Title: Your Arsenal
Post by: pokeplayer984 on March 20, 2009, 11:01:08 AM
These days it's just common sense to have an arsenal of some kind to battle against Viruses, Malware, Spyware and all that crap you can get from just about anywhere on the net. (Yes, it's actually that serious now.)

So go ahead and list your arsenal.

Here's mine:

Hijack This - Scans hidden files, very rarely used

Sophos Anti-Rootkit - Anti-Rootkit, used weekly

Malawarebytes' Anti-Malware - Kills viruses, worms, trojans, rootkits, dialers, spyware, and malware, used weekly

SuperAntiSpyware - Kills Spyware, Adware, Malware, Trojans, Dialers, Worms, KeyLoggers, HiJackers, Parasites, Rootkits, Rogue Security Products and many other types of threats, used weekly

Spybot Search & Destroy - Anti-Spyware, used weekly

AVG Anti-Virus - Anti-Virus, used monthly

Well, that's my arsenal, and I say that I'm well protected.

What's yours?

Well for protection all I really need is AVG and Spybot, but I've got tons of tools for attack including viruses and worms I've made myself.  I also intentionally download infected torrents searching for the worst viruses I can find so I can capture and release them on any cracker that tries to penetrate my system.  In addition to little things like that and my protection, I also have my expert abilities which allow me to manually remove just about anything from my computer.  I also have a portable version of Windows XP that runs from either a USB drive or a CD that doesn't even have to touch your hard drive to run.  Using that I can manually remove ANYTHING because the malicious program or cracker has no idea I'm even using my computer because the hard drive is never even used......until I remove the threat.

For the XP computer, this is what I use Panda Global Protection, Malwarebytes, Ad-Aware SE Professional, HijackThis, Web of Trust, Threatfire, Sophos Antirootkit, and Peer Guardian 2.

For the Vista computer, I use Panda Antivirus 2008, Malwarebytes, Ad-Aware Anniversary Edition (Free version), HijackThis, Web of Trust, Peer Guardian 2, and Threatfire.

Nice Arsenal!

I needed to look up Web of Trust, Peer Guardian 2 and Threatfire to completely understand what you have, and I'm impressed.

Looking at it all, I'd say you're well protected yourself.  Perhaps even better than I am. :)

I'm hoping to try GesWall sometime. GesWall is an intrusion prevention system (there's others out there like Defense Wall). What GesWall does is it treats anything connecting to the internet as an untrusted application. So let's say you download a malicious file from FireFox, like some kind of terrible trojan that modifies important system files. GesWall will immediately block it from doing anything, and even stop it from sending out confidential data.

I heard that intrusion prevention is the "way of the future" when it comes to antimalware. I wonder if antivirus programs like AVG, Panda, and Kaspersky will start to introduce intrusion prevention into their programming.

I don't really have much to tell the truth, I just use AVG and windows defender.

I rarely get any viruses, so I don't need all of that stuff. Right now I just use AVG, and I haven't run into problems yet. When I do get viruses, I use Spybot S&D and Malawarebytes,

I don't get infections that much, but that doesn't stop me from having all those programs. Better safe than sorry.

I have a relatively small arsenal.

McAfee Enterprise (used weekly)

SuperAntiSpyware (used weekly)

Spybot Search and Destroy (latest addition to my arsenal!) Will be used with SuperAntiSpyware

AdAware (obsolete)

Windows Defender

Norton Ghost in case things really hit the fan (used daily - backup utility)

Still trying to find an anti-rootkit munition.

Kaspersky Internet Suite.

I need nothing else because it blocks a ton of things.  All the freeware spyware things were coming up clean scan after scan so I simply uninstalled them.

I would be nervous to rely on just one antimalware program, no matter how good it was. For me, one antimalware program is never enough to keep a computer as secure as possible, regardless of its reputation.

I agree, there's always errors with any software, which is why I rely on 2 antispyware munitions.

(Yes, I am a hoplophile. And I couldn't resist calling these programs "munitions" because of the title.)

Good luck choosing. ;)

I have a new program added to my arsenal. KeyScrambler Premium. It's an anti-keylogger program that encrypts everything you type in certain areas (Microsoft Word, Firefox, Windows Logon, TurboTax, Thunderbird, AIM, MSN, Yahoo, Notepad, Steam, and World of Warcraft just to name a couple). By encrypting what you type, all a keylogger will be able to see are random keystrokes.

Nope, not from what I've experienced so far. I haven't noticed any significant slowdowns.

Just AVG for me.

MalewareBytes is a great app.  I'll never pay for it though.  The free version allows you to remove existing infections, which is quite useful for client computers.  To be honest, AVG blocks 99% of what I get.  I only get malware that I can't remove through AVG like once a year and I format my computers at least once a year so it's no big deal to me.  Nothing beats a format....especially when it comes to malware.

With me having Windows 7, I've had to change my arsenal due to some issues.

Here's mine so far.

AVG Free 9.0

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Spybot Search & Destroy

Panda Anti-Rootkit

I had to change my Anti-Rootkit from Sophos since, even with running it as Administrator and changing to XP Compatibility, it didn't work.  Panda looked like a good choice, so I went with it.

I also dropped SuperAntiSpyware due to the same problems I had with Sophos.

I'll see what else I can put in. :)

Superantispyware doesn't work for you anymore? That's odd. It works just fine for me. The only issues I have with it are updating the core program, which I need to uninstall the old version and install the latest version.

Just to update, I used Malwarebytes as well on my machine.  It found about four things on the first run I did a month ago...nothing ever since.  Must've been some old stuff on there.

I find that the best way to protect your computer is to know what the crap you're doing when you're online.  I have VERY safe browsing habits.  On top of that, I'm the only one who uses my computers.  My mother uses my computers sometimes, and they usually get some sort of infection from her dinking around.  Luckily, AVG usually kicks 'em in the butt.

But I load AVG onto client computers and it takes at least 6 months before they come crying back to me with a virus or other type of malware.  A woman today only lasted 4 months, but she's got a teenage son...and we all know what teenage boys look at online. ;)
