Basically the title. Put up the Saddest Movie Scenes you have ever seen.
I'll start. Just about EVERY freaking movie Disney has ever made has something sad in it! The Death of Simba's Father, Alice Finding Herself Lost, Ms. Jumbo Getting Chained and Shackled... I could go on! Sheesh! Can't they make ANY movie without something sad in it for once? Even the most recent one, Wall-e, had a sad moment in it. I mean, the robot we come to know and love gets crushed? How could they go and do that? Darn! They always find a way to make us sad. :(
Well, your turn people. List the saddest movie scenes you've ever seen.
-
I agree on the Disney movies being so freaking sad! I mean they are supposed to be a family experience? How are younger children going to respond to death in such movies? Come on!!!!!!!!
Anyway, there are so many sad scenes I have suffered through, but possibly the worst for me is Titanic. Pretty much the last 20 minutes where the ship is sinking, it leave such an impact on me! Normally I can handle death in movies because I know in most cases the characters are fictional and the event happening would never happen in real life. Titanic retold factual events, so the majority of the things in the movie happened. I never truly understood how the thousands of people on the ship died until I first watched the movie.

Well, these ones right here, for starters:

Honestly, one of the saddest scenes I can think of was in the movie "Mask", which is about the life of Rocky Dennis, a young man who had a bad case of rhinitis and had dreams of traveling through Europe on a Harley with his best friend. The best friend ultimately bailed out, and poor Rocky died a couple of days later from complications. He was only sixteen years old. The night he died, he went in his room and removed every pushpin he had on a map of Europe of all the places he wanted to see. After his mother (played by Cher) found him and started mourning, she saw the empty map. She then picked up a handful of pushpins and said, "Now you can go anywhere baby." just before she started to push the pushpins back in allover the map of Europe. That really impacted me, and was even the inspiration for my map with pushpins placed over all the places I've been (as posted in the "Show Us Something Awesome" thread). The fact that this was a true story made it that much sadder. R.I.P. Rocky Dennis :cry2.

I cannot come up with a superlative claiming any other scene less sad than this one, but the end of "The Green Mile" certainly did push me over the edge of tears.

Agreed. I could not be an executioner by all means.
Two other movie scenes that never fail to turn my waterworks on are the scene in "The Fox and the Hound" when Widow Tweed drops Todd off in the game preserve, and the scene in the original animated "Charlotte's Web" when Charlotte dies :cry.
-
There were many scenes that are sad. But the scene from "The Fox and the Hound" where the Lady drops Todd in the forest and in the end made me almost cry. :cry2
-
I would say that the ending of T2 is pretty sad
-
Titantic was pretty said.. another was one was the funeral scene in my girl where Veda says goodbye to Thomas J. I teared up when I first saw it..
-
The ending of "Bolt"
-
I actually made it through Titaic without a tear but teared up in Lilo and Stitch when Lilo was about to be taken away.
Oh, and you can't make it through Marley and Me without tears, so just forget it! Most tears ever with the drug out "putting down" scene!
-
Saddest movie scenes?
-When Littlefoot's mother dies
-When Bambi's mother dies (or when he finds out from the Great Prince)
-When Mufasa dies
-When Dumbo is reunited with his mother, although she is incarcarated in that holding pen and there are scenes of the babies with their mothers/parents asleep.
-
If anyone's ever seen Cats Don't Dance, one of the best animated movies out there, one scene during and after one of the movie's songs, where Danny gets booted out of Hollywood and walks away in the rain, that one's pretty heartbreaking

I have always wanted to see that. But, unfortunately that movie is so hard to find around my area now. I have seen a few scenes when cartoon Network shows it. At least I think that was what the movie was. Doess CDD happen to have a evil little girl in it who tries to get the animals kicked out of Hollywood? From what I saw it was a good movie all though I didn't see the scene in question.
Saddest movie scenes I have ever seen
An American Tail (Can't name a scene just the whole darn movie was so depressing)
When Mufasa dies
When Bambi's mother dies
In Lady and the Tramp and you think Trusty is dead and Jock howls sadly
In Bambi II when you think Bambi is dead
In Oliver and Company when you think Oliver is dead.
In All Dogs go to Heaven when Charlie has to go back to Heaven.
In Bolt when Bolt and Penny are caught in that fire.
The Fox and the Hound when Widow Tweed has to drive Tod and leave him in that forest and the end.
Marley and Me when Marley dies
Where the Red Fern grown where those other dogs have to die.
Homeward Bound when you think Shadow didn't make it all the way back home.
-
Yes indeed, Cats Don't Dance has that evil Shirley Temple-esque girl who tries to get all the animals kicked out of Hollywood. That movie is really insanely hard to find, but if you ever get the chance to see the whole thing on cartoon network or something, go for it. Its amazing

I may just have to resort on buying it from Amazon.I'm sure I could find a copy on some website for a good amount.
-
Gee you guys just about covered all my favorite movies, almost. Of course the saddest of those are:
Littlefoot's mother's death,
Mufasa
Bambi's mother (tastefully off-camera but still packs a potent punch)
When Quasimodo gets heckled at the FoF
When we think Esmeralda is dead.
The Color Purple: Celie and Nettie are forced apart
GWTW: Melanie dies :cry
The Champ: The champ is dies after the fight (btw see the old Wallace Beery version, it's worth it!)
Imitation of Life: When Sarah Jane finally accepts who she is and comes home too late. Her mother has died.
Titanic: When Rose realizes Jack is dead
-
Oooh, Cats Don't Dance is fantastic. I think it might still be up on YouTube, but I don't know, they've really been cracking down lately.
Kenai's confession scene in Brother Bear was really sad, I thought.
-
Right, I just remembered, I saw Coraline a few weeks ago. The part where she's at home alone with her parents trapped and she started crying in the bed, that was pretty sad

Ohhhh, Yeah I forgot that one. "Koda your mom's not coming back" :cry2 :cry2 :(
-
Where the Red Fern grown where those other dogs have to die.
watched that right after getting our black lab because our friend at the video rental place told us that it had a happy ending. OMG :cry
-
Bridge to Terabithia: when Jess returns home to find out Leslie is dead
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire: Cedrics Death
10th Kingdom: Virginia's Mother dies
Land Before Time: Littlefoots Mothers death
Armageddon: when Harry(Dad) is telling Grace(Daughter) Goodbye
Pirates of the Caribbean At Worlds End: Everyone's death! I cried the most for Davy Jones though.
There are more, but im not going to list them unless it's okay.
-
I am Legend
The scene where Robert's dog becomes infected, and is forced to put it down.
I really liked that dog in that movie; I was seriously sad when it died.
-
mine are
-Lion king -when Mufasa dies
-Fox and the Hound- the ending
-Land Before Time- when Littlefoots mom dies
-Bambi- when Bambis mom dies
-Charlotte's Webs [not the cartoon] when Charlotte dies
-Brother Bear- the confession
-Harry Potter 4- Cerdrics death *imagines what the 6th one is going to be like with Dumbordores death*
and more that I can say at the moment [TOO MANY]
-
The scene featuring Order 66 in Revenge of the Sith really captured the emotion behind the action, and it kind of depressed me a bit for the rest of the film. The destruction of the Hometree in Avatar was pretty unnerving, too. Same goes for the Vulcan scenes in Star Trek.
-
(Spoiler, for those who have not seen the Princess and the Frog")
Ray's death. My mom was very surprised that he died. It had already been spoiled to me by TGWTG (Bum Reviews), but it was still incredibly sad to watch...especially after he seemed to be crunched...then didn't.
-
^^I agree on that Ptyra.
Seriously, they kill off the comedy relief of the film? What is wrong with Disney here? :(
-
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - Cedric's death
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - Dumbledore's death
Princess and the Frog - Ray's death
-
Jenny's death in Forrest Gump.
-
^^I agree on that Ptyra.

^ Yeeesss, so yesss :( . Poor, poor Jenny.
Ray was such a sweet character too. He wasn't just the comic relief, but he definately presents a much better boyfriend model than a certain "vampire"
-
The ending of District 9 was also pretty depressing. I'm really impressed with how riled up that film got me.
The death of Spock in Star Trek II also comes to mind as being wonderfully saddening. My favorite sad scene out of any film, however, has to go to the Empire Strikes Back's Carbon Freeze scene. They totally make it seem like they're killing of Han, and his "I know." to Leia's "I love you!" was just too poetic to ignore. Sure, the ending of Revenge of the Sith was sad and depressing, but it never achieved it's level of sentimentality quite like Empire did.
-
Does that "vampire" sparkle by any chance? XD
Another one to add for me is in Wall-E.....when Wall-E gets crushed by the plant thing in the middle of the room and EVE is trying to free him.....that's just sad, and later on when it seems like Wall-E has forgotten all about EVE.
-
Oh yes. That vampire sparkles.
That scene in Wall-E was incredibly sad too.
I gotta say that the scene in Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood where Pride absorbs Gluttony was pretty darn sad. Poor villain :( . Mostly when he called for Lust to save him, when of course, she was dead. In fact, all the scenes in FMA where Gluttony wants Lust are pretty darn sad for me...in both versions, in fact (especially the first).
Ah, and Hoinhiem learning Tricia (Elric's) last words. That poor, poor man :(
-
Oh yes. That vampire sparkles.
I knew it! Stupid spakling vampires....that is not a curse! It's just lame is all! XD
It is, in a way, sad on how Rachel dies in the Dark Knight, poor Harvey Dent, being torn up over her death you know. Never a good scene when something like that happens.

My List
1. The inevitable tragic scene of EVERY Disney film ever made. Whether it be you-know-when in Old Yeller, Baby Mine in Dumbo, Bambi's mother's, Mufasa (oh, God, Mufasa :( :cry ) in The Lion King, the village in Mulan, Aladdin's "Street Rat" dark reprise after that snobby prince mocks him at the beginning, Kala losing her baby in Tarzan, Todd's owner having to abandon him in Fox and the Hound, Grumpy breaking down into tears in Snow White, Penny in The Rescuers (just...just Penny), that horrible moment when you think Baloo has viciously killed by Shere Kahn in Jungle Book, and the end of Little Matchstick Girl (haven't seen it? Go out and find it. Just be prepared).
2. The resolve of any Secret Garden film ever made.
3. Citizen Kane
4. Colonel Shaw's death in Glory
5. Pick a scene with Jor-El from the Christopher Reeve Superman films. ANY scene.
6. Gandalf and Boromir's final scenes in Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring.
7. Any scene with Sean Astin's Samwise in Return of the King.
8. "Earn...this..." Tom Hanks's final words in Saving Private Ryan.
9. Speaking of Spielberg...Schindler's List. That is all.
10. In any The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe version, Aslan at the Stone Table.
11. As Malte has already said: The Green Mile. You know the scene.
12. Blade Runner. Don't know? Watch it.
13. The death of Hector in the otherwise lackluster Troy film. It doesn't help that Eric Bana made him the only likeable character in the whole film.
14. It's a Wonderful Life. I don't even know where to start with this one...
15. Short Circuit 2. Johnny Five dragged to the ground and brutally beaten within an inch of his life all the while begging his assaulters to stop.
16. Pick a scene from the latter parts of Forrest Gump. Just pick one.
17. Draco's death at the end of dragonheart. I have a strong fondness for dragons, so having a particularly likeable one like Draco die to tragically really did me in.
18. The end of any well-done Hamlet adaptation.
19. Heck the end of ANY well-done Shakespear tragedy, and some of his comedies.
20. Joyeau Noel, a retelling of the World War I Christmas cease fires. The soldiers trying not to kill each other after that really got to me.
21. "They look like big, strong hands, don't they?"
22. The closing scenes of ANY of the last three Harry Potter films.
23. The "Where They Are Now" segment of Apollo 13, where you find most of the crew died before ever getting back into space.
24. The Iron Giant. You know when.
25. The original and Peter Jackson versions of King Kong. You know.
26. Passion of the Christ. The whole dang thing. This is a film that renders even non-Christians to tears, so picture how *I* completely lost it while watching it.
27. Ever seen The Boy in Striped Pajamas? Make sure you catch the end.
28. The final bits of Marley and Me. As a dog owner, myself, well...
29. Finding out what happened to Hub's wife in Secondhand Lions.
30. The tragic bits of any well-done adaptation of any Charles Dickins book, ever.
31. The finale of Montoya's character arc in The Princess bride.
-
You know, the destruction of Vulcan wasn't the saddest part at all in the new Star Trek. I don't know what I was thinking. George Kirk's death was one of the most tragic things I've seen in a film in a while, and certainly one, if not THE most emotional scene out of anything Trek.
-
Some for me:
Mufasa's death in TLK.
An American Tail, pretty much as a whole.
The rack trap in Saw III.
The carousel trap in Saw VI.
-
Most of mine are Animals of Farthing Wood deaths if I don't count LBT, and there aren't any movies that have deaths I think are sad.
- Bold's death
- Scarface's death
- Badger's death
- Mr. Pheasant's death (second time I watched season 1)
- Sinuous's death
Not many other movies or tv series have had deaths that make me sad. Most of those I listed were main characters (except for Mr. Pheasant).
-
The Alamo (2004 version)- Just the whole movie. More specifically,
this part (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5XxmPAoca58).
Sound the Bugle (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3EdKJTaavo) from Spirit. You really have to have seen the movie to understand why this scene is depressing.
-

Sure, the ending of Revenge of the Sith was sad and depressing, but it never achieved it's level of sentimentality quite like Empire did.
Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker's death and funeral in Return Of The Jedi was also kind of sad.
Also, Warbeak's death in the "Mattimeo, A Tale Of Redwall" book and TV series, you knew it was coming but Warbeak herself was one of the most likeable characters ever and seeing her die was extremely sad.
Not to mention that scene in "The Secret Of NIMH" where Mrs. Brisby finds out about what happened to her husband.Sure it didn't seem that depressing but the thought of it was pretty sad.
-
Towards the ending, the movie Cast Away was really really sad. I love the movie but it's difficult to watch sometimes because of it.
-
The ending of The Shootist. It was John Wayne's last acting role and ironically, he played a gunslinger who was dying of cancer. Anyway, it ends with him surviving a gunfight against three other gunslingers only to get shot in the back by a bartender.
-
Again Disney, you print yourself as THE company that makes the saddest scene of the year. I can't even believe what you guys did in Tangled. Seriously Disney, what is wrong with you?
To everyone who's wondering, I won't spoil it. Even though the movie pretty much spoils it, you're STILL not ready when it does happen.
Seriously, Disney is just SO messed up.
-
I cried so hard in the movie Two Brothers. There wasn't really a sad scene it was just really depressing.
-
^
Is Two Brothers about the film with those tiger cubs?
Littlefoot's mother's death.
Mufasa's death in TLK, not only is it sad that the great king died but the fact that he was betrayed by his brother. Tragic.
Harry Potter: When Dumbeldore died, I can't recall feeling sad when Cedric died...
Bambi: When Bambi's mother got shot. One of the reasons why I dislike hunting.
The Dumbo scene when he reunites with his mother.
That's about it really...don't get too upset with films...
-
^
Is Two Brothers about the film with those tiger cubs?
Yep yep yep! :D I don't know why, I didn't cry at all the first time I saw it, but the second time it just really got toi me and I broke down and cried. And there were a lot of people watching when I watched it too, but i didn't care about how I looked, it was so sad.
-
The opening scene of the new Star Trek movie was pretty sad. I saw it for the first time the other day.
-
Later happenings on Vulcan from the same film also qualify.
-
Doby's death in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1. Poor, poor Doby :(
I honestly did feel sad when that happened. Same in the other movies with Cedric and Dumbledore.....
-
Later happenings on Vulcan from the same film also qualify.
Agreed. That was a bit of a shock.
-
Ok, pick a scene from Forrest Gump, especially if it is near the end of the movie. There were some earlier in the movie as well.
