers on an earlier occassion.

Some of these languages I've never even heard of. :lol I really dislike the genuine Japanese covers. The font that they use really sucks. -_-
-
I don't think I've seen any of those covers, Landbeforetimelover.
You don't happen to have a cover to share, do yer?
-
You don't happen to have a cover to share, do yer?
God, I wish! I would just die if I could get my hands on genuine Japanese copies of LBT. I would love to hear Littlefoot speak in Japanese. :yes
(http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa146/tlordame/lbt1.jpg)
They want 2,472 yen for it! :o I'm not paying that for a movie I already have, even if it is in Japanese. -_-
They only want 1,114 yen for this one. I might get it.
(http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa146/tlordame/lbt2.jpg)
This one looks even more interesting:
(http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa146/tlordame/lbt4.jpg)
Even more:

(http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa146/tlordame/lbt9.jpg)
(http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa146/tlordame/lbt11.jpg)
Just look at the description of the movie. It would take me forever to translate all that! :o
(http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa146/tlordame/description.png)
And one more cover:
(http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa146/tlordame/lbt10.jpg)
I might get one or two of these. Although, even the cheapest one (1,114 yen) is very expensive. With shipping, the movie would easily be over $20 US. -_-
-
Very understandable -_-
-
I want to see japan version very much too. Japanese have best voices for scoring cartoon films.:)

I still didn't recover any of the Arabian covers, but I'm absolutely certain that I did see at least one Arabian cover during a search quite a while before this thread was started.

hmm, you might find the covers again later, but it's a shame you haven't found them yet. I did look forward to see them. Well, if you kkep looking, then good hunting ;P

It is interesting to see all the different covers and see what the other languages look like. Also see what the text looks like in the text only posts.

Land of Mists = TÂgernes dal
Those charcters I haven't written are the same on Danish as in English. I hope I got them all. Tell me if you want a word translated.
Hope you like it :)
Hej Vilstrup,
Haha, ganska liten skillnad mellan Svenska och Dansk! :lol:
Ha det bra!

I've watched LBT 11 in Spanish before. That was interesting to say the least... :^.^: I guess it wasn't too much of a barrier coz I pretty much know the script word-for-word but still, the voices, particularly of the gang, seemed a lot "higher". By the sounds of it, from what I can recall, Littlefoot sounded almost like a girl was voicing him rather than a guy. :lol Wonder if they stick to the same voice actors for the dubs? Can anyone enlighten on that question?

When bying the movies in my country, you get to choose between:
Swedish
English
Norweigan
Danish
Spanish
as languages, some sounds really weird :lol:
Still, on the DVD's, the extra material is only available when English is chosed.

If I buy them in my country you can choose between
English
Dutch
French
German
Except for lbt9 which has got: English, Dutch, Norwegian and Swedish.. =P
Indeed some voices sound higher or lower in certain languages. When I recorded norwegian and swedish songs I heard that the norwegian voices were much lower then the swedish ones.. :D
-
Wow.
I didn't thought there were so many different languages of LBT. :blink:
It looks like LBT is far more popular. Hmm...
-
hehe, der har du ret, Lillefot :)
Well, the LBT goes proberbly around the world, but as Malte said, you won't proberbly find any for the Vatican City.
-
^ Amen to that ;)
It is sometimes funny to see the phonetical similarities between languages of the same background. "der har du ret" means "you are right about this"? The similar German phrase would be "da hast du recht".

Acctually, we Sweds thinks that Danish is difficult to understand in comparision to other neighbours, such as Norway.
I don't know about what the Danish people think though? :P:
/Lillefot
-
Actually, I understand English better, then Norwegian or Swedish, pretty odd I think :p
And another thing, how did you know what "Der har du ret" means Malte? :blink:
-
And another thing, how did you know what "Der har du ret" means Malte?
Because it sounds so similar to the German "da hast du recht". There are also many words very similar in Dutch and German so they can often be guessed.
Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Dutch, English, German are all so called "Indo-European" languages of the Germanic group. Other Indo-European languages include French, Spanish, Italian, and Portugese, but they are of the Romance family (with somewhat stronger Latin roots). There are many similar words in our languages and most languages also borrowed words from other languages.
For example the English word "gauntlet" is derived from an old Swedish term and the term "ski" (used in English and in German) is of Norwegian origin.
"Yacht" (also used in both languages) is of Dutch origin I think.
"Kindergarten" (literally "children garden") is a German word adopted into the English language.
The other way round the list of English words in the German language can hardly be counted. The English term "telephone" for example ousted the awkward German term "Fernsprecher" (literally "far talker").
-
Hey, we went trough just that in school recently :P:

Take it easy mate :blink: thought I would get a more simple explanation, and not a whole lectur :blink: but it explains why you did understand it.
Now a small test, hehehe :D
Anybody can tell me what "r¯d gr¯d med fl¯de" means
And if you know it, Lillefot, then don't spoil it too soon ;)

Hah there are quite some similairities between dutch and norwegian language if i listen to the movies. anyways. Dutch and german are very alike... But I think all languages are in some way related to eachother. as the word computer is being used in a lot of countries, because it is something 'new' and given the name computer. (but of course the french want to call it ordinateur) More and more inventions are being made over time, and because we are all so lazy we just take the word from another country and, if needed, change the pronounciation. :)
But that's what malte said anyways.
-
Did get that, alright.
I was just surprise by how far an explanation he would come up

Sometimes I just can't get my mouth shut :lol
Sorry about that mate ;)

Apology accepted, mate ;)

Reviving a very old topic. :yes
Anyway, I just got some Japanese fonts for my laptop. They were pretty hard to find, but I can now show you some names of LBT characters in Japanese that AREN'T written by me. :lol
Littlefoot:
(http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa146/tlordame/second%20album/japlittlefoot.jpg)
Even though it's different from my other translation, they are both correct. There are many different ways to say things in Japanese. B)
I couldn't just copy and paste the font here because obviously invisionfree doesn't support Japanese fonts. It looked like this when I just copied and pasted it:
wmg3 1s
-_-
-
how do you know all that chinese words or whatever it may be?
-
Well, I don't know how to write Japanese because I haven't memorized the alphabets, but I do have the equivalent of a third year Japanese student even though I've only taken 1 year because I have continued my own studies. To be able to write the Japanese words, I have to look at the Hiragana and the Katakana character chart:
(http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa146/tlordame/second%20album/characters.jpg)
Each sound in a word corresponds to a letter in the alphabet. I use the Hiragana alphabet to write LBT characters because the Katakana alphabet is only to write things that have no literal Japanese translation (such as the names of American people).
-
Sounds rather defficult, but pretty interesting.
-
Its not much different than learning what a letter looks like and associating a sound with it. Only difference is one you've been doing all your life the other you just saw in an image two minutes ago.
-
Ahh... though what would the characters name be, and what would the names look like in Japanese?
-
of LBT films and these are the German:) :lol: Movie 1-10

Nice, very nice Littlefoot90. Thanks for it ;)
-
It is fun to see those from different countries and in different languages.
-
Aye, it is, though do you have any words to add, Kor??
-
I only know English and everyone has seen those dvd covers.
-
That's okay
-
Here are the Portuguese versions of LBT, however I'll have to give two, since there are differences between the Brazilian Portuguese (BR) translation which is the one that's commercialized and the European Portuguese (PT) which is the one shown on TV (=
English to Portuguese translation:
The Land Before Time = Em Busca Do Vale Encantado
The Great Valley Adventure = A aventura continua
The Time of the Great Giving = A era da grande partilha (BR), O tempo da grande partilha (PT)
Journey Through the Mists = Viagem atravÈs da Neblina (PT), Viagem pela terra das brumas (BR)
The Mysterious Island = A ilha misteriosa
The Secret of Saurus Rock = O mistÈrio da Rocha Saurus
The Stone of Cold Fire = A Pedra de Fogo Frio
The Big Freeze = A grande nevasca
Journey to Big Water = Viagem aos oceanos
The Great Longneck Migration = A grande migraÁ„o
Invasion of the Tinysauruses = Invas„o dos minissauros
The Great Day of the Flyers = O dia dos voadores
The Wisdom of Friends = Sabedoria dos Amigos
Littlefoot = PÈzinho (PT), Littlefoot (BR)
Spike = Espig„o (PT), Espora (BR)
Chomper = Guloso (BR), Chomper (PT)
Ducky = Patola (PT), Patassaura (BR)
Cera = Cera (PT), Saura (BR)
Sharptooth = Tiranossauro (BR), Dente Afiado (PT)
Longneck = PescoÁo Comprido (PT), PescoÁo Longo (BR)
Threehorn = Tr’s Chifres (BR)
Flyer = Voador
Swimmer = Nadador
Spiketaile = Cauda de esporas (BR)
Grandma, grandpa = AvÛ
Bright circle = Circulo Brilhante (BR), Sol (PT)
Big Water = ¡gua Grande
The Great Valley = Vale Encantado
The Mysterious Beyond = O misterioso alÈm
Land of Mists = Terra da Neblina (PT), Terra das Brumas (BR)
At least these are all I could think of =P
-
sounds confusing.
-
Not really. I think "A aventura continua" means "The Adventures Continues". It's not rare that translator may change the title a bit. But i don't think i would be able to recognize any character, except for Sharptooth. :lol:
-
If the Portuguese and the Russian name of the land before time was literally translated back into English, what would the names mean? The German title would literally translate into "In a land before our time" (makes sense in a way as obviously there is time in the land before time :P:).
-
"Земля до Начала Времен" means "The Land Before the Beginning of Times".
-
"Em Busca do Vale Encantado" translates to "The Search for the Enchanted Valley", I forgot, the great valley is called "vale encantado", which means enchanted valley, although in the later movies they say "grande vale" which means great valley, but I think it's a lapse of the brasilian translators.
-
I don't know, but I wouldn't agree too much with the version the portuguese translated... Than Littlefoot was translated litterally, to "Pezinho" (Little Foot). Ducky was "Patola" (give it a variation of the name duck, and Patola is not the literal translation). All others gave literal translations, from Longneck being "PescoÁo longo" and Threehorn being "TricÛrnio" (correct me if I'm wrong in this one). Sorry for repeating what NewOrder said. <.<
Also, many of those are "Brazilian" translations, right?
-
Interesting how some names were kept much the same. I forgot the Russian alphabet has more letters then roman based ones like the European based languages like English, Spanish ect.
-
I forgot the Russian alphabet has more letters then roman based ones like the European based languages like English, Spanish ect.
Indeed, russian alphabet has 33 letter:
Аа Бб Вв Гг Дд Ее Ёё Жж Зз Ии Кк Лл Мм Нн Оо Пп Рр Сс Тт Уу Фф Хх Цц Чч Шш Щщ Ээ Юю Яя
-
I think it's funny how the dutch names are all a bit different when it comes to characters.
I've given the names before, on page 2. Littlefoot is flatfoot, ducky would be translated with beaky. Fladder is some kind of flapping wings. I guess spike is well translated according to his dinosaurname, cera stays thesame.
I wouldn't have a clue of Ruby's name in dutch. I still think it's unfair.
-
Explorer, "Patola" is actually european portuguese, but most of them are brasilian translations. I've separated the portuguese and brazilian translations, I forgot "TricÛrnio", they also call them "Tr’s Chifres" which means Three horns.
Indeed cyrillic has 33 letters, however two of them are silent stops, which are hard to explain. Cyrillic is based on the greek alphabet instead of latin.
-
Okay, I think I'll try to revive this topic, since I've met new people on the forum, since I left. So I'm wondering, if there's some people who have different names, or words for the LBT universe. And ofcause, this should be people who haven't already been on the topic and tell, what the characters names are in their country.
-
I saw the chinese one a while ago called somthing like
Little leg.......
Littlefoot90 was banned so he created a new account here please see!

Here you go, some words/names in hungarian:

The Time of the Great Giving = A Nagyszerű Aj·ndÈkoz·sok Kora

The Mysterious Island = A RejtÈlyes Sziget
The Secret of Saurus Rock = A Szaurusz Szikla Titka

-
Awesome Steven :)
Tell, the names of the characters, are they literally translated into Hungarian or do they have a different meaning if they were literally "re-translated" into English?
-
There are more hungarian translation mistakes in some episodes. For example in the Journey to Big Water, they used other names than in the previous episodes.
Cera was Szera instead of Kist¸lˆk
Littlefoot was Kicsil·b instead of Tappancs
Ducky was Buci instead of Kacsacsőr
Spike was Duci instead of T¸skÈs
and Petrie was Petri instead of Rˆpcsi.
You can imagine how annoying it was.
Another embarrassing thing, that in the second movie Cera has a voice of a boy in hungarian. That was nonsense.
:rolleyes
Malte, I have edited my previous post so you can see the literally re-translated version of the names. :)
-
Finally some new words to put to the collection. Perfect, simply perfect, I need to write those down soon... wonder how many languages I've got from now :p
-
Anyone seen the cantonese version.
-
Aw, man, I'm so excited. Yesterday, I was getting bored of studying for finals, so I decided to look up the Land Before Time on Chinese websites. As it turns out, them have translated some of the movies into Chinese. I'm watching The Land of Mists in Chinese right now, and it's sweet! Here's the link (http://www.56.com/u93/v_MzI2ODU3NDY.html). Subtitled for anyone trying to learn the language.
I also read up some Chinese movie sites. Despite the fact that not many people know about it, the people who do really love it. Most are oblivious to sequelious, and the people love it! Too bad the songs are still in English.
This brings me back to my original topic. How do people perceive LBT in your country? Just for lolz, what are the characters' names and titles in your language?
The Land Before Time- 小脚板走天涯
(if you translate this back literately, it means Littlefoot walks the world)
Littlefoot-小脚板
Ali- 艾利
Cera- 索拉
Ducky- 荙基
Petrie- 比芝
Spike- 史伯
-
