Title: The Gang of Five MSN chats
Post by: Malte279 on April 14, 2008, 04:30:33 PM
Of lately many of us have participated in chats with many others of us on MSN. We had literal Gang of Five chats and even larger ones. I think the largest we had so far was a GOS chat (with S as in seven).
The problem about such large chats is that there is a certain risk about them being dissolved into a number of individual chats between some participants on topics the others cant say anything about. Those chats tend to become confused or end with most members falling silent before long.
Nevertheless I think that there may be potential for really interesting chats with many participants if we can find a topic at the GOF (something LBT related would be the most obvious choice for something most of us could contribute too) to discuss on MSN. Maybe some GOF messages can provide inspiration for a continuation of the discussion on the more direct (and sometimes les long winded :lol) level that an MSN chat allows for.
What do you think?

That sounds like a wonderful idea. But with my home computer having dialup still...I may not be able to contribute as much as I would like. But I still say go for it!

I'm not too good in large chats, but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy them. If anyone wants an extra person and I'm online, I'd be happy to join in.

the most I've been in at a time is around 3 or 4, and those were fun.

I'm fine with group chats, but no more than 3 at a time......EVER!  It gets way too confusing and no one notices when one of the people are quiet.  Not to mention it gets harder and harder to find a topic between all of the participants that all are interested in the more participants there are.  I can't even imagine a chat with 6 other individuals at once.  Waaaaaaay too confusing for my taste.

Also, I can't chat between 2 people in different windows.  One person always gets neglected and I feel like I'm spreading myself too thin.  I stick to one-on-one communication all the time unless in a group chat.

I find myself chatting with multiple people everyday. I've gone with chatting with around 7-8 people in different windows on some cases. I personally find it a relatively easy task to handle more than one chat at a time.

Personally I have no problems talking to a number of people at once.  Though maybe that is because when I use to go to school back in the neanderthal age I use to be reading about 5 books at once and had no problem keeping them all straight.

I've been in chats with 17 people at the same time, me excluded. I could still follow it, but that's me probably. I love those chats, there wont be a silence. But 5 is quite good to follow still isn't it?

Good idea, malte.

Before I forget, in regards to Conferences, here's what I'd like to say:

I have a dislike of Conferences in general. I'm not very talkative in them and I don't tend to feel too comfortable in them. Although I will join Conferences sometimes, if I'm in the mood. I just have one simple request before anyone invites me to a Conference: Ask. Please, just ask me first. I'm not always in the mood for a Conference, and I really hate being randomnly invited into a Conference I don't want to be a part of.

I have always been biased (by bad experience) against large MSN conferences myself. This is why I was surprised at how well it was working out several times, which made me think that perhaps there is some interesting "new land" to discover if people are with this. If chats become too confused and unwieldy perhaps they could be "moderated"? I have just a vague idea that it might be interesting, I may be wrong, and I'm eager to hear your opinions and perhaps ideas. Maybe it is just a whim of mine, but maybe it is not.

They can be fun, though as someone mentioned it can be hard to keep it within an area everyone can comment on.  I forget at times but I do try to pay attention to see if everyone is commenting and if not ask if there are areas they like to talk about so they can comment instead of being excluded since they do not know much of the subject of the current conversation.

I'd like to help you out on this problem. I've used the UK version so it was in english. I dont know if you mind, or if it works. If these links dont work then search at google for 'msn messenger' you'll sure find a download.

Here you can download msn messenger, green button with download on it. (http://uk.messenger.imagine-live.com/Messenger/Launch/en-GB/Default2.aspx?thisTour=) or the orange one if you want to. At the same time this site explains what it really is.

here you can create an email adres (https://accountservices.passport.net/reg.srf?wa=wsignin1.0&rpsnv=10&ct=1208499012&rver=4.0.1534.0&wp=LBI&wreply=http:%2F%2Fwindowslive.uk.msn.com%2F&id=1184&bk=1208499024&cru=http://login.live.com/login.srf%3fwa%3dwsignin1.0%26rpsnv%3d10%26rver%3d4.0.1534.0%26wp%3dLBI%26wreply%3dhttp:%252F%252Fwindowslive.uk.msn.com%252F%26lc%3d1033%26id%3d1184&sl=1&vv=550&lc=1033)

With this emailadres and password you can login to the program MSN messenger, which you have downloaded and installed. After that you can add contact persons and chat with them individually, or more at a time.

Any more help needed in that case you can pm me

Sadly, I'm just not in the mood for MSN conversations anymore.  I used to live on MSN and talk to people all day.  I guess I kinda burned myself out.  Typing things out and hitting enter so that others can see what you typed instantaneously just doesn't appeal to me anymore.  I much prefer forums unless a serious problem needs to be resolved quickly.

Oh, well MSN chats are always nice. ;-) And I have no problem with that. But there is something you should know. My dad installed before a short time a well (shit), sorry, program which cuts my internet connection after a certain time. Some of you already saw me appearing offline without saying good bye. It¥s not because I am mean because of some of you, it¥s just the program. -_-  So, for the future, if I will appear offline, without saying goodbye, you can definitly say, it¥s because of the program. Just that everybody here knows that   ;)

I expect there will be more such chats and I think we may reach 20 participants next time. Many GOF members who are on MSN frequently were not present yesterday by coincidence. Maybe we should aim at the next weekend for another large chat and think about topics that can be discussed (preferably main character discussions or discussions related to the original movie as here is the lowest "risk" that people have not seen it yet as is the case with so many sequels or episodes).

Count me in too. However, I suggest that we think of some topics beforehand or else the chat is likely to either deteriorate into a confusing mixture of chats between individuals excluding the others or else it might be a rather silent multiple people "chat".

It would be 10pm for our friends from Russia
It would be 7pm for the British, Scots, and Portuguese fans
I would be 3 pm for fans from Chile
It would be 2pm for our members living in the Eastern time zone of the US and Canada
I would be 1pm for those living in the central standard- (includes Mexico) 12pm for those living in the mountain standard- (not forgetting about Canadian Fans living in that zone) and 11am for those living in the Pacific standard time zone.
I hope I forgot no time zone of anyone I have seen on MSN so far from the GOF.

^ That's true of course, but I am not aware of any GOF members who live in Russia east of the Ural, therefore I thought it unnecessary to enumerate those zones where none of our members live anyway (for the same reason I only mentioned the Western Australian time zone and not the other two to be found in Australia). It might have just caused confusion.

Bump! :D

After many months, it seems like there hasn't been much in the way of GoF MSN gatherings.  Anywho, I'd still love to see a group of us find some time to just get together, talk and have fun for a bit!

We basically have two options if we're interested in doing so:
1) Set aside some time at some point to meet up and chat, which is asking for people to actually take time from their lives and is therefore probably unreasonable.

2) Hope we end up meeting up online, which hasn't been getting much going in the way of group chats.

I'm just wondering, are people here still interested in getting the occasional group chat going on MSN?

Usually people dont have eachother on a blocklist. But if so it would work this way:

Those 2 people just wont be able to see eachothers posts, and if one of them really has a good reason to have a person blocked they'll probably leave the conversation.

Name time, place and chanel.
I can be found online most of the time, the status depends though.  ;)
Would be great if we could arrange something!

I like the idea very much. As I am somewhat in charge of deciding when to do the stuff that needs to be done I am relatively flexible about a day.
Nick, if you were to join us in a chat that would be truly a small step for an LBT-fan but a giant leap for LBT-fankind  ;)

Since folks are all over the world in different time zones and with maybe different schedules it may be best to schedule one over a very large span of time, like 12 hours or something and maybe over more then 1 day, depending what most say about that day.

There are also several more GOF members with whom I would really like to chat on MSN but who don't have an MSN account yet. Apart from the land before time I'm also quite interested in history (did I ever mention? :p), politics, planes etc. There are many shared interests with some who don't have an MSN account yet. Not to push anyone too much but I'm sure we would enjoy those chats ;)
